Hal McKusick Kwartet Opnamen

( To the English translation.) Hal McKusick Quartet Recordings
v.l.n.r.: Arnold Ross piano - Blinky Gardner slagwerk - Dale Pearce trompet - Harry The Bear Babasin cello - Hal McKusick altsax - Herbie Harper trombone en Jimmy Giufffre tenorsax.

English ( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling) Hal McKusick Kwartet Opnamen

When a jazz musician made his career hidden in the sax section of one of those famous 1940s big bands, it isn't so strange that his name might be forgotten now .... if he didn't made his own recordings which contain his musical heritage. Remember Lee Young, who recently passed away - drummer in big bands and studio bands, almost forgotten, in contrast with his brother Lester, who became a known artist. Hal McKusick played the alto saxophone in numerous big bands in the 1940s, almost anonimous, but thanks to some recordings under his own name Hal McKusick is now remembered as a musician, who made some surprising albums. After these great releases he didn't made any recordings under his own name again. Learn all about him in Hal McKusick Quartet recordings.

The story starts in the trenches in France, twenty years after the Great War ( 1914-1918) ended, Stan remains at his post although the war is over. This film, that runs almost one hour, was Hal Roach final film for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and one of his most succesfull ones.

Leave 'Em Laughing

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
On the 28th of January 1928, eighty years ago, the Stan Laurel (1890-1965) and Oliver Hardy (1892-1957) two-reeler, Leave 'Em Laughing was released as a side film in the Hal Roach All Star Series. It is an early and not so well known example of a Laurel and Hardy short.
Oliver Hardy en Stan Laurel in Leave 'Em Laughing (1928)
The story is very simple: Stan has a terrible toothache in the middle of the night. He can't sleep and so can't Oliver of course. This first act is rather slow in action, but has a lot of typically Laurel and Hardy jokes like the nail on the floor and the leaking water bag. In the second act the next day they finally visit the dentist; portrayed like a cruel tyrant, not a very inspiring confidence in Stanley's eyes, but Oliver tries to reassure Stan, which cost him one of his teeth. When he tries to get Stan into the dentist chair, they both get an overdoses of laughing gas.
Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy and Edgar Kennedy in Leave 'Em Laughing (1928)
In the third act they drive their car, a Ford Touring, as two drunk men; bumping into each car they see. In the middle of a crossing a policeman ( played by Edgar Kennedy ( 1890-1948), nicknamed Mr. Slow Burn - if you've seen the film you know why .... ) tries to regulate the traffic and when he finally, provoked by the two men, wants to arrest them in their own car, they got ducking in the last shot. A well known typically Laurel and Hardy end ..... The street scenes were filmed in Culver City, the MGM film street used in most of their films. Piet Schreuder, a Dutch graphic developer, made a documentary about this city. I wrote about it in a previous contribution a year ago
This eighty years old silent film, is one of those great Laurel and Hardy classics, that have been preserved on DVD. The humor is recognizable, but too slow for modern kids, I guess, but, old "kids" like me, still enjoy these classics now-and-then.

I found the film, Leave 'M Laughing, on an internet page, so if you like you can view the complete film. Enjoy it.

Sommige grappen werden in latere films verder uitgediept.

The Beau Hunks Projects

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
I wrote once that I'm fascinated by all jazz (related) styles of music made between 1907 and 2007. A lot of people can't imagine that I'm serious about that. How can you enjoy the music of Lee Morgan or Kenny Dorham in the morning, play the music of the Husk O'Hare Super Orchestra of Chicago in the afternoon and the modern sounds of Alexander von Schlippenbach in the evening? If you really enjoy jazz music, you don't need to have knowledge about the structure of a blues theme, or the different instruments Adolpho Sax has developed, but if you have never heard about Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington or Paul Whiteman; how can you understand the music played by musicians on stage? Really, I once met a jazz saxophone player who had never heard of Charlie Parker. He played in a kind of funky fushion style and claimed to be a jazz musician, but he had never heard of Charlie Parker. Charlie who? Charlie Parker? Never heard of him !

People who claim to have a survey in jazz history, don't realise that the knowledge most people have is rather minimal and if information exist, it is patchy knowledge. A lot of information is gone, or has been lost in the memory of our predecessors. Only, most poor sounding records, survived. It is very important that people research the past of the jazz history, like a group of Dutch musicians, who started a few years ago a project to transcribe all the Laurel and Hardy film music fragments and played them with their retro-band, the Beau Hunk Orchestra.
I found a film fragment, most jazz-cats will like, but even please-no-jazz-for-me cats will love to see. The music is by the Beau Hunks Orchestra.

These men, Gert-Jan Blom, Robert Veen, Ronald Jansen Heijtmajer, to name some members of that band, went to the States to find the sources that have survived of long-forgotten music of the 1920s and 1930s. Their projects of Paul Whiteman's arranger Ferde Grofé, Raymond Scott and Al Gallodoro come to mind. Enjoy a film fragment with the music of Raymond Scott, played in The Metropole Orchestra - Beau Hunks Saxtette album The Chesterfield Arrangements. The tune they play is titled Powerhouse.

This summer they made a CD, titled Rhythm is Our Business with their Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Orchestra ( in fact The Beau Hunk Orchestra ) that reproduced the original arrangements of this great big band of the 1930s; music, now almost forgotten and most of the times too difficult to play for an ordinary big band as the original arrangements are no longer in stock and hard to play.
I love to congratulate Robert, Leo, David, Hans, Ronald, Menno, Joep, Ellister, Marcel, Erik, Arend, Chris, Cornell, Ton, Joep, Books and the Peeters Sisters and everybody involved with this project, with this great production. Thanks to their research, the past is moving up to the future and even young people can enjoy this music now, easily available on modern sound recording mediums.
Listen to the original Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra playing Nagasaki.

This fragment is part of a larger drawing used for the Beau Hunks release with the so-called The Beau Hunks Saxophone Soctette, refering to the Paul Whiteman sax section. Who made this illustration? Send your answers to keepswinging@live.nl .

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Charlie who? Charlie Parker. Never heard of that guy!
