Professor Peter & Doctor Dick

Today a contribution made by two guest editors, Professor Peter and Doctor Dick (members of the Small Instrument Society).
Since the summer of 2005 Peter Van Alphen aka Professor Peter, and Dick Heijmans aka Doctor Dick, play the music of the 1920s and 1930s on their ukuleles. They became fascinated while listening to music of bands like the Bill Brooker's Jug Band, Robert Crumb, the British TV-series The Singing Detective and a group of musicians titled The Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Both Peter as Dick had an ukulele at home, so it was the most obvious conclusion to take that little instrument for making music.
We learned that the internet was an inexhaustible source of inspiration and information. Searching on terms like Tin Pan Alley gave hunderds of hits. Music of the 1920s and 1930s as played by dance bands have survived on numerous reissues and because it were dance bands, the music was often more important than the lyrics, as the music was made for dancing. We tried to find the complete lyrics to use in our performances.
The foundation of the so-called Small Instrument Society was a logical step, as we al loved these small instruments. You could see it as a steppingstone for the instruments we use in our little group. We use at our concerts, at least, four different ukuleles, and also a banjolele and a bas-o-lele ( an invention of the Doctor ). Other instruments we use are the mandoline, the musical saw, the kazoo, a jug, washboard and the harmonica. Finally we shouldn't foget to mention the use of the mini-drum, to be played by one foot.

Sinds de zomer van 2005 zijn (Professor) Peter van Alphen en (Doctor) Dick Heijmans actief in de muziek van de jaren ’20 en ’30. De interesse is gegroeid na regelmatige ontmoetingen met muziek van bijvoorbeeld de Bill Brookers Jugband, Robert Crumb, The Singing Detective en Boulevard of Broken Dreams . De keuze voor ukulele ligt voor de hand, als je beiden het instrument al jaren in huis hebt en regelmatig in de hand neemt.
Het internet bleek een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie en materiaal: zoeken op Tin Pan Alley was als vissen in een overvolle vijver. Muziek uit de twenties en thirties is bekend door de plaatopnamen van dansorkesten. Het ging om het dansen en minder om de teksten. Hooguit werd het refrein een keer gezongen; veel van de oorsponkelijke tekst werd weggelaten. De prof en de doc scheppen er veel genoegen in om de hele tekst bij elkaar te zoeken en het liedje weer in ere te herstellen.
De geboorte van de Small Instrument Society was een logisch gevolg van de keuze voor kleine instrumenten. Je zou het als een kapstok kunnen zien, waar het duo zijn activiteiten aan ophangt. Op dit moment worden voor elk optreden minstens vier verschillende ukuleles meegenomen; dan nog een banjolele en een bas-o-lele (uitvinding van de Doctor). Verder een mandoline, zingende zaag, kazoo's, jug, washboard en mondharmonica's. Tot slot een minidrum, die met één voet te bedienen is.

We tried to find the complete lyrics to use in our performances.We also found out that we were not the only ones fasinated by the ukulele; we found a lot of fellow ukulele players worldwide, like-minded, in countries like the United States, Germany and Japan. We exchanged information which developed the music of our duo in the right way.

Finally we shouldn't foget to mention the use of the mini-drum, to be played by one foot.Well, it seems that our careers are on the way up, as we will go internationally this year at the European Ukulele Festival: 21st - 24th of August 2008 in Groß-Umstadt ( Germany ).

Een andere ontdekking op internet bleek het groot aantal muzikanten, die zich met de ukulele bezig houden. Contacten met collega muzikanten uit (vooral) Amerika, Duitsland en Japan geeft het gevoel tot een grote familie te horen van gelijkgestemden (in dit geval A D F# B of G C E A). Uitwisseling van informatie en tips heeft de ontwikkelingen binnen het duo een goede duw in de rug gegeven.
De geboorte van de Small Instrument Society was een logisch gevolg van de keuze voor kleine instrumenten. Je zou het als een kapstok kunnen zien, waar het duo zijn activiteiten aan ophangt. Op dit moment worden voor elk optreden minstens vier verschillende ukuleles meegenomen; dan nog een banjolele en een bas-o-lele (uitvinding van de Doctor). Verder een mandoline, zingende zaag, kazoo's, jug, washboard en mondharmonica's. Tot slot een minidrum, die met één voet te bedienen is. Het einde is nog niet in zicht, aangezien een eerste optreden in het buitenland tijdens het eerste Europese Ukulelefestival dat wordt georganiseerd van 21 tot 24 augustus 2008 in Groß-Umstadt (Duitsland).
