Jingle Bells

For most people the 26th of December is a day to visit parents or in-laws, relatives or friends; a day to relax; not a day to launch serious subjects. Yesterday I introduced you to some recently discovered cardboard records; one contained the well known Christmas song Jingle Bells. Today some less serious interpretations of this tune, you'll really appreciate; a tune originally composed in 1857 by an American minister called James

The first one is a clip as made by Ondrej Havelka and his Melody Makers. I posted a contribution about this great Czech retro-band and entertainer in a previous blog. I'm sure you'll like their interpretation of this great standard.

The second fragment is made by a well known dixieland band, that played in the so-called Frisco style. It was founded in the Disney Studio, where, in the late 1940s, some animators played records for fun during their lunch time. They started a band named The Hugageedy 8, later the San Gabriel Valley Blue Blowers, but they got known as the Firehouse Five plus Two, featuring men like trombone player Ward Kimball. They became the house-band of the Disney organization.

In the fragment I'll show you Mr. Walt; sure, no one else but Walt Disney himself. He introduces the audience the magic mirrow, which is very helpfull to show the public his office. Of course he wants to show some hard working men, but, when the cat's away the mice will play ......

Well, it learns to be carefull for magic mirrors or web cams or what-so-ever !! Your boss might watch you.

The last fragment is not very serious; mayby your children or grand children are still around - maybe you can interest them for this kind of music. It tells the story of Steve Stripling, who has to do a concert, but his accompanist can't be in time for the show, so they found a replacement - his old music teacher. Well, not his first choice I guess. Mind the fact that it seems that he wasn't a very gifted student and that he changed instruments .....

Voor de meesten is 26 december, Tweede Kerstdag, een dag om ouders of schoonouders te bezoeken, of bij familie of vrienden binnen te wippen. Een dag om te ontspannen of uit-te-buiken zo je wilt - geen dag om al te serieuze kost in een weblog aan te snijden. Gisteren introduccerde ik Jingle Bells op een zeldzaam stukje karton; deze keer drie maal Jingle Bells op een wat luchtiger manier; een bijna doodgespeeld nummer, dat oorspronkelijk in 1857 door een Amerikaanse dominee, genaamd James, gemaakt werd.

Het eerste filmfragment is gemaakt door Ondrej Havelka and his Melody Makers. Ik al een in een eerdere bijdrage over dit retro-orkest verteld. Ik weet zeker dat deze schitterende muziekclip in de smaak zal vallen.

En? Teveel gezegd?

Het tweede fragment is gemaakt door één van de bekendste dixieland bands, die spelen in de zgn. Friscostijl. Een band, die ontstond tijdens de lunchpauze in de Disney studio, waar het personeel eind jaren veertig jazzplaten draaide. Ze gingen het naspelen en zo ontstond de The Hugageedy 8, later omgedoopt tot de San Gabriel Valley Blue Blowers, maar uiteindelijk bekend geworden als het Disney huis-orkest, the Firehouse Five plus Two, met daarin musici als Ward Kimball, de bekende gangmaker en trombonist.

In het fragment, dat onderdeel is van een grotere film, laat Mister Walt, inderdaad niemand minder dan Walt Disney zelf, het publiek door de toverspiegel kijken naar zijn personeel, dat hard aan het werk is. Nou, ja, hard ......... hard op een andere manier dan hij verwacht.

Pas dus op voor toverspiegels of webcams op het werk, zou ik zeggen; je baas kan alles in de gaten houden !

Het laatste fragment is wel het minst serieuze, maar mochten er kinderen of kleinkinderen rondlopen dan kun je, op eigen risico, dit fragment wel laten zien van een concert van Steve Stripling. Steve speelt een muzikant, die een concert moet geven, maar dan te horen krijgt dat zijn vaste begeleider niet op tijd aanwezig kan zijn. Als invalster hebben ze zijn oude muziekjuf gestrikt, waar Steve vroeger toch al niet zo goed mee door één deur kon. Bovendien is hij sinds die tijd overgestapt op een andere instrument ....... Een handenwringer als je't mij vraagt !

Mochten uw kinderen en kleinkinderen nu imitatiegedrag vertonen, weet dan dat ik te voren gewaarschuwd heb.

Ondrej Havelka Melody Makers

Some weeks ago I pointed you to the fact that the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, famous because of his legendary concerts in Breda during the late 1970s and 1980s, were still active in Prague. Thanks to some readers we could share some film fragments of the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra performing on one of the bridges in Prague this summer. I also received a CD of this retro-orchestra, directed by Pavel Klikar from one of our Swedish readers. I'll reviews these 2002 recordings later.
I learned from some research that Ondrej Havelka, the crooner of the band, started his own orchestra, named the Melody Maker. If you have been on the Breda concerts you'll remember Ondrej Havelka as the rather shy, a bit frumpy crooner, with his pair of so-called National Health glasses and the typically 1920s hairdress with the parting in the middle. His voice, the timbre, the sound was an exact copy of let's say Noble Sissle singing Sweet Henry. What a thrilling experience !!

Joergen pointed me to the fact that Ondrej Havleka's band, The Melody Makers, is still very active and if you visit its website you learn that they made, at least five or six CDs during the last decade: Ondrey Havelka & His Melody Makers - Off There Noodles (2005) - Jen pro ten dnesní den... (1999) - George Gershwin (1999) - Me To Tady Nebavi (1995) - The Swings (1995). It would be great to listen to these records. I found some film fragments that learns me that Ondrej is still fascinated in making an exact copy of the past. In his films he wants to re-create the atmosphere of the 1930s and 1940s and, really, I enjoyed these great parodies on the 1930s romantic films. I hope you like these films as I did. I hope to review some of his CDs later.

If you love to see and hear this band live, you have to visit Prague, but they also play, next week, in Belgium. They will perform in Izegem (Belgium) in Feestzaal Sint-Jozefscollege on te 6th of October. The orchestra will play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Jaroslav Jezek's Bugatti Step.

Een paar weken geleden wees ik op het feit dat de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, beroemd om zijn concerten eind jaren zeventig begin jaren tachtig nog steeds actief waren in Praag, Tsjechië. Dankzij enkele lezers kon ik filmpjes laten zien van een optreden op één van de bruggen van Praag. Ik ontving ook van een lezer uit Zweden één van de laatste CDs uit 2002 van dit retro-orkest, o.l.v. Pavel Klikar. Ik kom daarover in een latere blog terug.
Ik ontdekte na wat onderzoek dat Ondrej Havelka, de crooner - zanger van de band, zijn eigen orkest begonnen was, genaamd de Melody Maker. Als je er eind jaren zeventig bij geweest bent in Breda, dan herinner je je ongetwijfeld Ondrej Havelka als de ietwat verlegen, sullige zanger, met het ziekenfondsbrilletje en het glimmende glad gekamde haar met middenscheiding. Zijn stem, die klank, dat timbre, die exacte copie van, laten we zeggen een Noble Sissle die Sweet Henri zingt, vergeet je nooit. Wat een ervaring !!.

Joergen wees me op het feit, dat de band van Ondrej Havleka, The Melody Makers, nog steeds erg actief is en als je afgaat op hun website, dan ontdek je dat ze de afgelopen tien jaar minstens een vijf- of zestal CDs gemaakt hebben: Ondrey Havelka & His Melody Makers - Off There Noodles (2005) - Jen pro ten dnesní den... (1999) - George Gershwin (1999) - Me To Tady Nebavi (1995) - The Swings (1995). Ik zou deze CDs graag een keer horen, om te ontdekken of deze band nog steeds die magische klank heeft. Ik vond een aantal filmfragmenten die laten zien dat Ondrej Havelka nog steeds geboeid is door het maken van een exacte kopie van het verleden. In zijn muziekclips weet hij de sfeer van de jaren dertig en veertig perfect te reconstrueren en, echt, ik geniet van deze films, die een parodie zijn op de zoetige romantische films uit de jaren dertig. Ik hoop de CDs van de Melody Makers een keer te kunnen bespreken.

Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra - 2007

In a previous blog I told you about the remarkable and legendary concert by the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra ( Originální pražský synkopický orchestr as they say fluently in the Czech language ) at the Oude Stijl Jazz Festival ( Traditional Jazz Festival ) in Breda, in the southern part of the Netherlands, during the night concert, the 6 May 1978.

A year ago I received a message of Tom S from Denmark who told me had heard the band playing at the Charles bridge in Prague. He sent me a picture I posted at a previous blog. In the meantime I found several contributions from people who had heard that band playing on the bridges of Prague and that it had made a CD. Time to do some research to this band and its leader, Pavel Klikar.

I remember, that, after their successes in the 1970s and early 1980s, the band stopped, due to the fact that most members had to go into military service, but I found out that Pavel Klikar is still an active musician. He still has his Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra that re-creates the old sound of the 1920s. And really, I still feel the cold shiver ran down my spine when I listen to the recordings made during the Breda concert of tunes like Five Foot Two Eyes Of Blue. It makes me very anxious to learn how that band sounds today !!

Pavel Kikar also re-creates Baroque music from the 17th century with his Musica Antiqua Praha and he is an expert in old Czech and Slovak church organs. He made several recordings with this baroque orchestra. It is a pity to read that since 1995 Ondrej Havelka, the great vocalist crooner of the band left the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra and started his own band, named the Golden Prague Syncopated Orchestra. This band is settled in Berlin, Germany and most of the members of the old Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra became members of the Berlin band.

I understood, from an excellent article of Suzanne Smalley, titled New Era for the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra ( Prague Post ), that Pavel Klikar made a new start with the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, with a lot of young members to re-create the sound of the 1920s, with some experiments in the 1930s dance band styles.
I hope that some of you can help to find a recent Original Prague Synvcopated Orchestra album, so I can tell you about the way this great band sounds today.

I found two film fragments I love to share with you, with the orchestra playing on a bridge in Prague. As you can see they sell a CD !! Hope you like it !!

In een eerdere bijdrage heb ik verteld over een fantastisch en legendarisch concert van de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra ( Originální pražský synkopický orchestr in vloeiend Tsjechisch ) tijdens het Oude Stijl Jazz Festival in Breda op 6 mei 1978. Een concert dat velen nog zullen herinneren.....

Een jaar geleden kreeg ik een berichtje van Tom S uit Denemarken, die me meldde, de band te hebben zien spelen op een brug in Praag. Hij stuurde ook een foto, die ik in weer een andere bijdrage geplaatst heb. In de tussentijd hoorde ik ook van anderen dat ze de band hadden horen spelen op één van de bruggen over de Moldau. Bovendien scheen het dat ze een CD hadden opgenomen. Tijd dus om eens wat speurwerk te verrichten naar de band nu en haar leider, Pavel Klikar.

Ik herinner me ergens gelezen te hebben dat de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, na haar successen tijdens de jaren zeventig en tachtig uiteen gevallen was, vanwege het feit dat de meeste leden in militaire dienst moesten. Ik vond dat de band desondanks nog steeds bestaat - en dat de leider Pavel Klikar nog steeds actief is. Hij heeft nog steeds de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra onder zijn hoede, waarmee hij nog steeds probeert de dansmuziek uit de jaren twintig te doen herleven op een zo authentiek mogelijke manier. Echt, ik voel nog steeds het kippenvel over de rug lopen als ik de plaat opzet, die gemaakt werd tijdens het Nachtconcert in Breda en Ondrej Havelka, de zanger, de eerste regels van Five Foot Two Eyes Of Blue inzet. Ik ben dan ook razend nieuwsgierig hoe de band nu klinkt.

Pavel Klikar is momenteel ook actief in de klassieke muziek. Hij speelt, zo authentiek mogelijk (aard van't beestje denk ik), de muziek uit de barok met zijn Musica Antiqua Praha. Hij is een expert in oude Tsjechische en Slowaakse kerkorgels. Hij maakte verschilllende plaatopnamen met dit klassiek barokorkest. Het is jammer om te lezen, in een artikel van Suzanne Smalley ( Prague Post) in New Era for the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, dat er in 1995 een breuk ontstaan is tussen Ondrej Havelka, de grote zanger - crooner van de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra en Pavel Klikar. Ondrej begon een eigen band, genaamd de Golden Prague Syncopated Orchestra. Deze band heeft als standplaats Berlijn en de meeste leden van de "oude" Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra zijn overgestapt.

Ik begreep dat Pavel Klikar een nieuwe start gemaakt heeft met zijn Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, met voornamelijk jonge musici, die het geluid van de jaren twintig doen herleven, met uitstapjes naar de dansmuziek uit de jaren dertig.
Ik hoop dat iemand me op het spoor kan zetten van een recente Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra plaat, omdat ik wil weten hoe ze nu na dertig jaar klinken.
Ik vond twee film fragmenten waarop het orkest te zien is op één van de bruggen over de Moldau, en zoals de filmpjes te zien is, verkopen wel degelijk CDs.

Wie kan me helpen aan een recente CD van de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra? Wie is van plan om binnnenkort naar Praag af te reizen?
