The music at Shawn Maxwell latest album is inspired by the tonal palette of composers like Philip Glass. Shawn Maxwell, composer, arranger and a gifted flute and reed player wants to get noticed and that’s why he intended to break out of the traditional quartet or quintet forms …. “There are so many great saxophonists in Chicago …. And we’re all doing the same sort of projects.  It’s frustrating that we got buried in the pack.” He composed eighteen, what he called, sketches, short compositions … which don’t swing like you would expect, but uses the streamline pulse of the avant-garde as was labeled  Exotica during the 1950s. You can hear the influences of the music of Philip Glass or Frank Zappa  ….. KEEP (it) SWINGING loves to point you to John Brown’s latest album Quiet Time, released last week ….. In 2012 he impressed with his big band, which accompanied Nnenna Freelon at her album Christmas. His quintet features veteran trumpet player Ray Codrington, who debuted early 1960s in the J.F.K. Quintet and Eddie Harris groups; saxophonist Brian Miller, Gabe Evens piano and Adonis Rose on drums. John V. Brown, bass player and leader of the band selected ten brand new originals and less known jazz masterpieces, like Elvin Jones’ A Lullaby of Itsugo Village or Gerald Wilson’s first movement Romance of the 1997 Theme for Monterey. A great album you shouldn’t miss if you like to hear a band, “solidly swinging and full of deep feeling from start to finish”. KEEP (it) SWINGING loves to point you to Lauren Kinhan's latest album: Circle in a Square. A month ago New York Voices’ Lauren Kinhan released her third album .. "a Jazz Journey balancing personal tales and universal themes". While studying at the Berklee College of Music she started composing  and thought about combining her two passions …… singing and composing. At her latest album Circle in a Square, with special guests like Randy Brecker, she surprises with a dozen songs, all her  own compositions … She is accompanied by a quartet that features veteran bass player Will Lee ( who accompanied in  hundreds of recording sessions since the 1970s with great names like Sonny Stitt, the Brecker Brothers and George Benson) and David Finck, who played in the bands of Woody Herman and Paquito d’Rivera; piano player Andy Ezrin  and drummer Ben Wittman, whose credits include Don Byron and Paul Simon. Ray Ventura: Eén van de belangrijkste Europese bandleiders van de vorige eeuw.  Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog vierde hij triomfen in Zuid-Amerika en toen de oorlog afgelopen was stortte hij zich op de film .... zijn hoogtijdagen van de jaren dertig waren toen al voorbij ( Georg Lankester) 

The Brasilian band Taruíra is the name of a choro ensemble in Rio de Janeiro - a sextet that mixes traditional and modern music and "(...) brings multiple languages together and focuses on the Brazilian and Latin music – always with a little bit of jazz" it says from itselfs .... The group started in 2002 as a trio and is today formed by Breno Morais (soprano saxophone and flute), Carlos Watkins (tenor saxophone), Guto Menezes (cavaquinho and viola), José Roberto Leão (violão 7 cordas), Leandro Mattos (pandeiro) and Yuri Garrido (drums). Zo af en toe duikt Patrick van Griethuysen in zijn Haagse kelder op zoek naar platen, die eigenlijk nooit meer het daglicht zien .... laat staan te horen zijn ...... In zijn rubriek over plaatjes uit zijn urnenkelder van vergeten liedjes deze keer een terugblik op Kees Pruis, volkszanger, die in de jaren voor de oorlog op revue- en cabaretavonden razend populair was en daarbij o.a. verschillende keren Zeeland aan deed. (Patrick van Griethuysen)

Roosevelt, in de spotlights ...... Een vijftiental nummers, van de Dust Bowl Blues tot This Land Is Your Land geeft een indrukwekkend beeld van de Amerikaanse maatschappij waarin hij leefde:(Hans Koert)

Lucebert, één van De Vijftigers, liet zich inspireren door de Jazz ...... In een bloemlezing heeft uitgeverij Clos zijn belangrijkste gedichten, tekeningen en gouaches aangevuld met essays en artikelen rond Lucebert uitgebracht als Lucebert Jazz "Ik ben een gemankeerde saxofonist". Op de twee bijgevoegde cd's worden Lucebert's inspiratiebronnen opnieuw uitgevoerd door Michiel Braam's Flex Bent Braam en het historisch belangwekkend concert met o.a. de registratie van het geruchtmakende concert van Misha Mengelberg-Piet Noordijk opnieuw te horen.  (Hans Koert)

I wonder why reviewers and jazz journalists need so many words, most in purple prose, to describe the sound - the almost hypnotic effects of Keith Jarretts music.  Let the music speak for itself.  ECM recently released two great albums: Keith Jarrett Concerts Bregenz - München and No End: Solo / Band.  Two great releases. The former one of Keith Jarretts best solo piano concerts and the latter a 1986 experiment by Keith Jarrett playing other instruments but the piano ....(Hans Koert)

Het debuutalbum van de Portugees-Nederlandse slagwerker Marco Santos met zijn kwartet, getuigt van een gedegen aanpak ... In een  zevental tracks schildert Marcos een beeld rond al zijn (muzikale)  ervaringen - het is een melodisch portret geworden - met een mooie hoes van kunstenaar Laut Rosenbaum, die de inhoud treffend verbeeldt .... Thirty years ago I had an album in my collection of a blues harmonica player, probably Sonny Terry, who could imitate a train on his instrument, which left a railway station, steaming along villages and bridges, blowing its steam whistle at crossings, before it, after three minutes (!) playing time, entered the next city to stop at the platform of the main station. It's no longer part of my collection - I must have sold that album ............. I remembered those effects on the harmonica, which gave me that illusion of a train at full speed, when I listened to the fourth track, entiteld Hobo Blues, of a new album by the Dutch Blues and Roots band Champagne Charlie: Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines. Gait Klein Kromhof imitates a steam engine on this track with his Seydel Harmonica and so you'll understand why the members of Champagne Charlie selected the local Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele shunting-yard in Goes in the southwestern part of The Netherlands for a photo session. This album was released with the support of the Roosevelt Study Center of Middelburg in the southwest part of The Netherlands, which celebrates its 25th birthday this year. Champagne Charlie, which features lead vocalist Sjef Hermans; guitar player Theo De Koning; mandoline player, Geert De Heer, who also plays the banjo, lapsteel guitar and dobro; harmonica player Gait Klein Kromhof, double bass player Peter Bout and drummer Peter Lenselink, was founded almost 25 years ago, as a follow-up of the Downtown Jug Stompers, which played pre-war acoustical country-blues, ragtime and jug band music and featured Champagne Charlie members Theo De Koning and Sjef Hermans.
Champagne Charlie - Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines (MCBR2011-7)
A few years ago this Zeeland Blues and Roots band released, also in cooperation with the Roosevelt Study Centre, an album with songs related to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the US president, whose roots are in this part of The Netherlands, in the province of Zeeland at the former island of Tholen. In the album Down The Road, recorded in 2007, dedicated to Train Songs, Road Songs, Songs About Leavings and Songs About Trying to Get Home, Champagne Charlie touched on the subject of Hobo's and Train Jumpers and the tune Hobo's Lullaby, a Goebel "The Texas Drifter" Reeves composition, can be found on both releases. Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines features 15 tracks, all songs related to the 1930s Hobo's, seasonal workers, which were no tramps or bums, in their own opinion, but gentlemen of the road - The Hobo was the highest in class Sjef quotes in the liner notes Jeff Davis, King of the Hoboes: A hobo was a migratory worker who was always willing to work to make his way. The extensive liner notes by Sjef Hermans make this great album a great reference work about this subject. Did you know that a Dutchman, Gerard Leeflang, was a Hobo himself? He wrote a book about this period in his life entitled American Travels of a Dutch Hobo 1923 - 1926. Isn't that great?

Most songs selected for this album are from the 1930s, the period of the Great Depression, when people like Gerard Leeflang tried to make a living as casual workers ........ The songs selected tell about the hard life of the workers, the trains and how to steal a ride in blind baggage ....... (Slow down, slow down let me step on board I wanna ride your train just before I go) ( J.B. Lenoir in Slow Down). Thanks to the information in the liner notes Hobo Songs in American Roots Music by Sjef Hermans, you can learn a lot about the history of Hobo's and the selected tracks. I liked their version of Slow Down, in which you can hear the train thanks to the harmonica of Gait, but also the stunning tune Big Rock Candy Mountains, in which a Hobo dreams about his Land of Plenty, where hens lay soft boiled egs and the handouts grow on bushes, composed by Harry McClintock, aka Haywire Mac, whose life, as a global hobo, was one big adventure. And what to think about the Blind Blake composition Police Dog Blues, originally recorded in August 1929 for Paramount? - Blues as blues should be played .... I really liked Freight Train, a tune originally recorded by a young Libba Cotton, early 1900s, when she was just a young kid, inspired by the trains that passed her house. She had learned to play the guitar, she named it Stella, upside down, without a re-strung necessary for left-handed playing. The way she played the guitar became unique and is called the Cotton Picking style, referring to the better known Finger Picking Style. She recorded this tune Freight Train in 1958 and became active until her 80s - she passed away June 1987, 92 yeas old. This album by Champagne Charlie - Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines is the second one in a series of co-productions with the Roosevelt Study Center and the band has grew with this new production into its role as a roots band with more then regional aspirations. I'm anxious to learn more about its next project - maybe the music of the Depression Era? A hot item nowadays. I suggest to call it: Cheer Up, The Good Times Are Comin’

The Dutch Blues & Roots band Champagne Charlie goes deeply into the past with its project about Hobo's, seasonal workers from the 1920s and 30s, adventurers, travelling by train as stowaways, seeking for work and fortunes. Sjef Hermans and his men recorded a bunch of tunes, Hobo tunes, related to this subject in an album entiteld Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines, subtitled Hobo Songs in American Roots Music. A great album! Zo'n dertig jaar geleden had ik een lp in mijn verzameling waarin een bluesartiest, waarschijnlijk Sonny Terry, met zijn mondharmonica een trein kon imiteren, die vanaf het vertrek op het station, op stoom komend, steeds sneller langs bruggen en door tunnels snellend, af en toe de stoomfluit hanterend bij een overweg, om tenslotte, na drie-en-een-halve minuut, uitpuffend op het volgende station, te belanden. Ik moest aan dit nummer denken, helaas, de lp verkocht ik in een onbezonnen ogenblik, toen ik het vierde nummer van de nieuwste cd van Champagne Charlie opzette, Hobo Blues, gespeeld door Gait Klein Kromhof, die met zijn Seydel Harmonica de, afgaand op de fraai foto's op de hoes, een voortsnellende SGB Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele imiteert. De treinen en het rangeerterrein van deze Zuid-Bevelandse toeristische attractie, zijn niet toevallig als fotolocatie vor de hoes gekozen van hun nieuwste cd: Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines - alles draait daar immers om treinen! Het album is tot stand gekomen met hulp van het Roosevelt Study Center in Middelburg, dat dit jaar haar 25ste verjaardag viert. Champagne Charlie, met leider zanger Sjef Hermans, gitarist Theo de Koning, op mandoline, dobro, banjo en lapsteel, Geert de Heer, mondharmonicaspeler Gait Klein Kromhof, bassist Peter Bout en slagwerker Peter Lenselink, werd bijna 25 jaar geleden opgericht, als opvolgers van Sjef en Theo's Downtown Jug Stompers, die vooral vooroorlogse akoestische countryblues, ragtime en jugbandmuziek speelde.

Een paar jaar geleden bracht deze Zeeuwse Blues en Rootsband, eveneens in samenwerking met het Roosevelt Study Center een album uit gewijd aan Franklin D. Roosevelt, de Amerikaanse president, wiens wortels nu eenmaal in Zeeland, Tholen om precies te zijn, liggen: Waitin' On Roosevelt. Op de plaat Down The Road, opgenomen in 2007, gewijd aan Train Songs, Road Songs, Songs About Leavings and Songs About Trying to Get Home (= Liedjes over weggaan en proberen de weg naar huis weer te vinden), tipt Champagne Charlie al het onderwerp van de Hobo en Train Jumpers aan met het nummer Hobo's Lullaby, een compositie van Goebel The Texas Drifter Reeves. Dit nummer vind je ook op hun nieuwste plaat, die weer zeer mooi vormgegeven is en vol mooie verhalen staat. Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines bevat alleen maar nummers, gerelateerd aan de Hobo's,

een groep mensen, die gratis gebruik maakten van de lange afstandstreinen, die de VS van oost- naar west doorkruisten, door bijvoorbeeld op rijdende treinen te springen en zo het land door trokken op zoek naar werk en geluk. Het waren zeer zeker geen zwervers, no tramps or bums, vertelt Sjef Hermans in zijn informatie, althans dat vonden ze zelf, geen uitschot maar gentlemen of the road - The Hobo was the highest in class, citeert Sjef de King of Hoboes, Jeff Davis. A hobo was a migratory worker who was always willing to work to make his way.(= Een Hobo is een seizoensarbeider, die nooit te beroerd was om te werken en in zijn levensonderhoud te voorzien). Met de uitgebreide informatie, weliswaar alleen in het Engels, mikt de band op een internationaal publiek; het onderwerp lijkt voor de gemiddelde Zeeuwse fan iets te specialistisch, maar dat doet niets af aan de onderhoudende muziek van de band,die op de plaat te vinden is. Sjef wijst overigens op ene Gerard Leeflang, een Nederlander, die in de jaren twintig enige tijd met en als Hobo in de VS geleefd heeft en zijn ervaringen vastlegde op papier ( American Travels of a Dutch Hobo 1923 - 1926 door Gerard Leeflang)

De meeste nummers van deze plaat dateren uit de jaren dertig, de jaren van de Grote Depressie, de krisis. De meeste nummers gaan dan ook over het harde leven van de Hobo ........... over hun ellende ( I Ain't Got No Home) en de manier om gratis te kunnen reizen, to steal a ride in blind baggage ....... (Slow down, slow down let me step on board I wanna ride your train just before I go) ( citaat: J.B. Lenoir in Slow Down). Het artikel Hobo Songs in American Roots Music geschreven door Sjef Hermans geeft veel informatie over de nummers op de plaat. Het nummer Slow Down fascineert me, omdat Gait hierin met zijn instrument, onlangs won hij dankzij zijn mondharmonicaspel de Dutch Blues Award, de rijdende trein doet herleven
en daarmee de herinnering aan de Sonny Terry-opname (Wie o wie, weet op welke opname ik doel?); ook het aanstekelijke Big Rock Candy Mountains, waarin een hobo droomt van zijn luilekkerland, waar hens lay soft boiled eggs (= de kippen zachtgekookte eieren leggen), limonadebronnen zijn en waar sigaretten aan de bomen groeien .........., alles eind jaren twintig vastgelegd door Harry McClintock, alias Haywire Mac, wiens leven één groot avontuur was; a global Hobo, die over de hele wereld zwalkte. En wie van eerlijke blues houdt kan niet om het nummer Police Dog Blues heen van Blind Blake, dat hij in augustus 1929 voor Paramount opnam. Ook het nummer Freight Train, een nummer oorspronkelijk gecomponeerd door een toen nog erg jonge Libba Cotton op haar Stella, zoals ze haar gitaar noemde, begin 1900, ze was toen nog maar een kind, geïnspireerd door de treinen die langs haar huis raasden. Ze had een gitaar, die ze ondersteboven bespeelde, zonder dat de stemming van de snaren aangepast was ........... De manier waarop ze de gitaar bespeelde werd later de zgn. Cotton Picking stijl genoemd, een verwijzing naar de beter bekende Finger Picking Style. Pas veel later ging Libba weer optreden en ze bleef tot op hoge leeftijd actief; het nummer The Freight Train nam ze pas vijftig jaar na het ontstaan op (1958). In juni 1987 overleed ze, 92 jaar oud.

Deze plaat van Champagne Charlie - Hobo Signs & Railroad Lines is de tweede in een serie co-producties met het Roosevelt Study Center - een mooi eerbetoon aan het jarige studiecentrum, door een even jonge band, die met haar laatste twee producties laat zien, over de grenzen van de Zeeuwse podia te willen kijken en de aspiratie heeft, om haar muziek tot ver buiten de provinciegrenzen te laten klinken! Ik ben nu al benieuwd naar hun volgende project. Wellicht iets over de Grote Depressie begin jaren dertig? Een actueel onderwerp mijns inziens waarover honderden nummers geschreven zijn in de jaren dertig - een titel heb ik al: Cheer up, The Good Times Are Coming ..............

De Zeeuwse Blues & Roots band Champagne Charlie is met haar nieuwste project weer diep in het verleden gedoken met muziek gespeeld door en over zogenaamde Hobo's, seizoensarbeiders, die in de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw door de VS reisden, gratis meeliftend op rijdende treinen. Sjef Hermans en zijn mannen laten in een vijftiental nummers, opgenomen en uitgebracht op een schitterend uitgevoerde cd, zien en horen, dat Zeeland wat hun betreft te klein geworden is ........... Een waardige opvolger van Waitin' On Roosevelt. Keep Swinging wijst graag op dit soort bijzondere producties, waarin het verleden herleeft in het heden. BRASILEIRINHO Een Ontdekkingsreis In De Choro - De Ziel van De Braziliaanse Muziek!

Een paar jaar geleden bracht Mika Kaurismäki, een Finse documentairemaker, gefascineerd door de Braziliaanse Choromuziek, de documentaire Brasileirinho uit.
Deze documentaire is gewijd aan Choromuziek. Ik vond een voorbeschouwing van een documentaire met een net iets andere titel: Sound of Rio - Brasileirinho, wat een voorloper lijkt, of althans een iets andere titel heeft dan de documentaire Braileirinho, dat ik in een eerdere blog als eens introduceerde.

In de film volgt Mika drie Choromuzikanten, het Trio Madeira Brasil en verder komen nog talloze andere bekende en minder bekende Choromuzikanten in beeld zoals Yamandu Costa en Hamilton De Holanda. Op een informele manier laat het de kijker kennismaken met de verschillende stijlen. Ik vond de tracklist, die ik hier onder plaats:

Als je de tracklist langs gaat lijkt het er op dat beide documentaire identiek zijn maar toch zou ik graag van iemand willen horen die dat kan bevestigen.
Vorige week ontdekte ik een "goedkope" versie, beneden de tien euro van deze documentaire Brasileirinho op DVD, dus de kans om jezelf een copie cadeau te doen.

CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE ON THE AIR



De Zeeuwse Blues & Rootsband Champagne Charlie, die eerder dit jaar een CD uitbracht, getiteld Waitin' On Roosevelt, met nummers gerelateerd aan de voormalige Amerikaanse president Franklin D. Roosevelt zal dit weekend te horen zijn op de Nederlandse radio.

De band is te horen vandaag, zaterdag 1 november 2008, bij Spijkers met Koppen op de Vara (12.50 uur) en morgen, zondag 2 november 2008 in het OVT Geschiedenisprogramma van de VPRO (Tussen 10 en 12.00 uur).

Tot op heden nog geen bevestiging gekregen, noch in de krant van vandaag noch op de website van het aangekondigde concert van Henry Threadgill in Porgy en Bess komende donderdag, zoals dat vermeld stond in de PZC in de agenda van donderdag. Feit is, dat Henry Threadgill komende vrijdag optreedt in Theater Lantaren/Venster in Rotterdam. Ik hoop maandag meer te kunnen vertellen over het (eventuele) concert in Porgy en Bass.

EVA TAYLOR and the PERUNA JAZZMEN

I found two great fragments of a concert by the Peruna Jazzmen accompaning Eva Taylor. This blues vocalist, born as Irene Gibbons, passed away in Mineola NY (USA) the 31st of October, 1977, 31 years ago. Here first appearances on stage where at the age of 5 when she worked on trtaveling shows touring along the States, Europe (1906) and even Australia and New Zealand (1900 and 1914).
In the 1920s she married Clarence Williams and changed her name in Eva Taylor. She became a sought after artists on the air and in revues, cabarets, labeled as the Dixie Nightingale. Early 1930, when her popularity was over the hill, she made a recording for Durium. It feels great to have been involved in the find and reissue of this very rare durium record, released as the 5th item of the set of small Durium Juniors, titled De Trouble I've Seen, has been released on the 2nd volume of the Complete Hit of the Week Recordings released by Archeophone, but out of print at the moment. I hope it will be available soon again.

She stayed active even in her old age and I was surpised to find these two fragments by the Danish Peruna Jazzmen, featuring Mikael Zuschlag and Peter Aller on cornets, Claus Forchhammer on clarinet, Arne Hojberg on trombone, Annette Strauss at the piano, Michael Bøving on banjo, Leo Hechmannon tuba and Mik Schack on drums, recorded in the Huset in Copenhagen, Denmark May 1975.
Enjoy this band accompany Eva Taylor, then 80 years old, in two very valuable, but moderate qualified fragments: Sugar Blues and Sister Kate.

Champagne Charlie - Waitin' On Roosevelt

The blues & roots band Champagne Charlie, from the Dutch Delta, as it labels itselves, has released a new album, complete dedicated to songs about the US president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR for short. This album Champagne Charlie - Waitin' On Roosevelt was released a few weeks ago at the day of the presentation of the Four Freedoms Awards at the Abbey of Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland in the southwest of The Netherlands.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945)

A year ago Champagne Charlie was invited to make a CD dedicated to the songs made about Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose ancestors came from Tholen, one of the former islands in the river Scheldt delta. I told about that in a previous blog, titled Champagne Charlie - Roosevelt CD . I love to share with you a fragment about the bands preparations made by a local TV-station: TV Walcheren. Although the language is Dutch, I'm sure you will enjoy the music.

The well designed album contains 21 tunes, all originally recorded between 1931 ( Breadline Blues) up to 1945, the year FDR passed away ( His Spirit Lives On). All tunes have been arranged by Champagne Charlie and recorded for this album. The music is great - western swing, hill billy, blues, jug band music .... roots music as it was played by the common man. In the booklet an interesting article made by Sjef Hermans, titled Waitin' On Roosevelt - songs about Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which makes this album not only a must have because of the music, but also an important source about this period in US history.

In the article he explains how the Roosevelt family, gathered at their summer house The Little Whitehouse, loved to invite local musicians to play. A great picture in front of the album shows the Bun Wright's Fiddle Band at an informal gathering with the Roosevelts ( Franklin is in the middle - his daughter is standing behind him) at the lawn of The Little Whitehouse. Later these gatherings became concerts organized by Eleanor, the First Lady, at the White house, where whites only, as the spirit of that time, played their music; black musicians were not invited. Sjef wrote an extensive detailed survey about the music that was made and it would be great if he could tells us more about this period in a later blog !! Enjoy the tune: Waitin' On Roosevelt, a typically Depression tune, originally recorded in 1934.

The tunes selected by Sjef Hermans and his men, are played by the full band with some guest musicans. The six members of the band are Sjef Hermans, leader and lead vocals, Theo De Koning and Geert De Heer, strings, Gait Klein Kromhof harmonica, Peer Bout bass and Peter Lenselink percussion. The music sounds fresh and relaxed, some well known tunes like Happy Days Are Here Again and numerous unknown titles, like Hillbilly Willie's Blues, FDR in Trinidad and Tell Me Why You Like Roosevelt, to mention some. Love to finish this blog with another fragment: Franklin D. Roosevelt's Back Again, recorded in 1936, when he was re-elected for a second term .

This album with songs dedicated to FDR is an unique document about long forgotten tunes from the 1930s and onwards, dedicated to the most popular US president of the XXth Century, Franklin D. Roosevelt. En wat gaat er hierna gebeuren? ( = And what's next...?) the commentator asks in the first fragment? Zijn de tickets voor New York al geboekt? (= Did you already book tickets for New York?) Sjef told me last week, that they do have an invitation to come to the States next year to play at the festivities around the Four Freedoms Awards in Hyde Park (NY)( the place FDR was born), fall 2009.

CHAMPAGNE CHARLIE: 20 YEARS
The blues- and roots band Champagne Charlie, you read about their latest production in this blog, celebrates its 20th birthday with a concert at the Koorkerkplein opposite Jazz Eetcafé Desafinado in Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands. This concert is sceduled for Saturday the 21st of June 2008 at 3.00 p.m. No entry fees. They will play, of course, tunes from their latest album Waitin' On Roosevelt.

De blues & roots band Champagne Charlie, uit de Dutch Delta, zoals ze zichzelf op de kaart zetten, heeft een nieuwe plaat uitgebracht, geheel gewijd aan de nummers over de Amerikaanse president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, afgekort FDR. Dit album Champagne Charlie - Waitin' On Roosevelt werd een paar weken geleden uitgebracht tijdens de uitreiking van de Four Freedoms Awards in de abdij van Middelburg.

Franklin D. Roosevelt ( 1882-1945)

Een jaar geleden werd de band Champagne Charlie uitgenodigd een CD te maken gewijd aan Franklin D. Roosevelt, wiens voorouders van het voormalige eiland Tholen kwamen, gelegen in de monding van de Westerschelde. Ik heb hierover geschreven in een eerdere blog, getiteld Champagne Charlie - Roosevelt CD. Ik wil graag een fragment laten zien van TV Walcheren, gemaakt tijdens de voorbereidingen voor deze CD.

De mooi uitgevoerde plaat bevat 21 nummers, allemaal titels, die oorspronkelijk opgenomen zijn tussen 1931 ( Breadline Blues) en 1945 (His Spirit Lives On), het jaar waarin FDR overleed; allemaal nummers waarin Roosevelt bezongen wordt door de gewone man. De nummers zijn opnieuw gearrangeerd en door Champagne Charlie opgenomen voor dit album: western swing, hillbilly, blues, jug band muziek .... roots music - muziek van het volk, zoals het gespeeld werd door de man-van-de-straat. In het bijgevoegde boekje schreef Sjef Hermans een uitgebreid artikel, getiteld Waitin' On Roosevelt - songs about Franklin Delano Roosevelt, waarin de achtergronden van deze nummers uitgebreid aan bod komt - een waardevol historisch document over deze periode in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis.

In het artikel wordt verteld, hoe het gezin van Franklin D. Roosevelt, als ze bij elkaar waren in hun zomerhuis, genaamd The Little Whitehouse ( = Het Kleine Witte Huis), graag lokale muzikanten om hen heen hadden, die voor hen speelden. Op de voorkant van de CD staat een prachtige foto van de Bun Wright's Fiddle Band tijdens zo'n informele ontmoeting met de Roosevelts ( Franklin vind je in het midden, met daarachter zijn dochter) op het gazon voor hun zomerhuis. Later groeiden deze ontmoetingen uit, o.l.v. Eleanor, de first lady, de vrouw van de president, tot optredens op het Witte Huis, waar blanke bands ( zwarte bands waren niet welkom volgens de geest van de tijd) uitgenodigd werden om op te treden. Sjefs artikel gaat tot in detail in op de muziek die hij op deze plaat bij elkaar gebracht heeft rond de geliefde president FDR en het zou natuurlijk mooi zijn als hij in de toekomst in deze Keep Swinging blog daar eens wat dieper op zou willen ingaan voor de Nederlandse bezoekers van deze blog, omdat het artikel alleen in het Engels gesteld is!! Luister eens naar het nummer: Waitin' On Roosevelt gespeeld door Champagne Charlie, oorspronkelijk uit 1934; zo'n een typisch Depressie nummer, uit de periode van de economische crisis begin jaren dertig.

De nummers die Sjef Hermans en zijn mannen geselecteerd hebben worden uitgevoerd door de hele band met gastmuzikanten. De zes leden van de band zijn: Sjef Hermans, leider en zang, Theo de Koning en Geert de Heer, allerlei snaarinstrumenten, Gait Klein Kromhof mondharmonica, Peer Bout bas en Peter Lenselink op slagwerk. De muziek klinkt fris en is gemakkelijk toegankelijk. Op de plaat vind je een enkel bekend nummer zoals Happy Days Are Here Again en een heleboel onbekende, zoals Hillbilly Willie's Blues, FDR in Trinidad en Tell Me Why You Like Roosevelt, die je doen realiseren hoe gevarieerd het aanbod aan FDR-nummers uit die tijd is. Het laatste fragment dat ik wil laten horen is het nummer Franklin D. Roosevelt's Back Again, refererend aan zijn herverkiezing voor een tweede termijn als president van de Verenigde Staten in 1936 .

Deze CD is niet alleen een gezellige plaat geworden om heerlijk van te genieten; het is ook een waardevol uniek historisch document rondom de liedjes, die geschreven zijn ter ere van de meest populaire Amerikaanse president van de twintigste eeuw Franklin D. Roosevelt, die vier keer gekozen werd. En wat gaat er hierna gebeuren? vraagt de verslaggeefster op het eerste fragment? Zijn de tickets voor New York al geboekt? Sjef vertelde me afgelopen week dat er een uitnodiging voor een aantal optredens in de Verenigde Staten ligt tijdens de uitreiking van de Four Freedoms Awards in het najaar van 2009 in Hyde Park (NY), de plaats waar FDR geboren werd.
