The International Jazz Festival in Middelburg (south-west part of the Netherlands), has been completely renewed this year. It is sceduled from the 26th up to the 28th of May 2007. Among the artists that will be perform are some of my favorites. James Quarter is one of them.

James Carter is one of the so-called Young Lions, young, ambitious and energetic. Other musicians that belong to that group are Nicolas Payton and of course Roy Hargrove, to name some trumpet players and Branford Marsalis and Joshua Redman as some examples that play reeds. As James Carter is one of the performers at the festival I played one of his records from my collection, titled Jurassic Classics.
James Carter was born in Detroit January 1969 and started into the jazz scene in the early 1990s; a remarkable saxophone player, who switched easily from the mainstream style into the contemporary free-styles. He plays his saxophones easily with a very strong sound, using extreme difficult techniques like circular breathing and slaptonguing. When he was a kid he played in the unique Detroit band Bird-Trane-Sco-Bow, a reference to the great jazz players and he became a sought-after player for local and even national groups. So he played as a teenager with Wynton Marsalis, Lester Bowie and the Julius Hemphill Sextet. As a young adult he formed his own group with Craig Taborn at the piano, a raising star on the keyboard in the Detroit area. In this group James Carter shows that he can play and that he has knowledge of history, using the language of (recent ) jazz musicians like David Murray, Ben Webster and Gene Ammons. Another aspect of James Carter's playing is that he uses the complete range of saxophones, from soprano to baritone and bass saxophone, but also the bass and contrabass clarinet and bass flute. He has a huge collection at home of reed instruments. It is no coincidence that one of the fragments below I want to share with you is Carter who plays the bass saxophone.

The 1994 CD, James Carter Quartet - Jurassic Classics ( DIW/Columbia 478612 ) is his second one. The title of the album, of course, refers to the film Jurassic Park, in which DNA experiments recreated dinosaurs for an amusement park. In this album James Carter recreates the classic tunes like Take The A Train, Out of Nowhere, Epistrophy, Ask Me Now, Sandu and Oleo. If I had to make a choice I'd prefer Equinox with an extreme solo, that shows all the aspects of Carter's music skills.
Last year I heard James Carter twice; the first time in the Chassé Theater in Breda ( not his best concert ) and at the Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. One of the fragments I love to share with you is from that concert.

Het Internationaal Jazz Festival in Middelburg is dit jaar helemaal vernieuwd van opzet. Het wordt gehouden van 26 t/m 28 mei 2007. Eén van mijn favoriete artiesten die zondag optreden is James Carter.

James Carter is één van de zogenaamde Young Lions, jong, ambitieus en vol energie. Andere musici die tot deze groep gerekend worden zijn Nicolas Payton en natuurlijk Roy Hargrove, trompettisten en Branford Marsalis en Joshua Redman als een paar voorbeelden van rietspelers. Aangezien James Carter één van mijn favorieten is tijdens dit festival ben ik de platenkast in gedoken en heb ik zijn tweede album Jurassic Classics opgezet.
James Carter werd geboren op 3 januari 1969 in Detroit en meldde zich in de jazzscene begin jaren negentig; een opvallende saxofonist, die met alle gemak schakelde van mainstream naar experimentele muziek, die houdt van uitersten. Hij bespeelt zijn saxofoon met een opvallend krachtige toon gebruikmakend van moeilijke technieken zoals circular breathing ( een techniek waarbij de speler lange noten kan blazen) en slaptonguing ( een techniek, al gebruikt in de jaren twintig waarbij de toon kort en hard met een knal aangezet wordt.). Als tiener speelde hij met de groep Bird-Trane-Sco-Bow, een naam die verwijst naar de Groten der Jazz. Hij werd een veel gevraagd speler, niet alleen in lokale bandjes mar ook op nationaal vlak. Zo speelde hij als tiener bij Wynton Marsalis, Lester Bowie en het Julius Hemphill Sextet. Al vroeg richtte hij zijn eigen groep op met Craig Taborn op de piano, een veelbelovende pianist in Detroit en omgeving. In zijn eigen groep liet hij horen dat hij kon spelen en bovendien, dat hij goed geluisterd had naar saxofonisten uit het (recente) verleden, zoals David Murray, Ben Webster en Gene Ammons. Een ander aspect van Carter's spel is zijn gebruik van alle saxen die er bestaan; van sopraan tot bariton- en zelfs bassax. Ook bespeelt hij de bas en contrabas-klarinet en de basfluit. Thuis heeft hij een grote verzameling met rietinstrumenten, waarmee hij graag experimenteert. Het is dan ook niet toevallig dat ik bij de filmfragmenten die ik hieronder heb gepost een fragment heb zitten waar hij de bassaxofoon bespeelt. De CD, James Carter Quartet - Jurassic Classics ( DIW/Columbia 478612 ) uit 1994 is zijn tweede. De titel van de plaat refereert natuurlijk aan de film Jurassic Park, waarin DNA experimenten de wereld van de dinosauriërs in een pretpark doet herleven. Op deze CD doet James Carter hetzelfde - hij laat jazzklassiekers als Take The A Train, Out of Nowhere, Epistrophy, Ask Me Now, Sandu en Oleo herleven - geen copiën maar eigen interpretaties. Als ik een keus moest maken zou ik Equinox laten horen met daarin een waanzinnige solo van Carter.

Vorig jaar hoorde ik James Carter twee keer spelen; eenmaal in het Chassé Theater in Breda ( niet zijn beste concert) en op het Northsea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam met het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Eén van de filmfragmenten is gemaakt tijdens dit optreden.

Ik vind het leuk om de twee eerder genoemde filmfragmenten te laten zien en bovendien één met Joshua Redman, die andere grote tenorsaxofonist tijdens een concert in Carnegy Hall.

Vergeet niet om zondag naar Middelburg te komen, want zo'n kans krijg je niet snel opnieuw in Middelburg.
