Monty Alexander - Facets

Since June 2006 a secondhand record shop happens to be opened at the Dam in Middelburg (The Netherlands).
Last months I found some interesting LPs from Monty Alexander. One of these records I want to share with you today.
For three months Monty Alexander was for me just one of the dozen best jazz piano players, but since his concert in the Porgy & Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( southwest part of the Netherlands) Monty has become one of my favorites. So I was very anuious to find some LPs of him.
The LP is titled Facets and was released at the Concord Jazz label ( CJ-108). It is Monty's second album for Concord - his first one happened to be with the Ray Brown Trio on CJ-102.
There are eight tracks on this LP. Lost April is, as the liner notes say, an almost forgotten tune played by Nat King Cole in 1948. Monty's version is on this album. Hold 'Em Joe is in fact a calypso, played here in a way only Monty can do it. When he touches the keys even a dull melody becomes a great jazz standard. He modulates the tunes and adapts the rhythm if he feels it necessary. A good example is Fats Domino's I'm Walkin'
The Facets album is recorded at the Coast Recorders Studios in San Francisco August 1979 with the Monty Alexander Trio. This trio features Monty at the piano, Ray Brown on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums.
Jeff Hamilton was also the percusionist at the Porgy & Bess Concert november 2006.
His cooperation with Ray Brown dates from the late 1960s. Monty, born in Jamaica in 1944, came to Miami in 1961 and started as a piano player in local clubs. In 1967 he moved to New York and played with Milt Jackson and Ray Brown for five s
ummer seasons. He formed his own trio and toured around Europe mid 1970s, where he performed, thirty years ago, at his famous Montreux concert with Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton ( Monty Alexander Live ). This trio played, thirty years older, in November in the Porgy & Bess Jazz Club.
It's a pity that the copy of my Facets LP is a bit noisy, so I hope to find a better copy or the CD version. Is this great album reissued on CD?

Sinds een half jaar is er een tweedehands platenzaakje geopend aan de Dam in Middelburg. Afgelopen maand vond ik er een paar interessante LPs, waaronder Monty Alexander. Eén van die LPs wil ik jullie hier laten zien.
Tot voor drie maanden was Monty Alexander voor mij niet meer dan één van de tien betere jazz pianisten, maar sinds zijn concert in de Porgy & Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen is Monty één van mijn favoriete pianisten geworden. Dus was ik blij verrast om een paar van zijn LPs in de bakken te vinden.
De LP is getiteld Facets en uitgebracht op het Concord Jazz label ( CJ-108). Het is het tweede album dat Monty voor Concord maakte; het eerste was met het Ray Brown Trio op CJ-102.
Er staan acht titels op deze LP. Lost April is, zoals de hoes aangeeft, een bijna vergeten nummer van Nat King Cole uit 1948; Monty's versie staat als tweede nummer op deze plaat. Hold 'Em Joe is eigenlijk een calypso, hier gespeeld zoals alleen Monty dat kan. Als hij een nummer met zijn vingers aanraakt, verandert elke suf melodietje in een virtuoos gespeelde jazz standard. Hij past de melodie aan, speelt met de toonhoogten en verandert het ritme zoals het hem goeddunkt. Het nummer I'm Walkin', origineel gezongen door Fats Domino is daar zo'n voorbeeld van
De Facets LP werd opgenomen in de Coast Recorders Studios in San Francisco in august 1979 met het Monty Alexander Trio. Het trio bestaat uit Monty Alexander op de piano, Ray Brown op bas en Jeff Hamilton op slagwerk. Jeff Hamilton speelde ook mee tijdens het Porgy & Bess Concert in november 2006.
De samenwerking met Ray Brown dateert al van eind zestiger jaren. Monty, geboren in Jamaica in 1944, kwam in 1961 naar Miami en begon piano te spelen in de lokale clubs. In 1967 verhuisde hij naar New York waar hij vijf zomerseizoenen optrad met Ray Brown en Milt Jackson. Hij vormde zijn eigen groep en reisde midden jaren zeventig door Europa, wat resulteerde in het beroemde Montreux concert met Jeff Hamilton en John Clayton ( Monty Alexander Live ). Met dit trio speelde hij, hoewel dertig jaar ouder, in Porgy & Bess.
Jammergenoeg is de kwaliteit van de LP die ik gekocht heb, wat minder en ik hoop ooit nog eens een beter exemplaar te vinden of een heruitgave op CD. Is deze plaat ooit op CD heruitgebracht?
