On Saturday the 4th of October reed player Alfred Gallodoro, better known as Al Gallodoro, passed away, 95 years old. He was active in music until his last days - he performed at the Corning Jazz and Harvest Festival in New York City, three weeks ago on the 20th of September 2008 and was scedulde to perform at the Justin's 301 Lark St, Albany, New York for next weekend, on the 18th of this month.

Al Gallodoro was born as Alfred J. Gallodoro in Chicago on the 20th of June 1913 and learned to play the saxophone and clarinet at a young age. When he was thirteen he was already playing in the Romeo and His Juliets band. When he was fifteen his family moved to New Orleans where he got a job at local vaudeville clubs playing the clarinet. In the 1930s he left for New York where he worked at the east coast with musicians like Rudy Vallee.

He became a member of the Isham Jones Band and became the leader, the first sax player of the saxophone section, the Sax Soctette, of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. In this section he became a virtuoso on his instrument and enlarged the Saxophone Soctette up to seven and later even nine players. When Paul Whiteman disbanded his band in the early 1940s Al Gallodoro became a member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra and played classical music. When Paul Whiteman became the musical director for ABC radio in 1943 he asked Al to join him and it is said that no other musician played so much live solos on the air then Al did. For me Al Gallodoro became more then a name, as he was invited to play some concerts with the Dutch Beau Hunks.

Ten years ago he came to Holland invited by Leo van Oosterom, leader of the Beau Hunks to play concerts in Voorburg ( Theater De Tobbe) and with various bands in Delft ( Verdrop), De Nieuwe Veste in Breda ( with the Original Victoria Band) and in De Komedie in Maastricht with a jam band featuring Menno Daams and Robert Veen. Thanks to Robert Veen I received a year ago a beautiful poster of this tour, published in this blog. Two years later, in 1997, Al made a record with The Beau Hunks and he performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague and the Oude Stijl Jazz Festival (= Traditional Jazz Festival) in Breda, the former Jazz Capital in the southern part of The Netherlands.

The record, titled Out of Nowhere by Al Gallodoro with The Beau Hunks, released on Basta (30-9092) belongs to one of my favorites. I remember the TV-program Reiziger in Muziek, produced by Han Reiziger, on Dutch VPRO television of the 26th of October 1997 in which Al Gallodoro played with the Beau Hunks. I love to finish with a small documentary around the recording of one of his last CDs in 2003 made by the Sarasota Saxes. Enjoy it

DOCTOR JAZZ DAG:

Op zaterdag 11 oktober 2008 vindt in Wageningen de Doctor Jazz Dag plaats. Deze dag, die bestaat uit een grote platenbeurs in de ochtend en optredens in de middag zal voor de meesten bekend zijn onder de naam van Doctor Jazz Reunie. Deze bijeenkomst wordt zaterdag voor de 88ste keer gehouden in het WICC gebouw in Wageningen.

De dag begint altijd met een grote beurs, waarbij veel jazzverzamelaars hun 78-toerenplaten, LP's, CD's en boeken verzameling proberen uit te breiden met net die ene zeldzame uitvoering, die al jaren een gat vormt in hun verzameling. Bovendien is en blijft het natuurlijk, ondanks de naam, een gewone reunie, waar honderden verzamelaars uit West Europa ( behalve veel Nederlanders, uiteraard ook veel verzamelaars uit Belgen, Duitsland en de landen daarom heen.) Oude gezichten, maar ook altijd weer nieuw bloed.

's Middags begeven de meesten zich naar de café-zaal, waar livemuziek gebracht wordt - een Gezellige Muziekmiddag heet dat in het programma of Plezierige luistermiddag met deze keer optreden van de Crooks, de band rond zanger gitarist Frenk van Meeteren, die we kennen van de stringband The Gangbusters en bij velen nog steeds bekend is als presentator van het VPRO programma The Groove Juice Special. Waarom worden er niet meer zulke programma's uitgezonden? Verder treden op de Satchmo Band, die uiteraard een eerbetoon brengen aan de muziek van Louis Armstrong, de Blue Rhythm Jugglers
van Jack van Elewout uit Breda , de Root Digger Jazzband uit Zevenbergen, die dit jaar haar 25jarig bestaan viert en, de uitsmijter, de Eindhovense Never Mind Jazz Band o.l.v. Henk Velema. Je kunt alle informatie teruglezen op de onlangs vernieuwde website van het Doctor Jazz Magazine.

Opgenomen tijdens een live-optreden in het BIM huis in Amsterdam op 10 oktober 1998, tien jaar geleden, als onderdeel van hun Raymond Scott project. Een toevallige gebeurtenis, lijkt het, in het licht van het overlijden van Al Gallodoro eerder deze week, die een actieve rol speelde in een project, dat eveneens rond die tijd speelde en resulteerde in een aantal concerten en een prachtige CD Out of Nowhere, waar ik morgen meer over wil vertellen.
