Bill Harris

Bill Harris is one of those trombone players that is almost forgotten now. Most of his career he played in the Woody Herman band ( 1944 until 1959 ) and being part of such a huge orchestra means that ones contribution is rather hidden into the collective sound of the band. Bill Harris ( 1916 - 1973 ) started his career in the late 1930s, playing in bands like Gene Krupa's and later in Benny Goodman's, before he started to play in the Woody Herman band. In the 1950s he toured with the JATP ( Jazz At The Philharmonic ) orchestra and it lasted until 1952 before he made his first own recordings, as the Bill Harris Herd ( Herd remembers to the Woody Herman band) or more complete: Bill Harris and his Orchestra Featuring Chubby Jackson. Orchestra conducted by Ralph Burns). This LP is now part of a 2CD set, released by Lonehill Jazz that contains The Complete Fifties Sessions.
Bill Harris made two more records during this period. The 2CD opens with the September 1957 set, where Bill Harris plays with Friends. He had chosen some good friends in music for that session, like Ben Webster, who really plays some great solos together with Bill. What about I Surrender Dear and Where Are You. The greatest tune from that session is Just One More Chance, where Ben and Bill start playing by turns some phrases, before Ben starts to talk to Bill, as if they are eating their midday snack:

(Ben) You feel allright?
(Bill) Yeah Ben, I feel good?
....... and later
(Ben) What you're doing?
(Bill) I'm still with Woody
( Ben) Woody? Who?

(Ben) Oh, Woody .........
(and then some meaningfull silence for a few seconds).
I think both Bill Harris as Ben Webster are on their best during that tune. Some other friends during that session are Jim Rowles at the piano, Red Mitchell bass and Stan Levey drums - almost an all-star band you'd dream about !!
The third session was recorded one week later, featuring the same rhythm session, but without Ben Webster but with vocalist Bob Dorough. A great recollection of a great trombone player, Bill Harris, now almost forgotten. I found a fragment of the Jazz All Star Octet, featuring Hank Jones : Piano - Ray Brown : Bass - Buddy Rich : Drums - Bill Harris : Trombone - Lester Young : Tenor Sax - Harry Edison : Trumpet - Flip Phillips ; Tenor Sax and Ella Fitzgerald doing vocals. Bill Harris maakte nog twee platen onder eigen naam. De dubbelCD opent met de september 1957 set, waar Bill Harris met Friends ( vrienden) speelt. In zijn groep had hij een aantal goede musici bij elkaar gezocht, zoals Ben Webster. Ben Webster is erg op dreef en speelt schitterend. Hij is te horen in een paar prachtige solos afgewisseld met Bill op de trombone, zoals in I Surrender Dear en Where Are You. Het mooiste nummer vind ik opgetwijfeld Just One More Chance, waar Ben en Bill om en om beginnen om na een aantal maten een flutgesprek te beginnen, alsof ze tussen de middag hun boterham op eten:

Ik denk dat Bill Harris en Ben Webster op hun best zijn tijdens dit nummer. Andere Friends mogen ook niet onvermeld blijven, want de bezetting van het kwintet leest als een all-star band: Jim Rowles aan de piano, Red Mitchell bas en Stan Levey op slagwerk. Een groep om van te dromen !
De derde sessie werd een week later opgenomen, nu zonder Ben Webster, maar met dezelfde ritmesectie. Bob Dorough is de zanger. Deze heruitgave is een mooi eerbetoon aan een groot trombonist; jarenlang weggestopt in de Woody Herman band.
