Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Some months ago I bought myself in Copenhagen ( in Jazzklubben, a record shop at the Gothersgade) the Les Liaisons dangereuses soundtrack with Art Blakey´s Jazz Messengers avec Barney Wilen ( = with Barney Wilen).This film was released in 1960 and directed by Roger Vadim, starring Jeanne Moreau, Gerard Phillipe and Annette Vadim. Well - I'm not really interesting in the film ( a bit - I'll explain later .... ), but I'm anxious to learn more about the sound track. This album with the Bande Originale Integrale de Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers is, as Ilearned, not the complete sound track.

I learned that it was intented to ask Thelonious Monk to do the soundtrack while on tour in Paris, but, unfortunally that tour was cancelled so Marcel Romano, who ws responsable for the soundtrack had to go to New York with the scripts and a list with the exact timings for each scene. Thelonious Monk recorded with his quintet, featuring Charlie Rouse and Barney Wilen on tenor saxophones, Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums. They recorded part of the sound track at the Nola studios in New York around the 27th of July 1959. This session was used in the film, but it seems that it was never released on CD.

I found a short compilation of some shots and you can see a fragment of Miguel's Party with Blakey's music and others with Thelonious Monk's.

Art Blakey played with his Messengers the music from the so-called party-scenes at Miguel's used in the film on the 28th and 29th of July 1959. The musicians recorded tunes, like No Problem, Prelude in Blue, Valmontana, Miguel's Party, Weehawken Mad Pad and No Hay Problema which can be labeled as a latin version of No Problems.

In the film this group was called The Afro Cuban Boys. The musicians that made the music were Art Blakey on drums of course, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Barney Wilen on soprano and tenor saxophone ( he was also on the Monk sound track recordings), Duke Jordan and Bobbby Timmons at the piano, Jimmy Merritt bass, John Rodrigez on bongos and Tommy Lopez and William Rodriguez on congas. Barney Wilen, the liner notes read, had played at Newport with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Roy Haynes. Although I have searched on internet I haven't found scenes from this so-called Miguel's party in which this music was used. And that's a pity, because I love to see it ..... because, it is remarkable, that on the film set some other musicians were "playing": Kenny Dorham was on the film the trumpet player, but the sound was made by ..... Lee Morgan. Kenny Clarke plays the drummer man, while on the sound track Art Blakey makes "the noise for the talkies". Both Barney Wilen and Duke Jordan were on the film too, and that's why I love to see fragments of that scenes.

Een paar maanden geleden kocht ik bij Jazzklubben aan de Gothersgade in Kopenhagen in de CD Les Liaisons dangereuses soundtrack met Art Blakey´s Jazz Messengers avec Barney Wilen ( = met Barney Wilen). Deze film ging in premiere in 1960 en was geregiseerd door Roger Vadim, met als hoofdrolspelers Jeanne Moreau, Gerard Phillipe en Annette Vadim. Nu ben ik niet echt in de film geintereseerd ( of eigenlijk toch wel; daarover later ...) maar meer in de soundtrack. Deze plaat namelijk met the Bande Originale Integrale de Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers is, ontdekte ik, niet de hele soundtrack.

Het was de bedoeling dat Thelonious Monk de soundtrack zou opnemen tijdens zijn tour door Europa in Parijs, maar deze serie concerten ging niet door. Marcel Romano, die verantwoordelijk was voor de muziek bij de film, reisde toen naar New York, met een script vol nauwkeurige aanwijzingen en informatie over de lengte van de sets. Hij nam de muziek op met Thelonious Monk en zijn Quintet met daarin Charlie Rouse en Barney Wilen op tenorsax, Sam Jones op bas en Art Taylor op slagwerk. Ze namen een deel van de soundtrack voor de film op in de Nola studios in New York rond de 27ste juli 1959. Deze opnamen zijn gebruikt in de film, maar schijnen nooit heruitgebracht op CD.

Ik vond een korte compilatie met drie fragmenten uit de film, waarbij je een fragment van Miguel's Party ziet met Blakey's muziek en een ander fragment met de muziek van Thelonious Monk.

Art Blakey speelde met zijn Messengers, de muziek voor de zgn. party-scene bij Miguel's gebruikt in de film. De musici namen nummers op als No Problem, Prelude in Blue, Valmontana, Miguel's Party, Weehawken Mad Pad en No Hay Problema, dat je als een Latijns-Amerikaansee versie van No Problems kunt beschouwen.

In de film worden ze The Afro Cuban Boys genoemd. De musici die de muziek maakten waren Art Blakey op slagwerk uiteraard, Lee Morgan op trompet, Barney Wilen op sopraan- en tenorsax ( hij speelde ook mee op de Monk soundtrack), Duke Jordan en Bobbby Timons aan de piano, Jimmy Merritt bas, John Rodrigez on bongo en Tommy Lopez en William Rodriguez op conga's. Barney Wilen, volgens de bijgevoegde informatie, had op het Newportfestival gespeeld met Toshiko Akiyoshi en Roy Haynes. Hoewel ik zorgvuldig op het internet heb gezocht, kon ik geen bewegende beelden van deze zgn. Miguel's Party vinden, waarin deze muziek te horen is. En waarom wil ik dat zo graag ook zien? Omdat niet de bovengenoemde musici op de film "spelen", maar op trompet Kenny Dorham, die de muziek van ...... Lee Morgan playbacked en Kenny Clarke die "speelt" achter de drums van Art Blakey. Zowel Barney Wilen als Duke Jordan waren op de film te zien ....... en daarom wil ik graag dat fragment eens bekijken. Wie kan me helpen?

Kenny Dorham Remembered

A week ago I posted a call from Evette Dorham, daughter of the great bebop trumpet player Kenny Dorham. Several people responded to her appeal and shared their remembrances. Evette received also some reactions at her email address and talked by phone. A rather extensive reaction came from Fernando Gelbard, who shared his remembrances to Oscar Aleman in a previous blog, I love to share with you.

Fernando Gelbard writes: I Myself and a group of musicians who cherish harmony (we love Clare Fischer, The Hi Los, The Singers Unlimited etc.) also cherish Kenny Dorham solos. His harmonic concept was unique...The phrases and nuances un Kenny's playing were always loved and admired. I had the chance of hearing him in person in Buenos Aires sometime in the 60's (I think) when he went with a group of players including Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. I can't forget his solo in "The Falling Leaves". It was recorded by Milrud, the sound man, and later released as a pirate cd (I don't have it). Another legendary solo (in my opinion and my friends, all musicians) is that on "It could happen to you" with Jackie McLean, alto sax (not on that tune); Walter Bishop, piano; Leroy Vinnegar, bass; Art Taylor, drums. from the album "Inta Somethin'" . That solo contains phrases that I keep in my mind. In later years I played with Leroy Vinnegar in Los Angeles!! You know my music, Hans, you have listened to some of the music I produced and composed and I assure you that Kenny was always present. The Guido Basso Quartet album "Guido Basso" with Guido on fluegel, Frank Collett on piano, Andy Simpkins on bass and Terry Clarke on drums, although it wasn't said, was a tribute to Kenny. I would have recorded Kenny if he were alive.

Another thought, is that even when I lived in Argentina in the 60's and listened to Kenny, I thought many, many times how he and I, with our different backgrounds, felt the same emotions when we listened or played Round About Midnight, or any other ballad, those that touch your heart deeply. Evette Dorham asked me to post her sincere thanks to the jazz lovers around the world who continue to enjoy her dad's music. One of your readers, she says, Mr. Han S. has already contacted me to follow up & will try to get an article to me. I learned that all things have a season and I feel this is another season to encurage jazz lovers around the world to continue to listen to and enjoy my dad's music. Every person I meet who knew my dad well, tells me how he cared about how his fellow musicians fared. He enjoyed working with so many greats but I do remember a period when several frequented our home during a period of time. To visit, have a meal, work on music together (you know dad was a prolific arranger), discuss their upcoming plans & to be in support of each other. I remember well the Adderley Brothers who were so kind, Thelonious Monk, very soft spoken with a quick smile different from the public personea I read about, Max Roach who was like a brother to my dad and my godfather Milt Jackson, come to mind quickly.

Een week geleden plaatste ik een berichtje van Evette Dorham, dochter van de grote bebop trompettist Kenny Dorham. Verschillende lezers reageerden op haar oproep om herinneringen over haar vader met haar te delen; sommigen vertelden hoe ze nog steeds genoten van zijn platen; anderen stuurden uitgebreide reacties, zoals Fernando Gelbard, die eerder ook al zijn herinneringen aan Oscar Aleman aan ons vertelde. Zijn herinneringen aan Kenny Dorham vind je hieronder.

Fernando Gelbard schrijft: ( vertaald in het Nederlands) Ikzelf en een groep andere musici koesteren muziek gebasseerd op harmoniën; we zijn fan van Clare Fischer, The Hi Los, The Singers Unlimited etc.) en ook van de solo's van Kenny Dorham. De manier waarop hij de noten met elkaar in verband bracht was uniek. De muzieklijnen en akkoorden waren altijd doordacht. Je kent mijn muziek, Hans, je hebt ook geluisterd naar muziek die ik geproduceerd heb, ik verzeker je dat Kenny altijd aanwezig was. Als Kenny nog geleefd zou hebben had ik zeker uitgenodigd met hem een plaat op te nemen.

Nog een andere herinnering: Toen ik in de jaren zestig nog in Argentinië woonde en naar Kenny Dorham luisterde vroeg ik me vaak af hoe het mogelijk was dat zowel Kenny als ik, met onze verschillende achtergronden, blijkbaar dezelfde gevoelens hadden bij het luisteren en spelen van nummers als Round About Midnight, of welke andere ballad ook, die ons na aan het hart lag.

Evette Dorham vroeg me om haar dank over te brengen aan alle jazzliefhebers over de hele wereld die nog steeds genieten van haar vader's muziek. Ze heeft al reacties ontvangen en telefonisch contact gehad n.a.v. deze oproep. Ik ontdekte, schrijft ze (vertaald naar het Nederlands), dat er van alles blijkbaar een tijd is en ik voel dat er nu een nieuwe periode is aangebroken waarin ik iedereen wil aanmoedigen naar de muziek van mijn vader te luisteren. Iedereen die ik ontmoet of spreek en die mijn vader goed gekend hebben wijzen me op het feit dat hij steeds meeleefde met de andere leden van zijn band. Hij vond het fijn om te werken met de grootten en ik herinner me dat er een tijd was dat die vaak bij ons over de vloer kwamen; voor een bezoekje, om een hapje te eten, samen aan muziek te werken ( mijn vader arrangeerde ook vaak), elkaars plannen te bespreken en als het nodig was, om elkaar te steunen. Zo herinner ik met de Adderley Brothers (Nat en Cannonball) die heel aardig waren en Thelonious Monk, die heel zacht sprak en naar me kon glimlachen; heel anders dan zoals je over hem leest. Verder denk ik aan Max Roach, die als een broer voor mijn vader was en mijn peetvader Milt Jackson.

A few days ago Evette Dorham contacted me with a request for information. She has planned to make a book about her father, Kenny Dorham ( 1924 - 1972 ), who was a well known bebop trumpet player.
She says: I'm writing a book about my father and I'm gathering photos, audio, video or their memories they have of meeting my dad or seeing his performances of listening to his music. I know he traveled in Europe and I have met fans who have a picture they or a parent took of my dad somewhere in their travels or have an amature recording.

Kenny Dorham, born in Fairfield TX (USA) August 1924 started to play trumpet in some swing orchestras and in the mid 1940s he was part of the band of Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie - two musicians who played in the new developed bebop style of music. In 1948 and 1949 he played in the Charlie Parker Quintet. In the 1950s he was one of the founders of the Jazz Messengers and played in the Jazz Prophets. He replaced Clifford Brown, who died in a traffic accident, in the Max Roach Quintet. In the 1960s he played in bands with Joe Henderson.

Six weeks ago I posted a contribution about Kenny Dorham's Debut album . Evette wrote about that: Thank you for adding your thoughts on my dad Kenny Dorham, Hans. Evette continued: I know my dad had a strong affinity for Scandinavia and nearby, and this past July I made my on travel to visit and Rotterdam while attending the North Sea Jazz Festival. The late, great drummer Billy Higgens told me shortly before he passed on (May 2001) that I should retrace all my father's musicial footsteps so that is what I am doing. To learn more about my dad as a man, a musician and as a good citizen of the world who loved and found kindness wherever he traveled in the world.

Een paar dagen geleden kwam ik in contact met Evette Dorham die me om informatie vroeg. Ze is bezig om een boek te schrijven over haar vader, Kenny Dorham ( 1924 - 1972 ), die een bekend bebop trompettist was.
Ze schrijft: I'm writing a book about my father and I'm gathering photos, audio, video or their memories they have of meeting my dad or seeing his performances of listening to his music. Kenny Dorham Debut

Kenny Dorham is one of those gifted bebop trumpet players of the 1950s that should be in any jazz record collection. He was born in Fairfield TX August 1924 and passed away December 1972. He learned to play the trumpet while at high school. During the second half of the 1940s he played in the orchestras of Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Eckstine; the breeding ground for young talents. He replaced Dizzy Gillespie in the Charlie Parker Quintet for two years.

He was present at the famous Thelonious Monk recording sessions for Blue Note early 1950s and became one of te founders of the Jazz Messengers. He made his debut album on ............. Debut and some times ago I found it reissued on an Original Jazz Classics recording. The Kenny Dorham Quintet features himself on the trumpet, Jimmy Heath on tenor and baritone saxophones, Walter Bishop at the piano, Percy Heath bass and Kenny Clarke drums.

It is a pity that this great trumpet player never became one of the great trumpet players, like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Fats Navarro. Kenny Dorham had a beautiful dark tone and made him a sought after side-man at many recording sessions. Kenny Dorham is één van die talentvolle bebop trompettisten uit de jaren vijftig, die in geen enkele verzameling mag ontbreken. Hij werd geboren in Fairfield TX august 1924 en overleed december 1972. Hij leerde trompet spelen als student op de middelbare school. Eind jaren veertig vinden we hem terug in de grote orkesten van Dizzy Gillespie en Billy Eckstine; de kraamkamers voor jong talent. Hij verving zelfs een paar jaar Dizzy Gillespie in het Charlie Parker Quintet.

Hij was aanwezig bij enkele opnamen voor Blue Note van het Thelonious Monk Sextet begin jaren vijftig en was één van de oprichters van de Jazz Messengers. Hij maakte zijn debuut onder eigen naam op een ............. Debut album en een tijdje geleden heb ik die opnamen, heruitgebracht op Original Jazz Classics kunnen bemachtigen. Geweldig ! Het Kenny Dorham Quintet omvat, behalve hemzelf op trompet, Jimmy Heath op tenor- en baritonsax, Walter Bishop aan de piano, Percy Heath op bas en Kenny Clarke drums.
Het is jammer dat zo'n geweldig goede trompettist niet bij de het rijtje van allergrootsten in de jazz terecht gekomen is: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie en Fats Navarro. Daar had hij bij moeten staan. Zijn mooie donkere toon en uitstekende technische beheersing van zijn instrument maakte hem een gezocht begeleider en op veel CDs te horen. Overigens zingt hij ook niet onverdienstelijk op twee nummers op deze plaat: Chicago Blues en Lonesome Lover Blues. Ik ben dan ook blij met deze eerste plaat van hem onder eigen naam.
