Some weeks ago I found this Brecker Brothers album Don't Stop The Music, released on the Arista label ( Arista AL 4122 ). This LP was recorded in 1976 and is their third one since they were founded in 1974 as a jazz-rock group. This band became one of the most succesfull fusion bands of its time. They made ca. eight LPs up to the moment the band was disbanned in 1982. Later they made a restart.
I found a fragment where you hear the Brecker Brothers playing during a concert at the 1980 North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, The Netherlands, playing its tune Some Skunk Funk.
The Brecker Brothers contained both Randy and Michael Brecker, two talented brothers, who both developed themselves in skilled and sought after musicians. I was so lucky to see and hear both men in concert; Randy Brecker with his Electric Band July 2007 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam and Michael Brecker some years earlier July 2003 with the Charlie Haden American Dreams Quartet featuring Charlie Haden on bass, Brad Mehldau at the piano, Michael Brecker on the tenor saxophone and Jorge Rossy at the drums, North Sea Jazz Festival: The Hague.
Michael Brecker, a great tenor saxophone player passed away in January 2007 after an un-equal fight against leukaemia. I cherish the great concert with Charlie Haden. The album Don't Stop The Music, a suggestive quote it seems, as it looks on the cover if Randy says these words to Michael, 30 years before he passed away, contains not my most favorite music. Some tunes are too much R & B or disco-music, like Finger Licking Good and Don't Stop the Music, but other parts of the album feel pretty good: I'll keep it in my collection as an early example of Michael and Randy's music development.
The Brecker Brother's made a restart in the ealy 1990s and I found a fragment, made in Japan at the Gotanda Yuport Hall, March 1995, where the band plays some good music ....... and that fragment (you can find more parts of that concert on internet if you want) I love to share with you.

Alonzo Ross piano vocal and director - Robert Cookie Mason trumpet and vocal - Melvin Herbert trumpet - Eddie Coper trombone - Edmond Hall, Robert Cloud and Earl Evans reeds, Caspar Tower banjo and vocal, Richard Fullbright tuba and Frank Houston drums. Margaret Miller vocal on two sides: Skad-O-Lee - Don't You Wanna Know - Mary Bell - Monia - Florida Rhythm - Believe Me Dear - Lady Mine and Baby, Stop Teasin' Me. This Savannah recording session by this Florida territory band was recorded the 22nd of August 1927, today 81 years ago, for Victor and these recordings are he only ones recorded by this great band - now complete forgotten. A year ago I posted a contribuiton titled Ross De Luxe Syncopators.

Een paar weken geleden kwam ik deze LP tegen: Brecker Brothers: Don't Stop The Music, uitgebracht op het Arista label ( Arista AL 4122 ). Deze plaat is opgenomen in 1976 en is hun derde sinds hun oprichting in 1974 als jazz-rock groep. Deze band werd één van de meest succesvolle fusion bands van zijn tijd. Ze maakten in totaal acht LPs totdat ze in 1982 opgeheven werden en stopten met optredens. Later zou er nog een doorstart komen, maar daarover later.
Ik vond een fragment van een optreden van de Brecker Brothers van een concert op het Northsea Jazzfestival in Den Haag in juli 1980: Some Skunk Funk.
The Brecker Brothers bestaan uit de broers Randy en Michael Brecker, die zich beiden ontwikkelden tot ervaren en veel gevraagde musici. Ik heb ze allebei mogen horen spelen op het Northsea Jazzfestival: Randy Brecker speelde in juli 2007 met zijn Electric Band en Michael Brecker een paar jaar eerder in juli 2003 met het Charlie Haden American Dreams Quartet met Charlie Haden op bas, Brad Mehldau op piano, Michael Brecker op tenorsax en Jorge Rossy op slagwerk.
Michael Brecker, groot tenorsaxofonist, overleed anderhalf jaar geleden na een ongelijke strijd tegen leukemie. Ik ben dan ook blij hem nog in dat schitterende concert met Charlie Haden te hebben kunnen horen spelen. De plaat Don't Stop The Music, een wel heel suggestieve titel, omdat het op de hoes lijkt alsof Randy deze woorden tegen Michael zegt, dertig jaar voor zijn overlijden, behoort niet tot mijn favorieten. Sommmige nummers, zoals Finger Licking Good en Don't Stop the Music zijn me te populair, te disco-achtig en vervelen me snel, maar op andere nummers heb ik dat weer niet. Ik hou deze LP in mijn verzameling als een mooi voorbeeld van de fusionstijl in de muzikale ontwilkkeling van Michael en Randy.

Schitterende muziek en als je even op internet zoekt vind je ook de andere delen van dit concert.

Saw them fronting the Horace Silver Quintet at Ronnie Scott's in about 1969. Sadly, there's now only one brother left.
