Arriving at this small club and feeling a bit under the weather, I felt that we should play something different. As I try to do on these occasions, I like to have at least the thread of a story line for a night's repertoire. Why not play some blues played or associated with John Coltrane? The David Liebman Trio - Lieb Plays The Blues á la Trane. ( DBCHR75978 )

As I have written and said many times, seeing this group live ( = John Coltrane - McCoy Tyner - Jimmy Garrison - Elvin Jones) was what inspired me directly to pursue jazz. I awaited each new release anxiously to see what to expect when I would go to the clubs in New York, as I did so often. ......... All I can say is that hearing the group live was the strongest music I have heard since, or up to that time - bar none.( = Alles wat ik er over kan zeggen is dat zijn muziek tot het beste behoorde wat ik daarna en tot die tijd had gehoord - zonder uitzonderingen).
I purposely refrained from recording Coltrane tunes for the oblivious reason that I needed and wanted to escape his titanic ( and positive) influence on my life and music. It is well known among those who have heard me speak in classes or interviews that seeing Trane live in the '60 was my epiphany.

To John Coltrane - Live Under The Sky.

Tijdens de pauze stelde David voor: Let's play some Blues themes during the next set á la Trane! What about that?

David Liebman Trio plays the Blues á la Trane

David Liebman Trio plays the Blues á la Trane ( English) - Het David Liebman Trio speelt de Blues á la Trane ( Nederlands)

Seeing Trane live in the '60 was my epiphany.
DAVID LIEBMAN TRIO plays the BLUES á la TRANE
Hans Koert

One of the latest albums by David Liebman was not really planned, according to the liner notes. In the spring of 2008 the Trio, featuring David Liebman on soprano and tenor saxophone, Marius Beets on double bass and Eric Ineke on drums, toured around with a program dedicated to Kurt Weill and Alec Wilder compositions. On the 3rd of April, 2008 a concert was scheduled at De Singer jazz club in Rijkevorsel, a city east of Antwerp in Belgium. Arriving at this small club and feeling a bit under the weather, I felt that we should play something different.
As I try to do on these occasions, I like to have at least the thread of a story line for a night's repertoire. Why not play some blues played or associated with John Coltrane?

And so it happened ........ During the concerts several John Coltrane compositions were played and we count ourselves lucky that Kris Roevens recorded this concert now available on the Daybreak record The David Liebman Trio - Lieb Plays The Blues á la Trane. ( DBCHR75978 )
Marius Beets - David Liebman and Eric Ineke at de Hopper in Antwerp (2008)
David Liebman is born in Brooklyn (NY) September 1946 and started his musical career in 1970 after he finished the New York University. He started his career in the rock group 10 Wheel Drive, that even in Holland reache
d the tip-list with the tune Morning Much Better, but his first recording seemed to have been with a Swedish group by Lars Werner and Hans Vanner in Stockholm July 1967 for the Finnish Love label.
The first recording under his own name, Night Scapes, was with poet Carvel Six in a group featuring piano player Richie Beirach and Frank Tusa (bass) with whom he should start his own group Lookout Farm in the mid 70s. During that period he played with Elvin Jones and Miles Davis. You can hear him with the latter at the On The Corner and Dark Magus albums and he toured with Miles to Japan and Europe in the summer of 1973.
DayBreak DBCHR75978

During the 1960s David heard John Coltrane live in concerts. In a study he published entitled John Coltrane's Meditations Suite: A Study in Symmetry he remembered it: As I have written and said many times, seeing this group live ( = John Coltrane - McCoy Tyner - Jimmy Garrison - Elvin Jones) was what inspired me directly to pursue jazz. I awaited each new release anxiously to see what to expect when I would go to the clubs in New York, as I did so often. ......... All I can say is that hearing the group live was the strongest music I have heard since, or up to that time - bar none.
He was so impressed by the music of Trane that he couldn't record his compositions until the early 1980s. I purposely refrained from recording Coltrane tunes for the oblivious reason that I needed and wanted to escape his titanic ( and positive) influence on my life and music. Coltrane had a great effect on his life: It is well known among those who have heard me speak in classes or interviews that seeing Trane live in the '60 was my epiphany.

David Liebman
In 1987 he made a record honoured to the music of John Coltrane on Owl Records, entitled Homage To Coltrane and a live concert in Yomuri Land - Tokyo (Japan) was released on a Columbia album, entitled Tribute To John Coltrane - Live Under The Sky.
Marius Beets ( at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club - Terneuzen - November 2010) (photo courtesy: Hans Koert)
As we may believe David in his liner notes, no preparation or rehearsals were scheduled for the De Singer concert. Dat klopt helemaal (= That's correct), Eric Ineke explained me. We speelden tijdens de eerste set gewoon ons progamma met muziek van Weill en Wilder (= We just played our regular program during the first set with music of Weill and Wilder) Eric Ineke explained. ( = But during the break David suggested Let's play some Blues themes during the next set á la Trane! What about that?. And so it happend.)

Five tracks, all related to John Coltrane were played. The opening tune, All Blues, was originally a tune recorded by the famous 1960 Miles Davis Quintet, featuring John on tenor saxophone. Up Against The Wall is an original Coltrane compositions, which, was recorded in November 1961 as Up 'Gainst The Wall on the Impulse album Impressions. Mr. P.C., is a blues dedicated to his bass player Paul Chambers, and was recorded with Trane's Quartet, in May, 1959 for his Giant Steps album. The tune Village Blues is to be found on another Coltrane classic, his album My Favorite Things. The favourite one of this album is, i.m.o., Take The Coltrane, a Duke Ellington composition and released in the Duke Ellington & John Coltrane 1962 Impulse album. This track fascinates me because of the great rhythm section on this album - a Dutch team for almost 15 years, Marius Beets on bass and Eric Ineke on drums - a solid team. The tune starts with a great solo by Marius, backed by Eric Ineke before David Liebman bursts into a great solo backed by Marius and Eric Ineke; especially the latter shows in this record what a great drummer he is. Ja, d'r gebeurt wat ( = Yes, it happens here) Eric put the record into its perspective.
Eric Ineke at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club, Terneuzen (The Netherlands) November 2010) ( photo courtesy Hans Koert)

Both Marius Beets and Eric Ineke form a solid team playing together for more then a decade in groups like Eric's own band
the JazzXpress and the Rein de Graaff Trio, last weekend in Porgy en Bess Jazz Club ( Terneuzen - The Netherlands) with Gary Foster and Marco Kegel, a great concert to be reviewed later this week. Some of the pictures were made during that concert.

A great album that should be in your collection. It can be ordered at the Challenge site or your one record shop.

Most concerts stay unrecorded, but sometimes you wished that it was ........... One of those great performances was the second set by the David Liebman Trio at De Singer in Rijkevorsdel, April 2008 and, dead lucky, it was recorded. Learn what happens when three skilled jazz musician ignore the program and start to improvise .... á la Trane. The Keep Swinging blog wasn't there - what a pity, but thanks to Challenge Records this remarkable concert is now available on CD. Wilbur Harden

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
I played myself a Savoy album titled Mainstream 1958 - The East Coast Jazz Scene. On the front a colourful number of rectangles with names of jazz musicians, which suggests that this record might be a compilation record with bands from the East Coast Jazz Scene. If you look closer to the names, you'll learn that only five names are labelled: John Coltrane, Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, Louis Hayes and an unknown name for me Wilbur Harden.
This Wilbur Harden is a rather obscure and almost legendary trumpet player - but little information seems to be available. He was born on the last day of 1924, although some sources say 1925 in Birmingham Alabama (USA). He started playing professionally in 1950 as a trumpet player in the Rhythm & Blues band of Roy Brown (no not Ray Brown) and Ivory Joe Hunter. His first jazz-gig was in the band of Yusef Lateef, where he participated in several 1957 recording sessions for some Savoy and Prestige albums like Jazz And The Sounds Of Nature, Prayer To The East and The Sounds Of Yusef. It is remarkable to learn that he played the flugelhorn on these recordings, which was an instrument rarely heard in jazz up to that time. It is said that Wilbur, who was a great fan of
Miles Davis music, started to use that instrument due to the Miles Davis recordings with Gil Evans. Fact is that he was one of the first to use it this way. In March 1958 the five names, labelled on the cover of Mainstream 1958, gathered at the Rudy Van Gelder studios in Hackensack NJ (USA) to record six tunes, all Wilbur Harden compositions: five were released on the LP Mainstream 1958: Well Fargo, West 42nd Street, E.F.F.P.H., Snuffy and Rhodomagnetics. The only tune, not released on this Savoy LP (or the 1992 Savoy reissue on CD) is Count Down which is to be found on The Complete Savoy-sessions. The Wilbur Harden discography lists several unreleased takes, false starts, talking, laughter and rehearsals of the tunes. I wonder if these unreleased takes are reissued. Benny Golson is mentioned to have been the arranger of these recorded tunes, but this is not yet confirmed.
All compositions are by Wilbur Harden, and when you listen to tunes like E.F.F.P.H., which has a latin-esque rhythm, it learns that Wilbur Harden could have become a great composer. It is great to hear him on his smooth flugelhorn playing together with the tenor of John Coltrane and the piano of Tommy Flanagan. Can someone explain me the meaning of the abbreviation: E.F.F.P.H.?
He made several recordings with John Coltrane after this release, like in The Stardust Session and with musicians like Yusef Lateef and Curtis Fuller. I think I should search for these albums. Can someone give me suggestions? In 1960 he had to stop playing because of a weak health and he didn't record after that time. His last recordings were two tunes, Accident and A New Date with the Curtis Fuller septet, released on the album Images Of Curtis Fuller. Most sources don't inform about Wilbur Harden's death, but he passed away in June 1969 complete forgotten. Thanks to the fact that he recorded with Coltrane and other great bebop players, makes that some of his records are reissued. Shame, because this man deserves further recognition.
Listen to: Don't Take Your Love From Me by the John Coltrane Quintet: John Coltrane, tenor sax - Wilbur Harden, trumpet - Red Garland, piano - Paul Chambers, bass - Jimmy Cobb, drums - from the "Stardust Session".

JAZZ BULLETIN DUTCH JAZZ ARCHIVE
Last week the new Jazz Bulletin from the Dutch Jazz Archive has been published. This magazine in the Dutch language is published four times a year. Since the first of January 2008 the Dutch Jazz Archive was incorporated in the Muziek Centrum Nederland ( = Music Centre of The Netherlands) at the Rokin in Amsterdam. Although the existence of the Dutch Jazz Archive is guaranteed I really hope that it will return strong enough as the keeper of the Dutch Jazz Heritage. Its magazine, the Jazz Bulletin is one of those important spearheads. I enjoyed a very good article by Ben Zwanink titled Parijse Sfeer in Utrechtse Kelder (= Parisian Atmosphere in Utrecht Basement), which tells about the history of the Modern Jazz Club Persepolis in Utrecht, one of the major cities in the centre of The Netherlands. It was great to learn that Piet Kuiters was mentioned brief as a performer of the Intervalkelder. Another great article is about Walt Dickerson and the magazine also memorates the dead of Fred Cigar Canté and Adriaan Jaeggi. This magazine is one of the most important activities that should be continued.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Kan iemand me suggesties geven?

JAZZ BULLETIN NEDERLANDS JAZZ ARCHIEF

Milestones

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
If you believe it must be a hell of a job to find subjects for this daily weblog, you are wrong..... the problem is often .. what to take. And if you don't have inspiration there is always the inexhaustible archive of jazz records, made since 1917, when the Original dixieland Jass (!!) Band recorded the first record, to be labeled as "jazz".
Today, fifty years ago, on the 4th of March 1958, a Tuesday, five men of the Miles Davis Sextet enter the Columbia studio's at 30th Street in New york City. Time 7.00 p.m. The musicians are Miles Davis trumpet, Cannonball Adderley alto saxophone player, John Coltrane tenor saxophone, Paul Chambers bass and Philly Joe Jones drums. Red Garland didn't arrive.
After tuning their instruments and some tunes to check the sound they are ready to start recording the first tune, the number Sid's Ahead. Sid refering to the New York disc jockey Symphony Sid ( = Sid Torin). When they start playing the tune, Red Garland still didn't arrive, so one of the first tunes to record, is recorded without the sixt man: Red Garland. That's the reason why Miles Davis is playing some chords on the piano behind Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane's solo's. When Miles takes over the solo only the excellent steady bass of Paul Chambers is to be heard and the drums and cymbals of Philly Joe Jones. The second tune to perform is Little Melonae, named after the daughter of composer Jackie McLean. This tune is played without Cannonball Adderley and Red Garland, who still didn't arrive. This tune was previous recorded by Miles Davis and John Coltrane in one of their first recordings of this tune on the 27th of October 1955 with the same rhythm section as on this 4th of March 1958 recording session. That's probably the reason Canonball Adderley doesn't play on this tune. Before they recorded the last tune, Dr. Jackle, Red Garland arrives and this is the only tune for today they play with the complete sextet. This tune, also composed by Jackie McLean, who gave it that titled. On the originally issue of these recordings the tune is misidentified as Dr. Jekyll.

Two tunes were originally released on the Columbia release Milestones by Miles Davis; Sid's Ahead and Dr. Jackle, as Little Melonae stayed unissued, until is was reissued on the Mosaic box The Complete Recordings of Miles Davis with John Coltrane.
The version of this tune used for the Japanese reissue 1958-Miles is in fact the October 1955 version ( mind the pianopart !!). The rest of the Milestones tracks were recorded a month earlier, on the 4th of February 1958. The recording session on the 4th of March 1958 lasted until 10.00 p.m.
In some previous blogs I discussed more Miles Davis session, preceded this one, like his European tour in December 1957 with
the concert in Amsterdam
and the Ascenseur pour L'échafaud recordings. In the magazine Jazz Bulletin by the Dutch Jazz Archive ( January 2008) Jan J. Mulder refers in his article Lift naar het schavot to this period too.

AT RANDOM:
A HANDFULLA GIMME - DIZZY GILLESPIE Quintet: Dizzy Gillespie trumpet, Sonny Stitt alto sax, Al Haig piano, Ray Brown bass and Kenny Clarke drums. Alice Roberts vocal. Recorded in New York on the 15th of May 1946.

The names SWEETS was used by Harrry Edison. Thanks Frank and Jo !!

Miles Davis Live In Den Haag Kenny Drew

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Sid is een bekende discjockey hier in New York; Symphony Sid ( = Sid Torin).
The Complete Recordings of Miles Davis with John Coltrane box.
