Three-time Latin Grammy nominee releases latest album Current. Tired and tested in Hermeto Pascoal's bands Hans Koert
Jovino Santos Neto, Brazilian born piano player, recently released a new studio recording with his Quinteto entitled Current. Born in September 1954 in Rio the Janeiro, he started to play his sisters piano as a child and became fascinated by the popular music of his times, like the British Rock band Yes and King Crimson, but he was also inspired by classic composers like Bach ....... He left for Canada in to study Biology at the Montreal University. He became fascinated by jazz-rock music from bands like Weather Report and Chick Corea and became part of several rock bands in Canada. But the music of his native country was still very important for him.
Jovino Santos Neto ( photo courtesy: Daniel Sheehan) He returned to Brazil to graduate and met Brazilian composers, like the great Hermeto Pascoal, a remarkable person being an albino with a flowing white beard and long, luminous white hair. His performances on stage must have been remarkable, and Howard Mandel described him as a pan-global a leader as Sun Ra and as surefooted an individualist as Roland Kirk. Neto played with him and was inspired by his music. Maybe some of you may remember that Hermeto was part of Miles Davis recording band for the LP Live-Evil in which he played the piano, but also inspired great jazz men like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and more of those Jazz-Rock heroes of the 1970s and 80s.
Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto: Current (AM1068)(Graphic Design: Maria Camillo) Jovino Neto returned to Brazil to finish his study and to work at the Research Institute of the Amazon, where he found a job, but soon he was invited by Hermeto Pascoal, who lived next door, to join his band ........ and so he became a professional musician and cancelled his job at the Institute. Neto played for 15 years in Pascoal's band before he decided to go his own way ........I had to deal with more and more of the daily grind of running the band on the road, Jovino told Chip Boaz for the Latin Jazz Corner:Those responsibilities were becoming more and more me. I did a good job, but on the other hand, that was taking a toll on the music side. I was not having the time to practice and grow.
Jovino Santos Neto ( photo courtesy: Mario Camillo) He started a study in conducting at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. He became a member of Fourth World of Airto Moreira and founded his own Quinteto, featuring Chuck Deardorf on bass, Mark Ivester on drums, Harvey Wainapel on reeds and Jeff Busch on percussion. This Quinteto recorded several albums and Neto is still searching the roots of his music, which are in his motherland Brazil. I'm still anxiuous to have the possibility to listen to some of his previous albums Veja Om Som ( a series of duets) and Alma do nordeste, music from the north-eastern part of Brazil, which inspired Neto.
Jovino Santos Neto's latest album, entitled Current contains nine tracks, all own compositions. It's hard to point to some of the tracks that I liked best, but tunes like Vivendo no Presente, Outras Praias and Matraca should be part of such a list. It's a great album played by a solid band. Chuck Deardorf, double bass player, toured and recorded with Bud Shank, George Cables, Art Farmer, Chet Baker, Pete Christlieb, Monty Alexander, guitarist Larry Coryell and dozens of other well known. Drummer Mark Ivester played with Kenny Werner, Larry Coryell and Michael Brecker.

Ik moet toegeven, dat Braziliaanse muziek me nooit erg geboeid heeft. Ondanks dat er genoeg raakvlak met de zwarte muziek was, hebben musici als Marcus Vinicus, Caetano Veloso of Antonio Carlos Jobim me nooit gefascineerd. De enige die mijn voet nog wel eens kon laten bewegen, was Stan Getz, maar over het algemeen verveelden bossa nova en andere Braziliaanse muziekstijlen me. Totdat op een dag een vriend van me, Flavio, me op het spoor zette van Oscar Alemán. Hij had voor mijn dochter een cd-tje meegebracht, getiteld Oscar Alemán y su conjunto - Con Ritmos de Brasil. Aangezien mijn dochter toen nog maar één jaar was en ze dus nog niet overweg kon met het schijfje, heb ik de plaat voor haar gedraaid ........ en raakte ik geboeid door deze muziek. Ik beloofde mezelf wat tijd te gunnen meer te leren over deze gitarist en er over te schrijven op mijn blog. Voor mij opende Oscar Alemán, hoewel een Argentijn en dus een landgenoot, de deur voor de Braziliaanse muziek. Is dat niet bijzonder? Negra de Cabello Duro - Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing. (Odeon 74037) (7 sep. 1943)(bron: Oscar Alemán Discography - Hans Koert) Op de cd, uitgebracht in 2002 door EMI-Odéon Argentina (7243 5 41686), getiteld Oscar Alemán y su conjunto - Con Ritmos de Brasil, zijn de opnamen gemixt. Het lijkt me daarom handig de bespreking van de opnamen in tweeën te splitsen, al naar gelang de periode waarin ze opgenomen zijn. Tussen 1943 en 1947, werd Oscar begeleid door zijn Quinteto de Swing, dat in feite uit zes musici bestond en tussen 1951 en 1957, door zijn Orquesta de Jazz. Oscar Alemán promotiefoto.(jaren vijftig) In de eerste plaats wil ik wijzen op Negra de Cabello Duro, omdat Oscar hier tijdens de eerste minuten van het nummer laat horen wat een geweldig gitarist hij is. Bovendien zingt hij. Tico Tico No Fuba is een instrumentaal nummer in de Milonga-stijl, waarin hij al zijn virtuositeit in zijn gitaarspel steekt. In deze twee nummers uit 1943 hoor je licks, die je ook bij Django Reinhardt hoort. De eerste helft van het nummer Yo Vi Un Leon wordt in het Portuguees gezongen en de tweede helft in het Spaans. Oscar Alemán laat hier horen dat hij kan swingen. Melancolía is een instrumentale samba die ietwat geheimzinnig klinkt. In Apanhei Te Cavaquinho kom je een fraaie wisselwerking tegen tussen de verschillende instrumenten zoals de gitaar en de piano. In Vanidosa speelt de viool de hoofdrol, zodat het nummer herinnert aan de opnamen van Django Reinhardt en Stephane Grappelli. Vanidosa - Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing (Odeon 22309) (24Jan. 1947)(Bron: Oscar Alemán Discography - Hans Koert) Het tweede deel van de plaat bevat nog meer baiones en samba's. Delicado, (1951) is een echt instrumentaal gitaarnummer en Pa pa pa, geschreven door Oscar Alemán, is één van de mooiste van deze plaat. In het nummer Mi casita pequeña ontmoet de samba de bolero, en spelen de strijkers, ...... with stringswas een hype in de jaren vijftig, een belangrijkere rol. Saudades is weer een instrumentaal nummer waarin van het begin tot het eind Oscar zich uitleeft op de gitaar.Eu Vi Um Leâo - Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing ( Odéon 45973) ( 27 juni 1944)( Bron: Oscar Alemán Discography - Hans Koert ) Eén van de drie compostieis van Alemán op deze verzamel-cd, deze keer samen metJosé Romero, is Mi amigo. In deze samba uit 1954 speelt Oscar voor het eerst de elektrisch versterkte gitaar. Yo soy de Río, is weer een samba, maar deze keer wat feestelijker en Oscar speelt ook hier op de elektrische gitaar, die wat vervormt als hij het tempo opvoert. Tenslotte, last but not least, het nummerDedos Duros, eenchoronummer, gecomponeerd door Alemán. Het begint met de strijkers, die een stevig tapijt van klanken neerleggen, waartussen door de gitaar wat noten probeert te plaatsen - halverwege worden de rollen finaal omgekeerd en deelt Oscar op de gitaar de lakens uit. In the long story of choro there are several pieces that have become immortal compositions and continue to challenge and be a part of the standard repertoire interpreted and performed by new generations of choro groups. Among these compositions belongs a piece by the great female choro composer, Chiquinha Gonzaga - her Corta-jaca from 1897 became an instant success with the public and other choroães and has since been performed and recorded by numerous artists devoting their chops to choro. Originally a piece for solo piano, the Corta-jaca some times also is known as Gaucho, as the music is inspired by and incorporates elements of a dance style associated with rural gauchos dancing. - I found a solo piano reading of Corta-jaca, here performed by a female pianist, enjoy it!
Francisca Edwiges Neves Gonzaga, known as Chiquinha, (1847-1935) was the first important female composer and performer of popular music in Brazil. Gonzaga was the first female to be allowed attending the social and musical fraternity of choro musicians, helped by her friend Joaquin Calado - the first composer of music in the choro style. Chiquinha started composing in the choro style too and had success with the piece Corta-jaca, as mentioned above. Later she would be engaged in composing and arranging music for the popular theater. By the time of her death in 1935, her musical works included a great number of theater pieces as well as sacred music, besides popular music including maxixes, marches and choros. Gefeliciteerd ! Vandaag vieren we de 160st geboortedag van Chiquinha Gonzaga, een componiste en muzikante, die gerekend mag worden als één van de grondleggers van de Choromuziek in Brazilië. Joergen L. (Denemarken), expert in deze muzieksoort, schreef de bijdrage voor vandaag.
In de lange geschiedenis van de choromuziek zijn er verschillende nummers aan te wijzen, die we kunnen rekenen tot de onsterfelijke composities; titels die in de loop der tijd tot het standaardrepertoire van de choromuziek zijn gaan behoren. Eén van die nummers is geschreven door een vrouwelijke chorocomponist, Chiquinha Gonzaga - haar "Corta-jaca" uit 1897 werd een ongekend succes bij het publiek en andere choroãs, choroartiesten hebben sinds dat succes het nummer uitgevoerd en op de plaat gezet. Het nummer Corta-jaca, ook wel bekend als Gaucho was origineel een stuk voor piano. Het werd ook wel Gaucho genoemd aangezien er elemeneten in de compositie zaten die terug te voeren waren op de dansstijl, zoals die op het platteland van Brazilië gebruikelijk waren. Ik vond een filmfragment van een uitvoering op piano van het stuk Corta-jaca.

Chiquinha begon ook choro muziek te componeren en had veel succes met het nummer "Corta-jaca", zoals eerder beschreven. Later ging ze ook muziek componeren en arrangeren voor het volkstheater. Toen ze in 1935 overleed had ze een groot aantal composities op haar naam staan; zowel voor het theater als ook gewijde muziek en populaire muziek zoals maxixes, marsen en choros.
