Bentje Braam

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Michiel Braam and his Bik Bent Braam is one of those Dutch groups I love to hear in concert once.

Michiel Braam is a composer and band leader of a big band, called Bik Bent Braam. He said once that he hates the sound of big band music. A strange judgement it seems, but he means that the orchestras now a days all sound the same and their music is very predictable. If you listen to the double CD of BV Haast ( CD 9810/11 ) you might understand what Michiel means - it sounds fresh, energetic and unpredictable.

This 2CD set contains two live performances. The first one is titled Playing The Second Coolbook and was recorded at a live performance in the Villa VPRO in Hilversum ( The Netherlands) in December 1997. This recording was made during the presentation of the VPRO/Boy Edgar Award 1996-1997. The music on this part of the 2CD refers to Lennie Tristano and his Bik Bent Braam was reduced to a quintet, called Bentje Braam.
The liner notes refer to a concert of this group as a superbly-at-ease quintet, featuring a truly delightful saxophone pairing, through riveting musical twists and turns. Compositions, ranging from furious Bebop and exiting free jazz anarchy to swing and genuinely moving ballads. I guess this is the best way to describe his music.

The second CD is made during a live concert at the Jazzmarathon of Groningen (The Netherlands) in 1990 with his trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher ( one word) and contains, as the title suggests, Monk Materials. He plays Monk compositions in a way only Braam can do - no pure copying of Monk-ish notes, but transformed into new, not less capricious noteprogressions.

The music of Michiel Braam is worth to discover !!

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
