John Scofield in Concert

The International Jazz Festival of Middelburg, in the south-western part of The Netherlands, started with a great concert on the 8th of April 2008, by the John Scofield Trio with Horns at the Stadsschouwburg. In fact, this concert was an appetizer for the real festival, scheduled from 9 up to the 12th of May 2008. John Scofield performed with his rhythm section featuring Matt Penman on bass and Bill Stewart, his drummer for years. The trio was enlarged with a horn section. John Scofield, born in 1952 in Dayton, Ohio, is one of the most interesting guitar players in jazz nowadays and he belongs, together with guitar players like Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny and Mike Stern, to name some, to the best-there-is.

He is known for his participation in Miles Davis Electric Band in the early 1980s. When you listen to his music on stage, you can't imagine that he started to play in the style of Jim Hall, whose music he admired. When he had finished the Berklee School of Music he played with Gary Burton and Mick Goodrick. In a previous blog I referred to his first concert at Carnegie Hall with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. Since that concert his music developed from the jazz-rock into fusion, free jazz and the music of Miles, with a lot of electronics and synthesizers into the style he played on stage. The fans. gathered in Middelburg, got value for money. In two sets John Scofield performed tunes from his last album, titled This Meets That, like Heck of a Job, the ballad Behind Closed Doors by Charley Rich and the opener of the evening, the well known House Of The Rising Sun.

After the break he showed his abilities using samples on the synthesizer in another classic pop tune I Can't Get No Satisfaction. Other tunes were Memorette and Strangeness In The Night, a tune with some surprising changes in tempo. The horn group, featuring Phil Grenadier, the brother of bass player Larry, on trumpet and flugelhorn, Tom Olin on tenor saxophone and flute and Frank Vacin on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet, played a minor part in the concert. They played some short, not convinced, solos. There major task was to give accents behind Scofields solos and to make a solid base with the baritone saxophone or the snoring sound of the bass clarinet (what a great instrument !) played by Frank Vacin. John Scofield ended his concert with an encore, almost entirely filled with a duet with himself using samples on his synthesizer on the floor in front of him.

The audience enjoyed it and so did the organization of the festival, who had booked a great opening act. Het is verbazend om te ontdekken dat zo'n jazzmuzikant de Stadsschouwburg van Middelburg, toch een betrekkelijk kleine gemeenschap, op een gewone dinsdagavond helemaal op zijn kop zet (= It is amazing to see how sucha jazz musician in a small community, like Middelburg, brings the Stadsschouwburg down on a regular Tuesday evening ), Renny Minnaert, the proud festival director said after the performance. Two weeks ago only 60 tickets were sold and suddenly ...... within’ a week, all tickets were gone. The Stadsschouwburg seemed to be the place to be !

During this concert the audience was informed about the artists that are scheduled for the second edition of the International Jazz Festival Middelburg in May. Great names like Maceo Parker, Archie Shepp, Bobby Previte, E.S.T., Eric Vloeimans and good old lady Rita Reys, just to name some, will give concerts in the unique attractive inner court of the abbey and venues in the centre of the city. De tweede editie van het Internationaal Jazz Festival van Middelburg ging afgelopen week ( dinsdag 8 april 2008) van start met een schitterend concert van het John Scofield Trio with Horns ( = met blazers). In feite was dit concert een opwarmertje voor het echte festival dat gepland staat voor het pinksterweekend, te weten 9 t/m 12 mei 2008. Ik gaf in een eerdere bijdrage al een impressie van het openingsconcert van John Scofield en zijn trio op 8 april 2008 in het Nederlands. Vandaag dus geen nieuwe Nederlandse bijdrage, maar een link naar twee interessante eerdere bijdragen, zoals het concert van Freek de Jonge, gehouden tijdens het 50 jarige bestaan van Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen een jaar geleden of een kennismaking met een prachtig nummer, getiteld Trees and Grass and Things gespeeld door het Charles Williams Septet, dat ik op het spoor kwam dankzij een Jules Deelder verzamelalbum: Deelder Blijft Draaien.

DE WERF - Brugge: Op zaterdag 26 april treedt het John Marshall / Ferdinand Povel Quintet op in De Werf in Brugge. Ik schreef over deze groep in een eerdere bijdrage. Op zondag 27 april zal het Matthew Shipp Trio optreden in de club. Dit trio bestaat uit pianist Matthew Shipp met Joe Morris op bas en Whit Dickey op slagwerk. The second edition of the International Jazz Festival of Middelburg, in the south-western part of The Netherlands, started with a great concert by the John Scofield Trio with Horns at the Stadsschouwburg in Middelburg on Tuesday the 8th of April 2008. In fact, this concert was an appetizer for the real festival, scheduled from 9 up to the 12th of May 2008. I'll post an impression from this great opening concert in the English language later this week. I'd suggest for today some blogs I posted a year ago about a concert of the Dutch stand up comedian Freek De Jonge in concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen due to its 50th anniversary last year and a contribution about the tune Trees and Grass and Things as recorded by the Charles Williams Septet , reissued on a Jules Deelder compilation album, titled Deelder Blijft Draaien.

DE WERF - Bruges:
On Saturday the 26th of April the John Marshall / Ferdinand Povel Quintet will perform at De Werf Jazz Club in Bruges, Belgium. I wrote about that group in a previous blog. On Sunday the 27th of April the Matthew Shipp Trio will perform too in the club. This trio features. piano player Matthew Shipp with Joe Morris on bass and Whit Dickey on drums. De tweede editie van het Internationaal Jazz Festival van Middelburg, ging afgelopen week ( dinsdag 9 april 2008) van start met een schitterend concert van het John Scofield Trio with Horns ( = met blazers). In feite was dit concert een opwarmertje voor het echte festival dat gepland staat voor het Pinksterweekend, te weten 9 t/m 12 mei 2008.

John Scofield trad op met zijn ritmesectie, bestaande uit Matt Penman op bas en Bill Stewart, zijn slagwerker, waar hij al heel wat jaren mee samenspeelt. Het trio was voor deze tour uitgebreid met een blazerssectie. John Scofield, geboren in 1952 in Dayton, Ohio, is één van de meest opvallende gitaristen in de hedendaagse jazz en hij behoort tot de grootten op de gitaar zoals zijn leeftijdsgenoten Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny en Mike Stern. John Scofield is vooral bekend geworden door zijn deelname aan de Miles Davis bands, begin jaren tachtig, toen die vooral bekend stonden als zijn electric bands. Als je hem hoort spelen in de Stadschouwburg kun je je niet goed voorstellen dat hij als tiener een copie van Jim Hall genoemd werd, de gitarist die hij zo bewonderde. Na zijn studie aan de Berklee School of Music speelde hij met Gary Burton en Mick Goodrick. In een eerdere weblog refereerde ik al aan zijn eerste grote optreden in Carnegie Hall met de band van Gerry Mulligan en Chet Baker.

Sinds dat concert evalueerde zijn muziek van de jazz-rock, via de free jazz, fusion en de muziek van Miles tot wat het nu is, onder andere met gebruikmaking van synthesizers en geluidsamples. De honderden fans in de Stadsschouwburg, helemaal uitverkocht, kregen dan ook waar voor hun geld. In twee sets speelde het John Scofield Trio ( with Horns) nogal wat nummers van hun nieuwste album, getiteld This Meets That, zoals het nummer Heck of a Job, het langzame nummer Behind Closed Doors geschreven door Charley Rich en het openingsnummer van de avond, de popklassieker-in-een-nieuw-jasje House Of The Rising Sun. Na de pauze gebruikte hij de synthesizer in een andere klassieker, I Can't Get No Satisfaction. Andere nummers waren Memorette en Strangeness In The Night, een nummer met een aantal verrassende tempowisselingen. De bassist, overigens, ontpopte zich als een kundig solist en ook de drummer kreeg alle ruimte.

De blazersgroep, daarentegen, bestaande uit Phil Grenadier, broer van bassist Larry, op trompet en bügel, Tom Olin op tenorsax en fluit en Frank Vacin op baritonsax en basklarinet speelden maar een ondergeschikte rol. Ze kregen af en toe korte soli, die niet erg overtuigden, en leken verder alleen ingehuurd voor het plaatsen van accenten tijdens Scofields solo's of het leggen van een solide basis m.b.v. de baritonsax of basklarinet ( wat een schitterend instrument) bespeeld door Frank Vacin.

John Scofield eindigde het concert met een toegift, waarin hij zich bijna helemaal solo, of beter gezegd in duet met behulp van samples en de synthesizer, kon uitleven. Het publiek waardeerde dit zeer en kon terugkijken op een geslaagd openingsconcert, evenals de organisatie overigens, die na afloop nog wat verbouwereerd was over de grote toeloop. Het is verbazend om te ontdekken dat één zo'n jazzmuzikant op een gewone dinsdagavond de Stadsschouwburg, in een relatief kleine gemeenschap als Middelburg, een uitverkochte zaal plat krijgt zei Renny Minnaert, de festivaldirecteur trots na afloop: Twee weken geleden waren er nog maar 6o kaarten verkocht en .... ineens ..... binnen een week was de hele schouwburg uitverkocht - geen kaartje meer te krijgen. De schouwburg was die dinsdagavond voor jazzminnend Zeeland the place to be.

Tijdens dit concert werd het publiek uitgebreid geinformeerd over de artiesten, die in mei tijdens het festival zullen optreden. Artiesten van naam, zoals Maceo Parker, Archie Shepp, Bobby Previte, E.S.T. en onze eigen Eric Vloeimans en Jazzdiva Rita Reys, om er een paar te noemen. De optredens tijdens dit Tweede Internationale Jazz Festival van Middelburg zijn gesitueerd op het unieke sfeervolle abdijplein en op de podia in het centrum van Middelburg. Later zal ik een aantal artiesten nader introduceren, voorzover nodig, en wie in de tussentijd meer informatie wilt over het festival kan dit vinden op de festival website. On Tuesday the 8th of April 2008 the John Scofield Trio will give a concert at the Stadsschouwburg at the Molenwater in Middelburg, in the south western part of The Netherlands. It is the overture of the second International Jazzfestival Middelburg, that is scedulded from the 9th up to the 12th of May 2008 ( the weekend of Pentecost)
John Scofield, born in Ohio December 1951, started to play the guitar in soul and Rhythm & Blues groups when he was a teenager. He studied at Berklee College and played in a Carnegie Hall concert November 1974 with the Gerry Mulligan - Chet Baker Octet. His career is a chain of successes and cooperations with great names in jazz like Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, Gary Burton and of course his tours around the world with Miles Davis in the 1980s. His funky sound is unique although he was influenced by great guitar players like Jim Hall, George Benson and Pat Martino. Nowadays he is a sought-after artist who gives a lot of concerts. This week, for example, he will perform as part of a three week tour along Europe at the Etnafestival in Catania on Sicily, in Zurich (Switzerland), Munich (Germany), Istanbul (Turkey), Gutersloh (Germany), Rotterdam and Brussels before he visits Middelburg. John Scofield is accompanied by Matt Penman on bass and Bill Stewart on drums, who plays with John Scofield since the 1990s. This trio will be assisted ..... with Horn: Phil Grenadier on trumpet, Frank Vacin on baritone saxophone and Tom Olin on tenor sax.
During this concert the official program of the second International Jazz Festival of Middelburg will be presented - a program which contains a lot of concert with known and unknown musicians in various styles of jazzmusic, like Europe's First Lady of Jazz, Rita Reys, the New York drummer Bobby Previte, Zulema Salsasexteto, Panchito, Esbjörn Svensson Trio ( better known as E.S.T.), the Archie Shepp Quartet ( with Frank Lacy on trombone, who played in Roy Hargrove's Crisol band), the Eric Vloeimans formation Gatecrash, the Brooks Tegler Swing Band, a great US big band, The Cotton City Jazzband, pure New Orleans with Belgian roots, which brings me nostalgic memories from the 1970s when they performed with New Orleans banjo legend Emanuel Sayles and, last but not least, the great Maceo Parker. Of course I will inform you about these concerts later more extensively.

One of the most important regionals was the one directed by Antônio Rago.

Op dinsdag 8 april 2008 treedt het John Scofield Trio op in de Stadsschouwburg aan het Molenwater in Middelburg. Het concert luidt tevens de start in van het Tweede Internationale Jazzfestival Middelburg, dat gehouden wordt tijdens het pinksterweekend van 9 tot en met 12 mei 2008.
John Scofield, geboren in Ohio in december 1951, begon gitaar te spelen als tiener in allerlei soul and rhythm and blues bandjes. Hij studeerde aan het pretentieuze Berklee College en stond in november 1974 al op het podium van Carnegie Hall met het octet van Gerry Mulligan en Chet Baker. Zijn carriere is een aaneenschakeling van successen met grote namen in de jazz als Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, Gary Burton en natuurlijk zijn optredens met Miles Davis waarmee hij in de jaren tachtig over de wereld trok. Hij is in zijn gitaarspel, beinvloed door gitaristen als Jim Hall, George Benson en Pat Martino en zijn funky gitaarsound is uniek. Tegenwoordig is hij een veelgevraagd artiest die vaak optreedt. Neem nu bijvoorbeld deze week, voorafgaand aan het concert in Middelburg. Zo kun je hem vandaag, als onderdeel van zijn drie weken durende tournee, vinden op het Etnafestival in Catania op Sicilië; Hierna speelt hij nog in Zurich (Zwitzerland), Munchen (Duitsland), Istanboel (Turkije), Gutersloh (Duitsland), Rotterdam en Brussel voordat hij op het podium van de Stadsschouwburg in Middelburg staat. Hij wordt begeleid door Matt Penman op bas en Bill Stewart op slagwerk. Bill speelt al sinds de jaren negentig bij John Scofield. Het geheel wordt aangevuld ...with Horns, met Phil Grenadier op trompet, Frank Vacin op baritonsaxofoon en Tom Olin op tenorsax.
Tijdens het concert wordt het officiële programma van het Tweede Internationale Jazzfestival van Middelburg gepresenteerd - een breed opgezet programma met concerten van bekende en onbekende musici, vertegenwoordigers uit alle stijlen van de jazz - voor elk wat wils dus ....!! Wie komen we allemaal tegen? Rita Reys, bijvoorbeeld, Europe's First Lady of Jazz, de uit New York afkomstige slagwerker Bobby Previte met zijn band, Zuidamerikaanse klanken met Zulema Salsasexteto, Panchito, het Esbjörn Svensson Trio ( beter bekend als E.S.T.), het Archie Shepp Quartet ( met Frank Lacy op trombone, die tien jaar geleden in Roy Hargrove's Crisol band speelde), de Eric Vloeimans formatie Gatecrash, de Brooks Tegler Swing Band, een die band die garant staat voor swingende big band, de Cotton City Jazzband, pure New Orleans jazz met Belgische wortels, die mij nostalgische gevoelens oplevert, denkende aan hun opnamen uit 1969 met de uit New Orleans afkomstige banjolegende Emanuel Sayles en, last but not least, de grote Maceo Parker, die overal waar hij optreedt volle zalen trekt. Natuurlijk kom ik later terug op deze voor Zeeland unieke concerten.

CHORO MUSIC: In zijn bijdrage getiteld Antônio Rago - Regional & Solo Violão wijst Joergen Larsen op het belang van de radio bij de verspreiding van de Choro muziek, zoals die in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw verspreidde over Brazilië. Zo werden de regionals, de bands uit de steden, tot in de verst afgelegen gebieden van Brazilië hoorbaar. Eén van de bekendste regionals was die van Antônio Rago.
De wekelijkse Choro web log ( in het Engels) is een goed uitgangspunt als je meer wilt weten over deze schitterende, maar in West Europa nagenoeg onbekende muziekstijl uit Brazilië, die zoveel raakvlakken heeft met de jazz, dat het weleens als de Braziliaanse vorm van de jazz genoemd wordt.
