A week ago I trumpet forth the Blue Note Connoisseur CD Series praises, reviewing Introducing Kenny Cox; this time I love to introduce you to another record in this series from Frank Foster titled Manhattan Fever ( Blue Note 385191 )
Frank Foster was born in September 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) and he studied tenor saxophone at the Wilberforce University. His first concerts were late 1940s with musicians like Wardell Gray and Elvin Jones. In 1953 he joined the Count Basie Orchestra and would play there for over 10 years. He started to compose and arranged music for several orchestras. In the 1970s he played with Elvin Jones, Duke Pearson and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra.
He had his own groups between the 1960s and 1980s, some small, but also big bands, like his Loud Minority Big Band. The recordings made for this Manhattan Fever album are from 1968 and all tunes were composed by Frank Foster, except Bill English's Seventh Avenue Bill. This reissue contains some material from January 1969 that was never released due to the fact that the album Manhatan Fever didn't sell well. These unheard tracks are really great and when you listen to the arrangements these septet recordings sound like a small big band.

Two years after Count Basie past away, Frank Foster took over the direction of the Count Basie Orchestra and it became a success. He directed this orchestra, that played the music in the Basie-tradition, with arrangements from Frank Foster himself up to July 1995. I found a film fragment of a recording with this "new" Count Basie Orchestra you sure will like and before that I posted some fragments of a documentary made during a concert (December 2006) to honor Dr. Frank Foster ( he received an honorary doctorate degree at Central State University) with interviews and a lot of musicians that are close to Frank Foster's music. I guess you'll like it too.

Een week geleden stak ik de loftrompet over de heruitgaven van Blue Note in de Connoisseur CD Series, in de bijdrage Introducing Kenny Cox ; deze keer wil ik een andere heruitgave uit deze voortreffelijke serie naar voren halen, getiteld Frank Foster - Manhattan Fever ( Blue Note 385191 )
Frank Foster werd geboren in Cincinnati, Ohio ( Verenigde Staten) in september 1928 en hij studeerde tenorsax aan de Wilberforce University. Zijn eerste optredens waren met musici als Wardell Gray en Elvin Jones. In 1953 kwam hij bij het orkest van Count Basie terecht en daar zou hij meer dan tien jaar blijven. Hij begon te componeren en te arrangeren, meest voor grotere orkesten, en deed dat erg goed; dit album is daar een voorbeeld van. In de jaren zeventig speelde hij met musici als Elvin Jones, Duke Pearson en het Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orkest.
Hij leidde zijn eigen groepen in de jaren zestig tot en met tachtig, soms kleinere formaties, maar ook big bands, zoals zijn Loud Minority Big Band. De opnamen voor dit Manhattan Fever album zijn uit 1968 en alle nummers werden gecomponeerd door Frank Foster zelf, met uitzondering van Bill English's Seventh Avenue Bill. Verder staan er op deze heruitgave niet eerder gepubliceerde nummers, opnamen, gemaakt in januari 1969, die bij Blue Note op de plank bleven liggen. Ze werden niet eerder uitgebracht omdat de eerste lp. Manhattan Fever, destijds slecht verkocht. Deze nooit eerder gehoorde opnamen zijn fantastisch en dankzij voortreffelijke arrangementen van Foster klinkt het septet als een heuse big band.

Ik vond een fragment van een optreden van deze band ( het "nieuwe" Count Basie Orkest) en daarvoor een deel uit een documentaire gemaakt tijdens een concert (december 2006) ter ere van Dr. Frank Foster ( hij heeft een eredoctoraat gekregen aan de Central State University) met optredens en interviews met de musici, waar hij het meest mee heeft opgetreden.
