Chubby Jackson

Today I love to point you to a great Japanese Audio-Park release, titled Early Be-Bop Scene 1944-1949. (APCD-6101). Subtitled: Dedicated to Chubby Jackson. Today the first part, dedicated to Chubby Jackson - later the second part dedicated to Serge Chaloff.

With the Early Be-Bop Scene CD the Japanese Audio Park label started a new series. This CD is dedicated, as the cover suggests, to Chubby Jackson, the double-bass player who died October 2003 eighty-five years old. In fact, this flag doesn’t covers the cargo completely, because on half of the tracks Chubby Jackson isn’t present.

This production is dedicated to two, now almost forgotten, early be-bop musicians, viz. Chubby Jackson and Serge Chaloff. Both do have their membership of Woody Herman’s band in common. Chubby Jackson, called the rhythmic soul of the band, started his professional musical career in 1942 in the Charlie Barnett Orchestra and changed to Herman’s “First Herd” band a year later. He stayed with that band until Woody reformed his band in 1947. The Woody Herman band was famous for the force and originality of its music. Some musicians in that band, like Neal Hefti, Ralph Burns, Flip Philips and Bill Harris are to be found on the first recordings Chubby Jackson made as the leader of a sextet and they were not only musical associates, but also close friends. This is to be heard in these early rare sextet recordings on this CD. Chubby was also very active as a composer and the first half of this album contains six of his own compositions like Gotcha’ Covered and Northwest Passage, which he wrote in cooperation with the piano player Ralph Burns. Although these be-bop tunes were recorded sixty year ago they sound new and fresh to me as if they were made yesterday; it gratifies the senses. When Woody Herman reorganised his "First Herd" band in 1947 Chubby Jackson made a tour with his group to Scandinavia and brought the first be-bop to Europe with a sextet that included Conte Candoli, Terry Gibbs, Frankie Socolow, Lou Levy and Denzil “Da Costa” Best.

This Audio Park CD ends its first half with two tracks of this Fifth Dimensional Jazz Group, he recorded for Cupol in Stockholm (Sweden) January 1948. Chubby remembered, how interested and enthusiast the Swedish audience was to hear the “new” music. “The old be-bop professor” as he calls himself at a program for the Swedish radio said: Such interest in bebop I have never seen in America. They face it exactly for what it is – a new phase of jazz. As far as I know the two Swedish tracks on this CD are the only ones that have been issued before on a Dragon Bebop Enters Sweden 1947-49 CD.
The second half of the Early Be-Bop Scene 1944-1949 CD contains tracks with Serge Chaloff. I will make a contribution about that later.

Vandaag wil ik een schitterende CD uitgave belichten uitgegeven door het Japanse Audio-Park, getiteld Early Be-Bop Scene 1944-1949. (APCD-6101). De ondertitel luidt: Dedicated to Chubby Jackson. (= Gewijd aan Chubby Jackson). Vandaag het eerste deel over Chubby Jackson - later het tweede dat vooral over baritonsaxofonist Serge Chaloff gaat.

Met deze Early Be-Bop Scene CD startte het Japanese Audio-Park label een aantal jaren geleden een nieuwe serie. Deze CD Early Be-Bop Scene 1944-1949 is, zoals de hoes aangeeft, gewijd aan Chubby Jackson, de bassist, die in oktober 2003 op 85-jarige leeftijd overleed. Eigenlijk dekt de vlag de lading niet helemaal, omdat op de helft van de nummers Chubby Jackson niet meespeelt.

Deze productie is gewijd aan twee, nu bijna vergeten, vroege be-bop musici, namelijk Chubby Jackson en Serge Chaloff; beiden speelden in de band van Woody Herman.
Chubby Jackson begon zijn professionele carriere in 1942 in het orkest van Charlie Barnett en stapte een jaar later over naar de “First Herd” band. Daar bleef hij totdat Woody zijn band in 1947 hervormde. De Woody Herman band was beroemd om zijn power en originaliteit. Sommige musici uit die band, zoals Neal Hefti, Ralph Burns, Flip Philips en Bill Harris zijn terug te vinden op de eerste opnamen van Chubby Jackson als leider van zijn sextet. Ze waren niet alleen collega's maar ook goede vrienden. Je kunt dit horen in de zeldzame sextet opnamen op deze CD. Chubby was ook een actieve componist en als je de eerste helft van deze plaat bekijkt vind je er zes eigen composities, zoals Gotcha’ Covered and Northwest Passage, dat hij schreef samen met pianist Ralph Burns. Hoewel deze be-bop zo'n zestig jaar geleden opgenomen werden, klinken ze nog steeds nieuw en fris alsof ze gisteren op de plaat vastgelegd werden - een lust voor het oor. Op het moment dat Woody Herman zijn “First Herd” band reorganiseerde ( in 1947 ) maakte Chubby Jackson een tournee met zijn groep door Scandinavië en brachten zo voor het eerst de nieuwe muziek, de bebop, naar Europa met een sextet waarin we Conte Candoli, Terry Gibbs, Frankie Socolow, Lou Levy en Denzil “Da Costa” Best tegenkomen.

De eerste helft van deze CD eindigt met twee opnamen van Chubby Jackson's Fifth Dimensional Jazz Group, waarmee hij voor Cupol in Stockholm in januari 1948, nu zestig jaar geleden, opnamen maakte. Chubby herinnerde hoe geinteresseerd en enthousiast het Zweedse publiek reageerde op de "nieuwe" muziek. Tommy Potter's Hard Funk

Last year I posted several contributions about musicians, that seem to be almost forgotten now, mostly due to the fact that they were "just" sidemen in large orchestras or groups and never got the opportunity to display themselves in solos or own recordings, like Frank Foster, Bill Harris, Frank Morgan or Gigi Gryce. This time I love to introduce you to a great bass player, Tommy Potter, labeled in the 1960 New Edition of the Encyclopedia of Jazz by Leonard Feathers as One of the first and best bass products of the bop generartion.

Tommy Potter-Charlie Parker

Tommy Potter, born in September 1915 and passed away March 1988, started his career as piano and guitar player, but aged 25 he started to play the bass. He met Charlie Parker early 1940s and together with piano player John Malachi they bcame members of the Billy Eckstine Band.
He became the bass player in the regular Charlie Parker quintet late 1940s and you can find him on a lot of bebop recordings from that period with great names like Bud Powell, Wardel Gray, Earl Hines and Stan Getz. In the early 1950s bebop had also entered Europe, and, due to the fact that Sweden had not been conquered by the German, a "modern styled" bebop scene developed. It all started with the first Americans visiting Sweden late 1940s, like Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody and Chubby Jackson and his Fifth Dimensional Jazz Group. Swedish musicians, like Rolf Ericson and Stan Hasselgard left for the States. In 1956 Tommy Potter, Freddie Redd, Benny Bailey (I heard him 10 years ago as a guest player with the Piet Noordijk Quartet at the Stadsschouwburg in Middelburg, in the southwestern part of The Netherlands), and Joe Harris left the States to play in Sweden with musicians like the before mentioned trumpet player Rolf Ericson, trombone player Ake Persson, Gunnar "Hacke" Bjorksten, Stig Gabrielsson and Erik Norstorm on reeds.

They recorded three sessions, between the 10th and 16th of September 1956, all in Stockholm. These tunes were all originally released as singles or EPs and six were released as a 25 cm LP titled Hard Funk. This LP and five more tracks from these sessions are now available on a Lonehill Jazz release Tommy Potter's Hard Funk. Although Tommy Potter stayed active in music until the mid 1960s, and recorded with numerous men like Tyree Glenn, Buck Clayton, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Jimmy McPartland and Buddy Tate, these recordings are the only ones under his own name.

Not all the September 1956 recordings have been reissued yet. Lonehill Jazz says to reissue the remaining tracks later including a live recording made at Folkets Park, Stockholm on the 30th of July 1956, that has been discovered recently. I'm anxious to hear these tracks too.
This Tommy Potter's Hard Funk CD is one of my best buys from 2007. What a great reording !! Try to get yourself a copy. ( Lonehill Jazz LHJ10216 )

Afgelopen jaar besteedde ik aandacht aan verschillende musici, die schijnbaar helemaal vergeten zijn, meestal omdat ze weggestopt bleven in grote ensembles of in bands waarin ze weing soloruimte kregen. Voorbeelden die langs kwamen zijn Frank Foster , Bill Harris, Frank Morgan of Gigi Gryce. Deze keer een groot, onbekend gebleven bassist, Tommy Porter, in de New Edition of the Encyclopedia of Jazz van Leonard Feathers uit 1960 beschreven als One of the first and best bass products of the bop generation. ( = Eén van de eerste en beste bassisten van de bopgeneratie)
Tommy Potter-Charlie Parker
Tommy Potter, geboren in september 1915 en overleden maart 1988, begon zijn carriere op de piano en gitaar, maar stapte, op zijn 25ste over op de bas. Hij ontmoette begin jaren veertig Charlie Parker en samen met pianist John Malachi werden ze lid van de band van Billy Eckstine.

Eind jaren veertig bezochten Amerikanen, die de nieuwe bebopstijl speelden, Zweden, zoals Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody en Chubby Jackson met zijn Fifth Dimensional Jazz Group. Zweedse musici als Rolf Ericson en Stan Hasselgard vertrokken naar de VS. In 1956 bezoeken Tommy Potter, Freddie Redd, Benny Bailey (Ik hoorde hem 10 jaar geleden als speciale gast bij het Piet Noordijk kwartet in de Stadsschouwburg in Middelburg) en Joe Harris Zweden en spelen er met Zweedse musici als de eerder genoemde trompettist Rolf Ericson, trombonist Ake Persson en de rietblazers Gunnar "Hacke" Bjorksten, Stig Gabrielsson and Erik Norstorm.

Hoewel Tommy Potter nog actief bleef spelen op de bas en nog op heel wat opnamen te horen is, zoals bij Tyree Glenn, Buck Clayton, Al Cohn en Zoot Ssims, JimmyMcPartland en Buddy Tate, zijn dit de enige opnamen die hij ooit maakte onder eigen naam.

Niet al zijn september 1956 opnamen zijn nu uitgegeven. Lonehill Jazz belooft dat de resterende opnamen ook uitgegeven zullen worden plus een onlangs opgedoken liveopname uit het Folkets Park, Stockholm van 30 juli 1956. Ik ben reuze benieuwd naar deze heruitgave.

Deze Tommy Potter's Hard Funk CD behoort tot één van mijn beste aankopen van het afgelopen jaar. Wat een heerlijke plaat. Probeer een exemplaar van deze CD te pakken te krijgen. ( Lonehill Jazz LHJ10216 )
