If you believe it must be a hell of a job to find subjects for this daily weblog, you are wrong..... the problem is often .. what to take. And if you don't have inspiration there is always the inexhaustible archive of jazz records, made since 1917, when the Original dixieland Jass (!!) Band recorded the first record, to be labeled as "jazz".
Today, fifty years ago, on the 4th of March 1958, a Tuesday, five men of the Miles Davis Sextet enter the Columbia studio's at 30th Street in New york City. Time 7.00 p.m. The musicians are Miles Davis trumpet, Cannonball Adderley alto saxophone player, John Coltrane tenor saxophone, Paul Chambers bass and Philly Joe Jones drums. Red Garland didn't arrive.
After tuning their instruments and some tunes to check the sound they are ready to start recording the first tune, the number Sid's Ahead. Sid refering to the New York disc jockey Symphony Sid ( = Sid Torin). When they start playing the tune, Red Garland still didn't arrive, so one of the first tunes to record, is recorded without the sixt man: Red Garland. That's the reason why Miles Davis is playing some chords on the piano behind Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane's solo's. When Miles takes over the solo only the excellent steady bass of Paul Chambers is to be heard and the drums and cymbals of Philly Joe Jones. The second tune to perform is Little Melonae, named after the daughter of composer Jackie McLean. This tune is played without Cannonball Adderley and Red Garland, who still didn't arrive. This tune was previous recorded by Miles Davis and John Coltrane in one of their first recordings of this tune on the 27th of October 1955 with the same rhythm section as on this 4th of March 1958 recording session. That's probably the reason Canonball Adderley doesn't play on this tune. Before they recorded the last tune, Dr. Jackle, Red Garland arrives and this is the only tune for today they play with the complete sextet. This tune, also composed by Jackie McLean, who gave it that titled. On the originally issue of these recordings the tune is misidentified as Dr. Jekyll.
Two tunes were originally released on the Columbia release Milestones by Miles Davis; Sid's Ahead and Dr. Jackle, as Little Melonae stayed unissued, until is was reissued on the Mosaic box The Complete Recordings of Miles Davis with John Coltrane.
The version of this tune used for the Japanese reissue 1958-Miles is in fact the October 1955 version ( mind the pianopart !!). The rest of the Milestones tracks were recorded a month earlier, on the 4th of February 1958. The recording session on the 4th of March 1958 lasted until 10.00 p.m.
In some previous blogs I discussed more Miles Davis session, preceded this one, like his European tour in December 1957 with the concert in Amsterdam and the Ascenseur pour L'échafaud recordings. In the magazine Jazz Bulletin by the Dutch Jazz Archive ( January 2008) Jan J. Mulder refers in his article Lift naar het schavot to this period too.

Misschien denk je dat het verschrikkelijk moeilijk is om iedere keer weer een onderwerp te vinden voor deze dagelijkse Keep Swinging weblog, maar dat valt mee. Het probleem zit'm vaak in: wat zal ik kiezen? En als de inspiratie soms op een laag pitje staat, dan is er altijd nog dat grote archief van plaatopnamen, gemaakt vanaf die eerste jazz opname uit 1917 van de Original Dixieland Jass (!) Band.
Vandaag vijftig jaar geleden, op de vierde maart 1958, 't was op een dinsdag, stappen vijf man van het Miles Davis Sextet de Columbia studio binnen aan de 30th Street in New York City. Het is 7.00 p.m. Het zijn Miles Davis, trompettist, Cannonball Adderley, die de altsax draagt, John Coltrane met de tenorsax in zijn koffer, Paul Chambers heeft de vracht met zijn grote bas en dat geldt ook voor Philly Joe Jones met zijn drumstel. Red Garland, de pianist, is nog niet verschenen.
Na het stemmen spelen ze een paar nummers om warm te draaien en het geluid te testen en beginnen ze maar vast aan het opnemen van het eerste nummer Sid's Ahead. Sid is een bekende discjockey hier in New York; Symphony Sid ( = Sid Torin). Als ze beginnen met de opnamen, is Red Garland nog niet gearriveerd, dus proberen ze het beste ervan te maken. Dat is dan ook de reden dat achter de solo's van John Coltrane en Cannonball Addereley wat aarzelende pianoakkoorden klinken, gespeeld door Miles Davis. Als Miles een solo overneemt zijn alleen nog maar de bas van Paul Chambers en de de bekkens van Philly Joe Jones hoorbaar als begeleiding. Het tweede nummer dat ze spelen is Little Melonae, genoemd naar de dochter van componist Jackie McLean. Het nummer wordt gespeeld zonder Cannonball Adderley en Red Garland, die nog steeds niet verschenen is. Waarom Cannonball Adderley niet meespeelt wordt duidelijk als je bedenkt dat Miles Davis en John Coltrane dit nummer reeds, met dezelfde ritmebegeleiding, in oktober 1955 opnamen, tijdens één van hun eerste opnamesessies: met dien verstande, dat Red Garland deze keer miste. Voordat het laatste nummer wordt vastgelegd komt Red Garland binnen; helaas weten we niet waarom hij zo laat is, want dat zou dit verhaal compleet maken ( brug omhoog? vast in het verkeer? of gewoon verslapen?). Het laatste nummer dat vastgelegd wordt is Dr. Jackle. Dit nummer, ook een Jackie McLean compositie, wordt later op de Milestones .. Miles Davis album verminkt tot Dr. Jekyll.
De twee originele nummers die terecht kwamen op deze genoemde Milestones plaat zijn Sid's Ahead en Dr. Jackle; Little Melonae blijft voorlopig op de plank liggen en wordt pas heruitgegeven op The Complete Recordings of Miles Davis with John Coltrane box.
De versie van het nummer, die toegevoegd is aan de Japanse heruitgave 1958-Miles is in feite een oktober 1955 versie van dit nummer, waarbij Red Garland wel aanwezig was (let op de piano). De rest van de titels op de Columbia LP Milestones ... Miles Davis dateren van een maand eerder, en werden opgenomen op 4 februari 1958. De opnamesessie van 4 maart, nu vijftig jaar geleden, duurde tot 10.00 p.m.
