Oscar Alemán: su fallecimiento. ( = Oscar Alemán: passed away). El guitarrista Oscar Alemán qur tuviera notable actuación en radiotelefonia en las décadas del 30 al 50 (sic) falleció ayer a consecuencia de una larga enfermedad. ( = The guitarist Oscar Alemán who made a remarkable career and is known for numerous radio programs during the 1940s up to the 1960s (!) has passed away after a long illness ).

This is the first sentence in El diario La Prensa, an Argentine news paper, in an article that announces the fact that Oscar Alemán passed away on the 14th of October 1980.

Today we commemorate the fact that Oscar Alemán, the Argentine guitar player and entertainer, passed away 28th years ago in Buenos Aires (Argentina). While doing some research in old Doctor Jazz Magazines I found some rare pictures in an article by Herman Openneer titled Een Jack Glazer Story.( Doctor Jazz nr. 82 page 22 - 42.) Jack Glazer, drummer, made a career in music from 1925 up to the year 1977 when Herman wrote this article. Jack Glazer played in 1933 in the Baker Boys and joined Josephine Baker at one of her tours along European venues. In that Baker Boys Oscar Alemán was playing the guitar. The article gives some interesting information I love to share with you later; today I love to show you two rare pictures, I never saw before, by the Baker Boys featuring Oscar Alemán. The first one are the Baker Boys in Brussels, Belgium in September 1933. I will later give you all names of the artists, but Oscar Alemán is present as the second from the left in the front row. The second picture was made in Budapest, Hungary late December 1933 according the Christmas tree behind drummer Jack Glazer. In front you can see Josephine Baker dancing with her impressario, while Oscar Alemán ( at the right) and one of the band members are dancing and clapping their hands.

I hope to make a blog about this great 1933 tour by Josephine Baker and the Baker Boys later.

On the 18th of October 2008 the Hot Club de Boedo will commemorate the fact that Oscar Alemán passed away 28 years ago with a concert at the Auditorium of AMIA ( Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina ) organized by the AMIA and the Instituto de Jazz y Música Contemporánea of the University of Floral (Argentina). This Institute for jazz and modern music is affiliated to the International Society of Jazz Research. The Hot Club de Boedo contains Waldo Fonseca: guitar and leader; Heldo Fonseca: clarinet; Martín López Goitía: rhythm guitar and Julián Pierángeli: drums. Special guests are María Vivas vocal and Matías Bahillo, trumpet.
Next year (on the 20th of Februari 2009) we hope to celebrate the fact that Oscar Alemán was born 100 years ago in the neighbourhood of Resistencia in the Chaco province in the north of Argentina. As soon as festivities are planned in Buenos Aires I hope to share the info with you.

( = De gitarist Oscar Alemán, die een lange carriere achter de rug heeft m.n. in talloze radioprogramma tijdens de jaren veertig tot en met zestig (!) is na de lang ziekbed overleden. )

Zo begint de aankondiging in El Diario La Prensa, een groot dagblad in Buenos Aires (Argentinië), dat het overlijden van Oscar Alemán op 14 oktober 1980 in zijn primera sección meldt.

Vandaag besteden we aandacht aan het feit dat Oscar Alemán, de legendarische Argentijnse gitarist, overleed; vandaag 28 jaar geleden. Op zoek naar informatie in oude Doctor Jazz Magazines stuitte ik op een artikel van Herman Openneer getiteld Een Jack Glazer Story.( Doctor Jazz nr. 82 blz. 22 t/m 42.) Jack Glazer, slagwerker, kon in dat artikel terugzien op een carriere in de muziek, die begon in 1925 tot op het moment dat Herman het verhaal in 1977 optekende. In 1933 speelde hij een seizoen bij de the Baker Boys en ging met Josephine Baker op tournee door Europa. In die bewuste Baker Boys speelde ook Oscar Alemán mee op gitaar en om de één of andere reden was dit artikel me helemaal ontgaan. Het artikel geeft interessante informatie over deze tournee en ik wil daar later nog eens uitgebreid op terug komen. Ik wil vandaag wel twee foto's plaatsen uit dit artikel, die ik nog nooit gezien had. De eerste is een foto van de Baker Boys, gemaakt in september 1933 in Brussel. Ik zal de namen van de bandleden jullie nu besparen, dat komt later wel. Oscar Alemán vind je op de voorste rij, tweede van links.

De tweede foto is gemaakt Budapest, Hongarije eind december 1933. De foto moet rond de kerstdagen gemaakt zijn, te zien aan de kerstboom achter slagwerker Jack Glazer. Vooraan zie je Josephine Baker die met haar Oosteuropese impressario danst en Oscar Alemán (rechts), die al dansend en handenklappend op de dansvloer staat met een ander lid van de band.

Ik hoop later nog eens uitgebreid terug te komen op deze tournee van Josephine Baker met haar Baker Boys uit 1933.

Op 18 oktober 2008 herdenkt de Hot Club de Boedo het feit dat Oscar Alemán 28 jaar geleden overleed met een concert in het Auditorium van de AMIA ( Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina ), een concert georganiseerd door diezelfde AMIA en het Instituto de Jazz y Música Contemporánea van de universiteit van Floral (Argentinië). Volgend jaar, rond 20 februari 2009, hopen we het feit te herdenken dat Oscar Alemán 100 jaar geleden geboren werd in Resistencia in de provincie Chaco in het noorden van Argentinië. Zodra er festiviteiten gepland zijn in Buenos Aires zal ik dit op deze blog vermelden.

Aurex Jazz All Stars (1982)

Twenty-six years ago, during the first week of September 1982, several concerts were sceduled by a great all-star band, labeled as the Aurex Jazz All Stars in Tokyo and Osaka as part of the Aurex Jazz Festival. Other jazz musicians billed were Dave Brubeck and Jaco Pastorius. I love to share you some fragments of the 1982 concert by the great Aurex Jazz All Stars.

This is a fragment of the September 1982 Aurex Jazz Festival in Japan, with a great band in which you'll recognize Dexter Gordon, Jay Jay Johnson, Clark Terry and Kai Winding in the front line. The rhythm section contains Tommy Flanagan at the piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Richard Davis bass and Roy Haynes drums. This all-star band was recorded on an hard to find LP titled Aurex Jazz Festival (1982): All Star Jam.

Most members of this Aurex Jazz All Stars band don't need further introduction. Dexter Gordon, who plays a great solo in this first tune, would make,a few years later, a great film, titled Round Midnight, as Dale Turner, a lonely jazz musician who tries to survive in the 1950s Paris Jazz Scene - in fact a reconstruction of the lives of Lester Young and Bud Powell. Actually the tune Milestones was the final tune recorded during that concert with all members back on stage. In It's All Right With Me both Kai Winding and Jay Jay Johnson, refer in an interview with the Japanese presentators, to their cooperation during the 1950s as Jay and Kai playing together again after more then 24 years ............. Enjoy their version of It's All Right With Me.

In fact this was one of the last public perfomances by the Danish born Kai Winding who would pass away in New York May 1983. The final fragment I love to share with you is a tune in which the Aurex Jazz All Stars are augmented with a big band. The info says it's I'll Remember April. The music is great. Enjoy it.

Zesentwintig jaar geleden, begin september 1982, vond in Japan het Aurex Jazz Festival plaats met concerten in o.a. Tokyo en Osaka. Er stonden o.a. concerten gepland met musici als Dave Brubeck en Jaco Pastorius. Ik wil vandaag beelden laten zien van een concert met de zgn. Aurex Jazz All Stars.

Dit is een fragment van begin september 1982 gemaakt tijdens het Aurex Jazz Festival in Japan, met een fantastische band, een all-star groep, met in de eerste lijn grote namen als Dexter Gordon, Jay Jay Johnson, Clark Terry en Kai Winding. De ritmesectie bevat Tommy Flanagan aan de piano, Kenny Burrell op gitaar, Richard Davis op bas en Roy Haynes slagwerk. Deze all-star band, genaamd de Aurex Jazz All Stars is ook op plaat verschenen als Aurex Jazz Festival (1982): All Star Jam.

De meeste leden van de Aurex Jazz All Stars band behoeven geen nadere introductie. Dexter Gordon, prominent aanwezig op het eerste nummer Milestones, zou een paar jaar later een schitterende film maken getiteld Round Midnight. Hij speelt hierin de rol van Dale Turner, een eenzame jazzmuzikant, die probeert te overleven in de Parijse Jazzscene van de jaren vijftig. In feite is het een reconstructie van de levens van Lester Young en Bud Powell. Het nummer Milestones, hier aan het begin, was eigenlijk de afsluiter van het concert, met alle artiesten nog eens op het podium. In It's All Right With Me treden zowel Kai Winding als Jay Jay Johnson voor het voetlicht en worden kort geinterviewd. Hierin refereert de Japanse presentator, middels de tolk, aan hun succesvolle samenwerking als Jay and Kai meer dan vierentwintig jaar daarvoor. Genieten dus van een hernieuwde samenwerking in It's All Right With Me.

In feite was dit concert één van de laatste publieke optredens van de uit Denemarken afkomstige jazztrombonist Kai Winding, die een half jaar later in New York City overleed. Het laatste fragment bevat de All-Star formatie uitgebreid met een groot orkest. Het nummer staat getiteld als I'll Remember April. Schitterende muziek als afsluiter van dit korte overzicht.

The Hot Club de Boedo performed on Thursday the 14th of October at the Salón de la Unión Vecinal Liniers Sud, in Buenos Aires (Argentina). The concert was oganized to remember the day that Oscar Aleman passed away 27 years ago. Special guest was Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo, a trumpet player. I told you about that event some days ago in a previous blog. A film fragment of their performance on the 14th of October 2007 has been posted.

It is a pity that the sound quality of this film is rather bad, so it is hard to recognize that Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo is a very good trumpet player, also leader of the Mr. Dixie Jazz Band.

This Argentine traditional jazz band played on festivals all over Argentina and Europe ( Lisbon and Paris) and became Mejor Banda Europea de Dixie y como Mejor Solista ( Europe's Best Dixieland and Solists ) at the First Euro Festival de Jazz Dixieland- New Orleáns held in Rueil Malmaison, a suburb of Paris, June 2006. And .... more important, they sound very good and play some good music.

I found two film fragments where you can hear the band playing and these fragments have become pieces of art - a kind of licked sound clip with cartoons and movie fragments; much better then the Boedo filmfragment above. I think it gives Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo and his men a fair chance to present themselves. Enjoy it !!

De Hot Club de Boedo speelde op donderdag 14 oktober 2007 in de Salón de la Unión Vecinal Liniers Sud, in Buenos Aires, Argentinië. Het concert stond in het teken van Oscar Aleman die op die dag 27 jaar geleden overleed. speciale gast die avond was de Argentijnse trompettist Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo. Ik heb over dit gebeuren uitgebreid verslag gedaan in een eerdere bijdrage. Er is sinds kort een filmfragment beschikbaar van dat concert van 14 oktober 2007.

Jammer dat de beeld- en geluidskwaliteit van het optreden zo mager is. Hierdoor is het moeilijk om te ontdekken welke kwaliteiten de gastspeler / trompettist Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo heeft, leider van de Mr. Dixie Jazz Band.

Deze Argentijnse dixielandband speelde in het verleden op jazzfestivals in heel Argentinië, maar ook in Europa (Lissabon en Parijs) en werd zelfs Mejor Banda Europea de Dixie y como Mejor Solista ( Europa's Beste Dixieland Band plus de solistenprijs ) tijdens de First Euro Festival de Jazz Dixieland- New Orleáns ( Eerste Europese Dixieland-New Orleans Jazz Festival ) in Rueil Malmaison, een voorstad van Parijs, juni 2006. Maar ..... veel belangrijker ...... ze klinken erg goed en hun spel maakt me nieuwsgierig.

Ik vond twee filmfragmenten, die die indruk bevestigen. Bovendien zijn ze veel beter opgenomen en vakkundig tot clips verwerkt met animatie en fragmenten uit oude films en krijgen we eindelijk een goede indruk van de vakkundigheid van van de leden van de band en van Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo in het bijzonder, die kan laten zien wat hij kan. Genieten dus !

One of the most active groups in playing the music of Oscar Aleman in Buenos Aires and surroundings seems to be the Hot Club de Boedo. These four active musicians are Waldo Fonseca at the solo guitar, Martin Lopez Goitia on the rhythm guitar, Heldo Fonseca clarinet and Julian Pierangeli at the bass.
They play in the style of the Hot Club de France, in Argentina represented by the legendary group of Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing, that featured Oscar Aleman on the guitar, Hernan Oliva on the violin, Dario Quaglia rhythm guitar, Andres Alvarez bass and Ramon M. Caravaca drums. This famous group played in the Hot Club style and made 5 records for Odeon Argentina in 1941 and 1942 before Hernan Oliva left the band. These two men: Oscar Aleman and Hernan Oliva were a great couple in music, but had strong ambivalent characters which caused a break off.

This band wants to play tribute to the three legendary Argentine musicians Oscar Aleman, Hernan Oliva and Eduardo Ravera. On Thursday the 14th of October 2007 they will give a concert at the Salón de la Unión Vecinal Liniers Sud, in Buenos Aires to remember the day that Oscar Aleman passed away 27 years ago. Special guest will be Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo, a trumpet player.

This summer the band gave some concerts in honor of Hernan Oliva and I found some fragments from a double concert they gave with the Ensamble Typhoon de la Escuela de Oficios Musicales which is directed by Heldo Fonseca, the clarinet player of The Hot Club de Boedo. I love to share with you two fragments by the Hot Club de Boedo, playing some tunes:

The Typhoon Ensemble of the School of Music plays a very basic version of Ritmo Loco ( Crazy Rhythm ) and it is good to learn that these young people are enjoying playing this great music.

Eén van de meest actieve groepen, die vandaag de dag in Argentinië de muziek van Oscar Aleman spelen lijkt de Hot Club de Boedo te zijn. Deze vier musici zijn: Waldo Fonseca op gitaar, Martin Lopez Goitia op ritmegitaar, Heldo Fonseca op klarinet en Julian Pierangeli aan de bas.

Ze spelen in de stijl van de Hot Club de France, die begin jaren veertig in Argentinië geintroduceerd werd door de nu legendarische groep Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing, met Oscar Aleman op gitaar, Hernan Oliva op viool, Dario Quaglia op ritmegitaar, Andres Alvarez op bas en Ramon M. Caravaca slagwerk. Deze beroemde groep maakte vijf platen op het Argentijnse Odeon label in 1941 en 1942 voordat Hernan Oliva de groep voorgoed verliet. Op zondag 14 oktober 2007 is het 27 jaar geleden dat Oscar Aleman overleed en dit willen ze herdenken met een concert in de Salón de la Unión Vecinal Liniers Sud, in Buenos Aires. Speciale gast is trompettist Guillermo Lancelotti Izquierdo.

Eerder dit jaar gaf de band concerten ter ere van Hernan Oliva en ik vond een paar fragmenten van een dubbelconcert met de Ensamble Typhoon de la Escuela de Oficios Musicales ( = Typhoon Ensemble ( met een groep studenten van de muziekschool) die geleid wordt door Heldo Fonseca, de klarinetspeler van de Hot Club de Boedo. Ik vind het leuk om een paar nummers te laten horen.

De studenten van de muziekschool spelen een eenvoudige versie van Ritmo Loco ( Crazy Rhythm ) en het is leuk om te horen dat ze er veel plezier aan beleven.
