Today I love to point you to a great Japanese Audio-Park release, titled Early Be-Bop Scene 1944-1949. (APCD-6101). Subtitled: Dedicated to Chubby Jackson. A few days ago I posted the first part dedicated to Chubby Jackson - today the second half, dedicated to Serge Chaloff.
The second half of this Early Be-Bop Scene CD is dedicated to the baritone sax player Serge Chaloff. He started his musical career in the Boyd Raeburn’s band in 1945 before he was incorporated in Woody Herman’s so-called “Second Herd” band a few years later. In the Herman band he belonged to its famous reed section known as the Four Brothers (includes Serge Chaloff, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn and Stan Getz). On this compilation you won’t find any Woody Herman Band recordings, nor tracks played by the Four Brothers. These records are well known and easily accessible. Like the Chubby Jackson sides the musicians of the groups presented on this part of the album are also related to the Herman band and contain sidemen like Bill Harris, Flip Phillips, Ralph Burns, Oscar Pettiford and Denzil “Da Costa” Best.
Serge Chaloff was an important figure of the be-bop and an significant improviser on baritone saxophone. He begun to win first place baritone in many of the magazine polls and he could have made a major career in music, if drugs hadn’t ruined his life. The last six tracks of this album are Chaloff’s first recordings with small groups under his direction. I like the slow number Nocturne composed by Ralph Burns very much; it contains a very haunting solo of Chaloff on baritone sax. Although most of Serge Chaloff’s recordings made with the Second Herd, the Four Brothers and his 1956 Blue Serge Capitol album have been reissued on LP or CD it seems that his early small-group recordings are now only available on this new album. The Serge Chaloff Mosaic set, on which these tracks were to be found too, has been out of print for several years, so we are privileged with this compilation. The transfers sound clear and fresh and you should have a good reason to neglect this production.

Vandaag wil ik een schitterende CD uitgave belichten uitgegeven door het Japanse Audio-Park, getiteld Early Be-Bop Scene 1944-1949. (APCD-6101). De ondertitel luidt: Dedicated to Chubby Jackson. (= Gewijd aan Chubby Jackson). Een paar dagen geleden postte ik de eerste helft over Chubby Jackson - vandaag het tweede dat vooral over baritonsaxofonist Serge Chaloff gaat.
Het tweede deel van de Early be-Bop Scene CD is gewijd aan de baritonsaxofonist Serge Chaloff. Hij begon zijn muzikale carierre in de band van Boyd Raeburn in 1945, voordat hij, een paar jaar later, toetrad tot de Woody Herman band, de zogenaamde “Second Herd” band. In de band van Woody Herman, behoorde hij tot de beroemde rietsectie beter bekend als de Four Brother, die bestond uit Serge Chaloff, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn en Stan Getz. Op deze CD vind je echter geen opnamen met de Four Brothers; niet erg, want deze opnamen zijn op andere heruitgaven gemakkelijk te vinden. Net als de Chubby Jackson opnamen, zoals die op het eerste helft van de plaat staan, vind je er musici uit de Woody Herman band, zoals Bill Harris, Flip Phillips, Ralph Burns, Oscar Pettiford en Denzil “Da Costa” Best.
Serge Chaloff was een belangrijk figuur in de be-bop en een belangrijke improvisator op de baritonsax. Hij plaatste zichzelf als beste baritonspeler op heel wat polls en hij beloofde een grote carriere tegemoet te gaan ware het niet dat hij niet van de drugs af kon blijven. De laatste zes nummers van deze plaat zijn Serge Chaloff’s eerste opnamen onder eigen naam. Ik heb genoten van het langzame nummer Nocturne, gecomponeerd door Ralph Burns, met een onvergetelijke solo van Serge Chaloff op de baritonsax. Serge Chaloff nam in die tijd vooral platen op met de Second Herd, de Four Brothers en die zijn, net als zijn Blue Serge Capitol album uit 1956, alle heruitgebracht. Het lijkt erop dat zijn vroege opnamen met zijn sextet voor het eerst weer beschikbaar zijn op deze CD. De Serge Chaloff Mosaic set, waarop deze nummers wel te vinden waren, is al jaren uitverkocht, dus mogen we met deze plaat in onze handjes knijpen. En zoals ik al in mijn voorgaande bijdrage verwoordde: de transfers zijn helder en fris, dus een prima reden om deze plaat aan te schaffen.
Op de tweede helft van de CD Early Be-Bop Scene 1944-1949 komt voornamelijk de baritonsaxofonist Serge Chaloff naar voren. In een voorafgaande bijdrage heb ik al geschreven over de eerste helft van deze aanbevolen plaat met bassist Chubby Jackson.
