4Beat6 - The Benny Goodman Experience

4BEAT6 is a Dutch sextet, directed by Frans van Geest, that wants to play tribute to the great jazz clarinet player Benny Goodman, whose 100th birthday will be celebrated in 2009. This week they released their CD 4BEAT6 - The band that plays the music of Benny Goodman! Vol. 1. It contains the music of the Benny Goodman Quintet. During the next season, the 4BEAT6 will be part of the Jazzimpuls Dubbelconcerten at several Dutch jazz venues. The first concert will be on the 27th of September 2007 in the Orpheus Theatre in Apeldoorn ( centre of the Netherlands) with Marije Nie who will perform as a tap dancer.

Benny Goodman, The King of Swing, seems to have become a legendary figure of bygone days for many youngs jazzfans. Like other great names of the 1920s and 1930s they seem to have become degenerated into a budget 10 CD box at Free Record shop, like Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller. Some months ago I found a great 2CD reissue of the French RCA Black & White Series ( our source in the 1970s and 1980s for swing music), titled The Indispensable Benny Goodman "Birth of a Big Band" Volumes 1/2 (1935-1936). Early 1935 Benny played with his orchestra at the weekly coast to coast NBC Network radio program Let's Dance. A very popular radio program, sponsored by the National Biscuit Company, that contained three bands: The orchestras of Murray Kellner, who played in the then popular sweet music style, Xavier Cugat, who had a Latin band and Benny Goodman to play hot dance music. It started on the first of December 1934 and ended the 25th of May 1935. Benny Goodman began its first hotel date at the New York Roosevelt Hotel, where Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians had played their popular sweet music. It became a disastrous engagement that lasted only three weeks: the audience wanted Guy Lombardo-like sweet music.

Benny Goodman added the great trumpet player Bunny Berigan to his orchestra and went on tour to the East Coast, along venues like Ocean Beach Pier in Jackson (Michigan), Elitch's Garden in Denver (Colorado) up to the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles (California). This venue had a dance floor where each weekend 4000 pair of dancers could dance. Here Benny Goodman's four beat swing was born. His orchestra became one of the most popular swing bands of the 1930s and his Quintet, a smaller part of the orchestra, became one of the best quintets of its time. The RCA 2CD set The Indispensable Benny Goodman Birth of a Big Band Volume 1/2 (1935-1936) starts with its first recordings Blue Skies and Dear Old Southland, that brought the Americans to swing and dance the so called Jitterbug.

I found some film fragments of Benny Goodman and his Swing band where you can enjoy his music. The first selection is from the 1937 Hollywood Hotel, with a medley of songs. Rudy Vallee is the announcer. The second fragment is from the 1942 film The Powers Girl.

4BEAT6 is een Nederlands sextet onder leiding van Frans van Geest, dat muziek uit de beginperiode van de grote jazzklarinetist Benny Goodman wil doen herleven. Benny Goodman 100ste geboortejaar wordt in 2009 herdacht. Deze week verscheen hun CD 4BEAT6 - The band that plays the music of Benny Goodman! Vol. 1. Het bevat de muziek van het Benny Goodman Quintet. Tijdens het komende seizoen treedt 4BEAT6 op als onderdeel van de zgn. Jazzimpuls Dubbelconcerten op verschillende podia in Nederland. Het eerste optreden staat gepland voor 27 september 2007 in het Orpheus Theater in Apeldoorn, samen met Marije Nie, die de tap-dance zal doen herleven.

Benny Goodman, The King of Swing, lijkt tegenwoordig voor jonge muziekliefhebbers niet meer te zijn dan een legendarische naam van lang geleden. Net als andere grote namen uit de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw lijken ze verworden tot goedkope 10CD boxen bij Free Record Shop, zoals ook gebeurd is met musici als Louis Armstrong en Fats Waller. Een paar maanden geleden vond ik in de uitverkoop een schitterende dubbel CD heruitgave van de Franse RCA Black & White Series ( onze bron in de jaren zeventig en tachtig als het ging om goede jazz), getiteld The Indispensable Benny Goodman "Birth of a Big Band" Volumes 1/2 (1935-1936). Begin 1935 speelde een nog jonge Benny Goodman met zijn orkest in het wekelijkse populaire radioprograma Let's Dance, dat door NBC Network van coast to coast ( = in heel Amerika te ontvangen) werd uitgezonden. Een erg populair programma, gesponsord door de National Biscuit Company, dat elke zaterdagavond twee uur lang werd uitgezonden. Er speelden steeds drie orkesten, namelijk de bands van Murray Kellner, die voornamelijk in de toen populaire sweet music stijl speelde, Xavier Cugat , met zijn Latin band en Benny Goodman die hot jazz speelde om op te dansen. De eerste uitzending was 1 December 1934 en de laatste 25 mei 1935. Benny Goodman begon kort daarna zijn eerste hoteloptreden in het beroemde New Yorkse Roosevelt Hotel, waar Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians hun populaire sweet music hadden gespeeld. Het werd een flop, aangezien het publiek sweet music wilde horen en niets moest hebben van die wilde muziek van Benny. Dit engagement duurde slechts drie weken en Benny Goodman besloot om voorlopig New York te verlaten en op tournee te gaan.
