RITA REYS met het NORTH STATE huisorkest ...

In the 1960s advertisement agencies found a new way to contact households by sending tiny plastic records to introduce new products or services. These records were very light and thin because it was sent by snailmail. These soundies were called in The Netherlands Klankdrukken, which means to the letter "Sound prints"; these records were made by the English Sound for Industry or our own Dutch Sonopresse, based in Rotterdam. North State, a well known brand for cigarettes, tried to tempt mankind to smoke their cigarettes by informing clients to a new kind of package. On the free record well known vocalist Rita Reys, still active, although her ripe age, labeled in those days as Europe's First Lady of Jazz, sings with the North State Huisorkest ( = house orchestra), which was, no doubt about that, the Dutch Swing College Band as its name and picture was on the cover too.

Deze plaat is uitgegeven op de dag dat North State in Nederland in de nieuwe internationale verpakking verkrijgbaar werd gesteld. (= This record was published on the day North State introduces its new international package ). Wij hopen dat deze plaat u evenveel genoegen zal schenken als North State, de zachte geurige Amerikaan. (= We hope you will enjoy this record as much as you like our north State igarette - smooth and fragant American tabacco cigarettes)
During the 1960s promoting cigarettes and the smoking of it, was still accepted. Jazz music and jazz clubs were associated with the smoke of cigarettes, with a heavenly perspiring trumpet player playing a hot solo with a cigarette between his fingers and his eyes closed, concentrated, with the smoke in his eyes. Smoke Get's In Your Eyes was a hit in that kind of clubs. Jazz was not only associated with cigarette smoking, but also with alcohol and drugs, hookers and gamblers; without all those temptations, born in the cities of Sodom and Gomorra ( or New Orleans' Storyville if you like) you could never enjoy Jazz music - you couldn't survive a jazz concert without it- it suggested. Do you remember the cartoon short: Tin Pan Alley Cats? Or my contribution Ain't Misbehavin', about my first introduction to the Fats Waller soundies.

In this Keep Swinging blog I wrote about those soundies - klankdrukken - in previous blogs, like the one simply labeled: Soundsheets. The four tunes on this tiny record were all recorded in The Hague on the last day of July 1963 and are to be found on the well known Philips album: Rita Reys and the Dutch Swing College Band: Jazz Sir That's Our Baby ( Philips 433284PE) (mind the play upon words in the title of the record). The Dutch Swing College Band featured in those days Ray Kaart on trumpet, Dick Kaart on trombone, Peter Schilperoort on the clarinet, Arie Ligthart on banjo and guitar, Bob van Oven on bass and Lu Ssanet ( real name Louis de Lussanet ) on drums. Rita Reys, of course, is doing the vocals. I found a fragment of her singing After You've Gone with the Dutch Swing College Band:

Vandaag terug in de tijd ... ver terug. Een nummer gecomponeerd eind jaren twintig en gespeeld op een zogenaamde pianola, een kruising tussen een piano en een "draaiorgel". Een wat vreemde omschrijving geef ik toe, maar m.b.v. rollen kon men in het begin van de XXste eeuw de piano muziek laten maken, zonder dat men zelf de kunst van het pianospelen onder de knie moest hebben. Deze instrumenten waren toen erg populair en veertig jaar geleden droomde ik al ooit zo'n instrument te bezitten. 't Is er nooit van gekomen.

Ik herinner me, dat een jaar geleden tijdens een rommelmarkt in Nisse, een klein dorpje in de Zak van Zuid Beveland, er zo'n pianola bij opbod verkocht werd. Ik heb geen idee of het ding nog werkte en hoe hij klonk en ik heb ook niet afgewacht wat het ding uiteindelijk opgebracht heeft. Bovendien kan ik wel thuis komen met een paar oude boeken of platen ( of met de zoveelste gramofoon die-het-nog-doet ...), maar moeilijk met een 400 kg. wegende ruimteverslindende pianola in de kofferbak (!).
Luister hoe zo'n pianola klonk en als je wilt kun je zachtjes meezingen - de tekst staat hieronder.

Slim and Slam: a dime a dozen?

SLIM and SLAM: A DIME A DOZEN?

Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart in duo: Slim and Slam, as they labeled themselves, where rather popular in the New York clubs in 1938 and Vocalion made several recordings with this popular duo, known for their nonsensical novelty pieces. Their Flat Foot Floozie with one Floy Joy, became a hit in 1938 ( the Dutch duo Johnny and Jones ( Nol Van Wesel and Max Kannewasser recorded this tune in 1938 as their first Decca recording ). Ever heard the song text: Laguna oreeney - Laguna orooney - laguna oreeney - Lyin' in the Sun and Havin' Fun or the nonsensical quote: Pippity Pop, Goes The Motor-sickle; Phrases one never forgets! Slam plays the bowed bass.

On the 9th of November 2008, today 70 years ago, Slim and Slam recorded four sides for Vocalion:

SLIM AND SLAM: Slim Gaillard guitar and vocal - Slam Stewart bass and vocal with Kenneth Hollon on tenor saxophone - Sam Allen on the keys and Pompey "Guts" Dobson on drums.

Recorded for Vocalion in New York City on the 9th of November 1938.

According the discographies Slim Gaillard tap-dances on the last title.

Seventy years ago they recorded four tunes accompanied by three musicians, mentioned above. Kenneth Hollon played the tenor saxophone in bands like Hal Hunter's in the early 1930s and introduced Billie Holiday for one of her first public appearances. He would be one of the musicians that accompanied her on the "great" Strange Fruit recording for Commodore; "great"? The song, not the subject of the song of course.

Slim Gaillard: guitar player and vocalist, but also active on the piano.

The four tunes on this session, all Gaillard compositions, are light-footed and entertaining - played in an up-tempo with a screaming saxophone; the typical bowed bass and Slam vocalizing the tones to play; and a swinging rhythmical guitar: Dopey Joe (from Baltimore), (Say Hey Hey) Sweet Safronia, (Man, it's really cold ........) It's Gettin' Kinda Chilly and Buck Dance Rhythm - all with nonsensical lyrics. The tap-dance in the last tune, credited to Slim Gaillard in the books, was not done by Slim, but by one of the fans in the recording studio, Kenneth Hollon remembered 35 years later ....... Well he was in that studio, so why should we question the correctness of the story? Slim Gaillard was a good dancer after all. Jerry pointed me to a film fragment from the film Hellzapoppin' from 1941, in which Slim Gaillard is to be heard on the piano, together with his companion Slam Stewart on the bass; a great fragment to introduce you to their music.

A great dance party .......... By the way - the music of Slim en Slam, jive music - rhythm & blues and rock and roll avant-la-lettre should be labeled as amusement or vaudeville music. It's entertaining and you don't need to have a music's degree to understand it. Great to listen to, but if you listen to the four songs of this 70 years old recording session it seems as if they all have the same drive - the same sound - the same melody - the same key. I found a compilation by a guy who says that he hates all Slim and Slam music, because they all sound the same. He took a fragment of a Slim and Slam performance and posted some songs simultaneous in the film. Listen to it and .......... to be honest? ........ well judge yourself.

In de jaren zestig begonnen reclamebureaus huishoudens te benaderen met de modernste reclamecampagnes, zoals het versturen van gramofoonplaatjes, die de klant moesten verlokken hun product te kopen.
Deze gramofoonplaatjes moesten, uiteraard, heel dun zijn, om, goedkoop, als brief verstuurd te kunnen worden. Deze flubberplaatjes, zoals wij ze noemden, waren klankdrukken, voornamelijk gemaakt door Sound for Industry uit Engeland of onze eigen Rotterdamse Sonopresse. Ook North State, een toendertijd bekend sigarettenmerk probeerde hun klanten te verlokken met zo'n plaatje, gezongen door Rita Reys met het North State Huisorkest. Er was hier geen sprake van een verhullend pseudoniem, want zowel op de hoes als op de foto waren zowel Rita Reys als de Dutch Swing College Band duidelijk genoemd.

Deze plaat is uitgegeven op de dag dat North State in Nederland in de nieuwe internationale verpakking verkrijgbaar werd gesteld. Wij hopen dat deze plaat u evenveel genoegen zal schenken als North State, de zachte geurige Amerikaan.

In die jaren zestig werd er nog volop reclame gemaakt voor het roken van sigaretten - een toen algemeen geaccepteerd genotmiddel. Hoewel hier nergens expliciet genoemd of afgebeeld, werd jazzmuziek vaak geassocieerd met rokerige jazzclubs, waar een zwaar zwetende trompettist met rokende sigaret in de hand, met toegeknepen ogen vanwege die rook, een spetterende solo ten uitvoer brengt. Roken hoorde bij jazzmuziek, zoals overigens ook alcohol en drugs. Zonder al die genotsmiddelen, werd gesuggereerd, viel er weinig te genieten bij deze muziek.

Op het flubberplaatje vier nummers, alle opgenomen in Den Haag op 31 juli 1963 en ook terug te vinden op de bekende LP Rita Reys and the Dutch Swing College Band: Jazz Sir That's Our Baby ( Philips 433284PE) (let op de woordspelingen in de titel)
De Dutch Swing College Band bestond in die dagen uit Ray Kaart op trompet, Dick Kaart op trombone, Peter Schilperoort op klarinet, Arie Ligthart op banjo en gitaar Bob van Oven op bas en Lu Ssanet ( eingelijk heette hij Louis de Lussanet ) op slagwerk. Rita Reys, uiteraard, nam de zang voor haar rekening.

( Naar het Nederlands-Vlaamse deel met o.a. Kid Sheik (100) en Cannonball Adderley (80)) KLANKDRUKKEN HUIZE POLL en COLEMAN HAWKINS

A week ago Frits Jonker pointed me to some great Dutch soundsheets from the 1960s in a selection Jazz or No? It was really great to hear these 1960s ephemeral relics again. It brought me some memories from the period that I became fascinated by records and record playing. During the 1950s and 1960s when I was a kid and a young adult we didn't had a gramophone at home. In those decades, just after the end of the Second World War, the standards of living was not so high ....
I remember that my parents were in an amateur drama club in Hoedekenskerke, a small village in the southwest part of The Netherlands along the Scheldt estuary - at that time for me the center of the world. For a play they needed a gramophone on stage. My parents could lend one from a man some blocks away and I still remember the thrill having a record player at home for a few days. It had only one record: Junge, komm bald wieder by Freddy Quinn ( 1963). Soon we had some records ourselves. Het Beste, the Dutch version of Readers Digest, sent free thin promo records (gratis luisterproef), to invite you to buy sets like Het Beste uit Operette and Musical (= The Best from Light Opera and Musical) or De Gouden Klank der Groten (= The Golden Sound of the Great)

My uncle and aunt in Rotterdam had a gramophone too and when we visited their place in our summer holidays, my brother and I loved to play their gramophone - real breakable records with artists like Dorus ( Tom Manders) and Cor Steyn, two vaudeville artists famous in this part of the world. One of the Klankdrukken ( Soundsheets), we called it Flubberplaatjes, I still have in my collection. It is one to promote the drinking of milk. M-Dag 64 the label reads and the first side was a contest: Grote M-Prijsvraag Voor Een Veilig Verkeer. ( = Great Milk-Contest for Safe Traffic) and the reverse two songs sung by Donald Jones ( his name was not on the label, but we recognized his American accent) Everybody Likes Milk and the Milk-Shake Twist. Donald Jones was an American dancer and vocalist who married a Dutch actress Adele Bloemendaal and lived in The Netherlands.

Another one was a free advertisement record for Citroën Cars, and specially the 2CV. On the record a photo of a young duck. This needs some explanation for foreign readers I guess. In The Netherland this car, the 2CV, is nicknamed a Lelijke Eend (= an Ugly Duckling), like in Germany, where they call it an Ente or Lame Ente. In most other countries they know this type of car as the Kørende Paraply ( = The Driving Umbrella) (In Denmark - is this correct Jo?) or De Geit ( The Goat) in Flanders or Jernseng (= iron bed) in Norway.

These Klankdrukken ( = Soundsheets) were produced by Sonopresse in Rotterdam, that must have made hundred thousands of those tiny plastic record between 1961 and 1984. The Dutch Het Beste "luisterproeven" ( = by Reader's Digest) were most made in England by Sound for Industry. ( The one shown above, titled "The Reader's Digest Luisterproef voor The Big Bands Playing Today's Hits met Pim Jacobs als Uw gastheer" was produced by Sonopresse)

Yesterday I refered to the fact that Charlie Beal was born 100 years ago. He is best known for his appearance in the film New Orleans. I showed you a fragment with Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday singing Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans. Charlie Beal was at the piano. Hvickery posted a part of the Armstrong lyrics of the song: "Where the Blues Were Born in New Orleans"

A piano man and can he spiel.

Only has two hands,

But that's a-plenty,

'Cause when he plays

It sounds like 20."

HUIZE POLL en COLEMAN HAWKINS

Afgelopen weekend werd in heel Nederland Open Monumentendag georganiseerd. In De Bilt bij Utrecht
werd herdacht dat Coleman Hawkins in de jaren dertig gespeeld had in Huize Poll. Zeventig jaar geleden speelde Coleman Hawkins, die toen in Nederland verbleef, een maand lang in Huize Poll, een danszaal annex restaurant gelegen in De Bilt. Ruim een jaar geleden onderzocht ik de relatie tussen Coleman Hawkins en Huize Poll hetgeen resulteerde in twee bijdragen, getiteld Coleman Hawkins en Huize Poll en Huize Poll en Coleman Hawkins
Een aantal ondernemers sloeg de handen in elkaar en organiseerden afgelopen zaterdag, 13 september 2008, op de plaats waar Huize Poll gestaan heeft, een manifestatie. Beide foto's zijn bij die gelegenheid gemaakt. Bedankt Jelle voor de foto's.

KID SHEIK ( 1908 - 1996)

De honderdjarigen zijn niet aan te slepen. Vandaag, 100 jaar geleden, 15 september 1908, werd in New Orleans de trompettist en bandleider Kid Sheik Colar geboren. Deze trompettist is vooral bekend geworden door zijn optredens bij de Preservation Hall Band. Als 18 jarige had hij al zijn eigen band, midden jaren twintig, en speelde in de beroemde, of moet ik zeggen, beruchte wijk van New Orleans, Storyville. Hij werd bekend onder heel wat namen: Kid Sheik, of George" Kid Sheik" of Kid Sheik Colar of Cola. Eind jaren veertig ging hij spelen bij George Lewis en werd in de jaren vijftig lid van de Eureka Brass Band en de Harold Dejan's Olympia Brass Band. In de jaren zestig vinden we hem terug in bands zoals zijn eigen groepen the Swingsters en de Storyville Ramblers met legendarische namen als Capt. John Handy en Cié Frazier. Hij maakte verschillende tournees naar Europa om tenslotte te belanden in de Preservation Hall Band. Ik heb een CD in mijn verzameling waarin hij speelt met de Backroom Boys ( mei 1973 in Kopenhagen-Denemarken). Kid Sheik is 88 jaar oud geworden en overleed november 1996.

JULIAN CANNONBALL ADDERLEY

Als hij nog had geleefd, zou Julian Cannonball Adderley vandaag 80 jaar zijn geworden; hij overleed echter voor zijn vijftigste. Vorige maand schreef ik, op zijn sterfdag, over zijn carrriere in de bijdrage: Julian Cannonball Adderley. Ik schreef eerder over zijn schitterende album Somethin' Else, één van de beste jazzplaten allertijden.

JAZZ OR NO? NOSTALGISCH MIJMEREN met FLUBBERPLAATJES:

Melk Is Goed Voor Elk is volgens mij zo'n slogan die al jaren meegaat. Melkdrinken is goed voor opgroeiende kinderen; dat is nu zo en dat was vroeger zo !! Toen ik zelf in die fase zat, lang geleden in de vorige eeuw, moest ik zelfs drie bekers melk per dag drinken. Terugkijkend op die tijd kan ik alleen concluderen dat ik daar een verslaving aan heb overgehouden ......... Lees er alles over in: Klankdrukken.

Een week geleden wees Frits Jonker me op aantal schitterende klankdrukken uit de jaren zestig met een selectie die hij: Jazz or No? noemt. Fantastisch om deze dunne flubberplaatjes, wegwerpplaatjes uit mijn jeugd weer eens te horen; herinneringen kwamen weer boven drijven uit de tijd toen ik voor het eerst geboeid raakte door gramofoonplaten. In de jaren vijftig en zestig, toen ik kind was, hadden we geen gramofoon. In die jaren was dat heel gewoon - in de jaren na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, ten tijde van de wederopbouw, was er geen geld voor dit soort "uitspattingen'.
Ik herinner me mijn eerste ervaringen met een gramofoon: mijn ouders zaten in een amateurtoneelvereniging in Hoedekenskerke, een dorpje aan de boorden van de Westerschelde ( voor mij toen het centrum van de wereld) en voor een uitvoering in het verenigingsgebouw naast de kerk hadden ze op het toneel een gramofoon nodig. Ze konden er één lenen van iemand, die in De Boeiert woonde en ik herinner me nog, hoe die ene plaat, die op het toneel gespeeld moest worden, vele malen achter elkaar werd afgespeeld: Junge, komm bald wieder door Freddy Quinn ( 1963). Later hadden we zelf ook platen - nee geen breekbare 78-toeren schellakplaten, maar van die dunne reclameplaatjes, flubberplaatjes noemden we ze, maar officieel heetten ze klankdrukken, die we toegestuurd kregen door bijvoorbeeld Het Beste, om je uit te nodigen je muziekniveau op te krikken met een set LPs met namen als Het Beste uit Operette en Musical of De Gouden Klank der Groten.

Mijn oom in Rotterdam, waar we in de (lange) zomervakanties logeerden, had wel "gewone" platen met Dorus en Meneer Cor Steyn,( neem me niet kwalijk dat ik u even onderbreekt, maar zou u me even op mijn rug willen krabben?). Mijn broer en ik mochten dan graag platen draaien. Eén van die eerste klankdrukken die ik kreeg was er één ter promotie van het drinken van melk: M-Dag 64 staat er op het label en kant A was een wedstrijd: ( Grote M-Prijsvraag Voor Een Veilig Verkeer) en op de achterkant een nummer gezongen door Donald Jones ( die naam stond weliswaar niet op het label, maar we herkende meteen die stem met dat Amerikaanse accent van de televisie) getiteld Everybody Likes Milk en de Milk-Shake Twist. Een ander "flubber"plaatje uit mijn eerste verzameling (!) was een gratis advertentie voor Citroën, voor de 2CV of te hoewel de Lelijke eend, de automibiel uit de jaren zestig, waarvan we er later veschillende versleten hebben.

Op de "picture disk" een foto van een jong eendje, uiteraard referend aan de bijnaam voor de 2CV. Deze klankdrukken werden geproduceerd door Sonopresse in Rotterdam, die er duizenden gemaakt moet hebben tussen 1961 en 1984. De Nederlandse "luisterproeven" van Het Beste ( = Reader's Digest) werden (meestal) geproduceerd door het Engelse Sound For Industry ( Het plaatje hierboven is zo'n uitzondering,zie ik nou pas)

Dankzij Frits kan ik genieten van deze schitterende herinneringen, die voor mij het begin van mijn platen-verslaving inluidden. Als je zelf leuke herineringen hebt hoor ik die graag en misschien kunen we over één of meer plaatjes wel eens een leuke blog maken. Ik vond een fragment met één van die klankdrukken, die gemaakt zijn in opdracht van de oliemaatschappij BP: de BP Super Mix Fuel, gezongen door onze eigen Corrie Brokken and the Hi-Five, uitgebracht ca 1962. Even nostalisch mijmeren.

CHARLIE BEAL ( 1908-1991)
Today, the 14th of September 2008, we should commemorate the fact that 100 years ago Charlie Beal was born in Los Angeles. (14th of September, 1908). He is one of those numerous sidemen in jazz and dance band music, that performed during the 20th century, now almost forgotten and hidden in obscurity. He was a piano player, like his younger brother Eddie Beal and performed in the bands of Speed Webb ( ca 1929), en Les Hite (1930). In the 1930s he was part of the Erskine Tate Vendome Orchestra, played with Louis Armstrong and Noble Sissle, recorded with Buster Bailey and Eddie South. Duriug the 1930s he also played the piano in bars like Adrian's Tap Room and the Onyx and, after his military service in the 1940s, also on the opposite coast in clubs like the Jococo Room. He is to be seen in the film New Orleans. The picture on the left is from that film and the only photo I found. Enjoy the little fragment, part of the film, in which you can hear Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday singing their known duet Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans. The piano player, seen on the back, is Charlie Beal.

Charlie Beal stayed active in music until the end of the 1950s and passed away August 1991.
