Sweet Hollywaiians - Hula Girl

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
It is good to know that there are still bands that love to keep the sounds of the first half of the XXth century alive. One of those bands is the Sweet Hollywaiians, a group of dedicated young Japanese musicians, that plays the 1920's and 1930's Hawaiian, Swing, Ragtime, Italian and Calypso style music. This Japanese group from Osaka released two albums within a short period: Hula Girl by the Sweet Hollywaiians, released by Sweet Strings ( ss-1007) and 'O Surdato 'Nnammurato by Tom Marion and his Sweet Hollywaiians - released by Radio Days Records. ( RDR-101 ). Today time for their last one: Hula Girl.
This group features Tomotaka Matsui, who sings ( like all members do ) and plays the Hawaiian Steel Guitar, guitar and mandolin - Nobumasa Takada, who plays all kinds of string instruments from ukulele up to the tenor banjo - Takashi Nakayama on guitar and ukulele and finally Kohichi Tsutsumishita, who's on the string bass. All four members sing on traditionals like Milenberg Joys, Hawaiian oldies like Hula Girl ( made famous by Andrew Aiona and Sol Hoopii ) and the Andrew Sisters hit Rum and Coca Cola, originally titled L' Annee Passee, a Lionel Belasco composition from the early 1900s. The steel guitar, played by Tomotaka was very popular around 1930 and played by legendary players like Sol Hoopii and Roy Smeck. The first Hawaiian groups came to the States around 1900 and toured around with vaudeville shows, like the Hawaiian Trio with Hula-dancer Toots Paka. These kinds of groups also visited Europe. The audience was fascinated by the typically sound of the steel guitar.

In the 1930s Hawaii became a popular place to make films, like Bird of Paradise. Hawaiian music, Americanized and adopted by the jazz and popular music became very popular all over the world up to the 1950s. Nowadays, musicians like Bob Brozman, Robert Crumb and Les Primitifs du Futur , to name some, keep this early roots music alive. It is good to learn, that bands, even from the other side of the globe, like the Sweet Hollywaiians, bring this great music with so much passion.
It's a joy to listen to this CD. I'm glad I can share with you a video fragment where you can listen to the song Milenberg Joys as played by the Sweet Hollywaiians.

In a previous contribution about the Sweet Hollywaiians I used the same promo film, but also a fragment of the legendary Roy Smeck playing a medley of tunes.

Information about the Sweet Hollywaiians is to be found ( in Japanese) at their website or in English at http://www.myspace.com/sweethollywaiians . If you want information how to order this record contact Sweet Strings ( sweetstrings@nifty.com ).

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
( RDR-101 ).
