Leo Slab (1920 - 2007)

Georg Lankester remembers, in this contribution, Léo Slab, violin player, who passed away some months ago.
Mid December 2007 I got the sad news that Léo Slab, his nom de jazz, aged 87 years old, passed away due to a sever heart attack in the hospital of Avignon (in the south of France). Léo Slab might be rather unknown for the young generation, but this man was one of the great names in the French Jazz scene, especially in the Hot Club de France style.
Léo Slab, his full name was Léo Slabiak, was born in 1920 in Poland. His parents moved to France when Léo was still an infant, where Leo started to play the violin. Although he played most classical music he became enchanted by jazz. He played with a lot of famous manouch guitar players en thanks to the organisators of the Hot Club de France, he founded, together with the talented young guitar player Jacques Montagne their Swing Quintette de Paris. They performed at the Parisian cabarets and became locally very famous. Jacques Montagne passed away two years later at a very young age: sixteen years old. After the war Léo Slab played for more then 10 years with Joseph Reinhardt. Django Reinhardt loved to have Léo Slab in his band too, as his regular violin player, Stephane Grappelli was in England at that time, but his brother Joseph didn't allow that. Léo Slab played with a lot of great musicians, like the Ferret brothers, Henri Crolla, Marcel Bianchi, Gus Viseur and of course, the before mentioned Joseph Reinhardt. He also played a few times with the great US tenor saxophone player Lester Young. At the end of his career, Léo moved to the south of France and played with young musicians. They founded a quintet, which made in 2000 a great CD, titled La Roulotte, featuring my friend guitar player Philippe Guignier. Due to a bad medical mistake, Léo couldn't use his left hand anymore and this was the end of his career.

I met this legendary musician in 2005 and could talk with him for two long days and he told me a lot of stories about the good old days. Léo was a amiable and sensitive person. I miss him and I cherish his notes and the CD with his last recordings.

Vandaag herinnert Georg Lankester in een gastbijdrage de onlangs overleden violist Léo Slab.
Midden december j.l. kreeg ik uit Frankrijk het droeve bericht door, dat deze musicus kort na een ernstige hartaanval in het ziekenhuis van Avignon was overleden. Léo is 87 jaar oud geworden. Misschien is deze violist niet zo bekend bij de huidige generatie, maar deze man behoort tot groten van de Franse jazzwereld, met name in het Hot Club de France-genre.
Léo Slab is geboren in 1920 en van origine een Poolse jood; zijn eigenlijke naam was Slabiak. Zijn ouders vestigden zich enkele jaren na zijn geboorte in Frankrijk, waar de jeugdige Léo zich in de muziek stortte. Hij ontpopte zich al vrij snel als een kundig violist. Hij speelde veel met beroemde manouch gitaristen en door toedoen van de Hot Club-organisatoren werd in 1940 het Swing Quintette de Paris van Léo Slab opgericht met daarin de wondergitarist Jacques Montagne. Twee jaar later overleed deze talentvolle jongen op 15 jarige leeftijd. Noodgewongen door dit overlijden en de toegenomen oorlogsperikelen moest Léo Slab dit veel-belovende kwintet ontbinden. De laatste jaren van de oorlog vocht hij in het oosten van Frankrijk in het verzet tegen de Duitsers.

Na de oorlog heeft Léo Slab over een periode van meer dan 10 jaar met Joseph Reinhardt gespeeld. Django Reinhardt wilde ook met deze violist optreden (Stephane Grappelli bevond zich, zoals bekend, in Engeland), maar dit heeft zijn broer altijd geweigerd. Léo Slab heeft, naast Joseph, met vele andere groten opgetreden, zoals de gebroeders Ferret, Henri Crolla, Marcel Bianchi en Gus Viseur. In de latere jaren heeft hij zelfs enige keren met Lester Young gespeeld. Aan het einde van zijn carriére, vestigde Léo zich in zuid-Frankrijk en ontmoette jonge musici. Besloten werd een tweede kwintet met Léo Slab op te richten. In 2000 maakte deze groep (met oa. mijn vriend gitarist Phlippe Guignier) nog een mooie cd, getiteld La Roulotte. Door een verkeerde medische ingreep kort nadien, kon hij zijn linkerhand niet meer gebruiken en moest dus zijn carriére beëindigen.v.l.n.r.: Léo Slab, Georg Lankester and Philippe Guignier (maart 2005). Ik heb deze oude musicus in 2005 bezocht en 2 dagen met hem over vroeger gesproken. Bij die gelegenheid heb ik veel over de vroegere, roemruchte Franse jazz-periode gehoord. Léo was een aimabel mens en een gevoelig artiest. Ik zal hem missen en koester zijn briefjes en de cd met zijn laatste opnamen.

Les Pommes De Ma Douche

Les Pommes De Ma Douche is a French group of musicians that plays in the so-called Manouche Jazz-style. When you read the liner notes of their third CD, On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler, they try to put that into another perspective, as it prefers to be labeled as a swing band. They explain how they disassociate on the so-called pompe manouche ( the typically hot club accent on the second and fourth note ) and renamed their band in Les Pommes De Ma Douche ( On their website they even translated this band name as The Apples Of My Showers ).

No more kidding about their name. The music they play on this album is really very entertaining and ..... swinging. The musicians on the CD are Dominique Rouquier on solo guitar, Pierre Delaveau on rhythm guitar, David Riviere on accordeon, Laurent Zeller on violin and Laurent Delaveau on bass.

I like the title tune On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler , which learn that the members sing too. Je Suis Swing is a traditional and with Roule Hot they proof they still can play in the manouche style.

The opening track is Tickle Toe , in fact a Count Basie - Lester Young composition. You can see and hear The Pommes ... perform it in the next film fragment below.
I hope to find their two previous CDs, Y va tomber des cordes ! and J'ai connu de vous... Monsieur Trenet.

Les Pommes De Ma Douche is een Franse groep musici, die, op het eerste gezicht in de manouche-jazz traditie spelen. Als je echter het verhaaltje op hun derde CD, On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler, leest, merk je dat ze daar eigenlijk wat afstand van willen nemen. Ze willen liever als een swing band betiteld worden. Ze leggen uit hoe ze aan hun naam gekomen zijn, doordat ze de zgn. pompe manouche ( het kenmerkende accent op de tweede en vierde noot in de muziek van Django Reinhardt) met een woordspeling omvormden tot Les Pommes De Ma Douche. ( Op hun website vertalen ze hun naam weer in het Engels als The Apples Of My Showers - een beetje ver gezocht. ) Goed, geen grapjes meer over hun naam; de muziek die ze spelen is schitterend en .... het swingt. De musici op de CD zijn Dominique Rouquier op solo gitaar, Pierre Delaveau op slaggitaar, David Riviere op de accordeon, Laurent Zeller op viool en Laurent Delaveau aan de bas.

Ik vind het titelnummer On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler schitterend; het leert dat de mannen ook vocaal actief zijn op de plaat. Je Suis Swing is een traditional en met Roule Hot laten ze horen dat ze best nog met de manouche stijl overweg kunnen.

Het openingsnummer Tickle Toe is in feite een Count Basie - Lester Young compositie, en je kunt in het filmfragment hieronder The Pommes ... het nummer uit zien voeren.

Ik hoop hun eerste twee CDs ook nog eens ergens te vinden: Y va tomber des cordes ! en J'ai connu de vous... Monsieur Trenet.
