De Nazaten and James Carter: A great mix of two music cultures

DE NAZATEN and JAMES CARTER
For Now: A great mix of two music cultures.

De Nazaten en James Carter: Een geslaagde mix van twee muziekstromingen (Nederlands) De Nazaten and James Carter: A great mix of two music cultures (English)

Recently the Dutch / Surinamese group De Nazaten released its second album featuring saxophonist James Carter. This album was recorded at a studio recording session in Germany (Osnabrück), although, as the liner notes say, playing live is always better according to De Nazaten. And that's true - De Nazaten is a band you should see and hear live in concert, but this record, entitled For Now, will inspire you to tap your toes or swing your feet.... I'm sure! My first impression, when I heard its opening tune Pasportica allochtonica I had to move my feet and it remembered me to the music of New Orleans, especially the contemporary brass bands, like the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

The Dutch / Surinamese band De Nazaten, ten years ago also known as De Nazaten van Prins Hendrik, features Robby Alberga on guitar, Klaas Hekman on saxes and flute, Carlo Ulrichi Hoop on (Surinamese) percussion, Keimpe De Jong on saxes, Michael Simon on trumpet, Patrick Votrian on trombone and sousaphone, Gregory Kranenburg on snare drums and Chris Semmoh on skratyi and surinamese percussion.
The US saxophone player, James Carter, who joined this popular Surinamese band before in a tour, plays his baritone saxophone.

The band was founded in the 1990s and named themselves De Nazaten van Prins Hendrik, Purveyors of Bastard Music to his Majesty. Prince Henry of the Netherlands, Prins Hendrik for the Dutch, was the husband of the late Dutch queen Wilhelmina, who seemed to have had several illegitimate childs. The source of the music of De Nazaten van Prins Hendrik is not always clear too, like the Nazaten, the offsprings of the prince. That's how it got its name. Since 2000 the band labels itself as De Nazaten.
De Nazaten and James Carter: For Now. ( cover snapshot: Klaas Hekman)
The music played by the band is called Kaseko. This music style was developed in Surinam as a mix of African, European and American music styles.

James Carter (alto sax) (Middelburg - 2007) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)
It developed in the 1930s out of the music played by Surinamese brass bands, like Bigi Pokoe and became popular in The Netherlands in the 1970s by Surinamese expatriates. Its first album in which James Carter cooperated was entiteled Skratyology, a word which illustrates the connection between the two music styles mixed in this band: Kaseko ( the skratyi is a Surinamese percussion instrument used in Kaseko) and Jazz ( Ornithology is a well known Charlie Parker jazz composition). For James Carter, who can play all types of saxophones, but only plays the baritone saxophone in this album with De Nazaten, Jazz and Kazeko have a lot in common and when you listen to the music you will learn that Carter is in his elements.
De Nazaten (photo courtesy Joke Schot)
The album contains six tracks and I realy like the opening tune Pasportica allochtonica, with a great sousaphone bounce by Patrick Votrian and the tune Carter Kaseko, a composition by one of the best known Surinamese flute players and jazz composers Ronald Snijders. I found a fragment where the De Nazaten and James Carter play this tune at an informal meeting in the centre of Rotterdam, August 2010: Carter Kaseko.

The tune When Copy Meets Bu has a great opener by Carlo Ulrich Hoop on conga and Klaas Hekman on flute and the tune Amerindian Connection brings you right into a Surinamese party with a great introduction on guitar, flute and perussion. Great stuff ...........

But few jazz fans will dislike this kind of music, a mix of Jazz and World Music. I hope to listen to its first album, Skratyology, once. The records of De Nazaten can be ordered at
its website. For Now: A must-have ......

I believe that the snapshot used on the cover of the album For Now by the De Nazaten & James Carter expresses the mix of music styles in a great way: rhythmical Surinamese kaseko and the swinging baritone saxophone by jazz giant James Carter.
A great combination: James Carter and De Nazaten. This is their second album together But few people will dislike these merry sounds which encourage to dance ..... Keep Swinging is always searching for music that surprises and For Now seems to be one of it ....:De Nazaten and James Carter: A great mix of two music cultures.

De Nazaten en James Carter: Een geslaagde mix van twee muziekstromingen (Nederlands) De Nazaten and James Carter: A great mix of two music cultures (English)

De Nazaten & James Carter: For Now. ( hoesfoto: Klaas Hekman)

hun website. For Now:

Gardenias For Lady Day

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Last night I played myself the James Carter album Gardenias for a Lady Day. If you are familiar with the jazz history you know that this record must be dedicated to the late Billie Holiday. On the beautfiul designed cover an image of a gardenia, the type of flower Billie Holiday used to wear in her hair. The musicians on this album are James Carter on all kinds of saxophones and clarinets, John Hicks at the piano, Peter Washington on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. Added is a string ensemble, and if you know my preferences you know that I don't like that in jazz.
Charlie Parker with Strings - Chet Baker with Strings - Roy Hargrove with Strings - Shirley Horn with Strings. It seems that every self-respecting musician wants to create a record .... with Strings. It is true, that Charlie Parker with Strings is a very memorable album, I guess he was a trendsetter, but in my opinion this kind of albums are mutilated by a syrupy sound blanket to popularize the music and raise the sales figures. When you make a tribute album, like this one about Billie Holiday, there are two possibilities. You can make an album that copies the music of Billie Holiday note by note; play her music and invitate a singer with a voice marked by an unhealthy style of life ( like the voice of Madeleine Peyroux?) or, second, play her repertoire and use the theme as a steppingstone for your album. That's the way James Carter did it. The tracklist contains eight (Super Audio) or ten ( regular audio) tunes ( this depends on your audio-equipment) sung by Billie Holiday, or songs Billie should have liked. Miche Braden sings on some of the tracks, but her voice doesn't sound like Billie's and James Carter doesn't sound like Billie's accompanists Lester Young or Ben Webster.

I heard James Carter three times live in concert and my appreciation for his music is growing - he is a great saxophone player, for sure. The concert at the Northsea Jazz Festival, in front of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and his appearance at the International Jazz Festival in Middelburg, (southwest part of The Netherlands), last month, were some highlights. I like his album Jurassic Classics, recorded in the early 1990s, which expresses the fanciful creative way of Carter's playing, which I don't find on this Gardenias for Lady Day album. One tune, I think it's Billie's best, is Strange Fruit, is played in a great way. It expresses the desperation of the subject and James Carter gives it a overwhelming free jazzblast, Pharoah Sanders would love, but I can imagine that the lovers of a syrupy arranged mainstream jazz ( they exist !!) won't appreciate it.

Gisteravond zat het album Gardenias for a Lady Day van James Carter in mijn CD-speler.
Charlie Parker with Strings - Chet Baker with Strings - Roy Hargrove with Strings - Shirley horn with Strings.

Jazz Festival Middelburg

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

The International Jazz Festival in Middelburg ( southwest part of The Netherlands), held for the first time in a new concept, had two great names in jazz scedulded on Sunday 27th of May 2007 at the inner court of the abbey in the centre of the ancient city. First of all the Philip Catherine Trio, featuring Philip Catherine on guitar, Philippe Aerts on bass and Mimi Verderame on percussion.
Philip Catherine showed that he is a great guitar player easily fascinating the audience, that came to this concert. Philip Aerts and Italian born Mimi Verderame accompanied Philip on bass and drums. In some solo pieces, Philip played with a pre-recorded accompanist on accoustic guitar ( himself ) some great duos. It was a pity, that only one hundred people joined this great concert, maybe due to the fact that the concert started at an early hour in the evening ( 7 o'clock ) or thanks to the weather forecast. Thanks Philip for this concert !!
James Carter started his concert at half past nine in the evening and found a few hundred jazz fans in front of the stage. He opened the show with a killer diller of fast notes and free-jazz licks, but turned out to be an entertaining musician who could captivate his audience with a well-considered show. The two regular accompanists of his Organ Trio are Gerald Gibbs on the hammond and Leonard King at the drums, two skilled musicians.
Especially Leonard King got the opportunity to spread out lenghtly solos on his groovy instrument, that is still very popular in jazz. James Carter left a deep impression on me playing his alto and tenor saxophones. Using circular breathing, slap tongue techniques, some times growling like a monster, but also as soft that the audience was annoyed at people talking on the far end of the court.
James Carter and his Organ Trio visibly enjoyed playing on this cosy medieval court and closed the concert with a playful encore starting with scales and dated tunes like Down By The River Side. The audience enjoyed this concert. Although the weather forecast talked about rain and showers, the weather gods were well-inclined towards the audience and the organisationus, but, sorry Tante Tuffie, the court wasn't jam-packed as we hoped, although the program and the organisation deserved so.

Down By The River Side.

James Carter

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

The
International Jazz Festival in Middelburg (south-west part of the Netherlands), has been completely renewed this year. It is sceduled from the 26th up to the 28th of May 2007. Among the artists that will be perform are some of my favorites. James Quarter is one of them.

James Carter is one of the so-called Young Lions, young, ambitious and energetic. Other musicians that belong to that group are Nicolas Payton and of course Roy Hargrove, to name some trumpet players and Branford Marsalis and Joshua Redman as some examples that play reeds. As James Carter is one of the performers at the festival I played one of his records from my collection, titled Jurassic Classics.
James Carter was born in Detroit January 1969 and started into the jazz scene in the early 1990s; a remarkable saxophone player, who switched easily from the mainstream style into the contemporary free-styles. He plays his saxophones easily with a very strong sound, using extreme difficult techniques like circular breathing and slaptonguing. When he was a kid he played in the unique Detroit band Bird-Trane-Sco-Bow, a reference to the great jazz players and he became a sought-after player for local and even national groups. So he played as a teenager with Wynton Marsalis, Lester Bowie and the Julius Hemphill Sextet. As a young adult he formed his own group with Craig Taborn at the piano, a raising star on the keyboard in the Detroit area. In this group James Carter shows that he can play and that he has knowledge of history, using the language of (recent ) jazz musicians
like David Murray, Ben Webster and Gene Ammons. Another aspect of James Carter's playing is that he uses the complete range of saxophones, from soprano to baritone and bass saxophone, but also the bass and contrabass clarinet and bass flute. He has a huge collection at home of reed instruments. It is no coincidence that one of the fragments below I want to share with you is Carter who plays the bass saxophone.

The 1994 CD, James Carter Quartet - Jurassic Classics ( DIW/Columbia 478612 ) is his second one. The title of the album, of course, refers to the film Jurassic Park, in which DNA experiments recreated dinosaurs for an amusement park. In this album James Carter recreates the classic tunes like Take The A Train, Out of Nowhere, Epistrophy, Ask Me Now, Sandu and Oleo. If I had to make a choice I'd prefer Equinox with an extreme solo, that shows all the aspects of Carter's music skills.
Last year I heard James Carter twice; the first time in the
Chassé Theater in Breda ( not his best concert ) and at the Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. One of the fragments I love to share with you is from that concert.

Love to share with you, the fragments I mentioned before and a concert with the other Young Lion, Joshua Redman at Carnegy Hall. Hope you like it and don't forget to join the concert. It is an unique opportunity to hear this great sax player in Middelburg.
