RITA REYS met het NORTH STATE huisorkest ...

In the 1960s advertisement agencies found a new way to contact households by sending tiny plastic records to introduce new products or services. These records were very light and thin because it was sent by snailmail. These soundies were called in The Netherlands Klankdrukken, which means to the letter "Sound prints"; these records were made by the English Sound for Industry or our own Dutch Sonopresse, based in Rotterdam. North State, a well known brand for cigarettes, tried to tempt mankind to smoke their cigarettes by informing clients to a new kind of package. On the free record well known vocalist Rita Reys, still active, although her ripe age, labeled in those days as Europe's First Lady of Jazz, sings with the North State Huisorkest ( = house orchestra), which was, no doubt about that, the Dutch Swing College Band as its name and picture was on the cover too.

During the 1960s promoting cigarettes and the smoking of it, was still accepted. Jazz music and jazz clubs were associated with the smoke of cigarettes, with a heavenly perspiring trumpet player playing a hot solo with a cigarette between his fingers and his eyes closed, concentrated, with the smoke in his eyes. Smoke Get's In Your Eyes was a hit in that kind of clubs. Jazz was not only associated with cigarette smoking, but also with alcohol and drugs, hookers and gamblers; without all those temptations, born in the cities of Sodom and Gomorra ( or New Orleans' Storyville if you like) you could never enjoy Jazz music - you couldn't survive a jazz concert without it- it suggested. Do you remember the cartoon short: Tin Pan Alley Cats? Or my contribution Ain't Misbehavin', about my first introduction to the Fats Waller soundies.

In this Keep Swinging blog I wrote about those soundies - klankdrukken - in previous blogs, like the one simply labeled: Soundsheets. The four tunes on this tiny record were all recorded in The Hague on the last day of July 1963 and are to be found on the well known Philips album: Rita Reys and the Dutch Swing College Band: Jazz Sir That's Our Baby ( Philips 433284PE) (mind the play upon words in the title of the record). The Dutch Swing College Band featured in those days Ray Kaart on trumpet, Dick Kaart on trombone, Peter Schilperoort on the clarinet, Arie Ligthart on banjo and guitar, Bob van Oven on bass and Lu Ssanet ( real name Louis de Lussanet ) on drums. Rita Reys, of course, is doing the vocals. I found a fragment of her singing After You've Gone with the Dutch Swing College Band:

Vandaag terug in de tijd ... ver terug. Een nummer gecomponeerd eind jaren twintig en gespeeld op een zogenaamde pianola, een kruising tussen een piano en een "draaiorgel". Een wat vreemde omschrijving geef ik toe, maar m.b.v. rollen kon men in het begin van de XXste eeuw de piano muziek laten maken, zonder dat men zelf de kunst van het pianospelen onder de knie moest hebben. Deze instrumenten waren toen erg populair en veertig jaar geleden droomde ik al ooit zo'n instrument te bezitten. 't Is er nooit van gekomen.

Ik herinner me, dat een jaar geleden tijdens een rommelmarkt in Nisse, een klein dorpje in de Zak van Zuid Beveland, er zo'n pianola bij opbod verkocht werd. Ik heb geen idee of het ding nog werkte en hoe hij klonk en ik heb ook niet afgewacht wat het ding uiteindelijk opgebracht heeft. Bovendien kan ik wel thuis komen met een paar oude boeken of platen ( of met de zoveelste gramofoon die-het-nog-doet ...), maar moeilijk met een 400 kg. wegende ruimteverslindende pianola in de kofferbak (!).
Luister hoe zo'n pianola klonk en als je wilt kun je zachtjes meezingen - de tekst staat hieronder.

De teerling is geworpen. In de aanloop naar de 1000ste blog konden bezoekers van de site hun favoriete blog kiezen uit de bijna 1000 die in de afgelopen twee jaar verschenen. Er zijn vijf bijdragen uitgeloot en die worden de komende dagen nog een keer geplaatst. De volgorde is bepaald door het lot; de inbrenger van de bijdrage die het laatst geplaatst wordt krijgt de beloofde CD. Nog even spannend dus. Morgen de eerste bijdrage in de herhaling.

Lucky Millinder

When you enter a CD shop, at least here in Zeeland ( southwest part of the Netherlands), it will struck you that most items for sale are DVD's. Films and video clips of music artists seem to be booming business. They even have a small bunch of jazz DVD's, although, like the CD's in the early times, in marginal amounts. If you're lucky, you might find some historical stuff, like Snader transcriptions or soundies. Since the release of four DVD's in the Jazz Classical Masters series, that contained historical material of inferior quality, I feel hesitant about buying this kind of stuff. I found myself a DVD titled Count Basie and friends ... , a release in the Jazz O Logy series and the quality was acceptable. This DVD, Count Basie and Friends has a deceptive title, as it suggests that it contains only films of Count Basie. It is a compilation from films made by Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Fats Waller, Lucky Millinder, Henry Red Allen, Joe Turner and Louis Armstrong. I wonder if they were all friends of Basie, as the title suggests. Most of the short films are soundies or telescriptions. Soundies are short films, to be seen on self-contained, coin-operated, 16mm rear-projection machines called Panorams. They were made in the early 1940s to be used in night clubs and bars. We should call these short films video clips avant la lettre and in fact they were, although not to be played on a TV set, but as a kind of amusement in public places.

I became interested in the series of soundies, made by the Lucky Millinder band, that are on this DVD, due to the fact that this band is rather unknown. There are nine soundies and I found it fascinated to see this well organized band playing with Lucky Millinder in front of the troups, directing, almost dancing, not like Cab Calloway with wild movements, but with small signals, while enjoying the soloists. A man who possess charisma I'd say. The music of Lucky Millinder is now almost forgotten and his orchestra was overshadowed by bands like Duke Ellington's who were much more popular. He was born in 1900 in Anniston AL and grew up in Chicago. He couldn't read music nor did he play an instrument, but he worked as a dancer ( you still can see it the way he acts) in cabarets and organised bands, under the name of Lucius Venable. He was a bandleader in the south of France during the early 1930s, but returned to New York and became the leader of the famous Mills Blue Rhythm Band. This band was disbanned in 1938 and Lucky Millinder directed some less succesfull bands until he formed his own group in 1940, to be seen on the soundies. Sister Rosetta Tharpe, actually a gospel singer, became vocalist and made some hits, like Ride Red Ride. In the Lucky Millinder band, that worked at the Savoy Ballroom musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Freddie Webster started their careers. As far as I know they are not on the soundies available on the DVD. Lucky Millinder ended his musical career in 1950 and became a disc jockey and became a liquor salesman.

On the DVD are a few soundies that are not listed in David Meeker's Jazz In The Movies. Maybe someone can help me to date these soundies? The titles are Sweet Slumber and Do The Hucklebuck and one with an unidentified title. It's a pity that the original opening shot with the title and credits have been removed from all fragments (due to rights?).

I love to share with you three fragments of Lucky Millinder. The first one is not a soundie, but a part of a 1939 film titled Readin' Rittin' and Rhythm that includes three tracks, which features a young Don Byas, Frankie Newton, Bill Doggett and Shadow Wilson. The other two are soundies and here you will also find Bill Doggett at the keyboards; he would become famous as a Rhythm & Blues organ player in the 1950s.

Ride Red Ride: Lucky Millinder and his Orchestra with a tune Lucky named "Ride Red Ride" but which rather looks like "Tiger Rag". Good solos by Don Byas (tenorsax) and Frankie Newton (trumpet) Lucky Millinder seems to imitate Cab Calloway directing his band.

Als je tegenwoordig een platenzaak binnen stapt, tenminste hier in Zeeland, dan valt het je op dat er bijna alleen maar DVD's in de verkoop zijn. Films en videoclips van artiesten te kust en te keur. Ze hebben soms zelfs een stapeltje jazz DVD's, zij het in kleine aantallen, net als vroeger bij de CD's. Met een beetje geluk hebben ze ook historisch jazz materiaal op DVD, hoewel ik sinds de verschijning van de vier Jazz Classical Masters, die gevuld waren met films van inferieure kwaliteit, wat huiverig geworden ben. Toch heb ik onlangs de DVD getiteld Count Basie and Friends ... gekocht, uitgebracht in de serie Jazz O Logy en die beelden zijn van een veel betere kwaliteit.

Deze DVD, Count Basie and Friends heeft een beetje misleidende titel, alsof het suggereert dat Count Basie hier speelt met vrienden; in werkelijkheid is het een verzamelband met films van Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Fats Waller, Lucky Millinder, Henry Red Allen, Joe Turner en Louis Armstrong. Ik vraag me af of ze wel allemaal vrienden van Basie waren, maar dit terzijde. De meeste films zijn zgn. Soundies en Telescriptions. Soundies zijn korte 16 mm films, die in munt-automaten af te spelen waren in bars en nachtclubs. Eigenlijk zijn het videoclips avant la lettre, en neemt de automaat de plaats in van de TV.

Ik raakte geintereseerd in de serie Soundies, gemaakt door de Lucky Millinder Band, misschien omdat die band relatief het onbekendst is. Er staan negen soundies op de DVD en ik vond het fascinerend te zien hoe goed georganiseerd de band is, onder leiding van Lucky Millinder, die, bijna dansend, niet zo uitbundig als Cab Calloway overigens, met haast onmerkbare signalen de regie letterlijk in handen heeft. Hij geniet zichtbaar van de solisten en van de muziek. Hij is een man met een groot charisma, dat is zeker. De muziek van Lucky Millinder is nu bijna helemaal vergeten en overschaduwd door de grote bands zoals die van Duke Ellington. Lucky Millinder werd geboren in 1900 in Anniston AL en groeide op in Chicago. Hij kon geen noot lezen en bespeelde geen instrument.
