Tien jaar geleden, in maart 2000, werd de Franse groep Les Pommes de ma Douche geboren tijdens een gewoon tuinfeest bij wat goede vrienden. Op dat tuinfeest was het orkest van David Riviere uitgenodigd. Eén van de leden van dat orkest was gitarist Dominique Rouquier. Onder de gasten, die uitgenodigd waren, zaten Pierre Delaveau, Laurent Zeller en Laurent Delaveau, de vader van Dominque. Na een paar nummers besloten ze dat het tijd werd voor wat meer swingende Django-klanken. Er werd een groepje geformeerd, de instrumenten gepakt en samen met de eerdergenoemde personen werd er al snel flink gejamd ... C'est de suite un grand moment de joie mais surtout de spontanéité, d’intense émotion et de partage musical… ( = Het werd een uitbarsting van vreugde en spontaniteit, van een intense emotie in het samen muziek maken) herinneren de leden van de band zich tien jaar later. Na afloop werden er wat afspraken vastgelegd en zo ging de trein rollen. Niet lang daarna traden de leden van de groep op met grote namen uit de zigeunermuziek, zoals Tchavolo Schmitt en Bireli Lagrene. En dan nu, tien jaar later, verschijnt alweer hun vijfde album: Five Men Swinging.

Ik heb van dit orkest twee platen in mijn verzameling. In een eerdere blog schreef ik over hun derde album, getiteld Les Pommes de ma Douche - On n'est pas lá pour se faire engueuler, gewijd aan Johnny Hess, lid van het duo uit de jaren dertig Charles et Johnny. Johnny introduceerde het woord Zazou in het nummer Je Suis Swing, één van de nummers van de derde cd. Zazou werd een begrip en stond, m.n. in Parijs, synoniem voor een belangrijke maatschappelijke beweging gedurende de jaren veertig ten tijde van het pro-Duitse Vichy-regime.

De plaat Five Men Swinging is gewijd aan de Amerikaanse muziek, de USA ( = the United Swing of America) zoals Alain Raemackers het in zijn hoesinfo omschrijft. De muziek van Tin Pan Alley, met nummers zoals Night and Day en the Lady is a Tramp tot Hollywood en van Kansas City tot aan standards als Stompin' at the Savoy en Jimmy Giuffre's Four Brothers. De muziek is vooral plezierig om naar te luisteren en het swingt als een trein, in een traditie die ligt binnen de hot club swing en de muziek van Gus Viseur, met een repertoire dat bestaat uit jazz, zigeunermuziek, Franse chansons en musette.

Luister maar eens naar een fragment van zo'n typisch Django Reinhardt nummer, Stomping at Decca, dat door Les Pommes nog niet is uitgebracht op plaat.

De groep bestaat uit Dominique Rouquier op sologitaar, Pierre Delaveau op ritmegitaar, David Riviere accordeon, Laurent Zeller viool en Laurent Delaveau op bas. Pierre begon als accordeonist, maar speelt nu vooral ritmegitaar. Laurent ging bas spelen vanaf de oprichting van de band. Daaroor speelde hij een aantal jaren in rockbands ( het zij hem vergeven). Gitarist is Dominique Rouquier, die in zijn jeugd geboeid werd door de muziek van Django, maar als tiener een tijdelijk uitstapje maakte naar de muziek van Led Zeppelin. Hij verdient nu de kost als muziekleraar aan het Conservatorium van Blois. David Riviere brengt met zijn accordeon de musetteklanken van Gus Viseur weer tot leven in de band. Hij raakte geboeid door, natuurlijk, de muziek van Viseur, maar ook van accordeonisten als Jo Privat en Richard Galliano. En, last but not least, violist Laurent Zeller; hij speelde in de groepen van Raphaël Fays en Tchavolo Schmitt.

De lijst met titels van de plaat Five Men Swinging bevat een twaalftal nummers. Ik vind het moeilijk aan te geven welke ik het beste vind. De meeste nummers worden in uptempo gespeeld, zoals de foto van de band, al rennende langs de Seine ( met aan de overkant de Eiffeltoren), suggereert. Een paar mooie nummers zijn het swingende Americano en het uit 1947 stammende nummer van Jimmy Giuffre: Four Brothers. Walking with JB ( Wie is dat eigenlijk JB - Josephine Baker?) is een mooie jazzmusette, een compositie van accordeonist David Rivière. Alle nummers swingen als de spreekwoordelijke trein en Les Pommes de ma Douche doet de titel van de plaat alle eer aan: "Five Men Swinging"

Les Pommes de ma Douche vertroetelt de muzikale erfenis van de Franse zigeuners en musettebands, de muziek van Django en Gus Viseur. Geen naspelen van originelen, noch dat "oh-nee-alweer-die-Django-dreun" gevoel, maar frisse nieuwe muziek van een groep mannen die weten hoe dit soort muziek te spelen.

De Franse Oudestijl jazzscene is voor mij altijd al één van de meest interessante van Europa geweest. Wat te denken van groepen als de Hot Antic Jazz Band, Les Petit Jazzband de Mr. Morel of zijn nieuwste groep Les Rois du Foxtrot. En niet te vergeten de successen van groepen als Les Haricot Rouges, de Orpheon Celesta of Charquet et Co, alweer meer dan 30 jaar geleden? Ten years ago, March 2000, the French group Les Pommes de ma Douche played for the first time together at a garden party of some friends, where the David Riviere Orchestre was invited. One of the members of that orchestra was guitar player Dominique Rouquier. Guests, invited at the party were Pierre Delaveau, Laurent Zeller and Laurent Delaveau, Dominique's father and after a few tunes they decided to play some Django tunes. C'est de suite un grand moment de joie mais surtout de spontanéité, d’intense émotion et de partage musical… ( = It was an instant of great joy and spontanity, of intense emotion and sharing of music .....,) the members of Les Pommes remember at their website. They made some appointments before they left and so it all started. Soon the five men played with great names in gypsy jazz like Tchavolo Schmitt and Bireli Lagrene. Now, ten years later, the group released its fifth album, entitled Five Men Swinging.

It's their second album in my collection. In a precious blog I told about the third album entitled Les Pommes de ma douche - On n'est pas lá pour se faire engueuler, dedicated to Johnny Hess, member of the vocal duo Charles et Johnny in the 1930s. Johnny introduced the word Zazou in the tune Je Suis Swing, which is one of the tracks of their 3rd record. The Zazou became an important movement during the 1940s in Paris, a reaction against the pro-German Vichy regime in the country.

The album Five Men Swinging is dedicated to the American culture, the USA ( = the United Swing of America) as Alain Raemackers labels it in the liner notes. The music from Tin Pan Alley, with songs like Night and Day and the Lady is a Tramp to Hollywood and from Kansas City up to standards like Stompin' at the Savoy or Jimmy Giuffre's Four Brothers. The music is fun and it swings, in a tradition that can be best described as the Hot Club du France with the addition of Gus Viseur with a repertoire between jazz and musette, the gypsy and tzigane culture, French chansons and standards.
Love to share with you a fragment of a tunes, originally composed by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli and unreleased up to now by Les Pommes: Stomping At Decca.

The band features Dominique Rouquier on solo guitar, Pierre Delaveau on rhythm guitar, David Riviere accordion, Laurent Zeller violin and Laurent Delaveau on double bass. Father and son Pierre and Laurent Delaveau are the solid rhythmical base of the quintet.

Pierre started as an accordionist, but is now active as the rhythm guitarist - Laurent took up the double bass since 2000, after playing in several rock bands. The guitarist Dominique Rouquier was fascinated by the music of Django as a kid, but as a teenager he liked to play the music of Led Zeppelin. Now he's a guitar teacher at the Blois Conservatory of Music. David Riviere brings the musette sound of Gus Viseur into the ensemble. He is fascinated by the music of Gus Viseur, of course, and accordion players like Jo Privat and Richard Galliano. Last but not least is violin player Laurent Zeller, who played in the bands of Raphaël Fays and Tchavolo Schmitt.

The tracklist of the album Five Men Swinging contains a dozen tracks. It is hard to tell which ones belong to my favourites. Most of the tunes are in up-tempo, like the band running along the river Seine, with the Eifel Tower at the other sde of the river. Great tunes are the swinging Americano and the 1947 Jimmy Giuffre tune, he composed for Woody Herman: Four Brothers. Walking With JB. ( who's JB?) is a great jazz musette, a David Rivière composition. All tunes swing like hell and that's exactly what the men promise in the title "Five Men Swinging".

The Les Pommes De Ma Douche cherish the musical heritage of the French gypsy and musette bands, the music of Django, the music of men like Gus Viseur. Their music is not a copy, nor a clone, but music which sounds new and fresh and, above all, made by men who know how to swing. The French traditional jazz scene seems to be one of the most interested ones of Europe. What to think about bands like the Hot Antic Jazz Band, Les Petit Jazzband de Mr. Morel or his latest ensemble Les Rois du Foxtrot. And don't forget, decades ago, successes by bands like Charquet et Co and the Orpheon Celesta. Most of these bands loved to play the US jazz- and dance music from the 20s and 30s. Les Pommes De Ma Douche is a French group of musicians that plays in the so-called Manouche Jazz-style. When you read the liner notes of their third CD, On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler, they try to put that into another perspective, as it prefers to be labeled as a swing band. They explain how they disassociate on the so-called pompe manouche ( the typically hot club accent on the second and fourth note ) and renamed their band in Les Pommes De Ma Douche ( On their website they even translated this band name as The Apples Of My Showers ).

No more kidding about their name. The music they play on this album is really very entertaining and ..... swinging. The musicians on the CD are Dominique Rouquier on solo guitar, Pierre Delaveau on rhythm guitar, David Riviere on accordeon, Laurent Zeller on violin and Laurent Delaveau on bass.

I like the title tune On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler , which learn that the members sing too. Je Suis Swing is a traditional and with Roule Hot they proof they still can play in the manouche style.

The opening track is Tickle Toe , in fact a Count Basie - Lester Young composition. You can see and hear The Pommes ... perform it in the next film fragment below.

Ze willen liever als een swing band betiteld worden. Ze leggen uit hoe ze aan hun naam gekomen zijn, doordat ze de zgn. pompe manouche ( het kenmerkende accent op de tweede en vierde noot in de muziek van Django Reinhardt) met een woordspeling omvormden tot Les Pommes De Ma Douche. ( Op hun website vertalen ze hun naam weer in het Engels als The Apples Of My Showers - een beetje ver gezocht. ) Goed, geen grapjes meer over hun naam; de muziek die ze spelen is schitterend en .... het swingt. De musici op de CD zijn Dominique Rouquier op solo gitaar, Pierre Delaveau op slaggitaar, David Riviere op de accordeon, Laurent Zeller op viool en Laurent Delaveau aan de bas.

Ik vind het titelnummer On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler schitterend; het leert dat de mannen ook vocaal actief zijn op de plaat. Je Suis Swing is een traditional en met Roule Hot laten ze horen dat ze best nog met de manouche stijl overweg kunnen.
