West End Blues

West End Blues was written by Joe King Oliver as a 12-bar blues and although everybody knows it as an instrumental Clarence Williams is reponsable for the lyrics. It was first recorded by the King Oliver Dixie Syncopators on the 11th of June 1928, under the direction of Clarence Williams who also played the piano, King Oliver on cornet, Jimmy Archey on trombone, Ernest Elliott on clarinet and alto saxophone, like Arville Harris who also plays the tenor saxophone, Leroy Harris on banjo and Cyrus St. Clair on tuba. Louis Armstrong would record his famous version fourteen days later with his Hot Five featuring Louis Armstrong on cornet, Fred Robinson on trombone, Jimmy Strong on clarinet and tenor saxophone, Earl Hines at the piano, Mancy Cara banjo and Zutty Singleton dm. It would become the most famous interpretation. For the vocal version you'll have to wait two months, as Hazel Smith sung it on the 29th of August accompanied by King Oliver on cornet and Clarence Williams at the piano.
West End Blues. West End? West End of what? The title refers to the West End of Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans. It's a place, outside the city, with several restaurants where the people of New Orleans loved to be in the weekends to relax, swimming and have a good meal. Ken Burns made for his documentary Jazz the following fragment according the West End Blues.

West End Blues werd geschreven door Joe King Oliver als een 12-maten blues en, hoewel iedereen het nummer alleen instrumentaal kent, heeft het ook tekst, geschreven door Clarence Williams. Het werd voor de eerste keer op de plaat gezet door de King Oliver Dixie Syncopators op 11 juni 1928, onderleiding van Clarence Williams, die ook piano speelde, verder natuurlijk King Oliver op de kornet, Jimmy Archey op trombone, Ernest Elliott op klarinet en altsax, net als Arville Harris, die ook de tenor af en toe bespeelt, Leroy Harris op banjo en Cyrus St. Clair op tuba. The other musicians are Trummy Young on trombone, Billy Kyle at the piano and Barrett Deems on drums.

One of the all-time great jazz/blues tunes. As far as the first vocal rendition, Ethel Waters recorded it on August 23, 1928, accompanied by Clarence Williams on piano. This was five days before Hazel Smith recorded it.
