Gerry Mulligan was één van de grootste baritonsaxofonisten uit de geschiedenis van de jazz. Natuurlijk, ik weet dat er meer zijn, die voor deze titel in aanmerking komen, zoals Harry Carney, die in de Duke Ellington band speelde, Serge Chaloff, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber en Gary Smulyan; om maar eens even een incomplete selectie te maken. Mulligan werd vooral bekend als lid van het beroemde orkest rond Miles Davis, dat de Birth of the Cool opnamen vorm gaf en de pianoloze kwartetten met daarin Chet Baker. Vanaf de zomer van 1953 tot in 1954 zat Mulligan in de gevangenis vanwege drugs en toen hij weer op vrije voeten kwam, had Chet Baker ondertussen zijn eigen band opgericht; het eind van hun samenwerking!

In december 1954 introduceerde hij zijn eerste Western Reunion Sextet tijdens een concert op de Hoover High School in Denver met daarin Larry Bunker op slagwerk, Bob Brookmeyer op trombone, Jon Eardley op trompet, Gerry Mulligan zelf op baritonsax, Zoot Sims op tenor en Red Mitchell op bas. Dankzij de vier blazers kreeg deze band zijn typerende volle geluid. Doordat hij zelden een piano gebruikte in zijn kleinere groepen (overigens ontstaan doordat er op het podium van één van de clubs gewoon geen plek was voor zo'n gigantisch instrument) profileerde hij zich met zijn pianoloze groepen. In zijn hart, echter, wilde hij een eigen big band en die droom werd werkelijkheid in 1960 toen hij zijn Concert Jazz Band oprichtte. Zijn Western Reunion Sextet bleef twee jaar bij elkaar, zij het in wisselende samenstelling (met Bob Brookmeyer en Jon Earley als stabiele factors) en is nooit erg bekend geworden. Dit is waarschijnlijk toe te schrijven aan het feit dat er maar weinig opnamen van gemaakt zijn. Er werden drie lp's opgenomen: Presenting the Gerry Muligan Sextet; A Profile of Gerry Mulligan en Mainstream of Jazz. Er bestaan maar enkele live-opnamen van dit Western Reunion Sextet, waaronder die op het eerder aangehaalde concert in Denver (december 1954), een concert in de Basin Street in New York (eind 1955), in de Red Hill Inn in Pennsauken (NJ( (in oktober 1956) en de opnamen in de Storyville Club in Boston ( begin december 1956).

In maart 1956 krijgt Gerry Mulligan de kans om met zijn groep voor een aantal weken naar Europa te komen voor een serie optredens in l'Olympia in Parijs. Natuurlijk grijpt hij die kans en reist af naar de andere kant van de oceaan. De concerten in l' Olympia stelden niet zo veel voor; met zijn sextet moest hij elke avond een kwartiertje vullen als één van de acts tijdens een soort circusuitvoering met populaire muziek, goochelaars en wilde dieren ( een act met zeehonden). Na een week of drie plakte hij nog een tournee langs Europese podia hieraan vast, dat startte in het Eliseo Theater in Rome, in het Winterpaleis in Lyon en het Kurhaus in Scheveningen, met aansluitend een nachtconcert in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Luister maar eens naar het nummer Bernie's Tune dat geregistreerd werd tijdens het optreden in het Eliseo Theater in Rome op 22 februari 1956.

Een (wellicht niet helemaal) complete lijst met podia van deze tournee vind je onder deze blog. Wat een verrassing toen vorig jaar bleek dat het optreden op 7 april 1956 in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam door impresario Lou van Rees vastgelegd was. Deze opnamen werden eind vorig jaar opnieuw uitgebracht door het Muziek Centrum Nederland ( het voormalige Nederlands Jazzarchief) als Gerry Mulligan - Western Reunion. The Sextet Live in Amsterdam 1956. Het is de tweede uitgave in de serie Jazz at the Concertgebouw; de eerste was een registratie van the complete 1955 Chet Baker concerts in Holland.
Deze heruitgave van het Gerry Mulligan concert stelt ons in staat het (bijna) volledige concert opnieuw te beleven. Op het podium zes man: Jon Eardley op trompet, Bob Brookmeyer op de ventieltrombone, Zoot Sims op tenor, Gerry Mulligan op baritonsax en af en toe aan de piano, Bill Crow op bas en Dave Bailey op slagwerk. Studioopnamen van Gerry Mullingan bands zijn, in mijn beleving, altijd wat over-gearrangeerd, onderkoeld haast ( referend aan de gangbare term voor de East Coast jazz; de Cool Jazz), maar hier op het podium gaat de band helemaal los. Wellicht is dit toe te schrijven aan het feit dat dit nachtconcert in Amsterdam één van de laatste in een lange rij was - een soort ontlading dus. Hierdoor is ook te verklaren waarom de beelden uit Rome wat statisch zijn. Luister maar eens, naast elkaar, naar de opname van het nummer Ontet, met Mulligan aan de piano en de uitvoering op het podium. ( Voor een goed vergelijk moet je uiteraard wel eerst de CD gekocht hebben!).

Mulligan loopt in Amsterdam te geinen met zijn collega's en als hij het nummer Night at the Turntable inzet aan de piano bedenkt hij zich na een paar maten en schakelt hij over naar Ontet, waarin hij eerst helemaal in verdwaald, voordat de groep het thema oppakt. Wat een verschil met de "strakke" uitvoering in Rome. In de eerste set komen we verder nummers tegen, die uit het repertoire van het pianoloze kwartet van Gerry Mulligan en Chet Baker stammen zoals Line for Lyons of nummers. die gerelateerd zijn aan Count Basie, zoals Ain't It The Truth met een solo van Bob Brookmeyer. De eerste set eindigt met het nummer Utter Chaos.

Tijdens de tweede set komen we weer wat bekende nummers tegen uit de tijd met Chet, zoals I May Be Wrong en het prachtige My Funny Valentine, waar we het deze keer zonder de zang van Chet moeten doen. Ook nummers als Westwood Walk, die nog dateren uit de tentette periode van Gerry begin jaren vijftig, komen langs. Het blijkt dat de bandleden door tijdgebrek niet meer toegekomen waren aan een geheel nieuw repertoire voor hun Europese tournee en dus de, ietwat herschreven, arrangementen uit het Gerry Mulligan's songbook op de rol hadden gezet. Het concert eindigt, met nog een snelle, een halve minuut durende versie van Stars and Stripes Forever (het blijven Amerikanen!) met het titelstuk Western Reunion. Heerlijk om zo dit Gerry Muligan concert nog eens te kunnen herbeleven, mede ook dankzij de prachtige foto's van Eddy Posthuma de Boer en de live opnamen uit Rome, zodat we ook een beetje een beeld kunnen vormen van de muisici op het podium. Als slot een filmfragment waarin het sextet het bekende Walkin' Shoes speelt:

Rest mij nog de vraag: Het concert in Amsterdam werd, afgaand op de informatie, als een nachtconcert, dat om 12 uur 's nachts begon; moeten we dan de opnamedatum eigenlijk niet aanpassen van 7 naar 8 april 1956?

Gerry Mulligan is one of the greatest baritone saxophone players in jazz history. Okay, I know there are some more, like Harry Carney ( member of the Duke Ellington band), Serge Chaloff, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber and Gary Smulyan ( to make an incomplete selection). He became famous, participating in the Birth of the Cool recordings and his piano less quartets, featuring Chet Baker. From mid 1953 until 1954 Mulligan served a prison sentence, due to a narcotics bust and when he was released Chet Baker had started his own band; his cooperation with Baker was over!

In December 1954 he introduced his first Western Reunion Sextet at the Hoover High School in Denver featuring Larry Bunker on drums, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Jon Eardley on trumpet, Gerry Mulligan on baritone saxophone, Zoot Sims on tenor saxophone and Red Mitchell on bass. Thanks to the four horns, this band got a full band sound. The fact that he didn't use a piano in his quartets and sextets gave his groups an original and unique format, but he lost his heart to the big band; a dream he could translate in the 1960s with the founding of his Concert Jazz Band. His Western Reunion Sextet stayed together for two years and isn't very known; maybe because only a few recordings were made. It recorded only three times: Presenting the Gerry Mulligan Sextet; A Profile of Gerry Mulligan and Mainstream of Jazz. There are only a few live recordings of this Western Reunion Sextet ( like the mentioned Hoover High School concert in Denver (Dec. 1954), a concert at the Basin Street (New York)(Late 1955), at the Red Hill Inn in Pennsauken (NJ Oct. 1956) and the Storyville Club in Boston ( early Dec. 1956).

In 1956 Gerry Mulligan gets a chance to leave for Europe for a three week series of concerts at the Theatre l'Olympia in Paris. Of course, Gerry seized the opportunity and left for France. The concerts in l' Olympia weren't very spectacular, as the sextet had to play for one quarter of an hours each evening as one of the "acts" in a vaudeville show with magicians, wild animals ( seals) and popular singers. After the three weeks gig they toured along some European venues, like the Eliseo Theatre in Rome, the Palais d' Hiver in Lyon and the Kurhaus in Scheveningen ( near The Hague) and at midnight that same evening at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Great to find this film fragments from the Rome concert, but, what a surprise to learn that also the live concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, on the 7th of April, 1956 has survived on an audio tape. These recordings were released in the series Jazz at the Concertgebouw, a few months ago by the Muziek Centrum Nederland (the former Dutch Jazz Archive) as Gerry Mulligan - Western Reunion. The Sextet Live in Amsterdam 1956. It's the second record released in this Jazz at the Concertgebouw series; the first one was the complete 1955 Chet Baker concerts in Holland. Thanks to impresario Lou Van Rees, who recorded the concert, we can now listen to the (almost) entirely midnight concert.

On stage six men: Jon Eardley on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer on the valve trombone, Zoot Sims on tenor saxophone, Gerry Mulligan on baritone saxophone and the piano, Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Studio recordings by Gerry Mulligan show, most of the time, rather over-arranged performances; there is a world of differences listening to this live performance. Mulligan is joking with his colleagues and when he starts to play the theme of the second tune Nights At The Turntable, not selected on forehand, according a survived programme of the evening, he changes his mind and continues with a piece called Ontet. I think that the relaxed an elated mood on stage has to do with the act that this concert was one of the last from the European tour. Have a look to the same tune, Ontet, as played in Rome six weeks earlier, which is more modest; this from fragment is from the start of the tour!

In the first set they play the well known tune Line for Lyons, known from the Gerry Mulligan-Chet Baker piano-less-quartet-days and a Count Basie tune Ain't It The Truth with a solo by Bob Brookmeyer. The first set ends with Utter Chaos.

During the second set some more traditionals from the Quartet-days are played, like the standard I May Be Wrong and the great My Funny Valentine (a non-vocal version); but also a tune like Westwood Walk, he had written early 1950s for his Tentette. It seems that the band left for Europe without new repertoire, so they had to play some quartet-arrangements, re-written for sextet. At the end of the concert they play a half minute version of Stars and Stripes Forever and finish the concert with Western Reunion, the signature tune for the sextet. It's really great to listen to these live recordings, to look at the photos made by Eddy Posthuma de Boer and to share the atmosphere during the concert with the live fragments from the Teatro Eliseo in Rome, Italy, on the 22nd of February, 1956. Enjoy the sextet in Walkin' Shoes, a well-known Mulligan composition from the Mulligan-Baker Quartet period, as played in Rome.

I wonder - if the Dutch concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam started at midnight, shouldn't the recording date for this concert be the 8th of April, 1956?
