Mariano di Nunzio en zijn trio brachten onlangs op het Dodicilune label een nieuwe plaat uit getiteld Sonata a 3 + 2. Het trio, voluit het Trio Barracina genaamd, bestaat uit Mariano di Nunzio op trompet, Massino de Stephanis op bas en Daniele Fusi op slagwerk. Voor dit project werden twee extra musici uitgenodigd: Sandro Maria op altsax en klarinet en Andrea Rellini op cello. Dit verklaart meteen de titel van het album: Sonata a 3 + 2.

Ik leerde het trompetspel van Mariano di Nunzio kennen dankzij drie eerder uitgebrachte platen. Het album, gewijd aan de muziek van Kurt Weill werd uitgebracht eind jaren negentig met zijn groep Il Volo di Lindbergh, een kwintet met Mariano di Nunzio op trompet en flicorno, wat Italiaans is voor de bugel. Deze plaat dateert van maart 1999. Mariano di Nunzio woonde en werkte toen in Siena (Italië) als professioneel trompettist en gaf les aan de Centro Nazionale Studi sul Jazz (= Nationaal Studiecentrum voor Jazz) in Siena, een organisatie die (nog steeds) erg actief is in de promotie van de jazzmuziek in Italië. Volgens mijn laatste gegevens werkt hij daar momenteel nog steeds, naast leider van zijn eigen groepen zoals het XQuartet en zijn Trio Barracina + 2. In 2000 richtte hij een eigen groep op, waarvan we de leden al tegengekomen zijn bij zijn laatste album: Massimo de Stephanis op bas en Daniele Fusi op slagwerk. Hun eerste plaat is getiteld Barracina. Barracina, of Barra, is de naam van één van de voorsteden van Napels, de plaats waar Mariano geboren en opgegroeid is. Hier kreeg hij ook zijn eerste muzieklessen van zijn vader, die, hoe kan het ook anders, ook trompettist was. Hier deed hij ook zijn eerste ervaringen op als muzikant. Ik was verrast toen ik dit album hoorde - een mix van nummers uit de traditionele Napolitaanse traditie geserveerd in hedendaagse moderne jazz. In 2005 richtte hij een kwartet op met gitaar waarop hijzelf te horen is op trompet; Domenico Caliri op de (elektrische) gitaar, Silvia Bolognesi op de bas en Simone Bosco op slagwerk. Dit zgn. XQuartet is te horen op Suite For Quartet, uitgebracht op het Splasc(H) label en is gewijd aan de slachtoffers van de tsunami - Ook zo'n plaat die me verraste!

De plaat Sonata a 3 + 2 door het Mariano di Nunzio Trio Barracina + 2 is geïnspireerd door de gedichten van Oscar Wilde: Grazie a Oscar Wilde e alle sue poesie che hanno ispirato questo disco ( = Met dank aan Oscar Wilde en zijn gedichten, die een inspiratie waren voor deze plaat), al ontgaat me, als nuchtere Zeeuw, de directe link tussen de dichter en deze muziek. Het bevat één sonate ( Sonata a 3 + 2), die onderverdeeld is in vijf delen, met namen als Allegro, Adagio, Andantino, Scherzo en Finale: con brio. Nu hoef je geen expert te zijn in de klassieke muziek om te weten dat al deze termen aanduidingen zijn over de snelheid waarmee een (deel van een) compositie gespeeld moet worden: Allegro betekent snel - Adagio: langzaam en statig - Andantino: "een wat gehaast wandeltempo" (!) - Scherzo: (letterlijk "grap" in het Italiaans) en wijst op een snel gespeeld humoristisch deel en tenslotte het eindnummer Finale con brio wat zo iets betekent als krachtig en met pit. Dit album is niet, zoals je zou vermoeden, een klassiek stuk geworden, al leunt het tweede nummer Adagio, dankzij de cello en klarinet daar wel tegen aan. Het derde nummer opent met een thema met Mariano di Nunzio op gestopte trompet subtiel begeleid door de borstels, de brushes van Daniele en de bas van Massino. Heerlijke jazz ..... Persoonlijk vond ik het unisono gespeelde intro met Mariano en Sandro een mooie afsluiter.

Jammer genoeg is het trio van Mariano di Nunzio in onze streken nagenoeg onbekend en ze treden maar zelden buiten Italië op. Wat jammer, want deze muzikanten kunnen zich met gemak meten aan de Europese norm. Wie durft het aan deze mensen eens naar België of Nederland te halen? Tot die tijd zullen we ons moeten behelpen met hun platen.

Mariano di Nunzio, trompettist en componist, heeft een nieuw album uitgebracht met zijn Trio Barracina uitgebreid met een cellist en een rietblazer. De kans is groot dat je nog nooit van deze Italiaanse trompettist gehoord hebt en de titel: Sonata a 3 + 2, gesplitst in vijf delen, suggereert eerder een schijfje met klassieke muziek, dan een heerlijke jazzplaat. Toch is dat laatste het geval - Mariano di Nunzio laat hier horen dat hij weet hoe zijn muziek moet klinken: een uitgebalanceerde groep met Mariano op gestopte trompet - het betere borstelwerk van Daniele en het subtiele baswerk van Massino - kortom een groep om in de gaten te houden. Keep Swinging houdt er van dit soort onbekende groepen voor het voetlicht te halen - als je je afvraag hoe je moet voorkomen daarvan niets te missen, vraag dan de nieuwsbrief aan. Mail me !!

Mariano di Nunzio and his Trio released a new album entitled Sonata a 3 + 2. The trio, full named Trio Barracina features Mariano di Nunzio trumpet, Massino de Stephanis double bass and Daniele Fusi on drums. For this project two musician were added: Sandro Marra on alto saxophone and clarinet and Andrea Rellini on cello. This explains the mysterious title of the album: Sonata a 3 + 2.

I learned about Mariano di Nuzio thanks to three of his previous records. The album, dedicated to the music of Kurt Weill is played by Il Volo di Lindbergh, a group of five musicians featuring Mariano di Nunzio on trumpet and flicorno, which is the Italian word for a flugelhorn. This album was recorded in March 1999. At that time Mariano, who is a professional trumpet player since the early 1990s, teached at the Centro Nazionale Studi sul Jazz in Siena, wich still is one of the most active jazz foundations of Italy. Nowadays he's still active, of course as the leader of his Trio Barracina +2, XQuartet and teaching the Siena Jazz school of music ( as its English name is)

In 2000 he founded his own trio featuring the two musicians still active in his group: Massimo de Stephanis on bass and Daniele Fusi on drums. There first album was entitled Barracina. Barracina, or Barra, is the name of one of the suburbs of Naples, the city were Mariano was born and raised and where he got his first music lessons from his father, who was a trumpet player too, and where he worked as a musician. I was surprised by this first album, which combines the Neapolitan tradition with contemporary jazz. I wrote about it in a previous blog, entitled Mariano di Nunzio - trumpet player .

In 2005 he founded a quartet featuring himself at the trumpet, Domenico Caliri at the (electric) guitar, Silvia Bolognesi at the bass and Simone Bosco on drums. This XQuartet released a Suite For Quartet, dedicated to the victims of the December 2004 tsunami - really a fascinating record too.

The album Sonata a 3 + 2 by the Mariano di Nunzio Trio Barracina is dedicated to the poems of Oscar Wilde - Grazie a Oscar Wilde e alle sue poesie che hanno ispirato questo disco, the cover reads ( = Thanks to Oscar wilde and all his poems, which inspired us to make this record). It contains one Sonata which is structured in five parts, with names like Allegro, Adagio, Andantino, Scherzo and Finale: con brio. You don't have to be an expert in music to know that these terms are used to indicate the different speeds in classical music. Allegro means fast - Adagio: slow and stately - Andantino: a "bit faster then a walking pace" - Scherzo: (which means "a joke" in Italian), refers to a fast-moving humorous composition. The final track Finale con brio means that it has to be played with vigor and spirit. This album, this Sonata is not the reconstruction of a classical sonata of Brahms or Claude Debussy, but a pure jazz recording, although the cello and clarinet in parts like in the second track: Adagio, play elements that sounds like a classical piece of music. The third track, Andantino opens with a nice fragment of Mariano di Nunzio on a muted trumpet accompanied by the brushes of Daniele and the bass of Massino. Personally I like the last track the best: Finale con brio, with a unison intro played by Mariano di Nunzio and Sandro Marra.

It is a pity that Mariano di Nunzio and his Trio Barracina is rather unknown outside Italy and that is a shame if you realize that the recordings I heard are from a high professional level. It would be great to hear these men in concert once, but up to that time we'll have to do with their albums .................

The title, Sonata a 3 + 2, broke up into five parts, suggests that it contains classical music, but nothing is further from the truth. Mario di Nunzio created with his enlarged group a balanced sound which shows what great jazz musicians they are ........ Mariano's trumpet - the sustained rhythms of the brushes and the great bass sound make, that this album will fascinate a lot of jazz fans .......... Dankzij het Centro Studi sul Jazz Arrigo Polillo ( Het Siena Jazz Archief) kan ik jullie een paar bijzondere uitgaven introduceren rondom de Italiaanse trompettist Mariano di Nunzio. De eerste CD is eenvoudigweg getiteld Kurt Weill en wordt uitgevoerd door een kwintet, genaamd Il volo di Lindbergh, wat refeert aan de legendarische overtocht van The Spirit of St. Louis, gevlogen door Charles Lindbergh. De groep bevat Raffaele Brancati op fluit en rieten, Mariano Di Nunzio op trompet en bügel, Sergio Corbini aan de piano, Amedeo Ronga op bas en Daniele Fusi op slagwerk. Het werd opgenomen maart 1999 voor het Le Carrozze label ( CARR 10004).

Kurt Weill was een componist, die in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw leefde. Hij schreef verschillende opera's en zijn muziek is nog steeds populair en wordt nog steeds op diverse podia uitgevoerd, door bijvoorbeeld bands als het Willem Breuker Kollektief. Het eerste nummer, Bilbao song, is een stuk uit Kurt Weill's theatershow Happy End. Ik werd geboeid door het nummer My Ship, waarin Sergio Corbini een mooi intro neerzet op de piano en later in duet gaat met Marianno di Nunzio op bügel; een mooie ballade. Deze plaat is, hoewel gewijd aan de muziek van Kurt Weill, een echte jazzplaat geworden, met daarin, zoals ik al eerder memoreerde, een paar schitterende langzame nummers, zoals bijvoorbeeld Je ne t'aime pas; ook zo'n juweeltje. Een andere schitterende ballad gespeeld op de bugel is het laatste nummer Speak Low, een bekend jazznummer.

De tweede plaat is ook zo'n verborgen juweeltje gespeeld door het trio van Mariano di Nunzio en getiteld Barracina. Het werd opgenomen in Siena op 27 en 28 november 2000 voor het Le Carrozze label ( CARR 10012).

Ik zeg bewust "verborgen", omdat de hoes van de CD geen jazzplaat suggereert. De tracklist bevat zo op het eerste gezicht 17de eeuwse suites, zoals Suite Hopla en Suite La Tammurriata del trio en een stuk getiteld Porta del giorno en Drums. Deze plaat is gewijd aan de Napolitaanse muziektraditie uit de 17de eeuw en Marianno di Nunzio en zijn trio ( zelf speelt hij trompet en bügel), Massimo de Stephanis op bas en Daniele Fusi op slagwerk, hebben deze 17eeuwse harmonieën en ritmes ( polka's) omgevormd tot swing en funky ritmes en het is een prachtige document geworden in de moderne jazz traditie. Een mooi voorbeeld is het nummer Via Pacinotti nº 25 !

Beide albums bevatten verborgen schatten, al suggereren de hoezen anders. Jammer, een gemiste kans, trouwens ook het bijbehorende boekje is alleen in het Italiaans, zodat de informatie voor velen ontoegankelijk blijft; jammer, waarom niet gewon tweetalig? Maar goed - de muziek - daar gaat het om en die is de aanschaf zeker waard.

NARCISSUS QUARTET.
Vanmiddag om 16.00 uur treedt in de Porgy en Bess Jazzclub het kwartet van Robin Verheyen op, onder de naam van het Narcissus Quartet. Dit kwartet bestaat uit Robin Verheyen op sax, Jozef Dumoulin op piano ( die Harmen Fraanje op piano heeft vervangen), Clemens van der Feen bas en Flin van Hemmen op slagwerk. Robin Verheyen won onlangs de Django d'Or, de prijs, die toegekend wordt aan jong Belgisch talent. Clemens van der Feen speelt bijna een thuiswedstrijd; hij is geboren en getogen in Middelburg.

KALLE ENGSTRØM ( 1908 - 1955 )

Hundred years ago, on the 5th of October 1908, Karl W. Engstrøm, better known as Kalle Engstrøm, was born in Oslo - Norway. As a young adult he started to play the clarinet and alto saxophone in local bands around Hamar, where he raised, before he returned to Oslo. Late 1920s he was one of the most gifted Norwegian jazz soloists in bands like the Willie Vieth's Kaba-orchestra (photo on the right). In 1934 he founded, together with Gunnar Sønstevold, Svein Øvergaard and guitarist Finn Westbye, a quartet that was called The Funny Boys. (photo on the left). With this group he made four trips along European venues in the 1930s. In the early 1940s he became a member of the Bristolorkestret directed by Øivind Bergh, a dance and light music orchestra which played at the Hotel Bristol in Oslo. In February 1940 he recorded with Jack Butler and his Swing Patrol, in which also Robert Normann, the great Norwegian guitar player, participated. In November 1941 Kalle Engstrøm arranged and recorded with the Øivind Berghs Bristolorkester the tune Pål sine høner and recorded it for Columbia. Like in Holland the German forbid to play "jazz" and music with English titles, so this was a camouflaged song. He also played in Oslo at the Restaurant Humlen as part of the Alf Søgaard Quintet. After the war he wasn't very active in music anymore. I found the above mentioned recordings at the Robert Normann - definitive collection 1938-41 vol. 1, released by Normann Records and the latter at Sigarett stomp - Jazz in Norway 1940-1950, released by the Norsk Jazz Arkiv (= Norwegian Jazz Archive ) in Oslo on Herman records (HJCD 9002 ).
Kalle Engstrøm passed away in Oslo, January 1955.

Thanks to the Centro Studi sul Jazz Arrigo Polillo ( The Siena Jazz Archive) in Italy, I was pointed to some albums made by the Italian trumpet player Mariano di Nunzio. The first one is simply titled Kurt Weill and is performed by a quintet, labelled as Il volo di Lindbergh, which means, freely translated something like Lindbergh's flight, refering to his transatlantic flight in the Spirit of St. Louis between New York and Paris May 1927. The bands contains Raffaele Brancati on reeds and flute, Mariano Di Nunzio on trumpet and flugelhorn, Sergio Corbini at the piano, Amedeo Ronga on bass and Daniele Fusi on drums. It was recorded in March 1999 on the Le Carrozze label ( CARR 10004)
Kurt Weill was a composer who lived in the first half of the XXth century. He wrote several opera's and his music is still popular. You can find his music on stage, but also played by bands like the Willem Breuker Kollektief. The first tune, Bilbao song, brings you that great Kurt Weill sound, a tune from his stage show Happy End. I was very fascinated by the tune My Ship, with a great intro by Sergio Corbini at the piano and later in duet with Marianno di Nunzio on the flugelhorn; a great ballad. This record, although dedicated to the music of Kurt Weill, has become a real jazz album with, like I said before, some great ballads. Je ne t'aime pas is another great ballad on flugelhorn and the final tune, Speak Low, a known jazz piece, which concludes this fine disc.
Mariano di Nunzio
The second album is another hidden jewel by Mariano di Nunzio and is titled Barracina.

It was recorded in Siena on the 27th and 28th of November 2000 for Le Carrozze records ( CARR 10012) I say "hidden", because when you view the cover it doesn't looks like a jazz record at all. It contains two 17th century suites, Suite Hopla and Suite La Tammurriata del trio and a piece titled Porta del giorno and Drums. This record is dedicated to the Napolitan musical tradition from the 17th century, and Marianno di Nunzio and his trio ( with himself on trumpet and flugelhorn, Massimo de Stephanis on bass and Daniele Fusi on drums) have transformed the 17th century harmonies and rhythms ( like the polka) into swing and funky jazz rhythms and it became a great document in modern jazz. Enjoy tunes like Via Pacinotti nº 25.

Both albums are "hidden” treasures - the covers doesn't suggest that the music on the album is jazz and that is a shame I guess ( others might say that's a plus-point. Okay - I take your point). The liner notes for both albums are in Italian, a great language, but for billions an inaccessible language - why not a bi-lingual translation?

Nederlands-vlaams( To the English part with an Italian trumpet player Mariano di Nunzio.)

De komende week is er weer van alles in onze streek op jazzgebied te beleven. Dit weekend, om precies te zijn tot zondag 5 oktober 2008 wordt net over de grens het Brugge Jazz 2008 festival gehouden. Dit weekend is er volop te genieten van gerenomeerde namen als Bert van den Brink, Louis Sclavis, Henri Texier en Alexander von Schlippenbach. Morgen, zondag 5 oktober 2008 hoort iedere jazzliefheber in Porgy en Bess te zitten om de genieten van het Narcissus Quartet met daarin de veelbelovende Belgische saxofonist Robin Verheyen en Clemens van der Feen, bassist met Zeeuwse roots. Dit concert begint om 16.00 uur in de Noordstraat in Terneuzen. Afgelopen donderdag speelde hier ook al Rik Mol in het kader van de uitreiking van de Stimuleringsprijs 2008 van het Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds Zeeland. Als je dat concert gemist hebt, krijg je een herkansing en kun je op 8 oktober naar het Schuttershofcafé in Middelburg trekken, waar Rik Mol speelt vanaf 21.30 uur.

Op vrijdag 9 oktober speelt de Jazzlab Series All Star Band in Foyer De Spiegel in Sint Niklaas; Belgische jazz van hoge kwaliteit. En als je het volgende weekend alvast aan het plannen bent? Op zaterdag vindt weer de halfjaarlijkse Doctor Jazz Dag plaats (voorheen Doctor Jazz Reunie) in Wageningen met een druk bezochte beurs en optredens van traditionele jazzbands. Hierover later deze week meer.
