Conte Candoli

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

This great reissue, titled Conte Candoli Quintet with Bill Holman and Lou Levy Complete Recordings ( Definitive Records DRCD11300 ) contains two complete LPs: The July 1955 Bethlehem Conte Candoli album and the 1955 West Coast Wailers LP.
Last night I enjoyed the first one.

Conte Candoli was born in Mishawaka IN ( USA) in 1927 and played during the 1940s trumpet in the Woody Herman band. Between 1947 and 1953 he is to be found in several big bands like Stan Kenton's and Charlie Barnet's and some smaller groups lead by Charlie Ventura and Chubby Jackson. In 1954 he made his own group, and moved to the east coast where he became a member of the Howard Rumsey Lighthouse All Stars. With his own group he made the recordings avalable on this reissue.

The Conte Candoli Quintet features Conte on trumpet, Bill Holman on tenor saxophone, Lou Levy at the piano. Leroy Vinnegar (b) and Lawrence Marable (dm) are responsable for the rhythm section.
Bill Holman came from the Stan Kenton Orchestra too, and was a skilled composer and arranger. Two tracks of this LP, Toots Sweet and Jazz City Blues are his own compositions.
Lou Levy played as a piano player in several bands during the 1940s before he retired for some years in 1950. In 1954 he started again and this is one of his first recordings since his stop. He had played at Woody Herman's band with Conte Candoli before and went to Sweden with Chubby Jackson , together with Conte Candoli.
The rhytm section contains two rather unexperienced musicians, at that time. Leroy Vinnegard grew up as a skilled bass player in all kinds of groups, like the groups of Chaloff, Getz, Geller, Rogers and Baker, to name some. He is known for his walking bass lines, melodic solos and a keen sense of swing.
The tracks on this first LP are: Toots Sweet - Jazz City Blues ( named after the Jazz City Club in Hollywoord where they worked for some time), My Old Flame, Full Count, I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, Groovin' Higher and the Miles Davis composition Four.
I like this recordings very much and I'm anxious to listen to the second part of this release, the West Coast Wailers LP, recorded three weeks later.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
