Keep (it) Swinging: Alice Comedies

Ask someone what Alice and Walt Disney have in common and everbody will mention Walt Disney's 1951 production Alice in Wonderland; but few will know that one of Walt Disney's first film series was based around a little girl, Alice

The Alice Comedies were released between 1924 and 1927 and I learned that today, eighty years ago, 21st of February 1927, the film Alice at the Rodeo ( in Dutch just titled Rodeo), was released. Alice Comedies were rather primitive films / cartoons featuring animated characters and a live-action girl. The technique used, looks like the way Max Fleischer combined film and cartoon in one screen in his famous Out of the Inkwell cartoons.

Alice was not always played by the same person: there are versions with Virginia Davis and versions with Margie Gay ( both are acting in the two films below) and in the film she normally has a lot of ( real-life and animated) friends. The films were made ingenious for those days, although they look very primitive now. They used a white clothes as a background for Virginia to play Alice and she had to play her part in pantomime. This was filmed and later the animators would add the animation around her filmed image.

As I remember, a few years ago, these early primitive cartoons were nearly all lost or in a bad shape, but thanks to the fact that Dutch copies were found in our film archives, most films could be restored and safed. That's why the next little documentary about Alice is in the Dutch language - enjoy it - it is good excercise for you.

Unfortunally I can't show you the birthday-film Alice at te Rodeo, but I found another one as an example of an Alice Comedy: Alice Helps The Romance, made three month earlies ( 15th of November 1926). Enjoy this early primitive Disney release.

Vraag een willekeurig iemand wat de woorden Alice en Walt Disney met elkaar te maken hebben en iedereen zal de Disney productie uit 1951 noemen: Alice in Wonderland; maar weinigen zullen weten dat Disney als één van zijn eerste producties een serie rond het kleine meisje Alice maakte.

De Alice Comedies werden uitgebracht tussen 1924 en 1927 en omdat precies vandaag, tachtig jaar geleden, op 21 februari 1927, de film Alice at the Rodeo ( in het Nederlands getiteld Rodeo) werd uitgebracht, heb ik dat gisteren weer eens bekeken. De Alice Comedies filmpjes zijn nog al primitief in onze ogen; het waren films, waarbij getekende figuren samen optraden met een gefilmd meisje, genaamd Alice. Deze techniek werd afgekeken van de Max Fleischer Out of the Inkwell filmpjes, waarbij Fleischer ook tussen allerlei getekende figuren gefilmd werd.

Alice werd niet steeds door dezelfde actrice gespeeld: er zijn versies met Virginia Davis en met Margie Gay; beide figureren in de twee voorbeeld films hieronder.. In de filmpjes hebben ze een heleboel echte en getekende vriendjes. De films waren voor die tijd ingenieus gemaakt, hoewel het resultaat in onze ogen vreselijk primitief is. Er werd een wit laken opgehangen waarvoor Virginia de rol van Alice speelde; dit werd gefilmd en later tekenden de animators de figuurtjes er om heen.

Ik herinner me dat een paar jaar geleden de meeste filmpjes als voorgoed verloren beschouwd werden, totdat bleek dat er een heleboel in Nederlandse archieven bewaard waren. De volgende korte documentaire over Alice is dan ook in het Nederlands.

Ik kon geen exemplaar van de tachtigjarige vinden op het internet, dus werd het een voorbeeld van drie maanden daar voor, de film Alice Helps The Romance van 15 november 1926. Geniet van deze vroege Walt Disney film.
