George Wein en Marshall Brown hopscotched in het voorjaar van 1958 Europe conducting auditions on a back-breaking schedule ..... Ze beoordeelden honderden jazzmuzikanten van professionals tot amateurs en alles wat daar tussen zat ... Uiteindelijk werden zeventien jonge veelbelovende Europese jazzspelers geselecteerd voor wat de Toren van Babelband zou gaan heten, die in 1958 op het Newportfestival mocht optreden. Voor Nederland werd Ruud Jacobs uitgekozen. Fud Candrix - één van de belangrijkste jazzsaxofonisten uit de Belgische geschiedenis maakte naam voor de oorlog met zijn jazz - dansorkest om tijdens de mobilisatie de Belgische soldaten een hart onder de riem te steken .... Na de oorlog trad hij met en kleiner combo op, maar moest het afleggen tegenover de jonge generatie. Shirley Crabbe - Home

A great debut solo album ....
.... plunged back into the jazz scene!

September last year Shirley Crabbe released her debut album Home. Although she was awarded several times and sung at famous venues like Birdland, the Metropolitan Room and the Paramount Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York, performed in stage productions like Ain't Misbehavin' an Coming to the Mercy Seat, it's not just an album a dime a dozen - it is a new start. An operation on her vocal chords gave her a chance at a career as a singer, and with this album, Home, she's plunged back into the jazz scene ...... And what a re-start ... She was one of the five best vocalists in the 2010 Jazz mobile "Best of the Best" vocal companion ..... Home - what a great voice she has!
Her sister Deborah, who says in the liner notes with some proud that she is Shirley's first accompanist and her biggest fan, remembers their duets as kids in Barbara Streisand’s Hello Dolly and how they loved to sing together....... Shirley points to Ella Fitzgerald, whose version of A Tisket-A-Tasket fascinated her and made her decide to become a singer. She studied Voice at several Schools of Music, like the prestigious Manhattan School of Music and could be found, as a young student, singing at clubs downtown. This album Home is a great start for a new career in vocal jazz .......
The album contains nine tracks, most part of the Great American Songbook, like Gerswin's Summertime and Detour Ahead. I love the American Songbook. It's so hard to find things that everybody hasn't done already, but there are treasures out there if you look beyond the usual jazz sources. Don't expect the usual arrangements as sung by those hundred other vocalists that recorded these tunes - no, Matt Haviland and Shirley herself, both responsible for most arrangements, love to surprise its listeners......... Summertime is transformed into a rousing, wake-the-baby West African polyrhythmic celebration ......... I read somewhere.

She's accompanied by some versatile musicians, like trumpet player Brandon Lee, reed player Dave Glasser and trombonist Matt Haviland.
The rhythm section contains piano player Jim West, my brilliant pianist, as Shirley labels him, ( replaced by Donald Vega on some tracks), John Burr on double bass and Alvester Garnett on drums. Guest player is the well known veteran tenor player Houston Person, who can be heard on two tracks: Lucky To Be Me and Strong Man. Houston Person, active for more then 50 years in concert, accompanied vocalist Etta Jones since the 1970s and knows how to do that ........ Strong Man, one of the tunes that fascinated most, was originally sung by Abbey Lincoln October 1957 for her album That's Him, featuring great names like Kenny Dorham, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Max Roach. The album Home: a great debut album!

Last year Shirley Crabbe released her debut album as a solo jazz vocalist. The album contains nine tracks, which she arranged together with trombone player Mat Haviland. She's accompanied by some great versatile musicians, including the legendary tenor boss Houston Person as her special guest. An inspired album by a great singer - you'll realy like it. Last week we got the sad news that David Newman, known as David "Fathead" Newman , passed away on the age of 75. He was one of my favourite tenor saxophone player I heard in concert eleven years ago and love to commemorate him in this two-part blog. The first part is titled: David "Fathead" Newman (1933-2009): His Early Days in Music and the second: David "Fathead" Newman (1933-2009): The Last Decades Of His Career. The concert, eleven years ago, was with Houston Person as well, in a series of concert titled Boss Tenors accompanied by the Rein De Graaff Trio ( Rein De Graaff – Koos Serierse and Eric Ineke). I remember this concert, the first day of February 1998 at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, as a very inspiring one. As far as I know this tour was never recorded (although I do have some airshots from a concert of this group from the 5th of February 1998 at the Boerenhofstede in Laren ( centre of The Netherlands), but a previous tour (1990) with David Fathead Newman and Marchel Ivery and the same Dutch rhythm section was released on an album titled Blue Greens & Beans.

In fact Rein had invited James Clay to play besides Fathead Newman, but two weeks before the tour should start, he had to go to hospital for a surgery. Both James Clay as Fathead Newman had been students on the same high school in Dallas. Fathead Newman recorded some tracks with James Clay, who plays the tenor sax too, in a 1991 recording titled Cookin’ At The Continental. Also a young Roy Hargrove played some tracks (Sister Sadie and Moanin’) on this album. (Didn't Roy actually grew up in Dallas too?)

Roy loved to have Fathead Newman on his recordings. You can find David on the Vibe album (1992) and Family (1995) and much later on his 2005 funky styled RH Factor album Distractions. David Fathead Newman also played the flute and that’s not one of my favourite instruments; I like him playing the saxophone. The 1994 album Mr. Gentle Mr. Cool is a tribute to Duke Ellington which surprises because of the use of a bass (Peter Washington) and a piccolo bass ( played by Ron Carter).

In the mid 1990s Fathead Newman was one of the members to play in the movie soundtrack of Kansas City and I love to share with you a fragment of the tune Indiana as played in a "jam session" with the Hey Hey Club All-Stars (or Kansas City Band) featuring Fathead Newman on the alto sax, Geri Allen on piano, Christian McBride on bass and Victor Lewis on drums: Indiana.

Hank Crawford (1934-2009)

In the first part of this contribution, posted in David "Fathead" Newman (1933-2009): His Early Days In Music, I talked about his cooperation with Hank Crawford. Yesterday I learned, that Bennie Ross Crawford, Jr., Hank for friends, passed away last Thursday (29th of January 2009), aged 75 years too, a few days after his close friend and colleague Fathead Newman.

Afgelopen week overleed saxofonist en fluitist David Newman, beter bekend als David Fathead Newman, op 75 jarige leeftijd. Hij was één van mijn favoriete saxofonisten, die ik elf jaar geleden voor het eerst zag spelen tijdens een tournee met het Rein De Graaff Trio. In twee blogs wil ik iets over zijn leven en muziek vertellen. Het eerste deel, onder andere over zijn jaren bij Ray Charles heet: David “Fathead” Newman (1933-2009): Zijn vroegste jaren.
En het tweede deel vind je hieronder, getiteld: David “Fathead” Newman (1933-2009): De laatste twintig jaren.

James Clay - Cookin'at the Continental (Antilles 314-510 724 (1992)
Het concert dat ik van Fathead Newman bijwoonde was samen met Houston Person tijdens één van die fantastische tournees van het Rein De Graaff Trio ( Rein De Graaff – Koos Serierse en Eric Ineke). Ik herinner het concert van 1 februari 1998, nu elf jaar geleden in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen, als een erg geïnspireerd optreden door een groep ervaren professionals. Ik ken van deze bezetting alleen een aantal opnamen van 5 februari 1998, die vastgelegd werden door het TROS programma Sesjun in Laren. Een tournee met dezelfde ritmesectie vond plaats in mei 1990 met David Fathead Newman en Marchel Ivery. Deze opnamen vind je terug op de plaat Blue Greens & Beans.

Eigenlijk had Rein de Graaff in 1990 James Clay uitgenodigd om naast Fathead op het podium te staan, maar twee weken voor de serie concerten begon werd James opgenomen in het ziekenhuis; Rein vond in Marchel Ivery een goede vervanger. Zowel James Clay als Fathead Newman bezochten dezelfde High School in Dallas. Fathead Newman speelde ook mee op een aantal nummers van James Clay's plaat Cookin’ At The Continental uit 1991, waarin ook een toen nog jonge Roy Hargrove te beluisteren viel. ( ... en komt die ook niet uit Dallas?).

Kansas City Band - KC After Dark (More music from Robert Altman's Kansas City) (Verve 537322) (1997)

Het klikte blijkbaar tussen Roy en Fathead Newman, want we vinden hen beiden terug op Roy’s albums The Vibe ( uit 1992) en Family (uit 1995) en, nog maar een paar jaar geleden, op Roy’s funky uitstapje naar de “populaire jazz “ met zijn RH Factor album Distractions (2005). David Fathead Newman speelt ook fluit, maar dat is niet mijn favoriete instrument – ik hoor hem liever op de saxofoon. Op de plaat Mr. Gentle Mr. Cool, een eerbetoon aan de muziek van Duke Ellington, verrast hij met twee bassisten, namelijk Peter Washington en ( op piccolo bas), Ron Carter.

Midden jaren negentig speelde hij mee in de zgn. Hey Hey Club All-Stars, ook wel Kansas City Band genaamd in de film Kansas City, geproduceerd door Robert Altmans, en ik vind het leuk om hiervan een fragment te laten zien, Indiana zoals we dat in de documentaire Jazz ’34 vinden met Geri Allen op de piano, Ron Carter op bas en Victor Lewis op slagwerk: Indiana

Tenslotte nog een klein eerbetoon aan deze steeds “gewoon gebleven’ saxofonist David Fathead Newman met een filmfragment, gemaakt in 2005 voor de documentaire The Cole Nobody Knows (over Freddy Cole), waarin we Fathead volgen bij de opnamen voor het nummer This Love of Mine.

Hank Crawford (1934-2009)

In het eerste deel van deze herinnering aan Fathead Newman, getiteld David "Fathead" Newman (1933-2009): Zijn Vroegste Jaren, noemde ik zijn samenwerking met Hank Crawford. Ik vernam dat Bennie Ross Crawford, Jr., Hank voor vrienden, op donderdag 29 januari 2009 overleden is op de leeftijd van 75 jaar, een paar dagen na zijn vriend en collega Fathead Newman.

Boss Tenors

Ten years ago, the 5th of February 1998, the Rein De Graaff Trio gave a concert with David "Fathead" Newman and Houson Person at the Nick Vollebregts Jazz Café in Laren ( in the center of The Netherlands) for the jazz program Sesjun, released by TROS TV and Radio. Three tunes were showed in a TV program; at the radio some more.

Some days earlier, on the 1st of February 1998, these two great American tenor players performed with the Rein De Graaff Trio, featuring Rein De Graaff on piano, Koos Serierse on bass and Eric Ineke on drums, at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands in a program, labeled as The Boss Tenors. Rein De Graaff and his Trio doesn't need any introduction, I guess. He is the leading accompanist for US bebop musicians for the last fifty years; some almost forgotten, to play in The Netherlands. He is a regular guest in Porgy en Bess and performed with musicians like Herb Geller, James Spaulding,, Gary Smulyan and of course, the memorable concert with Frank Morgan last year. Although I can't remember in detail what tunes they played, but according to the Laren concert they played tunes like Sweet Sucker, Let's Stay Together and Can't Help Lovin' That Man. The radio and TV performance was the end of a succesfull tour among Dutch venues and I remember these two men as two great strong soloists. Houston Person, born in 1934, is still active in music, and I like him for his groovy recordings on tenor sax, most with a Hammond B-3 organ into the rhythm section. David Fathead Newman, born in 1933, still active too, I remember him for his role in the great Robert Altman film Kansas City and the documentary, with the music files of that film, Kansas City Jazz '34 Here you can see a trailer of that documentary too.

I found a fragment, although a bit vague, where you can hear David Fathead Newman in a fragment from the Kansas City '34 documentary, where he plays in a jam session the part of Buster Smith, the master of Charlie Parker, but, for me, he just plays .... himself.

Tien jaar geleden, op 5 februari 1998, gaf het Rein De Graaff Trio een concert met David "Fathead" Newman en Houson Person in het Nick Vollebregt's Jazz Café in Laren voor het TROS jazzprogramma Sesjun. In het TV programma werden drie nummers gespeeld; voor de radio wat meer.

Een paar dagen daarvoor, op 1 februari 1998, traden deze twee Amerikaanse tenorsaxspelers, onder de titel Boss Tenors, op met datzelfde Rein De Graaff Trio ( Rein De Graaff piano, Koos Serierse bas en Eric Ineke slagwerk) in de Porgy en Bess Jazzclub in Terneuzen. Rein De Graaff en zijn trio behoren eigenlijk geen introductie meer; hij is voor veel Amerikaanse bebopmuzikanten de beste begeleider van de afgelopen vijftig jaar; muzikanten, die soms bijna vergeten zijn, haalt hij uit Amerika om hier op te treden. In Porgy en Bess is hij een regelmatige gast en ik heb hem o.a. gezien met muzikanten als Herb Geller, James Spaulding, Gary Smulyan en natuurlijk, het gedenkwaardige concert met Frank Morgan afgelopen jaar.Houston Person ( foto Hans Koert)
Hoewel ik me het concert uiteraard niet meer in detail kan herinneren, vermoed ik, dat ze dezelfde nummers gespeeld zullen hebben als in Laren, zoals: Sweet Sucker, Let's Stay Together en Can't Help Lovin' That Man. De radio- en TV uitzending was het slot van een succesvolle korte tournee langs de Nederlandse podia en ik herinner me dat ze beide ervaren en krachtige tenorspelers waren, die indruk maakten. Houston Person, geboren in 1934, is nog steeds actief in de muziek en ik houd vooral van zijn groovy klank op de tenorsax, het liefst begeleid door een ritmesectie met zo'n vette Hammond B3 op de achtergrond. David Fathead Newman, geboren een jaar eerder, in 1933, is ook nog steeds actief en als ik aan hem denk, hoor en zie ik hem weer spelen in die geweldige, onderschatte film van Robert Altman Kansas City en de daaruit afgeleide documentaire Kansas City Jazz '34 . Je vindt hier ook een gefilmd fragment van deze documentaire.

Ik vond een fragment, hoewel niet van de beste kwaliteit, waarin je David Fathead Newman kunt zien in een fragment uit de Kansas City '34 documentaire, waarin hij tijdens een jamsessie in 1934 de rol van Buster Smith speelt, de leermeester van Charlie Parker, maar, uiteraard, vooral ..... zichzelf.
