Les Liaisons Dangereuses

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Some months ago I bought myself in Copenhagen ( in Jazzklubben, a record shop at the Gothersgade) the Les Liaisons dangereuses soundtrack with Art Blakey´s Jazz Messengers avec Barney Wilen ( = with Barney Wilen). This film was released in 1960 and directed by Roger Vadim, starring Jeanne Moreau, Gerard Phillipe and Annette Vadim. Well - I'm not really interesting in the film ( a bit - I'll explain later .... ), but I'm anxious to learn more about the sound track. This album with the Bande Originale Integrale de Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers is, as Ilearned, not the complete sound track.
Shot from the film with Kenny Clarke, drums and Kenny Dorham on trumpet.
I learned that it was intented to ask Thelonious Monk to do the soundtrack while on tour in Paris, but, unfortunally that tour was cancelled so Marcel Romano, who ws responsable for the soundtrack had to go to New York with the scripts and a list with the exact timings for each scene. Thelonious Monk recorded with his quintet, featuring Charlie Rouse and Barney Wilen on tenor saxophones, Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums. They recorded part of the sound track at the Nola studios in New York around the 27th of July 1959. This session was used in the film, but it seems that it was never released on CD.
Shot from the studio: Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, the producer and (prob) Duke Jordan or Bobby Timmons.
I found a short compilation of some shots and you can see a fragment of Miguel's Party with Blakey's music and others with Thelonious Monk's.

Art Blakey played with his Messengers the music from the so-called party-scenes at Miguel's used in the film on the 28th and 29th of July 1959. The musicians recorded tunes, like No Problem, Prelude in Blue, Valmontana, Miguel's Party, Weehawken Mad Pad and No Hay Problema which can be labeled as a latin version of No Problems.
Shot from the studio with in front Barney Wilen.
In the film this group was called The Afro Cuban Boys. The musicians that made the music were Art Blakey on drums of course, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Barney Wilen on soprano and tenor saxophone ( he was also on the Monk sound track recordings), Duke Jordan and Bobbby Timmons at the piano, Jimmy Merritt bass, John Rodrigez on bongos and Tommy Lopez and William Rodriguez on congas. Barney Wilen, the liner notes read, had played at Newport with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Roy Haynes. Although I have searched on internet I haven't found scenes from this so-called Miguel's party in which this music was used. And that's a pity, because I love to see it ..... because, it is remarkable, that on the film set some other musicians were "playing": Kenny Dorham was on the film the trumpet player, but the sound was made by ..... Lee Morgan. Kenny Clarke plays the drummer man, while on the sound track Art Blakey makes "the noise for the talkies". Both Barney Wilen and Duke Jordan were on the film too, and that's why I love to see fragments of that scenes.
Can someone help me?

Wie kan me helpen?

Barney Wilen

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
On the 13th an 14th of February 1958, 50 years ago, Barney Wilen, the famous French tenor saxophone player recorded with an all American rhythm section, a great album titled Barney Wilen - Jazz sur Seine.

Barney Wilen was a young talented French tenor saxophone player whose star rose from the mid 50s onwards in the Parisian jazz scene. He wa born in Nice (France) March 1937 and passed away in May 1996 in the same city. His father was an American and his mother French; he grew up in the US, as his parents moved to the States due to the war. They returned to France in 1947 and in the mid 1950s he astonished the French jazz scene with his performances on the tenor. He recorded with American musicians like Roy Haynes and John Lewis. He often played at the Club St. Germain in the Rue St. Benoit in Paris, a famous jazz club directed by artistic director of the club, Marcel Romano. I found a film fragment where Barney Wilen and Marcel Romano are interviewed by Sim Copains before Barney Wilen plays No Problems with a band featuring Clark Terry, Bud Powell, Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke. (1959)

In the St. Germain cellar he played with local artists, like René Urtreger , Martial Solal and Jean-Louis Valle, but also with Americans that were visiting Europe. Known is his recording session for the film L'Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud with Miles Davis. In February 1958 Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke were in Paris and made this album, Jazz sur Seine. The 12 tracks are, almost all, tunes composed or related to Django Reinhardt ( Swing '39, Nuages) and Charles Trenet.
Raymond Fol remembers in the liner notes of the original record how Barney played records as a preparation for the recording session: La veille, Barney vint chez moi pour 'ecouter ceux des vieux 78 tours de Django et de Trenet, que nous avions sélectionnés, etpendant qu'il relevait les mélodies exactes, je préparais pour Milt et Percy les harmonies et les basses qu'ils auraient à interpréter. ( = The day before, Barney came over to my house to listen to the old 78s of Django and Trenent, we'd chosen, and while he was picking up the exact melodies, I prepared the harmonies and bass parts for Milt and Percy to play.). The Barney Wilen Quartet featured Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, Milt Jackson at the ....... piano ( no, not the vibes !!), Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. It's a surprise to learn that Milt Jackson is playing the piano and not the vibes, his regular instrument. If you listen to the solos Milt plays, you can learn that he plays his solos as if he was standing behind his vibes, with two malets in his hands; he makes his solos with two fingers only. You can hear these solos on tunes like B.B.B. ( which actually means: Bag's Barney Blues ( Bag is the nickname of Milt Jackson), on Minor Swing and on Monk's Epistrophy.
The originally LP recording is now a collector's item, but thanks to Gitanes, this CD was reissued in the extensive Jazz in Paris series ( Gitanes 548 317 )
I found a film fragment of a performance of Barney Wilen at the Cannes Film Festival, the 10th of July 1958 in a performance titled Battle Of The Tenors. They play the tune Indiana and you can recognize Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Stan Getz, Guy Lafitte and Barney Wilen; all great tenor sax players.

Miles Davis in Amsterdam

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Fifty years ago, on the 4th and 5th of December 1957, Miles Davis recorded the sound track for the film Ascenseur pour L'échafaud. - some days later, on the 8th of December 1957, he played at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Miles Davis in Amsterdam (8th of December)( foto Ed van der Elsken)

In October 1957 Miles Davis had started a new quintet in New York featuring Cannonball Adderley (as John Coltrane couldn't join) and they made their debut in a tour labeled as the Jazz for Moderns. This group contained Miles Davis on trumpet, Julian Cannonball Adderley on alto saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers bass and Philly Joe Jones drums. The final concert was at Carnegie Hall, New York early October together with some more great names, including George Shearing, Gerry Mulligan and Chico Hamilton. Miles Davis performed with his group in four numbers. When the tour had finished Miles left for Europe.

As I told in a previous blog last week, one of the major events was the making of the soundtrack for the film Ascenseur pour L'échafaud. During this short trip to Europe, Miles also played some concerts, like a week in Club St. Germain, and two more in Paris at The Olympia Theatre and the Salle Gaveau, one concert in Brussels, in Amsterdam and Stuttgart. The concert scedulded in The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on the 8th of December, now 50 years ago, at 20.00 hrs. with his quintet, featured Miles Davis on trumpet, Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger at the piano, Pierre Michelot on bass and Kenny Clarke drums. This concert has been recorded, but never released on CD as far as I know. During the first set the quintet played: Woody'n You, Bags Groove, What's New, But Not For Me and Night in Tunesia. The second set opened with Four, then Walking, Well You Needn't, Round Midnight and Lady Bird. A great concert with Miles as the star, in my opinion. His accompanists, René Urtreger at the piano, a young Barney Wilen on tenor sax played very well, and although Miles was the "star", they accompanied Miles in a great way. There are some rumours, that Miles wasn't so happy with these men, as he had said to Barney Wilen, while on stage, between some solos: Man, why don't you stop playing these awful notes. It is a fact that Miles wasn't always understand by his critics in Europe, especially in Paris. I told about some troubles in a previous blog as Miles didn't announce the tunes, but just played one tune after the other, like he did at the Amsterdam concert. When Miles cuts short the applausse and moves efficiently from number to number, it's not from contempt of the public, André Hodeir wrote. He wants to keep the concentration both for the public and the musicians. Another incident happened at his first show at The Olympia Theatre, where Miles didn't appear in time at the theatre. His quintet had started without Miles. They played Walkin' and it sounded fine, but no Miles Davis. Barney took a tenor solo, and as he was finishing, backing away from the microphone, Miles appeared from the wings and arrived at the mike without breaking stride, just in time to start playing - an impressive entrance.

Yesterday I enjoyed this Amsterdam concert and it sounded great to me. Isn't it remarkable that it seems that jazz music has no best-before-date !!

Tijdens de eerste set speelde het kwintet Woody'n You, Bags Groove, What's New, But Not For Me en Night in Tunesia; tijdens de tweede set Four, Walking, Well You Needn't, Round Midnight en Lady Bird.

When Miles cuts short the applausse and moves efficiently from number to number, it's not from contempt of the public.
