Max Woiski in de Top 40? Zeker. In 1950 lukte hem dat één keer met het nummer B.B. met R.. Maar ik bedoel nu. - Zeker wel, die kans is groot - in de Top-40 van Nederlandse reclameliedjes, wel te verstaan. Aan mij zal het niet liggen, want ik heb op de Nescafé Coffee Boat Song gestemd op de online publieksverkiezing voor de Nederlandse reclameliedjes Top 40

Nescafé Coffeeboatsong - Max Woiski ( 1957)

Max Woiski werd geboren in Domburg in Suriname in februari 1911. Suriname was toen nog een kolonie van Nederland. Hij kwam naar Nederland in 1936 en werd een gezocht muzikant in het populaire genre m.n. het Cubaanse repertoire. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog was hij de uitbater van het La Cubana café in Amsterdam, dat eerst aan de Amstelkade gevestigd was; later aan de Leidsestraat. Daar trad hij op als José Barretto, samen met zijn vrouw Alma Woiski-Braaf als Lolita Mojica.

Hoewel afkomstig uit Suriname, dachten de meesten, dat hij, omdat hij Cubaanse muziek bracht en een vrij lichte huid had, dat hij uit Cuba kwam. Hierdoor kon hij in de oorlog als "blanke" muzikant blijven spelen. Andere muzikanten uit Suriname uit die tijd waren klarinettist en altsaxofonist Arthur Parisius, alias Kid Dynamite en tapdanser – trompettist Theodorus Gustaaf Kantoor, alias Teddy Cotton.

Na de oorlog nam hij een nummer op met zijn La Cubana Orkest dat een grote hit werd: B.B. met R. ( of Bruine Bonen met Rijst). In de jaren vijftig begon hij Surinaamse muziek te spelen, mede dankzij het toegenomen aantal immigranten vanuit dat land. In 1956 was zijn orkest te zien in de eerste Nederlandse kleurenfilm Jenny. In 1957 speelde zijn band in een reclamefilm voor Nescafé, getiteld Nescafé Coffeeboatsong, dat op het filmfestival van Cannes gepresenteerd werd en een jaar later, in 1958, tijdens de Filmdag in Amsterdam. De Nescafé Coffeeboatsong (sic) werd uitgebracht door Phonopress, Heemstede als een kartonnen fotoplaat, met het nummer geperst in de plastic toplaag. Op de kaart een “Caraibisch” dorpsplein met een Latin band, hoogstwaarschijnlijk zijn eigen La Cubana Orkest. Het zou me niks verbazen als zou blijken dat de foto genomen was op de set van de Nescafe film, aangezien ik op het internet nog een tweede reclameplaat voor Nescafé vond, ook door Max Woiski gemaakt, voor de Duitse markt: Calypso Nescafe. De foto is gemaakt op dezelfde locatie.

Op het Nederlandse Nescafé Coffeeboatsongplaatje vind je Max Woiski sr. in het midden op fluit en waarschijnlijk Steve Boston op percussie en Johnny de Miranda op conga. Johnny de Miranda vierde onlangs zijn 84ste verjaardag. De bassist is me onbekend. Op de Duitse plaat staat Max Woiski sr., weer, maar nu met een gitaar en Johnny heeft de rumbaballen in handen. En zou de fluitist hier niet Max Mackintosh ( = Max Woiski jr.) kunnen zijn?

In de jaren zestig verhuisde Max Woiski sr. naar Spanje om daar een nachtclub te beginnen, toevallig ook La Cubana geheten, in Mallorca. Na een aantal succesvolle jaren moet hij hiermee stoppen en trekt hij zich terug in Porto de Andriatx. In januari 1981 overlijdt hij in Hoogeveen.
Zijn zoon Max Mackintosh ( alias Max Woiski jr.) en kleindochter Lils Mackintosh zijn beiden eveneens in de muziek terecht gekomen.

In 1961 brengt Sonopresse, een firma uit Rotterdam, de eerste dunne flexibele reclameplaatjes uit, die gestuurd konden worden per post, om producten te promoten. Ik herinner me nog deze dunne wegwerpplaatjes, zoals de “gratis luisterproeven” van Reader’s Digest uit de jaren zestig en zeventig – mijn eerste kennismakling met het fenomeen grammofoonplaat en beschreven in een eerdere blog, getiteld Klankdrukken. Deze flexibele plaatjes zijn jarenlang genegeerd door de serieuze platenverzamelaars, maar dat is nu afgelopen. Dankzij Dolf Hell en Frits Jonker is een selectie van deze wegwerpsingeltjes; nu beschreven en wordt uitgebracht in een boek getiteld De muzikale verleiding, met als ondertitel Nederlandse reclame op 45 toeren en zal over een paar weken uitgebracht worden. Het boek zal twee Cd’s bevatten met daarin hun Top 40 van de Nederlandse reclameliedjes - een aanstekelijke mix van naoorlogse muziek.

Het zal je niet verrassen dat in mijn Top 3 de Nescafe Coffeeboatsong zit, gezongen door Max Woiski sr. En, als je mijn eerdere bijdrage over deze Klankdrukken hebt gelezen, dan begrijp je Het Lelijke Eendje er ook bij zit. Helaas was Everybody Likes Milk en de Milk Shake Twist, gezongen door Donald Jones ( bekend van het bubbelbad in de Brosreclame, weet je nog?) voor de M-Brigade, de voorloper van de Joris Driepinter campagne, stond er niet bij. Jammer! Dan maar een andere plaat ……….. Wordt het …. Corrie Brokken en de BP Super Mix Song of toch maar het Solexlied van Max van Praag of het Goederenlied van Drs. P., onlangs 90 jaar geworden? Nee, het wordt Ay, ay, ay die Caballero door het Leedy Trio – die zongen we vroeger altijd mee ....… Tjonge jonge – het valt niet mee …..

Nescafé Coffeeboatsong - Max Woiski ( 1957)

Max Woiski was born in Domburg in Suriname, a small country north of Brazil, February 1911. Suriname was then a colony of The Netherlands. He came to Holland in 1936 and became a sought after musician playing popular music, labelled as Latin or Cuban music. During the Second World War he was the manager of a café La Cubana at the Amstelstraat, later in the Leidsestraat, in Amsterdam, where he performed as José Barretto, together with his wife Alma Woiski-Braaf as Lolita Mojica.

Although he was from Suriname most people believed that he was a Cuban musician and thanks to that and his rather light coloured skin he could survive the German occupation as a "white" musician. Some other Surinamese musicians from that period were, of course, clarinet and alto saxophone player Arthur Parisius ( aka Kid Dynamite) and tap dancer – trumpet player Theodorus Gustaaf Kantoor, better known as Teddy Cotton.

After the war he recorded a tune with his La Cubana Orkest that became a hit: B.B. met R. ( or Bruine Bonen met Rijst) ( = Kidney beans with rice). In the 1950s Max started to play Surinamese music, which became popular thanks to the fact that the number of Surinamese immigrants was increasing. In 1956 his orchestra was to be seen in the first Dutch colour movie Jenny. In 1957 he played with his band at a Nescafé promo film, titled Nescafé Coffeeboatsong, which was presented at the Film Festival of Cannes and the Filmdag in Amsterdam (1958). The Nescafé Coffeeboatsong (sic) was released by Phonopress, Heemstede ( The Netherlands) as a card board card, with the song impressed into the surface On the card a colourful “tropical” image of a band playing Latin music. It wouldn’t surprise me if the photo was from the 1957 Nescafé promo film, as I found a copy on the internet of another Max Woiski advertisement record, also made as a promo for Nescafé , released for the German market, titled Calypso Nescafe. This photo was made at the same location.

On the Dutch Nescafé Coffeeboatsong you can find Max Woiksi sr. in the centre playing the flute and probably Steve Boston on percussion and Johnny de Miranda on the conga. Johnny de Miranda celebrated his 84th birthday recently. The bass player is unknown to me. On the German record Max seems to play the guitar and Johnny the maracas. And the flute player might be Max sr.'s son, Max Mackintosh ( aka Max Woiski jr.). Sing along .........
In the 1960s Max Woiski moved to Spain and started a night club ( also named La Cubana ) in Mallorca. After some successful years, he had to stop and retired in Porto de Andriatx. In January 1981 he passed away in Hoogeveen, a city in the eastern part of The Netherlands.
His son, Max Mackintosh ( aka Max Woiski jr.) and grand daughter Lils Mackintosh both followed in their (grand)father’s footsteps.

In 1961 Sonopresse, a Dutch firm from Rotterdam, started to distribute thin plastic advertisement records, who were sent by (snail) mail to promote a product. I remembered these thin ephemeral klankdrukken, soundsheets, from the 1960s and 1970s, when I was in my teens, in a previous contribution, titled Soundsheets. These flexi-discs have been neglected for years by serious record collectors, but that’s all over now. Thanks to Dolf Hell and Frits Jonker a selection of these klankdrukken have now been listed and described in a book, titled De muzikale verleiding, ( = The musical temptation), subtitled Nederlandse reclame op 45 toeren ( = Dutch advertisement records on 45rpm) and will be released later this month. The book will contain two CDs with 40 selected tracks, een aanstekelijke mix van naoorlogse muziek – a fascinating mix of post-war music.

Well, it won’t surprise to you, that I selected the Nescafe Coffeeboatsong sung by Max Woiski sr. and, when you have studied my early contribution Soundsheets you’ll understand that Het Lelijke Eendje is also in my Top 3 selection. Unfortunally, the Everybody Likes Milk and the Milk Shake Twist, sung by Donald Jones of the M-Brigade, was not in their selection, so I had to make an alternate choice …………. What about ……. Corrie Brokken and the BP Super Mix Song or the Solexlied by Max Van Praag or the Goederenlied by Drs. P. or Ay, ay, ay die Caballero by the Leedy Trio ………… oh boy – I can’t make my choice.

In the 1960s advertisement agencies found a new way to contact households by sending tiny plastic records to introduce new products or services. These records were very light and thin because it was sent by snailmail. These soundies were called in The Netherlands Klankdrukken, which means to the letter "Sound prints"; these records were made by the English Sound for Industry or our own Dutch Sonopresse, based in Rotterdam. North State, a well known brand for cigarettes, tried to tempt mankind to smoke their cigarettes by informing clients to a new kind of package. On the free record well known vocalist Rita Reys, still active, although her ripe age, labeled in those days as Europe's First Lady of Jazz, sings with the North State Huisorkest ( = house orchestra), which was, no doubt about that, the Dutch Swing College Band as its name and picture was on the cover too.

(= This record was published on the day North State introduces its new international package ). Wij hopen dat deze plaat u evenveel genoegen zal schenken als North State, de zachte geurige Amerikaan. During the 1960s promoting cigarettes and the smoking of it, was still accepted. Jazz music and jazz clubs were associated with the smoke of cigarettes, with a heavenly perspiring trumpet player playing a hot solo with a cigarette between his fingers and his eyes closed, concentrated, with the smoke in his eyes. Smoke Get's In Your Eyes was a hit in that kind of clubs. Jazz was not only associated with cigarette smoking, but also with alcohol and drugs, hookers and gamblers; without all those temptations, born in the cities of Sodom and Gomorra ( or New Orleans' Storyville if you like) you could never enjoy Jazz music - you couldn't survive a jazz concert without it- it suggested. Do you remember the cartoon short: Tin Pan Alley Cats? Or my contribution Ain't Misbehavin', about my first introduction to the Fats Waller soundies.

In this Keep Swinging blog I wrote about those soundies - klankdrukken - in previous blogs, like the one simply labeled: Soundsheets. The four tunes on this tiny record were all recorded in The Hague on the last day of July 1963 and are to be found on the well known Philips album: Rita Reys and the Dutch Swing College Band: Jazz Sir That's Our Baby ( Philips 433284PE) (mind the play upon words in the title of the record). The Dutch Swing College Band featured in those days Ray Kaart on trumpet, Dick Kaart on trombone, Peter Schilperoort on the clarinet, Arie Ligthart on banjo and guitar, Bob van Oven on bass and Lu Ssanet ( real name Louis de Lussanet ) on drums. Rita Reys, of course, is doing the vocals. I found a fragment of her singing After You've Gone with the Dutch Swing College Band:

Vandaag terug in de tijd ... ver terug. Een nummer gecomponeerd eind jaren twintig en gespeeld op een zogenaamde pianola, een kruising tussen een piano en een "draaiorgel". Een wat vreemde omschrijving geef ik toe, maar m.b.v. rollen kon men in het begin van de XXste eeuw de piano muziek laten maken, zonder dat men zelf de kunst van het pianospelen onder de knie moest hebben. Deze instrumenten waren toen erg populair en veertig jaar geleden droomde ik al ooit zo'n instrument te bezitten. 't Is er nooit van gekomen.

Ik herinner me, dat een jaar geleden tijdens een rommelmarkt in Nisse, een klein dorpje in de Zak van Zuid Beveland, er zo'n pianola bij opbod verkocht werd. Ik heb geen idee of het ding nog werkte en hoe hij klonk en ik heb ook niet afgewacht wat het ding uiteindelijk opgebracht heeft. Bovendien kan ik wel thuis komen met een paar oude boeken of platen ( of met de zoveelste gramofoon die-het-nog-doet ...), maar moeilijk met een 400 kg. wegende ruimteverslindende pianola in de kofferbak (!).
Luister hoe zo'n pianola klonk en als je wilt kun je zachtjes meezingen - de tekst staat hieronder.

Slim and Slam: a dime a dozen?

SLIM and SLAM: A DIME A DOZEN?

Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart in duo: Slim and Slam, as they labeled themselves, where rather popular in the New York clubs in 1938 and Vocalion made several recordings with this popular duo, known for their nonsensical novelty pieces. Their Flat Foot Floozie with one Floy Joy, became a hit in 1938 ( the Dutch duo Johnny and Jones ( Nol Van Wesel and Max Kannewasser recorded this tune in 1938 as their first Decca recording ). Ever heard the song text: Laguna oreeney - Laguna orooney - laguna oreeney - Lyin' in the Sun and Havin' Fun or the nonsensical quote: Pippity Pop, Goes The Motor-sickle; Phrases one never forgets! Slam plays the bowed bass.

On the 9th of November 2008, today 70 years ago, Slim and Slam recorded four sides for Vocalion:

SLIM AND SLAM: Slim Gaillard guitar and vocal - Slam Stewart bass and vocal with Kenneth Hollon on tenor saxophone - Sam Allen on the keys and Pompey "Guts" Dobson on drums.

Dopey Joe - Sweet Safronia - It's Gettin' Kinda Chilly - Buck Dance Rhythm

According the discographies Slim Gaillard tap-dances on the last title.

Seventy years ago they recorded four tunes accompanied by three musicians, mentioned above. Kenneth Hollon played the tenor saxophone in bands like Hal Hunter's in the early 1930s and introduced Billie Holiday for one of her first public appearances. He would be one of the musicians that accompanied her on the "great" Strange Fruit recording for Commodore; "great"? The song, not the subject of the song of course.

The four tunes on this session, all Gaillard compositions, are light-footed and entertaining - played in an up-tempo with a screaming saxophone; the typical bowed bass and Slam vocalizing the tones to play; and a swinging rhythmical guitar: Dopey Joe (from Baltimore), (Say Hey Hey) Sweet Safronia, (Man, it's really cold ........) It's Gettin' Kinda Chilly and Buck Dance Rhythm - all with nonsensical lyrics. The tap-dance in the last tune, credited to Slim Gaillard in the books, was not done by Slim, but by one of the fans in the recording studio, Kenneth Hollon remembered 35 years later ....... Well he was in that studio, so why should we question the correctness of the story? Slim Gaillard was a good dancer after all. Jerry pointed me to a film fragment from the film Hellzapoppin' from 1941, in which Slim Gaillard is to be heard on the piano, together with his companion Slam Stewart on the bass; a great fragment to introduce you to their music.

A great dance party .......... By the way - the music of Slim en Slam, jive music - rhythm & blues and rock and roll avant-la-lettre should be labeled as amusement or vaudeville music. It's entertaining and you don't need to have a music's degree to understand it. Great to listen to, but if you listen to the four songs of this 70 years old recording session it seems as if they all have the same drive - the same sound - the same melody - the same key. I found a compilation by a guy who says that he hates all Slim and Slam music, because they all sound the same. He took a fragment of a Slim and Slam performance and posted some songs simultaneous in the film. Listen to it and .......... to be honest? ........ well judge yourself.

RITA REYS met het NORTH STATE huisorkest

In de jaren zestig begonnen reclamebureaus huishoudens te benaderen met de modernste reclamecampagnes, zoals het versturen van gramofoonplaatjes, die de klant moesten verlokken hun product te kopen.
Deze gramofoonplaatjes moesten, uiteraard, heel dun zijn, om, goedkoop, als brief verstuurd te kunnen worden. Deze flubberplaatjes, zoals wij ze noemden, waren klankdrukken, voornamelijk gemaakt door Sound for Industry uit Engeland of onze eigen Rotterdamse Sonopresse. Ook North State, een toendertijd bekend sigarettenmerk probeerde hun klanten te verlokken met zo'n plaatje, gezongen door Rita Reys met het North State Huisorkest. Er was hier geen sprake van een verhullend pseudoniem, want zowel op de hoes als op de foto waren zowel Rita Reys als de Dutch Swing College Band duidelijk genoemd.

Deze plaat is uitgegeven op de dag dat North State in Nederland in de nieuwe internationale verpakking verkrijgbaar werd gesteld. Wij hopen dat deze plaat u evenveel genoegen zal schenken als North State, de zachte geurige Amerikaan.

In die jaren zestig werd er nog volop reclame gemaakt voor het roken van sigaretten - een toen algemeen geaccepteerd genotmiddel. Hoewel hier nergens expliciet genoemd of afgebeeld, werd jazzmuziek vaak geassocieerd met rokerige jazzclubs, waar een zwaar zwetende trompettist met rokende sigaret in de hand, met toegeknepen ogen vanwege die rook, een spetterende solo ten uitvoer brengt. Roken hoorde bij jazzmuziek, zoals overigens ook alcohol en drugs. Zonder al die genotsmiddelen, werd gesuggereerd, viel er weinig te genieten bij deze muziek.

Op het flubberplaatje vier nummers, alle opgenomen in Den Haag op 31 juli 1963 en ook terug te vinden op de bekende LP Rita Reys and the Dutch Swing College Band: Jazz Sir That's Our Baby ( Philips 433284PE) (let op de woordspelingen in de titel)
De Dutch Swing College Band bestond in die dagen uit Ray Kaart op trompet, Dick Kaart op trombone, Peter Schilperoort op klarinet, Arie Ligthart op banjo en gitaar Bob van Oven op bas en Lu Ssanet ( eingelijk heette hij Louis de Lussanet ) op slagwerk. Rita Reys, uiteraard, nam de zang voor haar rekening.
