Op mijn verzoek plaatste Jørgen gisteren een blog, vanwege een handoperatie en die bijdrage werd, hoe kan het ook anders, ik had het kunnen weten, de cd "Harry Reser - Trainin' The Fingers" met heruitgaven van Edisonopnamen van Harry Reser. Aangezien oefenen op dit moment geen verkeerde bezigheid is, heb ik hier de vertaling van zijn bijdrage geplaatst met als titel: Harry Reser - Vingeroefeningen.

Harry Reser (1896-1965)
Banjo-virtuoos Harry Reser (1896-1965) was één van die drukbezette en overijverige band- en sessieleiders van de jaren twintig. Zijn gigantische platenproductie werden uitgebracht onder tientallen pseudonymen, waarvan de Six Jumping Jacks en de Cliquot Club Eskimos waarschijnlijk vandaag de dag de bekendste zijn. In 2008 bracht het label Document Records een cd uit met 18 heruitgaven door Harry Reser's Rounders oorspronkelijk uitgebracht op het Edison label. De 18 titels dateren alle van de periode 1925 en 1929 en bevatten opnamen van zijn orkest, voor Edison meest onder het pseudonym The Rounders, van lichtvoetige populaire nummers van dat moment. Verder bevat de heruitgave ook nummers met pianobegeleiding, die getuigen van zijn virtuose banjospel in nummers als The Clock and the Banjo, The Old Town Pump, Lollypops, Heebie Jeebies, Trainin' the Fingers en Jade. De nummers met orkest hebben humoristische en spitsvondige titels als Wait'll It's Moonlight, Paddlin' Madeline Home, Hi-Ho The Merrio!, Fire! (An Alarming Novelty), Horses en Highways Are Happy Ways, dit laatste wellicht als opbeurdend nummer voor in de file.

Net als eerdere heruitgaven op het Document Records label in de serie The Edison Collection is het originele geluid vakkundig gerestaureerd door Larry Tedder en het cd-hoesje bevat de originele catalogusnummers van de oude Edison Diamond Discs en opnamedata, maar geen bezettingen. Deze bezettingen zijn waarschijnlijk niet teruggevonden op de Edison administratie, maar kan voor een deel gereconstrueerd worden aan de hand van de Brian Rust discografieën. Wie van het originele geluid uit de jaren twintig houdt, zal lak hebben aan deze omissie, want Harry Reser's bands brachten in die tijd vooral een collectief geluid - zonder solo's en strak gearrangeerd. De lichtverteerbare banjo-piano duetten zijn een genoegen om naar te luisteren.........

Harry Reser is zonder twijfel één van de grootste virtuozen op de tenorbanjo en zijn ragtimeachtige novelty composities zullen altijd gedreven navolgers stimuleren hun vingers te trainen ........ De banjo is zo'n instrument, dat uit prehistorische periodes lijkt te stammen - populair in de tijd toen er nog geen goede geluidsversterking was, werd dit instrument gebruikt door rondtrekkende minstrels en vaudeville artiesten. Aangezien de eerste plaatopnamen nog volledig akkoestisch werden opgenomen bleef de banjo in de eerste helft van de jaren twintig superieur aan de veel zachter klinkende gitaar. Pas na 1925, toen de plaatopnamen electrisch opgenomen werden en geluidsversterking mogelijk werd, verloor de banjo zijn nut en moest zijn plek inruilen voor de gitaar. Harry Reser geldt nog steeds als een icoon op de banjo - zijn techniek, zijn vingervlugheid, virtuositeit en, bovenal, zijn frivole lichtvoetig repertoire zijn nog steeds een must voor de serieuze banjoist en bieden de verwende jazz- en dance-bandliefhebbers de zo broodnodige dagelijkse variatie. While your regular editor of the keepswinging blog is recovering from yet another hand surgery that prevents him from using his fingers at the computer for a couple of days, I was asked to fill in an entry. And why not post some lines on a subject that might cheer up and add help to a soon recovery of our dear friend?

Banjo virtuoso Harry Reser (1896-1965) was one of the busiest and most prolific bandleaders and session men of the 1920s. His massive recorded output was released under numerous pseudonyms, among them The Six Jumping Jacks and The Cliquot Club Eskimos probably are best known today. However, in 2008 Document Records brought out a cd featuring 18 recordings by Harry Reser and his orchestra on the Edison label.
The eighteen recordings at the disc are recorded between 1925 and 1929 and cover both band performance of light hearted popular tunes of the period and examples of Harry Reser's phenomenally nimble artistry as an instrumentalist in banjo-piano duets like "The Clock and the Banjo," "The Old Town Pump," "Lollypops," "Heebie Jeebies," "Trainin' the Fingers," and "Jade."
The band sides on the disc have sparkling and humorous reading of tunes like "Wait'll It's Moonlight", "Paddlin' Madeline Home", "Hi-Ho The Merrio!", "Fire! (An Alarming Novelty)", "Horses" and "Highways Are Happy Ways"



Like other cd reissues in Document Records' series of recordings from the Edison label there has been maintained a fair sound restoration of the original discs and the leaflet has listed original disc numbers and recording dates, but there is a lack of information on band members, probably not available in the original Edison files. Never mind these details, the music on the disc is a feast for all lovers of the original sound of the roaring twenties and further leaves the opportunity to thrill to the lightning-quick dexterity of the banjo-piano duets



Harry Reser is justly considered one of the greatest virtuosi on the tenor banjo ever, and his compositions for that instrument of novelty ragtime inspired pieces still challenge other devoted followers to keep training the fingers. To end this, here's an example of Howard Alden trying to cope with Reser's gymnastics in the well known "Lollypops"

On the 18th of February 2006 the first contribution of our daily Keep Swinging web log was posted, titled Fats And More. Since that first publication nine hundred ( = 900 ) daily blogs have been posted. Yesterday I thought that it might be nice to play myself a record recorded in February 2006 and guess what record I found? .......... Kenny Garrett - Beyond The Wall - Recorded at Right Track Recording, New York on the 19th up to the 21st of February 2006. Isn't that sheer coincidence? I made a contribution about that record a few days ago .... Kenny Garrett - Beyond The Wall. On the 2nd of February 2006, Spats Langham and Mike Litton recorded their album Lollipops, a good alternative.

This record, released by LAKE (LACD226) contains 17 tracks, most ragtime tunes and fingerpicking numbers on the banjo by Thomas Spat Langham, a British guitar and banjo player and a 1920s style vocalist accompanied by Martin Linton at the piano.

It was a very good chioce to play myself this record, as Spats plays several Harry Reser tunes I really like. What to think about Crackerjack, Fair and Warmer and the title tune Lollipops? - great Harry Reser banjo solos, accompanied by Martin Litton at the piano. I like the tunes that are played in the originally arrangements the best, like the Reser solo's but also the piano solo's closely related to Jelly Roll Morton ( Original Jelly Roll Blues ) or the Fats Waller tunes like the Jitterbug Waltz or Viper's Drag. It learned me that Mike Litton is a great stride piano player. A great album to play today.

I found a fragment of a 2006 concert by the Dutch Andors Jazz Band at the Leisure Centre of Bude (UK) at the Bude Jazz Festival where they played in augustus 2006 with Thomas Spats Langham as special guest on the banjo. Enjoy Spats Langham and the Andor's regular banjo player Johan Lammers in their interpretation of a banjo duel in Chinatown My Chinatown. The banjo player on the right is Spats Langham; on the left Johan Lammers.

Op 18 febrauri 2006 plaatste ik de eerste bijdrage in de dagelijkse Keep swinging Weblog, getiteld Fats And More . Wie had ooit verwacht dat twee-en-een-half jaar later de negenhonderdste bijdrage gepost zou worden. Vandaar dat ik het gisteren leuk vond om vandaag aandacht te besteden aan een opname, die ook in februari 2006 werd vastgelegd. Ik ging op zoek en vond .......... Kenny Garrett - Beyond The Wall - Opgenomen in de Right Track studio in New York op 19 t/m 21 februari 2006. Als dat geen toeval is? Laat ik nou net deze plaat het afgelopen weekend besproken hebben in de bijdrage Kenny Garrett - Beyond The Wall ( = Achter de Muur)? Dan dus maar op zoek naar een alternatief en jawel - Op 2 februari 2006 maakten Spats Langham en Mike Litton hun album Lollipops; een prima keus !!
Deze plaat, uitgebracht op LAKE (LACD226) bevat 17 titels, meest ragtime tunes, maar ook fingerpicking banjo solos vastgelegd door Thomas Spat Langham, een Engelse gitarist en banjoist ( en zanger in de jaren twintig stijl). Hij wordt begeleid door Martin Linton aan de piano.

Een prima keuze overigens om deze plaat vandaag te spelen - vooral de Harry Reser banjo solo's zoals Crackerjack, Fair and Warmer and de titelsong Lollipops boeien me altijd, zeker ook dankzij de uitstekende pianobegeleiding door Mike Litton. Vooral de titels, die qua arrangementen het dichtst bij het origineel blijven kunnen me het meest boeien, zoals de eerder genoemde Reser solo's, maar ook de pianosolo's van Mike Litton, zoals Jelly Roll Morton's Original Jelly Roll Blues en Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz en Viper's Drag. Deze Mike Litton is een prima stride pianist. Een mooie plaat om juist vandaag af te spelen.

Ik vond een fragment van een optreden uit 2006, waarin de Nederlandse Andors Jazz Band optreedt in het Leisure Centre van Bude (Engeland) tijdens het Bude Jazz Festival augustus 2006, met als speciale gast Thomas Spats Langham op de banjo in een duet met de reguliere banjoist van de band Johan Lammers. Hoewel hun soli op de banjo's soms een aardige omweg maken, komen ze toch beide weer veilig terug op hun basis: Chinatown My Chinatown. Links zit overigens Spats Langham en rechts Johan Lammers.

Mysterious Mose

Mysterious Mose (Doyle)- Harry Reser and his Radio All-Star Novelty Orchestra ( 30 March 1930 )

Today just a short contribution about a great 1930 hit Mysterious Mose. All recordings of this tune in my collection are from:
April 1930:

• Bobby Dixon Broadcasters
• Ted Weems and his Orchestra
• Rube Bloom Bayou Boys
• Karl Radlach and his Orchestra.

More contemporary recordings:

• R. Crumb Cheap Suit Serenaders (1976),
• the Dutch White House Orchestra
• the Crooks, the string band of Frenk van Meeteren. (both 1986).

An interesting version of this tune is to be found in the Fleischer cartoon Mysterious Mose, featuring Bimbo. The girl is, of course, an early version of good old Betty Boop. This is the third Fleischer production in which Betty Boop plays that was released. It was released as a Talkartoon on the 26th of December 1930.

 
One of my most favorite versions of Mysterious Mose is the version by R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit serenaders ....... Mysterious Mose:

The Hit of the Week version of Mysterious Mose might be  the most rare Durium record from the past. It was recorded by Boby Dixon's Broadcasters, a group by vocalist Dick robertson ( recorded April 1930)

 

 
Last, but not least, the version of two Dutchmen, Professor Peter (Peter Van Alphen) and Doctor Dick (Dick Heymans),founders of the Small Instrument Society. Enjoy it !!

Vandaag een korte bijdrage rond het nummer, een top hit in 1930: Mysterious Mose. Alle opnamen, die ik in mijn verzameling heb, dateren van April 1930:

Een andere bekende versie is die uit de tekenfilm van Max Fleischer getiteld Mysterious Mose, met Bimbo. Het meisje in de film is, natuurlijk, een vroege vorm vanBetty Boop. Ze was daarvoor nog maar twee keer eerder te zien geweest in een Fleischer cartoon. Deze film werd uitgebracht als Talkartoon 26 December 1930.

Waarschijnlijk de meest zeldzaamste versie is die op een kartonnen Hit of the Weekplaat uit 1930.  Er zijn maar een paar exemplaren van bekend. Het werd in april 1930 opgenomen onder de naam van de Bobby Dixon's Broadcasters, een band o.l.v. Dick Robertson.

Banjo Crackerjacks

Once in a while I play my copy of the shown LP compilation, Banjo Crackerjax featuring 14 recordings by Harry Reser. I bought the Lp a long time ago when I was trying to learn and play Reser's "The Cat And The Dog" on the guitar, as I wanted to hear the original source. Anyway, I gave up on the second and third section of the piece, put my guitar away and decided never to touch it again (- at least for a couple of days). The music was too complicated to master on the six string guitar, but the fascination with Reser's amazing fretwork on the four string banjo remained. By the way, the LP has since been re-issued on a cd, still available from Yazoo Records

The novelty rags composed by Harry Reser, available on the shown LP and on the mentioned web, keep challenging banjo players to develop their chops. I found three examples of accomplished banjoists doing their best to cope with Reser's demanded gymnastics on the fretboard.
