Kid Punch Miller

The same stories could be told about Louis Armstrong and Punch Miller. This skilled, but almost forgotten trumpet player, was as good as Louis, but Punch Miller never really made it big.

In the 1940s and 1950s he became part of the group New Orleans Revival musicians, like George Lewis, that toured around the world with their music.
He died in 1971 in his hometown New Orleans.
I found myself a great Herwin album, titled "Kid Punch" Miller Jazz Rarities 1929 - 1930 ( Herwin 108 ) ( a STEREO-LP the cover reads - can you imagine?) with recordings Punch Miller made with bands like King Mutt and his Tennessee Thumpers, The Scare Crow ( = a blues singer with Gene Hill's Chicago Rhythm Boys), Frankie "Half Pint"Jaxon with Punches Delegates of Pleasure, Jimmy Bertrand's Washboard Wizards and Frankie Franko ( = Francois Moseley) and his Louisianians - all rather unknown local groups. I had only heard about Half Pint Jaxon and Jimmy Bertrand so some performances were a suprise for me. Especially the King Mutt recordings surprised me with Arnett Nelson on clarinet and Punch Miller on cornet.
This album doesn't give you a complete look to Miller's early musical heritage - as it doesn't contain the Tiny Parham sides. You need to listen for that to the great Timeless compilation on CD or the Collector's Classics on LP. His recordings with trombone player Albert Wynn seem to be great too, so I'll have to dig in my collection for these records.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
