In the history of jazz there are a lot of names that are still remembered. Some became icons of Jazz; others are only known by a limited group of admirers. But few were as neglected and forgotten like Oscar Alemán, although he was a legendary guitar player in the 1930s. I discovered Oscar Alemán and his music thanks to some friends in Latin-American music and the documentary about Oscar Alemán: Una vida con swing. ( Gani Jakupi)

Last month we commemorated the fact that Oscar Alemán was born 100 years ago in Machagai in Northern Argentina. This event was celebrated with concerts by Jorgelina Alemán and friends, the granddaughter of Oscar in Machagai and Resistencia and the local authorities named a street and an arts centre to Oscar. In Buenos Aires the Hot Club de Boedo, directed by Waldo Fonseca, gave a concert titled Centenario del Nacimiento de Oscar Alemán ( = The 100th day of birth of Oscar Alemán) in the Asociación de Fomento y Biblioteca Popular General Alvear. In the Doctor Jazz Magazine, the leading Dutch classic jazz magazine, I published (in Dutch) a small biography, titled Oscar Alemán (1909-2009). In this Oscar Aleman blog and the Keep Swinging blog some contribution were published and you can find a survey of these articles about Oscar Alemán: 100 Años "Una Leyenda" here. A poor result to commemorate this great maestro del guitara, master of the guitar, this invisible king. Last month the Kosovo born / Spanish artist Gani Jakupi published a comic book titled Le Roi invisible, subtitled Un portrait d' Oscar Alemán.

Last month the Kosovo born / Spanish artist Gani Jakupi published a comic book titled Le Roi invisible, subtitled Un portrait d' Oscar Alemán. This hardbound covered book tells in 64 coloured pages the story of Oscar Alemán.

 Gani Jakupi was born 53 years ago in Kosovo, now an in depended country, but then part of Serbia. He settled in Barcelona and became a comic book script writer in 1991 for the comic book series the Matador designed by Hugues Labiano. He developed himself in a many-sided artist being an illustrator, designer, journalist, photographer, writer (of a novel titled Thanksgiving Day, short stories, collections of texts of political analysis), translator, composer and even a jazz musician. Since 2005 he loves to make comics about ignored and forgotten (jazz) musicians and artist, like Tete Montoliu, the blind born Spanish jazz piano player who passed way in the summer of 1997. I heard Tete in concert February 1980 in a concert accompanied by the Trio Intrioduction at The Doelen in Rotterdam. The book is titled Montoliu Plays Tete and contains two CDs with recordings of this great piano player. It would be great to review this book in the Keep Swinging blog later. Other forgotten artists snatched from oblivion are Vinícius de Moraes, a Brazilian poet and composer and journalist, Pete Seeger, an American folk singer and Benny Moré, the great Cuban vocalist. Oscar Alemán, the invisible king, le Roi invisible, is well-matched in this diverse range of artists.

The book opens with a group of journalists and fans waiting for the arrival of Duke Ellington at the Ezeiza airport of Buenos Aires. When he enters the terminal he is introduced to a journalist, Mr. Herrera, who wants to interview him. Un journaliste? Ellington asks, Excellent ! Demande-lui des nouvelles d'Oscar ( = A journalist? Great! Do you have news from Oscar?) and the journalist looks on in amazement and asks: Oscar? Quel Oscar? (= Oscar? Which Oscar?) Oscar Alemán, le guitariste? (= De gitarist Oscar Alemán?) Of course ! LE guitariste. Vous voudrez bien le chercher pour moi, n' est-ce pas? ( = Of course, THE great guitar player. Please, find him for me, would you?). This well known anecdote told about Duke Ellington's admiration for Oscar Alemán is the thread running through the book.

In the book the story of Oscar's life is told. About growing up in the streets of Santos (Brasil), his first own earned cavaquinho, his cooperation with Gastão Bueno Lobo, the tour with Harry Fleming's revue Hello Jazz to Europe, his years with Josephine Baker, his meetings with Django Reinhardt and Duke Ellington in the 1930s in Paris, the German occupation in Paris and his escape to Argentina; the successes in the dance halls in Buenos Aires with Hernán Oliva.

Duke Ellington had heard Oscar playing and loved to have him in his band for a tour in the US. Josephine didn't want Oscar to leave from her Baker Boys, her band in the revue. Mais ... qu'est-ce que je dis la? (= Listen what I say .......) Ou est-ce que je peux trouver un autre musicien capable de chanter en Francais, Anglais, espagnol, bresilien ... jouer de la guitare, du cavaquinho, des congas, de la pandereta .. et tout instrument de percussion que tu mets devant lui, qui soit noir et tellement chou? (= Where do I find another musician like him, that can sing in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese, can play the guitar, the cavaquingho, the congas and pandeiro and any other percussion instrument you put in front of him, such a dark sweetheart?).

The story ends with the most emotional moment in Oscar's life, the suicide of his friend and companion Gastão Bueno Lobo, after Oscar's move to Josephine Baker's band.

In his book, Gani Jakupi, follows the information and stories as told by Hernan Gaffet in his great Oscar Alemán documentary La Vida con Swing; the documentary that stimulated him to make this book. His drawings are realistic, and Gani used old photos that are left from Oscar Alemán's scrap book to stay close to the reality.

A great comic book, an easy accessible biography, well designed, which could reach a new audience for Oscar's musical legacy. It would be great if this book could be released in a Spanish and English translation too.

In de geschiedenis van de Jazz is er geen gebrek aan verering van grote namen. Sommigen is het gelukt om in het collectief geheugen van de mensen te blijven hangen, om iconen te worden van de muziek; anderen zijn alleen bekend gebleven bij een kleine groep liefhebbers. Er zijn er maar weinig die in zo korte tijd van succes naar vergetelheid gegleden zijn als Oscar Alemán. Deze artist is eigenlijk volledig onzichtbaar geworden; geheel verdwenen uit het geheugen van de jazzfans, hoewel hij in de jaren dertig furore maakte met zijn gitaarspel. Ik ontdekte Oscar Alemán en zijn muziek dankzij relaties in de Latijns Amerikaanse muziek en de documentaire over Oscar Alemán: Una vida con swing. ( Gani Jakupi)

Afgelopen maand werd het feit herdacht, dat Oscar Alemán 100 jaar geleden geboren werd in het plaatsje Machagai in het noorden van Argentinië. Dit feit werd herdacht met een nieuwe straatnaam, een cultureel centrum kreeg Oscar’s naam en concerten in Machagai en Resistencia door kleindochter Jorgelina Alemán, een gevierd jazzzangeres. In Buenos Aires trad de Hot Club de Boedo op in een concert bestempeld als Centenario del Nacimiento de Oscar Alemán ( = De 100ste geboortedag van Oscar Alemán) in het Asociación de Fomento y Biblioteca Popular General Alvear. In het Doctor Jazz Magazine, het belangrijkste kwartaalblad in West Europa voor traditionele jazz, verscheen het artikel: Oscar Alemán (1909-2009). In de Oscar Aleman blog en deze Keep Swinging blog verschenen bijdragen over Oscar en je vindt onder aan de bijdrage van vandaag een overzicht van de artikelen over 100 jaar Oscar Alemán: 100 Años "Una Leyenda" . Die paar festiviteiten rond deze herdenking bij elkaar, vormen, als je’t mij vraagt, een mager resultaat. Met recht wordt Oscar Alemán, in een nieuw boek, bestempeld als “de onzichtbare koning”, Le Roi Invisible. ©2009 Gani Jakupi

Afgelopen maand verscheen van de Albanese Kosovaar Gani Jakupi, een artiest, die in Spanje woont, een stripverhaal getiteld Le Roi invisible ( = De onzichtbare koning), met als ondertitel: Un portrait d' Oscar Alemán. (= Een portret van Oscar Alemán).
Dit mooi uitgevoerde stripboek heeft een harde kaft en vertelt in 64 in kleur gedrukte pagina’s het levensverhaal van Oscar Alemán.
 Gani Jakupi werd 53 jaar geleden geboren in Kosovo, nu een onafhankelijk land, maar toen een deel van Servië. Hij vluchtte en ging wonen in Barcelona waar hij in 1991 als scenarioschrijver meewerkte aan een eerste stripverhaal getekend door Hugues Labiano, getiteld “Matador”. Er zouden later nog meer strips in deze serie verschijnen. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot een veelzijdig artiest: illustrator, tekenaar, journalist, ontwerper, fotograaf, schrijver ( hij schreef de roman “Thanksgiving Day”, korte verhalen en essays met politieke analyses), vertaler, componist en als jazzmuzikant. Vanaf 2005 maakt hij zelf stripverhalen over nu helemaal vergeten (jazz) musici zoals de blinde Spaanse pianist Tete Montoliu, die in de zomer van 1997 overleed en nu bij veel jazzliefhebbers onbekend is. Ik hoorde hem tijdens een concert in februari 1980 met het Trio Intrioduction ( Harry Happel piano, Daan Gaillard bas en Fred Krens slagwerk) in De Doelen in Rotterdam. Het boek is getiteld Montoliu Plays Tete en bevat twee CDs met opnamen van Tete. Andere vergeten artiesten, ontrukt aan de vergetelheid zijn de Braziliaanse dichter, componist en journalist Vinícius de Moraes, folksinger Pete Seeger en Benny Moré, de grote Cubaanse zanger; Oscar Alemán past dan ook naadloos in dit rijtje vergeten artiesten.

Het stripboek begint met de aankomst van een vliegtuig op het Ezeiza vliegveld van Buenos Aires. Een groep journalist is in afwachting van de grote Amerikaanse bandleider Duke Ellington. Hij wordt in de aankomsthal verwelkomt door een journalist Mr. Herrera, die hem wil interviewen. Un journaliste? (= Bent u journalist ?) vraagt Ellington: Excellent ! Demande-lui des nouvelles d'Oscar ( = Prima. Heb je nieuws over Oscar?). De journalist kijkt verbaasd. Oscar? Quel Oscar? (= Oscar? Welke Oscar?) Oscar Alemán, le guitariste? (= Oscar Alemán, de gitarist?) Of course ! LE guitariste. (= Natuurlijk DE gitarist) Vous voudrez bien le chercher pour moi, n' est-ce pas? ( = Wil je hem s.v.p. zoeken gaan zoeken voor me!). Deze gebeurtenis vertelt iets over de bewondering voor Oscar Alemán’s gitaarspel, dat de Duke na veertig jaar nog steeds voelde. Deze bewondering van de Duke voor Oscar’s spel loopt als de rode draad door het verhaal.

In het boek komt het hele leven van Oscar Alemán langs: over zijn optredens in het familie bandje Het Moreira Sextet, zijn leven als straatkind in Santos (Brazilië), zijn eerste zelfverdiende cavaquinho, zijn samenwerking met Gastão Bueno Lobo, hun tournee naar Europa met de Harry Fleming’s Hello Jazz revue, zijn jaren bij Josephine Baker, zijn ontmoetingen met Django Reinhardt en Duke Ellington in de jaren dertig in Parijs, de Duitse bezetting van de Frankrijk en zijn ontsnapping naar Argentinië, de successen in zijn eigen land in de danszalen van Buenos Aires met violist Hernán Oliva.

Duke Ellington had Oscar horen spelen, toen hij in de jaren dertig Parijs aan deed en wilde hem hebben voor een tournee door de Verenigde Staten. Dat zag Josephine helemaal niet zitten: Mais ... qu'est-ce que je dis la? (= Luister eens goed wat ik je ga zeggen …..) Ou est-ce que je peux trouver un autre musicien capable de chanter en Francais, Anglais, Espagnol, Bresilien ... jouer de la guitare, du cavaquingho, des congas, de la pandereta .. et tout instrument de percussion que tu mets devant lui, qui soit noir et tellement chou? ( = Waar vind ik net zo’n muzikant als Oscar, die kan zingen in het Frans, Engels, Spaans en Portugees, die gitaar kan spelen, en de cavaquingho, de conga’s en pandeiro ( = een Braziliaanse trom) en alle andere ritme-instrumenten, die je voor zijn neus zet; zo'n donker schatje....?).

Het verhaal eindigt met één van de meest emotionele momenten in Oscar’s leven, namelijk de zelfmoord van zijn vriend Gastão. Als hij gevraagd wordt om te komen spelen bij Josephine Baker, moet hij zijn compagnon Gastão Bueno Lobo achterlaten in Madrid. Hij gaat terug naar Brazilie waar hij vandaan kwam en pleegde daar zelfmoord. Deze zelfmoord heeft Oscar zich altijd zelf persoonlijk aangetrokken ……….

In het boek volgt Gani Jakupi nauwgezet de informatie, zoals die gegeven wordt in de prachtige documentaire La vida con swing ( = Een Leven vol Swing), gemaakt door Hernan Gaffet. Deze indringende documentaire zette hem aan tot het tekenen van dit boek. Zijn tekeningen zijn natuurgetrouw en hij gebruikte originele foto’s om de werkelijkheid geen geweld aan te doen.
Een prachtig uitgevoerd stripverhaal is het geworden, een laagdrempelige biografie over een groot artiest; hopelijk bereikt het een nieuwe groep liefhebbers. Het is jammer voor ons, dat het boek geschreven is in het Frans; ik hoop dan ook dat er snel een Engelse en een Spaanse ( en wie weet, een Nederlandse ………..?) versie mogen verschijnen.
