Roda de Choro: Muziek in een kringetje.

Een week geleden wees Joergen, samensteller van de wekelijkse Choro Music blog zijn lezers op de typische kringopstelling van Choro-muzikanten: de Roda de Choro. Omdat ik zelf de Choro-band Choro Brasil Scandinavia graag nog eens wilde laten zien, waarmee in Kopenhagen in de zomer van 2005 alles begon, kon ik zo twee vliegen in één klap slaan. En bovendien ..... het stukje van Joergen was te interessant om onvertaald te blijven: Roda de Choro: Muziek in een kringetje.

Eén van de meest karakteristieke elementen van de traditionele Choro-muziek is het feit dat de opstelling van de muzikanten tijdens optredens plaats vindt in een kring of rond een tafel, waardoor er een intieme sfeer ontstaat, zodat oogcontact tijdens het spel mogelijk is. Dit was de ideale opstelling bij een zgn. Roda de Choro en dat is nog steeds zo in kleine clubs of bij mensen thuis, als choro-muzikanten voor hun plezier komen spelen. Je zou kunnen stellen dat deze kringopstelling prima past bij dit soort kleinschalige muziek, waarbij concentratie, een uitstekende speeltechniek en een gemeenschappelijk gevoel, belangrijke elementen zijn onmisbaar om de echte Choromuziek te doorgronden.

Toch zie je tegenwoordig steeds vaker dat Choro gespeeld wordt op een podium in een zgn. concertopstelling, waarbij de musici naast elkaar zitten tegenover het publiek. In zo'n omgeving is het spelen in een kring praktisch onmogelijk, omdat iedereen met zijn gezicht richting het publiek zit. Natuurlijk zijn er ook voordelen aan die opstelling, omdat individuele solisten zich zo beter aan het publiek kunnen presenteren.
De Wereld Is Een Schouwtoneel ..... memoreerde Vondel al, of was het vader Cats, hoe dan ook, jonge musici die Choro-muziek spelen kennen al bijna niets anders meer en zijn gewend aan de opstelling waarbij ze oog in oog met het publiek staan en het hangt er dan ook maar vanaf in hoeverre de solist in staat is zijn publiek te boeien, met de band achter hem, als begeleider. De rol van de solist wordt zo, als vanzelf, de belangrijkste act op het podium. Is het niet opmerkelijk dat juist deze individuele waarden zo belangrijk lijken in de Westerse Wereld, dat het overgeslagen is naar de musici, die, zo lijkt het, alleen nog maar dromen van een individuele carriere in de muziek? Het lijkt alsof het succes van een band op het toneel afgemeten wordt aan het succes van de hoofdsolist. Zijn reputatie of het feit of hij een ster is of niet, of hij in staat is tijdens zijn solo's het publiek te verrassen met zijn spel; met speciale effecten of onverwachte improvisaties, worden allemaal factoren die van even groot belang zijn voor de muzikant om een "ster" te worden.

De traditionele Choro-muziek, gespeeld in een kring, tijdens een Roda de Choro, is wat mij betreft de enige pure vorm om de spirit van de Choro te beleven.

Deze bijdrage geeft mij de kans om twee fragmenten te plaatsen van de groep Choro Brasil Scandinavia, een band die bestaat uit musici afkomstig van beide continenten: Marcilio Lopes op de bandolim, Jayme Vignoli op cavaquinho en Oscar Balao op pandeiro. Deze drie komen uit Brazilië. Mats Andersson (uit Zweden) speelt gitaar en Martin Heap (uit Denemarken) de 7-snarige gitaar. Ze spelen twee nummers, terwijl ze in een kring zitten: Roda de Choro: Noites Cariocas en Um a Zero; composities van respectievelijk Jacob do Bandolim en Pixinquinha. Prachtig !!

SONNY ROLLINS: 78 JAAR
Vandaag, 7 september 2008, hoopt Sonny Rollins zijn 78-ste verjaardag te vieren. Hij is nog steeds actief en velen zullen zich nog wel de "hype" rond zijn jubileumconcert vorig jaar november in Carnegie Hall, New York vanwege de vijftigste verjaardag van zijn eerste concert daar, herinneren. Ik mocht toen zelfs foto's en een verslag plaatsen van Michael Gilbreath, die met zijn kleindochters de receptie voorafgaand aan het concert bezocht. Je vindt ze in de bijdrage: Sonny Rollins in Carnegie Hall. Het concert resulteerde uitendelijk niet in een CD ( Rollins was niet tevreden met het resultaat). Binnenkort verschijnt er echter wel een plaat en DVD met daarop zeven live-opnamen uit de periode 1980 tot 2007 (één track komt uit de Carnegie Hall jubileumshow) en deze Road Shows: Volume 1 wordt nu al als one of the finest Sonny Rollins albums ever released ( = één van de beste Sonny Rollins albums ooit uitgebracht) aangekondigd. Ik hoop het na verschijnen hier te kunnen bespreken. Tot die tijd zullen we het moeten doen met het gegeven dat de aangekondigde plaat captures the kind of excitement that only Sonny Rollins can create in a live performance. (= een gevoel van opwinding veroorzaakt, die alleen Sonny Rollins kan opwekken tijdens een live optreden). Ik voel die opwinding nu nog niet, daarvoor zijn Zeeuwen iets te nuchter, denk ik .... eerst mè is luustere..... Als je Sonny Rollins persoonlijk wilt feliciteren hoef je vanmiddag niet in de rij te gaan staan om een handje te schudden: Zet je felicitatie gewoon online in zijn gastenboek.

SONNY ROLLINS: 78 YEARS

Today, the 7th of September, Sonny Rollins, hopes to celebrate his 78th birthday. He was born in New York City on the 7th of September 1930. He is still an active man and most of you will remember the "hype" around the concert November last year in Carnegie Hall, New York City to memorate that it was 50 years ago that he first played in that famous venue. I could even give you an almost eyewitness report thanks to Michael Gilbreath, who shared photos and stories about the reception he visited with his grandchildren before te show itself. You could read it at: Sonny Rollins at Carnegie Hall. It was a pity that the promised album of the show was cancelled. Never mind that: a new album and DVD wil be released soon: Road Shows volume 1 with seven unreleased live recordings from the years 1980 up to 2007 ( also one track from the 2007 Carnegie Hall Concert). It is promoted as one of the finest Sonny Rollins albums ever released. Well I hope to be able to review it in this blog later .......... it captures the kind of excitement that only Sonny Rollins can create in a live performance. If you love to congratulate Sonny personally today you won't have to travel to the States, but you can give your congratulations online in his guestbook.

One of the characteristics of the traditional choro performance is the fact that the participating musicians usually are seated in a circle or around a table to create an intimate atmosphere and leaving the opportunity to watch each other while playing. This is the ideal setting for a Roda de Choro, and this is continued to this day in small clubs or at private gatherings whenever Choro musicans get together to play for their own pleasure. Some times ago, Jo, editor of the Choro Music blog pointed us to the typically way Choro music use to play their music while sitting in a circle at a Roda de Choro. In the mean time I loved to share with you two fragment of the Choro Brasil Scandinavia band - the band who introduced me to the Choro music in Copenhagen in the summer of 2005: so I kill two birds with one stone !!

The world is a stage according to Mr. Shakespeare and especially a younger generation of musicians has understood this dictum as a demand of acting as an individual soloist when the music plays, the success of a performance depending on the abilities of the individual fronting the audience and supported by a band in the background. The soloist's role has become the most important part of the act on stage. This is truly a phenomenon reflecting the ideological and social values of modern Western society, expected to be the norm by audiences and accepted as such by musicians, who go for a successfull career in music business. In fact, the success of a modern jazz or rock 'n' roll concert seems to depend on the soloists' personal abilities, the reputation and stardom often applied to the musician's ability to invent and create surprising personal solos by mastering the instrument with special effects and unexpected improvisation skills. This is the constant demand resting on the career of individual musicians heading for a star role on-stage today.

The traditional Choro music, as played in a circle, still is the most pure form to enjoy the spirit of Choro. (Jo )

Finally I love to share with you two fragments from the band Choro Brasil Scandinavia, a group of musicians from both continents featuring Marcilio Lopes on bandolim, Jayme Vignoli on the cavaquinho and Oscar Balao on the pandeiro. These three men are from Brasil. Mats Andersson (from Sweden) plays the guitar and Martin Heap (from Denmark) the 7-string guitar. They play two tunes, while sitting in a circle, like a Roda de Choro: Noites Cariocas and Um a Zero, a Jacob do Bandolim and a Pixinquinha composition. Enjoy !!

2008 ANNUAL MEETING of the IAJRC.

At this moment the 2008 Annual Meeting by the members of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors is scedulded in Louisvile, Kentucky (USA). This internationally group of jazz record collectors gathers in the Holiday Inn Hurstbourne for four days ( 4th up to the 6th of September) to discuss music, to listen to presentations and live performances and to strengthen the ties with other collectors world wide. I have visited two conventions ( Hamburg 1999 and Copenhagen 2005) and on the latter we could introduce our El Redescubrimiento de Oscar Aleman project in a presentation at the Palace Hotel, in which we introduced the listeners to the special relation between Oscar Aleman and Copenhagen.

DE JAARLIJKSE IAJRC CONVENTIE

Op dit moment vindt de Jaarlijkse Conventie (2008) plaats van de International Association of Jazz Record Collectors in Louisvile, Kentucky (VS). Deze internationale groep van jazzplatenverzamelaars ( drie maal de woordwaarde) is vier dagen bij elkaar in het Holiday Inn Hurstbourne om naar muziek te luisteren, naar presentaties, gramofoonplaten te bediscussiëren en banden met andere verzamelaars aan te halen. Zelf heb ik twee conventies bezocht ( Hamburg 1999 en Kopenhagen 2005) en heb dit als heel waardevol ervaren. Op de laatstgenoemde conventie mochten we ons El Redescubrimiento de Oscar Aleman project (= De herontdekking van Oscar Aleman) introduceren tijdens een presentatie in het Palace Hotel en de speciale relatie van Oscar Aleman met Copenhagen belichten.

Op 6 september 1958, nu vijftig jaar geleden, vond een schitterende concert plaats in de Spotlite Club in Washington waarin het Ahmad Jamal Trio, bestaande uit Ahmad Jamal achter de piano - Israel Crosby op bas en Vernel Fournier op slagwerk, voor het voetlicht trad. Dit concert werd vastgelegd op de plaat Ahmed's Blues. Een plaat om naar uit te kijken.

The Meelboot

A week ago I was invited as a guest at the regional radio station Omroep Zeeland, southwest part of The Netherlands, to promote my Keep swinging web log. The program, in which my item was sceduled is labeled De Meelboot ( = The Mail boat ). The program is. in fact, a hodge podge of subjects, like about a new treatment for breast cancer up about some kids from a small remote village in the Zak van Zuid Beveland who wrote a book about Geheimen ( secrets ), due to the annual Kinderboekenweek (= Week of the Children's Book ). My subject, my 600th Keep swinging web log was sceduled between these diverge subjects. I had brought myself an openings tune, the Honolulu Stomp from the Sweet Hollywaiians , a young Japanese string band.

One of the items of the program is the Top Drie ( = Top Three), and I was asked to bring my three best tunes !! Oh no, what to do? What three tunes should I bring to the studio? Something from Roy Hargrove, Oscar Aleman, Thelonious Monk; some great hard bop music from Art Blakey or Lee Morgan? Or Hank Mobley or Sonny Stitt - no it should be something old, like The Goofus Five, or something recreated from old recordings, like the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra does or something funny like the Animal Crackers.Or some swing, from Svend Asmussen or the smooth trumpet of Bert Joris?
I made my choice - I took three tunes, made by young people, who play their music in the rich tradition of jazzmusic, as played in the past, with their own contribution. This is my Top Three:

Een week geleden was ik uitgenodigd om iets te komen vertellen voor de regionale radiozender Omroep Zeeland over mijn Keep swinging weblog. Het programma, waarin dit gepland stond, heet De Meelboot en wordt gepresenteerd door Elsa en Bert. Het programma is eigenlijk een mengelmoesje van allerlei uiteenlopende onderwerpen; over een nieuwe behandelwijze voor borstkankerpatienten tot een kinderboek over Geheimen geschreven door twee jongens uit een klein dorpje in de Zak van Zuid Beveland in het kader van de Kinderboekenweek. Mijn onderwerp, mijn 600ste dagelijkse weblog zat daar midden in. Ik had een openingsnummer mee mogen brengen en dat waren de Sweet Hollywaiians geworden, en groep enthousiaste jonge Japanners, met het nummer Honolulu Stomp.

Eén van de vaste items van het programma is de TOP DRIE. Ook aan mij werd gevraagd zo'n TOP DRIE samen ter stellen en dus ben ik in mijn verzameling gedoken. Maar, oh jee - da's nog nie zo makkuluk !! Wat moet je kiezen? Iets van Roy Hargrove, Oscar Aleman, Thelonious Monk, of een paar fanatieke hardboppers zoals Art Blakey of Lee Morgan. Of toch Hank Mobley of Sonny Stitt - nee- het moest iets "ouds" zijn, zoiets als de Goofus Five of een nummer in de traditie van die Roaring Twenties, zoals de herscheppingen van The Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra. Of iets grappigs, zoals de Animal Crackers? Of Swing van Svend Asmussen of wat jive van Joep Peeters. Of de breekbare klanken van Bert Joris' trompet? Ik heb uiteindelijk een keus gemaakt - een doordachte keus. Het moest iets zijn met jonge mensen, die hun muziek spelen in de traditie van het rijke jazzverleden, gebruikmakend van hun eigen inbreng. Dit is mijn TOP DRIE geworden:
