The Jeff Hamilton Trio toured Europe four years ago and performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club (Terneuzen - The Netherlands), October 2008, featuring veteran jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton, piano player Tamir Hendelman and bass player Christoph Luty - a well remembered concert in this small famous jazz club. Recently this trio released an album entitled Red Sparkle, which brings back that sweet memory of this great concert.

This Jeff Hamilton Trio was founded ten years ago and in 2004 it released its first album, entitled The Best Things Happen ....., followed by albums like From Studio 4 - Cologne- Germany and Symbiosis.  Jeff Hamilton, born Richmond Ill, August 1953, started to play the piano as a kid, against his will, as he told Irene Lee for Jazz Times, but from the moment he heard Gene Krupa playing drums and Jo Jones on a Basie lp from his father, drumming fascinated him and when the Stan Kenton band visited Richmond, while on high school, featuring Buddy Rich on drums, he knew for sure: I want to be Buddy Rich .... He went to Indiana University for a few years, but started, before he finished it, to play in the Tommy Dorsey Ghost Band, also known as the New Tommy Dorsey band, founded after Dorsey passed away in November 1956.  John (Clayton) got me on Monty's gig, Hamilton tells:  We had met at Indiana University and had an instant connection. When Monty hired John he mentioned that he also needed a drummer, and did he have any suggestions.  Jeff played for two years with Monty Alexander Trio (1975-1977), which would become the trio most succesfull years .....

This trio became extremely popular due to its 1976 concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival. This successful trio played almost nightly for two years, before it was broken ....... Monty Alexander and his Trio revisited this famous trio in 2006 and visited Porgy en Bess November 2006 (with Monty Alexander at the piano - John Clayton double bass - Jeff Hamilton drums).  What a great concert! After he left the trio, Jeff joined the Woody Herman Big Band for one season and became a member of Laurindo Almeida - Bud Shank's LA Four ........ His first album under his own name was released January 1982 with Mark Murphy as the vocalist. Jeff accompanied Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney and was part of the Oscar Peterson Trio and worked with his friend John Clayton as part of the Clayton Brothers' Quartet and the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Jeff is a drummer who loves to play in big bands, but also an expert in smaller groups and he knows how to handle the brushes .........

Tamir Hendelman surprised a few years ago with his second album Destinations, which got several Grammy nominations. He is a sought after accompanists for vocalists like Roberta Gambarini and Barbara Streisand. Christopher Luty is a member for years at the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.

For me the opener, Ain't That a Peach strikes the right chords ........ Jeff, Tamir and Christoph create a steady swinging beat, which reminds me to the best Oscar Peterson tradition. It's a tribute to the legendary trumpet player Snooky Young who, in his 90s, recently passed away. Jeff played with Snooky, from the 1980s in several orchestra's like Snooky's own Sextet, with Bob Cooper, in the band of Gene Harris, but most of the times with the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. He labels, in the liner notes, Snooky as the backbone of the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchesta for 26 years.

The tune Red Sparkle refers to Jeff's first drum set. I was so knocked out with it. When you get the down times on the road, you remember the Red Sparkle drum set you got to play. This first set became the symbol for the highlights on stage .... the Red sparkle moments on the bandstand. Listen to this great Jeff Hamilton composition:

Jeff Hamilton is a great drummer - a master of the brushes. One of the tunes that impressed me most is the standard Too Marvelous For Words in which Jeff, Tamir and Christoph show what an excellent musicians they actually are. And what about the great Monk composition Bye Ya or A Sleepin' Bee, a tune that remembers me to a Sonet CD by the Art Farmer Septet with Red Mitchell on bass recorded in Stockholm 1974.

There's one minor point: Why doesn't the album lists the members of the trio? I had to search for the names of Tamir Hendelman and Christoph Luty, hidden in the liner notes. Isn't it strange that the liner notes don't give that information, nor the recording dates? Tamir told me that this info will be added in the next printing of the cd. Thank Tamir!

One of those pearls on the album is the Stephen Bishop hit On and On, with the byoyant beat from Ahmad Jamal's ineffably swinging Poinciana, a hat tip to the great New Orleans drummer Vernel Fournier, Jeff informs, in which all three musicians impress. Enjoy this tune: On and On:

THE KING OF BRUSHES: JEFF HAMILTON

Last week, Thursday the 16th of October 2008, the Jeff Hamilton Trio performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands. Jeff Hamilton performed at this exlusive concert with his trio featuring himself at the drums, Tamir Hendelman at the piano and Christoph Luty on bass. I wrote about that concert in a previous blog titled: Jeff Hamilton ( The Drumming Harold Arlen)

Some people sent me links to great film fragments, not recorded in Porgy en Bess, but during previous concerts and I love to share some fragments with you. During the Porgy en Bess concert I was fascinated by the relaxed way he played with his brushes. A brush is a fan of wire with a handle, used as an alternative for a drumstick. It gives a soft tone and if you use it in the right way it can make a smooth swinging drive, mostly used in slow, ballads. Zutty Singleton was one of the first drummers that used wire brushes to strike his drums. Jeff Hamilton is really great in using the brushes and I'd suggest to label him, only for this small contribution, as King of Brushes. In the next fragment he explains how to use the brushes .....

Jeff Hamilton is one of those sought after accompanists that play all around the world. He perfomes with his own trio and as the co-leader of the great Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. He is to be heard on numerous albums and, as I wrote, also on the first album by Tamir Hendelman under his own name titled Playground. In my blog I suggested that Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton were regular members of his trio, but Tamir contacted me from Wien, Austria, where he performed on Monday, that they were guest players only for this album. His regular trio contains Bob Bowman on bass and Tommy Ruskin on drums.

In a contribution I made after I visited an interview session at the North Sea Jazz Festival by Downbeat journalist Dan Quellette with Ron Carter I learned a new word: Bass de Jour - bass of the day. A drummer must have the same problems, flying by plane between continents. Well I can now let the cat out of the bag: Jeff Hamilton uses his own drum kit while on tour, but he has in fact three sets; one in Europe, one in Japan and one in the States. So, no drum-de-jour for Jeff.

CHUCHO VALDÉS and IRAKERE


I bought a CD titled Chucho Valdés & Irakere: Boleros - a cheap budget CD in the Cuba collection, released as Havana Nites HN001 that puzzles me. The track list is available, but no more additional information at all. I love to know the recording dates (1960s?) for the tunes listed below.

I heard Chuco Valdés in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( in the south west part of The Netherlands), November 1997, as part of Roy Hargrove's Crisol Band.

Het komende weekend hoef je je in Zeeland niet te vervelen ... als je van jazz houdt natuurlijk. Op zaterdag 25 oktober 2008 treedt in de Zeelandnet studio in Kamerland de boogie woogie pianist Little Willie Littlefield op. Ik vertelde al eerder meer over deze Little Willie Littlefield.

Op zondag 26 oktober treedt in het Filmthester FiZi in Zierikzee de dixielandformatie Scaldis Jazz Band op en als je van iets modernere klanken houdt kun je ook in Arneville in Middelburg terecht, waar Catfish optreedt. In Antwerpen treedt Rita Reys op - de Heintje Davids van de Nederlandse Jazz, die maar geen afsheid kan nemen en onverminderd door gaat met optredens. We hoorden dat al in mei van dit jaar in de Schouwburg in Middelburg. Het optreden van Rita Reys is in De Roma in Borgerhart.
En, het kan geen kwaad om nu alvast even de agenda te pakken, want het weekend daarna brengt Rein de Graaff twee giganten op de tenorsax mee naar Terneuzen, dat je niet mag missen: Pete Christlieb en Ferdinand Povel. ( 2 november 2008 - Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen).

RHAPSODY IN BLUE - PAUL WHITEMAN and his (CONCERT) ORCHESTRA
In juni 1924 nam Paul Whiteman het nummer Rhapsody in Blue op, gecomponeerd en gespeeld door George Gershwin aan de piano. Een beroemde Victoropname. Het eerste publieke optreden van de band met dit nummer vond vier maanden daarvoor plaats, in februari 1924 in de Aeolian Hall in New York, eveneens met George Gershwin aan het klavier. Ik heb over deze beroemde opnamen eerder een blog gemaakt getiteld: Rhapsody in Blue.
Gisteren, de 23ste oktober 2008, was het precies zeventig jaar geleden dat Paul Whiteman en zijn Concert Orkest dit beroemde nummer opnieuw opnam voor het Decca label.

In 1938 was hij toegetreden tot "de stal" van Decca artiesten en één van de eerste opnamen die hij maakte waren heropnamen van Gershwin composities; suites en concertos, die hem in het verleden beroemd hadden gemaakt. Een aantal van die suites waren: The Cuban Ouverture, An American in Paris, Concerto in F en, natuurlijk, Rhapsody in Blue. Ik heb een kopie van deze opnamen op een Decca 60 636, een heruitgave van deze opnamen uit 1938 op 78-toeren. Ik denk dat mijn plaat uitgebracht werd in de jaren veertig of vijftig. Het orkest van Paul Whiteman was een extra groot en uitgebreid "concert" orchestra, waarin tientallen musici een plaatsje vonden, zoals de gebroeders Teagarden ( Jack en Charlie) en de Gallodores ( Frank en Al; de laatste genoemde overleed een paar weken geleden). De pianist op de opnamen uit 1938 was Roy Bargy.

Op de foto van het label kun je ook goed het matrixnummer aflezen, dat in het schellak geperst is: W 64692 - dit nummer geeft aan dat deze opname afkomstig is van een moederplaat, die gemaakt is van de originele snijplaten, die gebruikt werden bij deze opnamen op 23 oktober 1938. Als je platenverzamelaar bent is het een prima manier om er achter te komen welke versie je hebt. Je hebt dan wel lijsten nodig, die deze informatie bevatten, zoals de American Dance Band Discography 1917 - 1942 samengesteld door Brian Rust. De A - het takenummer - kan aangeven dat er gebruik gemaakt is van de eerste daadwerkelijke opname ( als het take C is, kan het de derde opname behelzen), maar in dit geval lijkt het me logischer dat met de A bedoeld wordt, dat er gebruik gemaakt is van de eerste keus, de beste opname gemaakt tijdens die sessie. Leuk om deze ( niet zo beroemd als de 1924 Gerschwin opnamen) plaat te beluisteren.

JEFF HAMILTON: BORSTELKONING?

Afgelopen week, donderdag 16 oktober 2008, speelde in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen het Jeff Hamilton Trio. Jeff Hamilton trad op tijdens dit exclusieve concert voor de Benelux met zijn trio, waarbij hijzelf het slagwerk bespeelde, Tamir Hendelman aan de vleugel zat en Christoph Luty de bas bespeelde. Ik heb een uitgebreid verslag over dit optreden geplaatst in mijn bijdrage Jeff Hamilton ( De Harold Arlen on Drums)

Naar aanleiding van mijn recentie over het concert kreeg ik van verschillende mensen linken opgestuurd van filmfragmenten met daarop Jeff Hamilton aan het werk. Het zijn weliswaar geen opnamen gemaakt tijdens het concert in Porgy en Bess, maar het geeft een goed idee wat je bij Jeff Hamilton kunt verwachten. Het fragment hierboven komt van een concert met het Nicola Sabato Quartet met daarin als speciale gast Jeff Hamilton. Het nummer is opgenomen in Bel Luna Barcelona, Spanje in december 2006: Nicola Sabato bas - Dano Haider gitaar - Ignasi Terraza piano en Jeff Hamilton slagwerk.

Tijdens het concert in Porgy en Bess werd ik gefascineerd door de ontspannen en vakkundige manier waarop hij de brushes hanteert. Voor de jazzybeten onder ons: een brush is een uitwaaierend borsteltje van ijzerdraadjes, vastgehouden in een handvatje; een alternatief voor een drumstok. Je kunt er zachte tonen meemaken en het geeft, mits goed gebruikt, een zacht swingend stuwend ritme, dat zo goed past bij langzame ballads gespeeld in met opkringelende sigarettenrook gevulde jazzclubs. Zutty Singleton was één van de eersten die brushes gebruikte. Jeff Hamilton is in ieder geval een expert in het hanteren van de brushes ( zowel voor als achterkant) en de term "borstelkoning", die echter lijkt te verwijzen naar een standwerker ( wat niet de bedoeling is), is dan ook helemaal op hem van toepassing. In een volgend fragmenten demonstreert hij het waarom:

Jeff Hamilton is een veelgevraagd begeleider, die overal ter wereld optreedt. Dat doet hij met zijn eigen trio of met het geweldig swingende Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Hij is op heel wat platen te horen als begeleider, zoals op het eerste album dat pianist Tamir Hendelman onder eigen naam uitbracht, getiteld Playground. In mijn bijdrage over het concert leek het alsof Jeff Hamilton en John Clayton tot Tamir Hendelman's eigen trio behoorden, maar hij mailde me maandag vanuit Wenen (Oostenrijk), waar hij optrad, dat ze slechts als gasten meespeelden voor deze opnamen. Zijn reguliere trio bestaat uit Bob Bowman op bas en Tommy Ruskin op slagwerk; waarvan acte: Ik heb die blog ondertussen aangepast.

In een bijdrage, die ik maakte nadat ik een interview van Downbeat verslaggever Dan Quellette had bijgewoond tijdens het Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, schreef ik over het fenomeen bass de jour - de bas van de dag. Ook slagwerkers lopen tegen datzelfde probleem aan, vliegend van continent naar continent om op te treden. Ik kan nu verklappen hoe Jeff Hamilton dit oplost; hij speelt tijdens een concert gewoon op zijn eigen instrument - voor hem dus geen gelegenheidsdrumstelletjes ...... geen drum-de-jour. Hij heeft in feite drie sets: één in Europa, één in Japan en één thuis in de States.

RHAPSODY IN BLUE - PAUL WHITEMAN (CONCERT) ORCHESTRA: 1938

In June 1924 Paul Whiteman recorded his famous version of Rhapsody in Blue, as composed and played by George Gershwin at the piano. A famous Victor recording. The first public performance was 4 month earlier at the New York Aeolian Hall, with George Gershwin on the keys too. This famous recording was discussed in a previous contribution titled Rhapsody in Blue. Today the 23rd of October 1938, 70 years ago, Paul Whiteman and his Concert Orchestra re-recorded this famous tune for Decca.

Paul Whiteman recorded his 1920s version of Rhapsody in Blue for Victor; in 1938 he had became one of the Decca label-artists. He re-recorded in October 1938 several Gershwin compositons, suites and large concertos, that had made him famous, like the Cuban Ouverture, An American in Paris, Concerto in F and Rhapsody in Blue. I have a copy of the Decca 60 636, a reissue of this 1938 recording. I think that my copy was released in the 1940s or 1950s. Paul Whiteman and his (Concert) Orchestra was a large band with great names like Jack and Charlie Teagarden and Al and his brother Frank Gallodoro ( Al passed away some weeks ago). The piano part on this version was played by Roy Bargy.
When you have a look at the label image you can clearly see the impressed matrix number W 64692 - the number that indicates that the music on this record was pressed with a stamper recorded on the 23rd of October, 1938.

If you are a record collector, you can find this information in books or lists on internet. I found my info in the famous The American Dance Band Discography 1917 - 1942 by Brian Rust.The A means that the first take ( the first actual recording) was used, which sometimes indicates that it really was the first ( or third if the take reads C) recording, but sometimes, like in this case, it means that the best version of the recording session was used.
Nice to have this (although not his famous) Rhapsody in Blue 1938 version.

On Thursday the 16th of October 2008 the Jeff Hamilton Trio performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in the southwest part of The Netherlands, before an enthusiastic audience. The trio featured Jeff Hamilton on drums, Tamir Hendelman at the piano and Christoph Luty on bass.

Jeff Hamilton, who interrupted his European tour, which started in Scotland and Germany and continued it in Germany yesterday, to be followed by concerts and clinics in Switserland and Austria later, for an exclusive concert in The Netherlands and Belgium in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club. Jeff enjoyed being in Terneuzen again: I love to be back in Porgy. When I'm here I think it's Sunday; you must have that same feeling. Next time I'll be back on Sunday - I promise! Two years ago, November 2006, Jeff Hamilton was part of the Monty Alexander Trio in a concert in this club; a remake of the famous Montreux Trio, which brought Monty and his men a lot of fame. This time Jeff Hamilton visited Terneuzen with his trio. Piano player Tamir Hendelman, Israelian born, is a member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio since 2000 and is, except a sought after accompanist, also a skilled arranger. He proved that with a great arrangement of the tune Lullaby of the Leaves, played by the three men in the first set. His first album, Playground, was released just recently in Japan, with guest players Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton and if you know that he is also the regular piano player in the great Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra then you'll understand that both men are a good team. Christoph Luty learned to play the bass from John Clayton and his bass playing sounded, now and then ( in my opinion), like Ray Brown. We learned that he also could play his instrument in a great way with the bow in a Claus Ogerman composition titled Symbiosis, a Jazz Concierto. Jeff Hamilton showed us, that nothing is left of the ingrained prejudice that a drum set always sounds very loud. With the brushes ( or sometimes even with his bare hands in a nameless tune, titled in Ternoezen as Arlen Goes To Brasil) and a fabulous technique, he can create a clear and transparent rhythmical base.

His fascination for Harold Arlen during this concerts finds its origin in an event during the 2005 North Sea Jazz Festival, Jeff explains: When I was at the North Sea Jazz Festival (July 2005) I had to play at the Jean 'Toots' Thielemans & Friends sing the Harold Arlen Songbook concert. When I wanted to join the band, two 20 years old students stopped me. "I love to enter the stage", I told the girls; "I have to play." Oh, you are Toots Thiel(e)mans? No, I wish I was ...... Well, then you must be Harold Arlen ...................... ( for the youngsters among us: Harold Arlen was a famous composer who made hunderds of jazz tunes - he passed away in 1986).

Although all the hints by Jeff Hamilton according this honorary title of course Harold Arlen returned with his composition Blues In The Night, among tunes like So Many Stars by Sergio Mendes, Poinciana, an Ahmad Jamal composition and, special for the drummer men in the audience, the Rodgers composition I Didn't Know What Time It Was, a killer-diller for drums, beause the changing measures, renamed in Porgy en Bess as I Didn't Know What Time It Is.

A great concert, which learns that the volunteers in Porgy en Bess are doing a very good job inviting this kind of musicians.

FATS WALLER: MILK FOR SIX.

In the middle of October 1938 Fats Waller had just returned from a tour along Europe and, I guess, his visit to England still was still a fresh experience for him. On the 14th of October and some days later, 70 years ago, he made some radio programs in the Yacht Club in New York city, that were recorded for a later transmission. Hugues Panassié, the famous French jazz journalist and producer, who came to the States to produce some recordings with Mezz Mezzrow, Tommy Ladnier and Sydney Bechet, remembered how he met Fats during these sessions. Then Fats came towards me, moving his eyebrows up and down in a funy way and spoke several words to me in what he took to be French. Then a piano was rolled out onto the floor and Fats played a number on his own, as a special turn. His enormous head had a tiny bowler hat on top of it, and the movements of his eyebrows moved it around in a comical way. He announced, "I'm gonna play Tea For Two", in other words, "Milk For Six"

HOWARD ALDEN 50 JAAR
Vrijdag vierde de Amerikaanse gitarist Howard Alden zijn vijftigste verjaardag. Geboren in Newport Beach, Californië (USA) op 17 oktober 1958 begon hij op banjo, maar pakte de gitaar professioneel ter hand in het orkest van Disneyland. In 1978 speelde hij bij de Red Norvo band en het orkest van Dick Sudhalter, die onlangs overleed. Ik heb daar in een eerdere blog aandacht aan besteed ( even naar beneden scrollen). In de tachtiger jaren zien we hem terug in allerlei swingbands, maar zelf geniet ik het meest van zijn soloplaten en duetopnamen met musici als Dick Hyman, Bucky Pizzareli, of de legendarische gitarist George Van Eps (in het Engels). Ik vond een fragment van een concert waarin we de twee heren in actie kunnen zien, met Bob Haggart op bas en Butch Miles op slagwerk. ( Schorndorf, Duitsland - oktober 1983).

Sinds de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw speelt hij in allerlei swing revival groepen en, ondanks het feit dat hij een aantal jaren amper opgetreden heeft, lijkt hij nu weer volop actief. Vorige week speelde hij nog in Valkenswaard en gisteren was hij in Bonn (Duitsland). Vanaf zondag vind je hem op een jazzcruise op de Zwarte Zee, die zondag met het MS Delphin Voyager vanuit Istanboel - Turkije georganiseerd wordt. Tenslotte wil ik nog een fragment laten horen waarin Howard Alden speelt samen met klarinettist Ken Peplowski ( 1995). Genieten van de klassieker: Panama.

FATS WALLER: MILK FOR SIX

Halverwege oktober 1938 was Fats Waller net terug uit Europa en nog onder de indruk, denk ik, van zijn bezoek aan Engeland. Op 14 oktober en de dagen er na, zeventig jaar geleden, maakte hij in de Yacht Club in New York "ingeblikte" radioprogramma's voor o.a. Martin Block. Then a piano was rolled out onto the floor and Fats played a number on his own, as a special turn ( = Er werd een piano binnengerold en Fats speelde een solonummer om mee te beginnen. ( = Hij droeg een belachelijk klein bolhoedje op zijn enorme hoofd, dat op en neer bewoog als hij met zijn wenkbrauwen bewoog.) Op donderdag 16 oktober 2008 speelde in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen in een redelijk gevulde zaal het Jeff Hamilton Trio. Dit trio bestaat uit Jeff Hamilton op slagwerk, Tamir Hendelman aan de piano en Christoph Luty op bas.

Jeff Hamilton, die zijn korte tournee door Schotland, Duitsland, Zwitserland en Oostenrijk onderbrak voor een exclusief optreden in Porgy en Bess, had er zichtbaar zin in. I love to be back in Porgy. (= Ik vind het fijn terug te zijn in Porgy). When I'm here I think it's Sunday; you must have that same feeling. ( = Als ik hier ben denk ik dat het zondag is; datzelfde gevoel moeten jullie ook hebben). Next time I'll be back on Sunday - I promise! (= Volgende keer kom ik terug op een zondag - dat beloof ik).

Twee jaar geleden, november 2006, speelde Jeff Hamilton in Porgy en Bess als onderdeel van het Monty Alexander Trio; een remake van het fameuze Montreux Trio, waarmee Monty in 1976 de wereld overtuigde ..... Nu had Jeff Hamilton zijn trio meegebracht. Pianist Tamir Hendelman, geboren in Israël, speelt sinds 2000 bij het Jeff Hamilton Trio en is, behalve een veelgevraagd pianist, ook een kundig arrangeur. Wat te denken van het schitterrende arrangement van Lullaby of the Leaves, dat het trio vertolkte. Hij maakte onlangs zijn eerste eigen CD Playground in Japan, samen met gastspelers John Clayton en Jeff Hamilton en als je weet dat Tamir Hendelman ook pianist en arrangeur is in het schitterende Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra dan begrijp je dat deze mannen goed op elkaar ingespeeld zijn.

Christoph Luty heeft de loopjes op zijn bas geleerd van John Clayton en zijn spel deed me, zo nu en dan, denken aan Ray Brown. Hij liet horen dat hij ook voortreffelijk uit de voeten kan op de gestreken bas, zoals in het stuk Symbiosis, een Jazz Concierto dat gecomponeerd werd door Claus Ogerman.
Jeff Hamilton laat door zijn spel geen spaan heel van het vooroordeel dat drummen per definitie hard moet zijn. Met zijn brushes ( of gewoon met zijn handen in het nog naamloze stuk, dat in Ternoezen de werktitel Arlen Goes To Brasil mee kreeg) en zijn fabelachtige techniek, weet hij een helder en transparant ritmische basis neer te leggen. Zijn fascinatie voor Harold Arlen tijdens dit concert vindt zijn oorsprong in het Northsea Jazz Festival van een paar jaar geleden, legt hij uit: When I was at the North Sea Jazz Festival (July 2005) I had to play at the Jean 'Toots' Thielemans & Friends sing the Harold Arlen Songbook concert. "I love to enter the stage", I told the girls; "I have to play." ( = Ik zou graag op het podium, want ik moet daar spelen). Oh, you are Toots Thiel(e)mans? ( = O dan bent U natuurlijk Toots Thiel(e)mans). No, I wish I was ..... ( = Nee, als dat zou kunnen ......... ). Well, then you must be Harold Arlen .... ( = O, dan moet u Harold Arlen zijn). ..................... ( = ......... ( voor de jongelui onder ons: Harold Arlen was een beroemd componist, die overleed in 1986)). Behalve allerlei toespelingen op deze "eretitel"" speelde het Jeff Hamilton natuurlijk ook muziek van Harold Arlen ( veel jazz standards zijn nu eenmaal van zijn hand), zoals Blues In The Night en composities als So Many Stars van Sergio Mendes, Poinciana van Ahmad Jamal en, speciaal voor de drummers in de zaal, I Didn't Know What Time It Was, een nummer van Rodgers, waarin snelle maatwisselingen zitten - een killerdiller voor elke drummer en daarom in Terneuzen omgedoopt tot I Don't Know What Time It Is. (= Ik weet niet in welke maat het staat)

Een schitterend optreden, waarin Porgy en Bess weer eens bewezen heeft schitterende concerten te organiseren.

HOWARD ALDEN's 50th BIRTHDAY
Howard Alden, guitar player, was born on the 17th of October 1958, 50 years ago, in Newport Beach, California (USA). He started on the banjo, but changed to guitar and started professionally on his eigtheenth in Disneyland. In 1978 he played in the Red Norvo band and joined the Dick Sudhalter band. Dick Sudhalter passed away some weeks ago: I reported that in a previous blog. During the 1980s he is active in a lot of swing bands, but I really like his solos at the guitar or in duet with musicians like Dick Hyman, Bucky Pizzareli the legendary George Van Eps. I found a small fragment from a concert in which Howard Alden plays with George Van Eps, featuring Bob Haggart on bass and Butch Miles on drums ( Schorndorf, Germany - October 1983).

Since the 1990s he plays in swing revival groups and, although his guitar playing has been simmering for some years, he's now active again. Last week he was playing in Valkenswaard in The Netherlands and tomorrow he will perform in Bonn, Germany. Next week he will be part of the musicians at a Black Sea Jazz cruise on the MS Delphin Voyager leaving from Istanbul, Turkey, next sunday. I love to finish with a great duo featuring Howard Alden with clarinet player Ken Peplowski ( 1995). Enjoy the traditional: Panama.
