Champagne Charlie - Roosevelt CD

A month ago the roots and blues band Champagne Charlie presented its last CD Down The Road with a free concert in Middelburg in the shadow of the Lange Jan, the 80 meter high tower of the abbey. Middelburg is the capital of the province of Zeeland, in the southwest part of The Netherlands. Although their last CD was released just a month ago a new cd project is in the pipeline. The Roosevelt Study Center and the Roosevelt Foundation in Middelburg have asked Champagne Charlie to make a CD with songs dedicated to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This CD will be titled Waitin' On Roosevelt.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, born January 1882, was elected four times as president of the USA (1933-1945). He was president of the USA during the Second World War. He passed away April 1945, just a month before the end of the fights in Europe. His ancestors came from Oud Vossemeer, a small village on the former island of Tholen in the province of Zeeland in the southwest part of The Netherlands. That's the reason that the Roosevelt Study Center and the Roosevelt Foundation were founded in this part of the world. Each year this foundation honors leading world citizens whose aspirations are to spread the ideas of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the so-called Four Freedoms. The album Waitin' On Roosevelt will be released during the festivities around these Four Freedom Awards, to be held May 2008 in Middelburg.

Of course the track list isn't available yet, but I'd suggest Sjef Hermans and his men some of the next titles: Roosevelt In Trinidad ( MacLean), a calypso recorded in 1935 by The Atilla, or Happy Days Are Here Again, the 1933 theme song of Roosevelt's New Deal. Or what about: Ballad Of FDR, The Face On The Dime, FDR Blues, Gonna Miss President Roosevelt,or Why I Like Roosevelt, a negro spiritual. Well, enough suggestion up to now: In May 2008 we will know the definitive track selection of Waitin' on Roosevelt.

Last night I enjoyed their album Volle Maan with song in the Dutch language.

Een maand geleden presenteerde de Roots en Blues band Champagne Charlie haar CD Down The Road tijdens een gratis concert in de schaduw van de 80 meter hoge Lange Jan in Middelburg. Middelburg is de hoofdstad van de provincie Zeeland. Hoewel hun laatste CD nog maar een maand oud is wordt er nu al aan een nieuwe gewerkt; een project op verzoek van het Roosevelt Study Center en de Roosevelt Stichting in Middelburg. Het moet een plaat worden met liedjes gewijd aan Franklin Delano Roosevelt. De titel van de CD zal worden: Waitin' On Roosevelt.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, geboren in januari 1882, werd tot viermaal toe gekozen als president van de Verenigde Staten. ( 1933 tot 1945) Hij was Amerika's president tijdens de oorlogsjaren. Hij stierf in april 1945 een maand voordat de gevechten in Europa stopten. Zijn voorouders kwamen uit Oud Vossemeer, een klein dorpje op het voormalige eiland Tholen in Zeeland, de waterrijke provincie in het zuidwesten van Nederland. Het is dan niet zo vreemd dat juist daar het Roosevelt Study Center en de Roosevelt Stichting gevestigd zijn. Elk jaar worden vier bekende wereldburgers geëerd, die het gedachtengoed van Franklin D. Roosevelt uitdragen, de Four Freedoms ( = de Vier Vrijheden). Het album Waitin' On Roosevelt moet dan ook ter gelegenheid van de volgende prijsuitreiking in mei 2008 in Middelburg verschijnen.

Natuurlijk is het nog niet bekend welke nummers er straks op de plaat zullen verschijnen, maar ik wil Sjef Hermans en zijn mannen alvast wat suggesties meegeven: Roosevelt In Trinidad ( MacLean), een calypso opgenomen in 1935 door The Atilla, of Happy Days Are Here Again, het themalied van Roosevelt's New Deal (1933).
