Today a CD, originally released as a 2LP of the Bill Evans Trio titled California Here I Come.
Bill Evans is one of the most important jazz piano players in modern jazz of the second half of the XXth century. For me he is the introvert piano player, always concentrated, imperturbable, bend over the keys, who seems to play his improvisations only for himself. I remember the great 1965 film fragments of a set recorded for Jazz 625, the well known English jazz program.
This CD contains 15 tunes that were performed by the Bill Evans Trio, featuring Bill Evans at the piano, Eddie Gomez on the bass and "Philly" Joe Jones at the drums.
This trio contains Philly Joe Jones, his colleague from the Miles Davis groups of the late 1950s. The rather restlessway of playing the drums, contrasts with the introvert sounds of Bill Evans and that makes this live concert very special. Great music, recorded at two performances, on the 17th and 18th of August 1967 at The Village Vanguard in New York City. Bill Evans liked this trio very much and it is a pity that it only performed during this period; it is the only recording date of this group, as far as I know.

Vandaag een CD, die origineel als dubbel-LP verschenen is, getiteld Bill Evans - California Here I Come.
Bill Evans is één van de belangrijkste pianisten in de moderne jazz uit de tweede helft van de Twintigste Eeuw. Voor mij is hij die introverte pianist, die in elkaar gedoken achter zijn toetsenbord zit, geconcentreerd, onverstoorbaar, schitterende muziek spelend alleen voor zichzelf. Ik herinner me hem van die onlangs weer opgedoken opnamen van het Engelse jazz jazzprogramma uit 1965 Jazz 625, waarvoor hij twee programma's van een half uur maakte.
Deze CD bevat 15 opnamen opgenomen door het Bill Evans Trio, met uiteraard Bill Evans op piano, Eddie Gomez achter de bas en "Philly" Joe Jones op het slagwerk.
Dit trio bestaat o.a. uit slagwerker Philly Joe Jones, zijn collega, die hij nog kende van de optredens en opnamen met Miles Davis eind jaren vijftig. Het is een schitterend combinatie geworden: die introverte klankengoochelaar samen met de tamelijk drukke levendige slagwerker. Prachtige muziek, opgenomen tijdens twee avonden waarin dit trio optrad in het Village Vanguard in New York op 17 en 18 augustus 1967. Bill Evans hield van deze bezetting en het is dan ook jammer dat het maar zo kort bij elkaar was; volgens mij zijn dit ook de enige opnamen uit die tijd samen met Philly.
Ik vind het leuk om nog een filmfragment te laten zien; helaas niet met dit trio met Philly Joe Jones. Het laat zien wat een groot pianist Bill Evans was ( 1929 - 1980 )

In 1997 The Complete Bill Evans on Verve set was released, 18 CDs all together, and this set contains, except some rare material, more then 45 tunes all recorded at the Village Vanguard during these two days; a great collection for if you want to hear more of it.
