Bo Grumpus

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Today - fun with the Bo Grumpus Ragtime Trio, enlarged with a fiddler, playing String Band Classics on a 2003 Stomp Off Recording ( SOS CD-1388)

The Bo Grumpus Ragime Trio is a group of musicians that was formed around guitar player Craig Ventresco and started as a street band in the San Francisco area.
Mind that there has been another Bo Grumpus band in the 1970s, but that's a complete other one - this trio plays ragtime and folk music from the early XXth century.

The CD, released by Stomp Off is dedicated to the early XXth century string bands - the music as played by bands as the Dallas String Band and the Mississippi Sheiks. Great music, now almost forgotten. For me, this music reminds me to the music of Ian Whitcomb, the piano player, who made numerous albums filled with early XXth century ragtime and vaudeville tunes.

The Bo Grumpus Ragtime Trio on this CD contains Craig Ventresco on guitar, Tom Marion on guitar, mandoline, banjo at that kind of string instruments and Pete Devine on percussion and jug.
For this occasion the trio was enlarged with a fiddler, Rob Kerwin.
They play 26 tunes on this album, all waltzes, marches, ragtimes and coon songs originally from the early 1900s in a tradition that belongs to the rural southern black string bands.

Craig Ventresco plays the guitar and is the leader of the trio. When he was four he started to play the banjo and became interested in ragtime music due to the This Is Ragtime radio program of Terry Waldo. He developed in a skilled guitar player and a virtuoso on the six string banjo.

I found some fragments of Craig playing the guitar. I posted those fragments below.

Pete Devine is the percusionist, which means that he uses all kinds of instruments that belong to the equipment of a string band percusionist, like the washboard, temple blocks, woodblocks, auto horns and the jug to produce the typically bass sound.

Tom Marion plays all kinds of string instruments on this recording, from the guitar up to the mandoline, the ukulele and the banjo. He is a skilled instrumentalist that plays in a lot of string bands.

I found some fragments of Craig Ventresco playing his guitar, here in a duo. Hope you enjoy it.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Thanks a lot, Hans, for sharing this info on Bo Grumpus. As you know, I like this kind of stuff, it's great to know that skilled musicians are keeping the tradition of ragtime alive. - Thanks also for sharing the two video performances, great playing despite the noisy surroundings.
