Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra

The Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra surprised traditional jazz fans during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Founded in the autumn of 1974 by Pavel Klikar it soon became a very popular band all around Europe. They started as a quintet with three wind instruments and a rhythm section featuring a banjo and a piano. No drums - not so strange, as the music they played was from the 1920s when percussion instruments were not used due to problems recording these instruments acoustically. Only a cymbal and woodblock were allowed in accoustic recordings. In 1978 the band was enlarged to a 12 member band like the 1920s dance orchestras. This Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra fascinated me ( and a lot of others) thirty years ago at the Breda Traditional Jazz Festival concerts I discussed before.

Some visitors of my blog pointed me to the fact that the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra was still active in Prague and even had made CDs. Some people had seen the band playing on the bridges of Prague last summer. The short film fragment I'll show you now is from such a performance.

In one of my previous blogs I told about the break between Pavel Klikar and Ondrej Havelka, who started his own band.

The Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra 2002

Thanks to a Swedish visitor of my blog, Ingemar W. I can now listen to a recent 2002 Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra release, titled Goin' Crazy With The Blues And 18 More Tunes From The Golden 1920s. The 7 members band contains Pavel Klikar on trumpet and leader, Jan Simunek violin, Jaromir Konupka clarinet, Zbynek Dobrohruska banjo, Antonin Sturma banjo, Jiri Sicha banjo (also present in the late 1970s) and Petr Wajsar guitar. Vocalist is Alice Bauer who sings on eleven of the 19 available tracks. The music is still great - Pavel Klikar is still a perfectionist in creating that great 1920 sound, that patina in sound that smells as an old acoustic shellak record ( where is the surface noise?). Of course I missed that great voice of Ondrej Havelka and Alice Bauer, although she is a skilled vocalist with that typically 1920s sound, doesn't surprise me on tunes like Susianna, When My Sugar Walks Down The Street and Someday Sweetheart like Ondrej Havelka did 40 years ago.
I fully agree with the next commend as printed in the liner notes: Vysledkem je fascinujici verohodnost dobové atmosféry, jez znovuozivena jakoby magickym strojem casu poskytuje dnesnim posluchacumvsech generaci jedinecny zazitek. ( = What comes out is the fascinating authenticity of the atmosphere of the 1920s which, revived as if by a magical time machine, enables contemporary listeners of all generations to experience something truly exceptional.)

De Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra verraste liefhebbers van de traditionele jazz eind jaren zeventig begin jaren tachtig met hun optredens. Het orkest werd opgericht in de herfst van 1974 door Pavel Klikar en werd razend populair overal in Europa. Ze begonnen als een kwintet met drie blaasinstrumenten en, opvallend, een ritmesectie van piano en banjo. Geen slagwerk ! Vreemd? Eigenlijk niet. De muziek die ze reconstrueerden dateerde uit de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw waarbij er voor het slagwerk geen plaats was in de, toen nog akoestische, opnamestudios. De harde trillingen van het slagwerk zouden de opnamen ontregelen; alleen een bekken en soms een woodblock waren toen toegestaan. In 1978 werd de band uitgebreid tot 12 man zoals gebruikelijk in een dansorkest uit de jaren twintig. Deze Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra fascineerde mij ( en met mij vele anderen) dertig jaar geleden tijdens het Oude Stijl Jazzfestival in Breda. Daarover heb ik eerder uitgebreid geschreven.

Een aantal bezoekers van mijn weblog wezen me op het feit dat de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra nog steeds in Praag speelde en zelfs weer CDs maakte. Men had ze zelfs in juni van dit jaar nog op één van de bruggen van Praag ( Tsjechië) gehoord en gezien en het onderstaande filmfragment ( ik heb het al eens eerder laten zien) is van zo'n optreden.

In één van mijn eerdere weblogs schreef ik al over het feit dat er een breuk was ontstaan tussen de leider Pavel Klikar en publiekslieveling uit de jaren zeventig, zanger crooner Ondrej Havelka. Hij startte zijn eigen orkest.

Dankzij Ingemar W., een Zweedse bezoeker van mijn dagelijkse weblog, kan ik nou één van hun laatste CDs opzetten, opgenomen in 2002 en getiteld Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra Goin' Crazy With The Blues and 18 More Tunes From The Golden 1920s. De zeven leden van de band zijn Pavel Klikar op trompet en leider, Jan Simunek op viool, Jaromir Konupka klarinet, Zbynek Dobrohruska op banjo, Antonin Sturma banjo, Jiri Sicha banjo (hij was ook al in de jaren zeventig aanwezig) en Petr Wajsar gitaar. Zangeres is Alice Bauer die op elf van de negentien nummers te horen is. De muziek is nog steeds geweldig - Pavel Klikar is nog steeds een perfectionist als het gaat om het herscheppen van de muziek uit de jaren twintig; je hoort, ruikt en ziet als het ware zo'n oude schellak plaat uit die tijd ( alleen de ruis ontbreekt). Natuurlijk mis ik die fantastische stem van Ondrej Havelka, hoewel Alice Bauer, een ervaren zangeres, haar best doet te klinken als een zangeres uit die tijd met nummers als Susianna, When My Sugar Walks Down The Street en Someday Sweetheart.

Ik sluit me helemaal aan bij de woorden op de CD: Vysledkem je fascinujici verohodnost dobové atmosféry, jez znovuozivena jakoby magickym strojem casu poskytuje dnesnim posluchacumvsech generaci jedinecny zazitek. ( = De uitkomst is een fantastisch plaat met de originele sfeer uit de jaren twintig, tot leven gebracht als in een tijdmachine. Het is voor luisteraars van alle generaties een uitgelezen ervaring.) Ik hoef hier geen woord aan toe te voegen !!

Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra - 2007

In a previous blog I told you about the remarkable and legendary concert by the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra ( Originální pražský synkopický orchestr as they say fluently in the Czech language ) at the Oude Stijl Jazz Festival ( Traditional Jazz Festival ) in Breda, in the southern part of the Netherlands, during the night concert, the 6 May 1978.

A year ago I received a message of Tom S from Denmark who told me had heard the band playing at the Charles bridge in Prague. He sent me a picture I posted at a previous blog. In the meantime I found several contributions from people who had heard that band playing on the bridges of Prague and that it had made a CD. Time to do some research to this band and its leader, Pavel Klikar.

I remember, that, after their successes in the 1970s and early 1980s, the band stopped, due to the fact that most members had to go into military service, but I found out that Pavel Klikar is still an active musician. He still has his Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra that re-creates the old sound of the 1920s. And really, I still feel the cold shiver ran down my spine when I listen to the recordings made during the Breda concert of tunes like Five Foot Two Eyes Of Blue. It makes me very anxious to learn how that band sounds today !!

Pavel Kikar also re-creates Baroque music from the 17th century with his Musica Antiqua Praha and he is an expert in old Czech and Slovak church organs. He made several recordings with this baroque orchestra. It is a pity to read that since 1995 Ondrej Havelka, the great vocalist crooner of the band left the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra and started his own band, named the Golden Prague Syncopated Orchestra. This band is settled in Berlin, Germany and most of the members of the old Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra became members of the Berlin band.

I understood, from an excellent article of Suzanne Smalley, titled New Era for the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra ( Prague Post ), that Pavel Klikar made a new start with the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, with a lot of young members to re-create the sound of the 1920s, with some experiments in the 1930s dance band styles.
I hope that some of you can help to find a recent Original Prague Synvcopated Orchestra album, so I can tell you about the way this great band sounds today.

I found two film fragments I love to share with you, with the orchestra playing on a bridge in Prague. As you can see they sell a CD !! Hope you like it !!

Can someone inform me how to obtain a CD of this 2007 Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra? Is someone travelling to Prague one of these days?

In een eerdere bijdrage heb ik verteld over een fantastisch en legendarisch concert van de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra ( Originální pražský synkopický orchestr in vloeiend Tsjechisch ) tijdens het Oude Stijl Jazz Festival in Breda op 6 mei 1978. Een concert dat velen nog zullen herinneren.....

Een jaar geleden kreeg ik een berichtje van Tom S uit Denemarken, die me meldde, de band te hebben zien spelen op een brug in Praag. Hij stuurde ook een foto, die ik in weer een andere bijdrage geplaatst heb. In de tussentijd hoorde ik ook van anderen dat ze de band hadden horen spelen op één van de bruggen over de Moldau. Bovendien scheen het dat ze een CD hadden opgenomen. Tijd dus om eens wat speurwerk te verrichten naar de band nu en haar leider, Pavel Klikar.

Ik herinner me ergens gelezen te hebben dat de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, na haar successen tijdens de jaren zeventig en tachtig uiteen gevallen was, vanwege het feit dat de meeste leden in militaire dienst moesten. Ik vond dat de band desondanks nog steeds bestaat - en dat de leider Pavel Klikar nog steeds actief is. Hij heeft nog steeds de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra onder zijn hoede, waarmee hij nog steeds probeert de dansmuziek uit de jaren twintig te doen herleven op een zo authentiek mogelijke manier. Echt, ik voel nog steeds het kippenvel over de rug lopen als ik de plaat opzet, die gemaakt werd tijdens het Nachtconcert in Breda en Ondrej Havelka, de zanger, de eerste regels van Five Foot Two Eyes Of Blue inzet. Ik ben dan ook razend nieuwsgierig hoe de band nu klinkt.

Pavel Klikar is momenteel ook actief in de klassieke muziek. Hij speelt, zo authentiek mogelijk (aard van't beestje denk ik), de muziek uit de barok met zijn Musica Antiqua Praha. Hij is een expert in oude Tsjechische en Slowaakse kerkorgels. Hij maakte verschilllende plaatopnamen met dit klassiek barokorkest. Het is jammer om te lezen, in een artikel van Suzanne Smalley ( Prague Post) in New Era for the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, dat er in 1995 een breuk ontstaan is tussen Ondrej Havelka, de grote zanger - crooner van de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra en Pavel Klikar. Ondrej begon een eigen band, genaamd de Golden Prague Syncopated Orchestra. Deze band heeft als standplaats Berlijn en de meeste leden van de "oude" Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra zijn overgestapt.

Ik begreep dat Pavel Klikar een nieuwe start gemaakt heeft met zijn Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, met voornamelijk jonge musici, die het geluid van de jaren twintig doen herleven, met uitstapjes naar de dansmuziek uit de jaren dertig.
Ik hoop dat iemand me op het spoor kan zetten van een recente Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra plaat, omdat ik wil weten hoe ze nu na dertig jaar klinken.
Ik vond twee film fragmenten waarop het orkest te zien is op één van de bruggen over de Moldau, en zoals de filmpjes te zien is, verkopen wel degelijk CDs.
