”I knew Django Reinhardt well. He used to say jazz was gipsy – we often argued over that. I agree with many Americans I met in France who said he played very well but with too many gipsy tricks. He had very good technique for both hands, or rather one hand and a pick, because he always played with a pick. Not me, I play with my fingers. There are things you can’t do with a pick – you can’t strike the treble with two fingers and play something else on the bass string. – But I admired him and he was my friend. He was my greatest friend in France. We played together many times, just for ourselves. I used to go to his wagon, where he lived. I’ve slept and eaten there – and also played! He had three or four guitars. Django never asked anyone to go to his wagon, but he made an exception with me. Zowel Django Reinhardt als Oscar Alemán vierden triomfen in het Parijs van de jaren dertig. Beide gitaristen trokken de aandacht door hun uitzonderlijk muzikale kwaliteiten op de gitaar. We weten dat ze vrienden waren ... dat ze elkaar opzochten na een optreden en dat Django wel eens aanklopte bij Oscar als hij zijn instrument vergeten was of om snaren verlegen zat. Ze hebben samen gespeeld ....  dat is zeker, binnen de wanden van Django's woonwagen. Nooit stonden de twee samen op het podium noch zijn er foto's waarbij beiden samen op staan - Wat zou dat mooi geweest zijn.  Jørgen Larsen zette één en ander op een rijtje in de blog Django Reinhardt versus Alemán.  (Jo Larsen)

CONCERTS / CONCERTEN / FESTIVALS

Twee vocalisten, een gitaar en een kop thee ... meer is er eigenlijk niet nodig voor een geslaagd jazzconcert. Wouter Hamel, de jonge crooner en enfant terrible van de Nederlandse jazz, wiens naam tot in Japan gespeld wordt en Francien van Tuinen, de Groninger zangeres, die behept is met, als we de critici mogen geloven, a unique voice and exceptional natural rhythmic flexibility, she has guts, excellent diction and perfect timing lieten met slechts de begeleiding van Maarten van der Grinten horen, hoe jazz hoort te klinken. Zondagmiddag 17 november 2013 leek alles samen te zijn gekomen voor een onvergetelijk jazzconcert in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen):  Twee getalenteerde vocalisten, die, begeleid door slechts één gitaar, een sfeer konden opbouwen, die door een volle zaal erg gewaardeerd werd. Jazz zoals jazz hoort te zijn ..... Intiem en zonder toeters en bellen: Wouter Hamel-Francien van Tuinen in Porgy en Bess . ( Hans Koert)

Op zondagmiddag 3 november 2013 bewees de  Amerikaanse trompettist Jeremy Pelt, alom geroemd en gelauwerd vanwege zijn spel, waarom hij genoemd wordt als één van de meest veelbelovende jazztrompettisten van de wereld. Met zijn Jeremy Pelt Show, waarin saxofoniste Roxy Coss met haar saxofoonspel verraste, veroverde hij in twee lange sets moeiteloos het "verwende" publiek van Porgy en Bess. Weer zo'n mooi concert van Porgy en Bess! (Hans Koert)

Een maand geleden vond in Bathmen, een voorstad van Deventer, een uniek dubbelconcert plaats van het kwartet van Fapy Lafertin en Lollo Meier, met in het voorprogramma de hotclubformatie Quatre Tickets de Swing ( met zang van Ita van Dijk). Ondanks dat het concert alweer een maand geleden werd georganiseerd, wil Keep (it) Swinging graag een verslag van Georg Lankester over dit unieke gebeuren plaatsen: Fapy Lafertin-Lollo Meier: Jazz op een zondagmiddag ( Georg Lankester)

A month ago a unique double concert was scheduled by Swing4all in its series Jazz on a Sunday afternoon in  Bathmen, a suburb of  Deventer (The Netherlands), October 13th, 2013, with the well known Fapy Lafertin - Lollo Meier Quartet. The hot club formation Quatre Tickets de Swing ( with vocals by Ita Van Dijk) opened the concert. Keep (it) Swinging loves to share a review of this unique memorial concert by guitarist Georg Lankester of the support band Quatre Tickets de Swing.

Equinox, een enthousiaste groep musici uit Den Haag, debuteerde vijf jaar geleden met een opvallend album Here & Now; onlangs verscheen hun tweede: Face The Music met meer dan twaalf nummers jazz, die de sfeer van de jaren vijftig en zestig, de tijd van de beroemde Blue Notealbums, doet herleven - De bijgevoegde dvd brengt, als kers op de taart, beelden uit een mooi vastgelegd concert. Een CD-DVD die niet in je platenkast mag ontbreken. (Hans Koert)  

Equinox, a The Hague based jazz quintet, released, five years after its debut with the album Here and Now - a cd and a dvd, recorded live, brings back the atmosphere of the music of the 1950 Blue Note Jazz era .... A must have!

Making a solo piano album was a great experience for Jim Beard, for decades a sought after accompanist and composer.  When you play with an ensemble you have strength in numbers and someone else is keeping time, but here I’m exposed and naked, he said, but it’s a great feeling not to have to worry if I should suddenly choose to drop time and do something more freely.  Get your copy of this great Jim Beard piano album: Show of Hands (Hans Koert)

Recently the first albums in the NDR 60 Years Jazz Edition have been released by Moosicus. The NDR started its live radio jazz programs in 1952, edited by Hans Gertberg and its first surviving tape featured a double concert by the US bebop icon at the trumpet Dizzy Gillespie and the German New Jazz Stars, directed by Hans Koller, featuring Albert Mangelsdorff and Jutta Hipp.  A great series of albums to watch out for ......: Dizzy Gillespie + Hans Koller New Jazz All Stars 1953 ( Hans Koert)

 The Tom Dempsey Trio has that specific sound of the jazz guitar in combination with the groovy sounds of the Hammond B3 organ .... a popular sonic palette.  Tom Dempsey's latest album, entitled Saucy, features Ron Oswanski at the Hammmond B3 organ  and Alvin Atkinson on drums. 't Is zomer en dus vakantietijd. Je merkt dat aan het aantal dagelijkse bezoekers, maar niet aan het aantal interessante bijdragen op de Keep (it) Swinging blog. De afgelopen maand werd het project rond Ruud Jacob's debuut op Newport 1958 afgesloten met een terugblik op zijn optredens tijdens de Wereldtentoonstelling in Brussel (Expo '58) en tevens lanceerde ik een nieuwe MY JAZZ LINKS, die mijn "oude" linksite, die niet meer geüpdate wordt, gaat vervangen.

Als Ruud Jacobs in augustus 1958 na ruim een maand terugkeert uit Newport (NY), na een tussenstop in Blokker en op de Expo in Brussel, wil hij maar één ding en dat is .... uitslapen .... In New York was het haast elke nacht drie, vier uur. in Brussel idem-dito.  Zijn optreden in Newport vat hij samen als 't was 'n  Jazz Feest ..... Het slot van een uitgebreide terugblik op het International Youth Orchestra o.l.v. When Ruud Jacobs, Dutch bass player who was invited to play in the International Youth Band, known as the Babel's Band,  at the 1958 Newport festival, returned in Holland, he was worn out and wanted to have a long lie-in. He had performed with the band its final concerts at the Dutch Blokker festival and the World's Exhibition in Brussels: Expo '58. In New York we played until dawn, like in Brussels ......, but it was really a Jazz Feest ..... Het nieuwe album van Quatre Tickets de Swing, getiteld Swinging and Singing, doet zijn naam alle eer aan ....  het bevat een uur swingende standards, die in de jaren dertig en veertig van de vorige eeuw populair waren in de Franse jazzscene. Op zes nummers wordt het ensemble aangevuld met vocaliste Ita van Dijk. Het album, met zijn opvallende hoes, waarop de sfeer van de muziek treffend is weergegeven, bevat verder instrumentale nummers, uit het Europese swingtijdperk, goed gespeeld en geschikt om te luisteren of te dansen ..... Een must voor iedereen die op zoek is naar relaxte swing uit de tijd van Django .....


The new CD by the Dutch jazzensemble Quatre Tickets de Swing, entitled Swinging and Singing, presents a repertoire of pleasantly swinging standards made popular at the 1930s and 1940s Parisian jazzscene. Six tracks have the singing of vocalist Ita van Dijk, and the remaining tracks are famous instrumental compositions that relive the atmosphere of the European Swing Era, everything perfectly produced and designed for both dancing, wining and dining as well as your casual listening enjoyment.

Vijftig jaar Doctor Jazz  Magazine ....... Een jarige die Abraham ziet.  Wat geef je aan een jubilaris, die eigenlijk alles al heeft? Fifty years Doctor Jazz  Magazine ....... A Jazz Magazine that won't see fifty again .... unique in the world. How should such a 50 year old magazine remember his readers? Doctor Jazz Magazine released a 2cd with mostly unissued performances of the Legends of Jazz (1926-1952) entitled Dinnertime for Hungry Collectors, refering to the 1937 Raymond Scott hit Dinner Music For A Pack of Hungry  Cannibals - it's a treasure-chest with unheard recordings from Louis Armstrong and Count Basie up to Don Redman, Adrian Rollini and Jimmie Lunceford ...... a feast for senior (78rpm) jazz record collectors

Last year we commemorated the 100th birthday of the Argentine guitar player Oscar Aleman, who was born the 20th of February, 1909 in the small town of Machagui in the republic of Argentina. This landmark in jazz history was commemorated by his relatives, fans and colleagues and in the summer of 2008 a plaque in the hall of his apartment was revealed in his honor by the local authorities of Buenos Aires. Next year we will commemorate that other giant on the guitar, his friend and colleague Django Reinhardt; two musicians who always are mentioned in one and the same breath. Django Reinardt, the Belgian born gypsy guitar player, developed into a legendary instrumentalist, whose sound is easily recognizable and loved by thousands of admirers. The Dutch band Quatre Tickets de Swing, is such a band, fully dedicated to the music of Django Reinhardt.

The band Quatre Tickets de Swing was founded more then ten years ago in Zwolle ( eastern part of The Netherlands) by Georg Lankester, Pieter Swart, Arthur Siero and Eric Buijsen to spread the music of their common idol. As an honor to Django's music it released its third album, titled Django Souvenirs. The quartet contains two guitars ( solo guitar is played by Georg Lankester and the rhythm guitar by Arthur Siero), a double bass ( Eric van Buijsen) and a saxophone or clarinet ( Pieter Swart). Although we normally associate Django with his 1930s Quintette du Hot Club de France recordings, featuring two rhythm guitars, himself at the solo guitar, a bass player and a violin player: the well known Stephane Grappelli, this Dutch group has chosen for a saxophone player, one solo and one rhythm guitar and a bass player - the line-up used by Django during the war and post war period, as Stephane Grappelli had moved to England. The album contains 14 tracks in the so-called Hot Club style; swing tunes from the 1930s up to the 1950s and compositions by Django. Although the title suggests that this is a recollection of Django Reinhardt compositions - it is not; the album contains only four Reinhardt compositions and one Django arrangement. Fact is, that all tracks have been recorded by Django during his 25 year musical career. What to think about the opener, Chicago ( full name Chicago ( That Toddling Town), originally a hit from the early 1920s, but recorded by Django in the 1930s or the less heard tune Clair de Lune, which was recorded by Django in April 1947. The quartet was enlarged with a vocalist Ita Van Dijk, who is a freelance journalist in daily life. She is to be heard on three tracks, like the well known Django composition Nuages, the Charles Trenet composition Que Reste-t'il de nos amours and the tune Ricordati Ragazzo, a 1949 hit by Natalino Otto, based on the Nat King Cole hit Nature Boy. This tune was originally written by eden ahbez (sic) ( small letters), a rather excentric Californian, who didn't wrote his name with capitals as he found that only names of the Supreme Being should be written with capitals ( He was a Buddhist). Django recorded it, like Charles Trenet Menilmontand, track 13 on the record, with an Italian rhythm section in January 1949 in Rome. It has become a great selection of Reinhardt classics abd rare heard more obscure tunes. Both Pieter Swart, who plays some good solos, as Ita Van Dijk, who has a pretty voice, have struck me. It's a pity that she is only to be heard singing on three tracks ....... Django Souvenirs is not the quartet's first album. A few years ago it released: Remembering Django and Hawk (2005).

On Sunday the 13th of December, 2009 its latest album, Django Souvenirs, will be released with a concert at the partycentrum De Horst in Deventer ( at 2:00 pm). Afgelopen jaar herdachten we dat 100 jaar geleden de Argentijnse gitarist Oscar Aleman geboren werd in een klein dorpje bij Machagui in de binnenlanden van Argentinië. ( 20 februari 1909 ). Deze mijlpaal werd uitgebreid herdacht in zijn geboorteplaats door zijn kinderen en kleinkinderen en talloze fans en een half jaar eerder door de onthulling van een plaquette in de hal van zijn voormalige appartement in Buenos Aires door het gemeentebestuur van die stad. Volgend jaar staat er weer zo'n gedenkwaardig feit op de rol, namelijk de 100ste geboortedag van zijn vriend en collega Django Reinhardt; twee gitaristen, die vaak in één adem samen genoemd worden vanwege hun swingend gitaarspel. Django Reinhardt, geboren op 23 januari 2010 in Walonië (België), ontwikkelde zich tot één van de beste gitaristen ter wereld en groeide uit tot een legendarische muzikant, wiens geluid hooglijk gewaardeerd wordt door zijn duizenden fans. De groep Quatre Tickets de Swing, is zo'n band, die zich helemaal aan de muzikale nalatenschap van Django gewijd heeft. Quatre Tickets de Swing werd ruim tien jaar geleden opgericht in de buurt van Zwolle door Georg Lankester, Pieter Swart, Arthur Siero en Eric Buijsen met als doel de muziek van Django in ere te houden. Vanwege de aanstaande honderdste geboortedag van hun idool brengen ze een nieuwe CD uit: Django Souvenirs.

Het kwartet omvat twee gitaristen ( Georg Lankester speelt sologitaar en Arthur Siero de ritmegitaar), een bassist ( Eric van Buijsen) en een saxofonist ( Pieter Swart). Hoewel we Django meestal associeren met zijn optredens met het Quintette du Hot Club de France uit de jaren dertig, dat meestal twee ritmegitaren, één sologitaar ( Django zelf), een bassist en een violist ( Stephane Grappelly natuurlijk) bevatte, heeft de Quatre Tickets gekozen voor de bezetting, zoals die in en net na de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebruikt werd door Django, toen Stephane vertrokken was naar Engeland. ................

De CD bevat zo'n 14 nummers, alle in de zogenaamde Hot Club stijl; swingnummers uit de jaren dertig tot vijftig en composities van Django. Hoewel de titel wellicht suggereert dat deze plaat louter Django's composities bevat, is dat niet het geval; Je vindt maar vier composities van zijn hand en een enkel arrangement. Wel zijn alle titels ooit door Django en de zijnen gespeeld tijdens zijn 25-jarige carriere. Zo'n swingende binnenkomer is het openingsnummer Chicago ( voluit Chicago ( That Toddling Town)), in feite een hit uit begin jaren twintig, maar door Django in de jaren dertig in het schellak vastgelegd; of het zelden gehoorde nummer Clair de Lune, dat eind jaren veertig werd opgenomen (april 1947 ). Het kwartet is voor deze CD uitgebreid met een zangeres, Ita van Dijk, in het dagelijks leven freelance journaliste, die met haar prettige stem de juiste toon weet te vinden. Ze is, helaas, maar op drie nummers te horen, zoals op de bekende Django compositie Nuages, het Charles Trenet nummer Que Reste-t'il de nos amours en het nummer Ricordati Ragazzo, een hit uit 1949 van een Italiaans sterretje Natalino Otto, gebasseerd op de Nat King Cole hit Nature Boy. Dit nummer werd geschreven door eden ahbez (sic), een nogal excentrieke "hippie" avant-la-lettre, die zijn naam zonder hoofdletters schreef uit respect voor het hogere; hij was boeddist. Django nam het op, samen met o.a. het Charles Trenet nummer Menilmontand ( ook op deze plaat) tijdens een monster-opnamesessie in Rome ( met een Italiaanse ritmesectie) in januari 1949. Ook de saxofonist, Pieter Swart, blinkt op deze plaat uit - zijn mooie toon en solo's valen op.

Deze CD "Django Souvenirs" is een mooi aandenken geworden voor een ieder die de muziek van Django graag beluistert. Django Souvenirs is niet de eerste uitgave van deze groep: eerder brachten ze het album Remembering Django and Hawk (2005) uit.

Op zondag 13 december 2009 wordt hun plaat Quatre tickets de Swing: Django Souvenirs gelanceerd tijdens een concert in het partycentrum De Horst in Deventer ( 14.00 uur). Tijdens dit concert kan de CD tegen gereduceerde prijs bemachtigd worden, maar je kunt natuurlijk ook altijd een exemplaar laten reserveren via het emailadres op hun website .

Remembering Django and Hawk

Remembering Django & Hawk is the title of a CD production by the Dutch Hot Club formation Quatre Tickets De Swing. The quartet features Peter Swart on reeds and vocal, Georg Lankester solo guitar, Arthur Siero rhythm guitar and Eric Van Buijsen bass. The CD was recorded in November 2004.

The Hot Club Style, originated by Django Reinhardt, a Belgian born French gypsy guitar player who developed this style of music during the 1930s with his Quintet du Hot Club De France. It became very popular during the following decades and, up to now, it has a small but active group of admirers. Not so strange as the music is rhythmical, melodious and easy accesible. The fans of this kind of music are gathered into the Stichting Hot Club De France Nederland , which coordinates meetings and other activities.

I heard this quartet a few months ago in Kloetinge (southwest part of the Netherlands - 350 km north of Paris) and I enjoyed it. Their CD, Remembering Django & Hawk refers to the Giants in Swing Django Reinhardt and Coleman Hawkins. The latter lived some years in The Netherlands during the 1930s, before he left Europe in 1939. He was very popular due to his recordings with the Ramblers and his performances in clubs and dance halls.
The CD Remembering Django & Hawk has 18 tracks from the Hot Club repertoire ( like Coquette, Swing '42 and of course J' attendrai , made famous by Django, and standard from the American songbook like the always swinging Them There Eyes, It Had To Be You and How Can You Face Me.

I don't think this record is to find in the ordinary record shop (are this kind of records still in an ordinary record shop nowadays?), so if you want a copy contact me and I'll forward your request to the band.

Remembering Django & Hawk is de titel van een CD uitgebracht door de Nederlandse Hot Club formatie Quatre Tickets De Swing. Het kwartet bestaat uit Peter Swart op saxen en klarinet ( tevens zang), Georg Lankester sologitaar, Arthur Siero ritmegitaar en Eric van Buijsen bas. De CD werd opgenomen in november 2004.

De Hot Club Stijl werd door Django Reinhardt, een in België geboren Franse gitarist met zigeunerbloed, in de jaren dertig in Parijs met zijn Quintette Du Hot Club De France, ontwikkeld. Het werd heel populair in de jaren daarna en nog steeds kent het een kleine, maar fanatieke groep aanhangers van deze muziek. Niet verwonderlijk overigens, want de muziek is ritmisch, melodieus en daardoor erg toegankelijk. De fans hebben zich verzameld in de Stichting Hot Club De France Nederland , die de concerten coördineert en bijeenkomsten organiseert.

Ik hoorde dit kwartet spelen tijdens een optreden een paar maanden geleden in Kloetinge ( 350 km. ten noorden van Parijs in het Zeeuwse land) en ik heb ervan genoten. De titel van hun CD, Remembering Django & Hawk refereert aan de Giganten van de Jazz en Swing Django Reinhardt en Coleman Hawkins. Laatstgenoemde leefde in de jaren dertig enkele jaren in Nederland, voordat hij in 1939 terugkeerde naar de VS. Hij werd bekend om zijn plaatopnamen met De Ramblers en zijn optredens in clubs en danszalen.

De CD Remembering Django & Hawk bevat 18 nummers uit het Hot Club repertoire, zoals Coquette, Swing '42 en natuurlijk Django's beroemdste nummer J' attendrai en nummers uit het Amerikaanse swingrepertoire, zoals het altijd swingende Them There Eyes, It Had To Be You en How Can You Face Me.

Ik geloof niet dat de CD te koop is in de normale platenzaak ( zijn daar überhaupt nog swingplaten te koop, vraag je je wel eens af), dus mocht je een exemplaar willen, neem dan contact met me op en ik speel je verzoek door naar de band.
