Ibrahim Ferrer

Last night I played myself the Buena Vista Social Club documentary and I liked the part with the Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer. In the film he sings a duet with Omara Portuondo in the studio, backed by Ry Cooder at the guitar, that fasinated me. 
I used to have a copy on VHS video, made from a TV performance some years ago, but now I have the original DVD and that is great. This documentary is nowadays midpriced in record shops in The Netherlands. The documentary, made by Wim Wenders, shows how a group of old Cuban musicians, nicknamed the Super-Abuelos, super-grandfathers in Spanish, are going on tour singing their songs and having a lot of success, and fun, at concerts in New York and Amsterdam. Ry Cooder, the American guitar player and composer, took the inititiative of this great experiment. These Buena Vista Social Club concerts were late 1990s and since that time some Super-Abuelos have passed away - so did Ibrahim Ferrer; he died on the 6th of August, 2005.
Ibrahim Ferrer was born, as he tells in the film, in 1927 in a small village near Havanna and was orphaned when he was ten years old. In 1953 he started to play in Pacho Alonso's group in Santiago (Cuba), later renamed as Los Bocucos. They played their Sons, Guaracha's and other up-tempo songs in local dance halls in and around Havanna, but Ibrahim wanted to sing Boleros, but as his voice wasn't good enough, he recalled, he wasn't allowed to do so. In 1996 he recorded with the Afro-Cuban All Stars the album A Todo Cuba le Gusta where he sung the old style Bolero's. In 1999, Ry Cooder heard him singing ( I was just singing a bit for myself, Ibrahim said, and Ry Cooder heard me ..... ) and asked him to sing Boleros in the film. His voice sounds to me like the voice of Dutch singers like André Hazes, the same feeling; the same vibrato. André Hazes was a singer of Dutch corny songs and in fact, Ibrahim did do the same in Cuba, although with a latin touch.

Gisteren weer eens de documentaire the Buena Vista Social Club gespeeld en daarin voornamelijk het stuk met de Cubaanse zanger Ibrahim Ferrer bekeken. In de film zingt hij een schitterend duo met Omara Portuondo in de studio, begeleid door o.a. Ry Cooder op de gitaar. Een stukje film dat me boeide. Ik kende de Buena Vista Social Club documentaire al van een kopie die ik ooit op VHS video gemaakt had van een uitzending op de tv, maar nu heb ik de DVD, die overal nu goedkoop te koop is. De documentaire is gemaakt door Wim Wenders, en laat een groep bejaarde Cubaanse muzikanten zien, liefkozend ter plekke bekend als de Super-Abuelos, wat zoiets als super-opa's betekent, die samen weer gaan optreden en op tournee gaan naar Amerika en Europa. Op de documentaire vinden we beelden van optredens in New York en Amsterdam ( Carré). Wat opvalt aan de documentaire is het plezier dat ze hebben en aan de wijze waarop ze genieten van al dat succes.. Ry Cooder, de Amerikaanse gitarist en componist, is de drijvende kracht achter dit alles - hij nam het initiatief voor deze concerten. Deze Buena Vista tournee's vonden plaats eind jaren negentig, en gezien de hoge leeftijd van de artiesten betekent dit dat verschillenden inmiddels overleden zijn. Ibrahim Ferrer overleed op 6 augustus 2005.

In 1953 begon hij zijn muzikale carriere in een groep onderleiding van Pacho Alonso uit Santiago (Cuba), die later omgedoopt werd tot Los Bocucos. Ze speelden in de lokale danszaaltjes Sons, Guaracha's en andere snelle Cubaanse nummers, hoewel Ibrahim veel liever Bolero's had gezongen, maar, zo vertelt hij, mijn stem was niet goed genoeg daarvoor. Pas in 1996 neemt hij met de Afro-Cuban All Stars een CD op getiteld A Todo Cuba le Gusta waar hij de Bolero's uit zijn jeugd zingt. Het wordt een succes. Het grote succes komt pas echt als Ry Cooder hem vraagt mee te doen met zijn Buena Vista Social Club project ( ik stond wat voor mezelf te zingen toen Ry Cooder me hoorde zingen en toen .............. , vertelt hij in de film.) De stem van Ibrahim doet me in de verte denken aan die van André Hazes; die trilling,die snik in zijn stem vind ik terug bij Ibrahim - natuurlijk niet zo vreemd want het repertoire, het levenslied, vertolkten ze allebei, al giet Ibrahim er uiteraard een Latijns-Amerikaans sausje overheen..

First of all a duet with Omera Portondo, not the one I mentioned above, but a duet of the song Quizas Quizas Quizas for a documentary about the life of Nat King Cole. The second fragment is from his last concert in Chicago where he presented his last album Rhythms Del Mundo.
