Out of the Inkwell

I am fascinated by the 1920s and 1930s cartoons made in the USA by great artists like Walt Disney, Paul Terry, Billy DeBeck or Mannie Davis, to name some known and unknown artist from that period, but I really like the Max Fleischer creations, like Betty Boop, Popeye The Sailorman and Superman, a 1940s creation.

But few people know that Max Fleischer's earliest creation wasn't Betty Boop, but Koko the Clown in his very popular series Out of the Inkwell.
Enjoy one of these animated cartoons, titled Modeling, released by the Out of the Inkwell Films Inc. October 1921.

Thanks to a new book, Out of the Inkwell, Max Fleischer and the Animation Revolution, written by Max Fleischer's son Richard Fleischer ( released by The University Press of Kentucky 2005) I can tell you a bit more about its history.

Max Fleischer, who wasn't satisfied with the quality of the animated cartoons made early XXth century, invented a machine where he could copy film shots to cartoons. This machine was called the Rotoscope and he made his first Out of the Inkwell film in 1916.

It became a mix of film and cartoon and he had worked on it, with his brother Dave ( who was dressed in a clown suit ) filmed and drawed from the original film frames. This first film must have been a great sensation, as for the first time the animated cartoon figures moved so naturally as if they were human beings.

There was one problem - it took one year to make this first film, each night drawing frame by frame until late at night. Cartoon magnate J.R. Bray liked it, but Max had to make one film each month. Thanks to another invention making the drawings not on a paper sheet, but directly on clear celluloid, so they hadn't to draw the background each time again, made that possible.

Max Fleischer made several test films, before the Out of the Inkwell cartoons were released commercially by the Goldwyn-Bray Pictographs. Mind that the artist, visible in the film, is always Max Fleischer himself, filmed as the creator of Koko the clown ( The name of the clown was used in the 1920s only). Each intro differs. In 1921 Max left the Goldwyn-Bray Pictographs, that was broke and produced and released his own films. Between 1921 and 1923 Max Fleischer made all the drawings himself - after that year he stopped it and his brother Dave Fleischer continued the series. I love to show you another film fragment of this Out of the Inkwell series, titled Big Chief Koko, that was released March 1925.

The Out of the Inkwell cartoons are now almost forgotten and dated. The idea of mixing animated cartoons was copied by others, like Walt Disney who created Alice Comedies; primitive copies of Max's idea. Mixing cartoons and real films is still actual and I found a Burger King animation that seems to be inspired by Max Fleischer's Our of the Inkwell series. Enjoy it.

De tekenfilmpjes uit de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw van tekenaars als Walt Disney, Paul Terry, Billy DeBeck en Mannie Davis, om maar eens een paar bekende en onbekende te noemen, fascineren me. Max Fleischer is mijn favoriet; zijn creaties zoals Betty Boop, Popeye de Zeeman en Superman ( ik weet het, dat is jaren veertig) boeien me nog steeds.

Er zijn nu nog maar weinig mensen die weten dat Betty Boop niet Max Fleischer's eerste creatie was, maar Koko, de clown. Hij speelde de hoofdrol in de zogenaamde Out of the Inkwell serie.

Ik heb hier een filmpje, getiteld Modeling, uitgebracht door Max Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell Films Inc. uit oktober 1921. De tekenaar in de film is Max Fleischer zelf.

Dankzij een onlangs verschenen boek, getiteld Out of the Inkwell - Max Fleischer and the Animation Revolution, geschreven door zijn zoon Richard Fleischer, kan ik iets over deze vroege serie vertellen. Het boek werd uitgegeven door The University Press of Kentucky 2005.

Max Fleischer, al vroeg bezig met pen en papier, was niet tevreden met de houterig bewegingen, zoals die op de allereerste cartoons te zien waren. De bewegingen stonden te ver af van de werkelijkheid en daarom ontwikkelde hij een machine waarmee hij filmbeelden kon omzetten tot tekeningen: de Rotoscope. In de huiskamer maakte hij, met zijn broers, zo in 1916 de eerste Out of the Inkwell film.

Het werd een mix van film en cartoon. Zijn broer Dave, verkleed als clown, werd gefilmd en beeldje voor beeldje door Max op papier vastgelegd. De bewegingen van de clown ( hij werd pas in de jaren twintig Koko genoemd), in deze eerste film waren sensationeel; de getekende figuren bewogen als of het echte mensen waren.

Maar er was een groot probleem: Max had een jaar nodig gehad om deze film te maken en dus was het zo niet commercieel interessant. Cartoon magnaat J.R. Bray gaf Max een kans, op voorwaarde dat hij elke maand zo'n film zou afleveren. Dat lukte, dankzij een andere uitvinding, waarbij hij de beeldjes van Koko niet meer op papier, maar op doorzichtig celluloid tekende, zodat de achtergrond niet meer steeds weer opnieuw gecopieerd hoefde te worden. Zo werd de productietijd flink verkort.

Max Fleischer probeerde allerlei nieuwe dingen uit, en maakte verschillende proeffilms voordat de Out of the Inkwell films in de bioscopen kwamen, uitgebracht door de Goldwyn-Bray Pictographs. Een wereldwijd succes. Max speelde steeds als "echt mens" de creator, de tekenaar, die Koko maakte. Geen een intro is hetzelfde. In 1921 neemt Max zelf de productie in handen en richt de Out of the Inkwell Films Inc. op. Tussen 1921 en 1923 maakt Max de films nog helemaal zelf, waarna zijn broer Dave het roer overneemt. Ik heb nog zo'n filmpje gevonden, getiteld Big Chief Koko, uitgebracht maart 1925.

De Out of the Inkwell cartoons zijn nu bijna helemaal vergeten en zien er nu ietwat gedateerd uit. Het idee om beelden en tekeningen te mixen werd later vaker toegepast, denk aan Walt Disney's Alice Comedies, primitieve probeersels, vergeleken met Max Fleischer. Ook nu nog is het mixen van beeld en tekening populair; ik vond een reclamefilmpje voor Burger King , duidelijk geinspireerd door de Out of the Inkwell cartoons van de jaren twintig.

Betty Co-Ed Screen Song

Today I love to tell you something about the Screen Songs, an innovation introduced by the Fleischer Studios during the early 1930s. These Screen Songs were short films where you could listen and sing-along with the latest hits as sung by the artist himself. When the song had been repeated several times, packed up into animated cartoon gags, the original artist would sing the tune. A dancing ball indicated what words, to be seen on the screen, had to be sung. In fact, these 1930s inventions, were karaokes avant la lettre. I will share with you one of those Screen Songs, titled Betty Co-Ed ( J. Paul Fogarty-Rudy Vallee ), released the first of August 1931 and sung by Rudy Vallee, who made it a hit.

In the 1920s animator Seymour Kneitel from Fleischer's studios started to make a series, titled Follow The Bouncing Ball. Max and Dave Fleischer had invented a way to mix animated cartoon and live actors, together during the early 1920s with their series Out Of The Inkwell cartoons. Walt Disney released late 1920s the primitive Alice Cartoons, I talked about some times ago. Although the first Follow The Bouncing Ball series, like Fleischer's Song Car-Tunes were silent films, as soon as the invention of sound-on-film was made they were re-named as Screen Songs. The first one The Streets of New York was released February 1929.
Rudy Vallee, who was born as Herbert Pryor in 1901 in Island Point and passed away in 1986 in Hollywood, was one of those extreem popular crooners of the 1920s and 1930s. He had changed his name in Rudy, because of Rudy Wiedoeft, his great example. He became a band leader in 1927 in Boston where he sung ( although he played alto saxophone and clarinet) and late 1920s he moved to New York where he got a job at the Heigh-Ho-Club. He named his band The Connecticut Yankees. He became a film star and got radio shows which made him extreem popular. He made a lot of top hits, like the Main Stein Song and Betty Co-Ed. Up to 1939 he had ca. 70 hits, which indicates his great popularity. During the 1940s up to his death he stayed popular as a musical and film star.

When you listen to the Screen Songs as made by the Fleischer Studios the tunes released were the Hits of the week. No, I don't mean the card board record as you see above, but I mean that the tunes were the actually hit songs of the moment; the songs whistled by the butcher boy and heard on the radio. Among the Screen Songs, released for 1931 where Somebody Stole My Gal, Alexander's Ragtime Band, That Old Gang of Mine, You're Driving Me Crazy, Kitty From Kansas City ( also sung by Rudy Vallee) and My Baby Cares For Me. The card board Hit of the week records, as shown above, where cheap records that contained also the Hits of the moment, played by a studio band, directed by Bert Hirsch or Phil Spitalny. Betty Co-Ed was released as a Hit of the week in the third week of October 1930 played by Phil Spitalny's Music. You can listen to a fragment here as it was released on the first 2CD in the Complete Hit of the Week Recordings by Archeophone. While listening to the Betty Co-Ed version on the film, especially the first time it is played, it seems as if the Phil Spitalny's Hit of the week version was used. I have had the experience with other tunes as well, like the title tune Betty Boop, also recorded by Phil Spitalny. Up to now I don't have indications that Phil Spitalny's Music is the (anonymous) band that plays the music on some Betty Boop / Screen Song films. I guess that both bands just used the official arrangements, which makes that the tunes sounds similar. Mind that popular music during the early XXth century were spread by sheet music.
Enjoy Betty Co-Ed as a 1931 Fleischer Screen Song, sung by Rudy Vallee. ( It's a pity that it seems that the music isn't synchronous with the film images ).

Vandaag wil ik wat meer vertellen over de Screen Songs, een hype tijdens de begin jaren dertig, geintroduceerd door de Fleischer Studios. Deze Screen Songs waren korte films, waar je kon luisteren en meezingen met de laatste hits, gezongen door de artiest zelf. Eerst werd de melodie gespeeld, verpakt in een komisch tekenfilmpje en daarna werd het lied gezongen door de artiest; met hulp van de tekst onderin beeld en een springend balletje, konden de kijkers dan meezingen. In feite hebben we het dus over karaoke, hoewel dat woord toen nog niet bekend was. Ik heb één zo'n Screen Song uitgezocht, getiteld Betty Co-Ed ( J. Paul Fogarty-Rudy Vallee), uitgebracht op 1 augustus 1931. Op de film wordt het gezongen door Rudy Vallee, die er een hit mee had.

Nu bedoel ik even niet de kartonnen platen met de gelijknamige titel, maar dat vooral de top hits van het moment, zeg maar de liedjes die de slagersjongen floot, die te horen waren op de radio, werden gebruikt. Als je de Screen Songs van 1931 bekijkt zie je dan ook een heleboel bekende nummers als: Somebody Stole My Gal, That Old Gang of Mine, You're Driving Me Crazy, Kitty From Kansas City ( also sung by Rudy Vallee) en My Baby Cares For Me. De kartonnen Hit of the weeks, zoals hierboven afgebeeld, waren goedkope platen, die ook de Hits van het moment lieten horen, gespeeld door een studio-orkest onderleiding van Bert Hirsch of Phil Spitalny. Betty Co-Ed kwam als Hit of the week plaat uit in de derde week van oktober 1930 gespeeld door Phil Spitalny's Music. Je kunt luisteren naar een fragment zoals dat te vinden is op de eerste dubbel CD uit de serie the Complete Hit of the Week Recordings door Archeophone. Als je luistert naar de instrumentale versie, waarmee het Screen Song filmpje begint en je vergelijkt dat met de Phil Spitalny versie dan is de overeenkomst duidelijk. Deze ervaring heb ik ook met andere Hit of the weeks en Fleischer filmpjes, zoals bij de herkenningsmelodie Betty Boop dat gespeeld wordt door Phil Spitalny in 1932. Tot op heden heb ik geen aanknopingspunten die wijzen op een samenwerking tussen Durium of Phil Spitalny en de Fleischer studio's en hou ik het er op dat het komt omdat de officiele arrangementen werden gebruikt, zodat de muziek op beide hetzelfde klinkt. Bedenk dat de verspreiding van nieuwe liedjes in het begin van de vorige eeuw voornamelijk via bladmuziek ging.

Geniet van Betty Co-Ed zoals dat in 1931 door Fleischer als Screen Song werd uitgebracht, gezongen door niemand minder dan Rudy Vallee. ( Helaas loopt geluid en beeld niet helemaal synchroon)

Kan iemand me helpen aan en DVD met daarop Fleischer Screen Songs? Ik ben daar al een tijdje naar op zoek.
