Last evening, while doing the dishes, I played myself the CD Quand refleuriront les lias blancs? by Henri Crolla. What a great guitar player !! This man deserves more recognition ! 
I was fascinated by one of the tunes, that was played by Crola. I had heard that swinging tune before, but didn't know where. The tune was titled Je cherche aprés Titine. Then suddenly the penny dropped: it was the nonsense song in Charles Chaplin's film Modern Times .
Sometimes ago I bought myself a bunch of beautiful restored Charles Chaplin films ( The Chaplin Collection by MK2), so I enjoyed some of his classics, like The Kid, The Great Dictator, Modern Times, Lime Light, The Circus and now I'm halfway The Gold Rush. One of the highlights of the film Modern Times ( it has a lot of beautiful scenes) is when Chaplin performes the song Titine, Je cheche apres Titine, but lost the words while dancing. 
The song was composed by Leo Daniderff in 1917 and the words are by Bertel-Maubon. It has been recorded by Jacques Helian ( 1952), Yves Montand (1959) and Jacques Brel (1964).
This scene has inspired others and I found two more fragments where you can enjoy some modern rap musicians who use this tune and a young gifted boy who is inspired by Chaplin himself. Enjoy it !!

Gisteravond, onder de afwas, heb ik een CD opgezet, getiteld Quand refleuriront les lias blancs? door Henri Crolla. Een Franse gitarist, die veel meer aandacht verdient. Het swingt de pan uit !! Ik raakte gefascineerd door één van de nummers die hij speelde. Ik kende het, maar kon het niet plaatsen. De titel was volgens de CD: Je cherche aprés Titine. Toen viel plotseling het kwartje - dat was het nummer, dat Charles Chaplin moest zingen in de film Modern Times.
Een tijdje geleden kocht ik een stapel DVDs met schitterend gerestaureerde Charles Chaplin films ( The Chaplin Collection - MK2), dus heb ik de afgelopen maanden genoten van de filmklassiekers van Chaplin. Achtereenvolgens heb ik naar The Kid, The Great Dictator, Modern Times, City Lights en The Circus gekeken en nu zit ik halverwege The Gold Rush. Eén van de hoogtepunten in Modern Times ( de film bestaat uit louter hoogtepunten als je 't mij vraagt) is de scene waarin Charles Chaplin in een zaal vol mensen het liedje Titine, Je cheche apres Titine moet zingen, maar de tekst al dansend kwijt raakt. Het nummer is gecomponeerd en geschreven door het duo Leo Daniderff en Bertel-Maubon in 1917. Het is op de plaat gezet door Jacques Helian ( 1952), Yves Montand (1959) en Jacques Brel ( 1964) om er een paar te noemen. Chaplin's versie is bijzonder: Voordat Chaplin op moet heeft hij de woorden op zijn manchet geschreven, die, zoals je wellicht weet, in de dertiger jaren als losse insteekstukken gebruikt werden. Een overhemd zoals we dat nu kennen werd nog niet gebruikt - kragen en manchetten waren meest nep. Als hij al dansend opkomt vliegt de manchet met de tekst ( Je cherche après Titine, Titine, oh ! Titine ! Je cherche après Titine et ne la trouve pas. Je cherche après Titine, Titine, oh ! Titine ! Je cherche après Titine et ne la trouve pas) het publiek in en moet hij, al improviserend, zijn optreden zien te redden. Hij verzint dan zelf woorden ( Se Bella Giu Satoreje Notre So Caforeje Notre Si Cavoreje La Tu La Ti La Twah ) wat leidt tot een hilarisch optreden.
Deze scene heeft al heel wat mensen geinspireerd. Ik wil jullie er twee laten zien - één bevat een moderne rap uitvoering, die gebasseerd is op dit lied en in het tweede fragment zien we een jongetje, dat barst van de talenten, die Chaplin imiteert. Genieten dus !!

Je cherche après Titine et ne la trouve pas Je cherche après Titine, Titine, oh ! Titine ! Je cherche après Titine et ne la trouve pas) as his cuff is thrown away in the audience. He has to improvise in a bogus language ( Se Bella Giu Satoreje Notre So Caforeje Notre Si Cavoreje La Tu La Ti La Twah ).
