Golden Gate Orchestra

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

A few weeks ago I found in my record shop, De Drukkerij in Middelburg ( southwest part of the Netherlands) a CD with a 1920s dance band in front, that made me anxious. The CD was titled The Golden Gate Orchestra - Crazy Words, Crazy Tunes ( Document Records DOCD-1104 ). The CD was, as the cover learned, part of the Edison Collection. As far as I remembered I had never heard of that orchestra and of course I didn't had my Brian Rust Discography at hand to verify. The reverse showed me 18 tunes, like Oh Mabel, The Charleston and Everything Is Hotsy Totsy Now ( to list the first three tracks), so unmistakable 1920s repertoire. No additional information about the band, dates, musicians whatsoever.

When I opened the CD at home ( it was sealed as usual) I learned from the notes inside that The Golden Gate Orchestra was a pseudonym to the well established California Ramblers. My first reaction was that I bought a pig in a poke as I have several CDs and tapes with this excellent 1920s orchestra. I played myself the CD and the sound was good and, although the tunes sounded familiar to me, they were a bit different then the ones I had on the excellent The California Ramblers CD released by Timeless.

On January 1925 a sign in the lobby of Proctor's Theatre reads We guarantee the California Ramblers as the best band that played here. Here was the prestigious location, the so-called Congo Room, a dance hall at the 20th floor of the Alamac hotel at Broadway and 71st Street in New York. Here the most important dance bands played. The California Ramblers were such a very popular band in those days, with great musicians like Red Nichols, Adrian Rollini, Tommy Dorsey and Chelsea Quealey. They had already made hundreds of records for different record labels. They recorded under dozens of names depending on the record company that released there records, like, to make a 1925 selection, Palace Garden Orchestra and the Elite Dance Orchestra for the Perfect label, Windsor Orchestra for Grafton, Alamac Hotel ( ! ) Orchestra for Domino, Hollywood Dance Orchestra for cheap labels like Banner, Georgia Melody Makers for Dandy and the Southhampton Society Orchestra for Pathé Actuelle. The more established labels like Columbia used the regular name The California Ramblers and Edison labeled the band as The Golden Gate Orchestra ( there he is !!).
It is a pity that the compilers of this CD didn't mention any names of musicians. They say in their liner notes that it was impossible to name all artists due to their ever changing line up. That's true, but the band has been documented pretty well, so why not making a line-up with the commend that the info is not specified for the full 100 percent. Better some information that might be uncertain, then no information at all.

Isn't it cute that I became victim of the obscure 1920s naming that was created to throw dust in the eyes of the customer? When I had to make a choice in a pile of 78-rpm records I could imagine that this could happen to me, but I hadn't expect that eighty five years later when only record collectors are interesting in this kind of music, producers don't take this men seriously and decide to use misleading information ( or better to omit additional information). One small subtitle on the front cover reading California Ramblers should have been enough.
No problems with the music on this production - I have problems with the info. It sounds good and fits into my collection.

Semilar records of this band in my collection on the Timeless and Jazz Archives labels:
  • Little Ramblers/1924-1927
  • California Ramblers/1925-1928
  • Adrian Rollini/Groups
  • and numerous compilation CDs

De CD was getiteld The Golden Gate Orchestra - Crazy Words, Crazy Tunes ( Document Records DOCD-1104 ).

We guarantee the California Ramblers as the best band that played here.

  • Little Ramblers/1924-1927
  • California Ramblers/1925-1928
  • Adrian Rollini/Groups

Thanks a lot, Hans, for this contribution on Golden Gate Orchestra aka California Ramblers -a great band of the 1920s! - I recognise the situation with the non-info on cd-sleeves, it's an insult against serious collectors, I think. However, the mentioned collection from Document Records seems to be a re-issue of material that already was released on cd some years ago on the small Diamond Cut label. I have this somewhere in my collection and I'll let you know later, if this has more info.
