On the 13th an 14th of February 1958, 50 years ago, Barney Wilen, the famous French tenor saxophone player recorded with an all American rhythm section, a great album titled Barney Wilen - Jazz sur Seine.
Barney Wilen was a young talented French tenor saxophone player whose star rose from the mid 50s onwards in the Parisian jazz scene. He wa born in Nice (France) March 1937 and passed away in May 1996 in the same city. His father was an American and his mother French; he grew up in the US, as his parents moved to the States due to the war. They returned to France in 1947 and in the mid 1950s he astonished the French jazz scene with his performances on the tenor. He recorded with American musicians like Roy Haynes and John Lewis. He often played at the Club St. Germain in the Rue St. Benoit in Paris, a famous jazz club directed by artistic director of the club, Marcel Romano. I found a film fragment where Barney Wilen and Marcel Romano are interviewed by Sim Copains before Barney Wilen plays No Problems with a band featuring Clark Terry, Bud Powell, Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke. In the St. Germain cellar he played with local artists, like René Urtreger , Martial Solal and Jean-Louis Valle, but also with Americans that were visiting Europe. Known is his recording session for the film L'Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud with Miles Davis. In February 1958 Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke were in Paris and made this album, Jazz sur Seine. The 12 tracks are, almost all, tunes composed or related to Django Reinhardt ( Swing '39, Nuages) and Charles Trenet.
Raymond Fol remembers in the liner notes of the original record how Barney played records as a preparation for the recording session: La veille, Barney vint chez moi pour 'ecouter ceux des vieux 78 tours de Django et de Trenet, que nous avions sélectionnés, etpendant qu'il relevait les mélodies exactes, je préparais pour Milt et Percy les harmonies et les basses qu'ils auraient à interpréter. ( = The day before, Barney came over to my house to listen to the old 78s of Django and Trenent, we'd chosen, and while he was picking up the exact melodies, I prepared the harmonies and bass parts for Milt and Percy to play.). The Barney Wilen Quartet featured Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, Milt Jackson at the ....... piano ( no, not the vibes !!), Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. It's a surprise to learn that Milt Jackson is playing the piano and not the vibes, his regular instrument. If you listen to the solos Milt plays, you can learn that he plays his solos as if he was standing behind his vibes, with two malets in his hands; he makes his solos with two fingers only. You can hear these solos on tunes like B.B.B. ( which actually means: Bag's Barney Blues ( Bag is the nickname of Milt Jackson), on Minor Swing and on Monk's Epistrophy.
The originally LP recording is now a collector's item, but thanks to Gitanes, this CD was reissued in the extensive Jazz in Paris series ( Gitanes 548 317 )
I found a film fragment of a performance of Barney Wilen at the Cannes Film Festival, the 10th of July 1958 in a performance titled Battle Of The Tenors. They play the tune Indiana and you can recognize Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Stan Getz, Guy Lafitte and Barney Wilen; all great tenor sax players.

Het Barney Wilen Quartet bestond uit Barney Wilen op tenorsax, Milt Jackson achter de ....... piano ( nee niet achter de vibrafoon), Percy Heath op bas en Kenny Clarke op slagwerk. Verrassend om te ontdekken dat Milt Jackson piano speelt en geen vibrafoon, zijn normale instrument. Als je naar de solo's luistert hoor je hoe hij piano speelt alsof hij de malets, de stokken voor de vibrafoon, in zijn handen heeft: gewoon dus met twee vingers ( maar wel razend knap). Luister maar eens naar B.B.B. ( staat voor Bag's Barney Blues ( Bag is de bijnaam voor Milt Jackson), naar Minor Swing en op Monk's compositie Epistrophy.
