The New Orleans street parade is one of the earliest examples in jazz history and might be one of the last surviving traditions still visible in the streets in 2007. The city is famous for his festivals, his foods and, especially, its music. At Mardi Grass groups of youngsters with drums and brass instruments weaked around the streets making their music, looking to confront other gangs in a show of strength.

Nowadays the street parade is one of the elements that is part of festivities in cities, all over the world, where unsuspecting customers uninvited become part of the music. These bands, most groups of friends, gathered especially for this occasion, play a kind of carnaval music that is said to be a kind of dixieland. The repertoire is easy - tunes like Oh When The Saints, Just A Little While To Stay, Milenberg Joy or I'm Walking are to be heard, but also local hits like Brabantse Nachten .... and Er Staat Een Paard In De Gang ( popular tunes for the soutern part of the Netherlands).
Frank Koulen, known as De Neger, came to the Netherlands as one of the soldiers that liberated the southwest part of the Netherlands and found here his great love. He married and became a well known citizen of Terneuzen ( south west part of the Netherlands), where he founded a lunch room in the Noordstraat 50 years ago, named Porgy en Bess. Last month this anniverary was celebrated.
Frank started a tradition of jazz music in Terneuzen. During the last 50 years the lunch room Porgy en Bess became a well known jazz club. Frank started to organize street parades. The first one was in 1967. Frank in front of the band, leading the musicians along the inner city, from café to café, but also visiting homes for the eldery. These street parades, organised by De Neger are still remembered in Terneuzen and, starting in 1973, these parades became part of the Schelde Jazz Festival, this year held from the 31th of May up to the 3rd of June.

De New Orleans street parade is één van de oudste voorbeelden uit de jazzgeschiedenis en wellicht ook de langstvoortlevende traditie, die nog steeds zichtbaar is in de winkelcentra anno 2007. New Orleans is bekend geworden voor zijn feesten, zijn eten en zijn muziek. Op Mardi Grass, zeg maar rond carnaval, trokken groepen jongeren met slag- en blaasinstrumenten door de straten om met elkaar te rivaliseren en uit te maken welke groep het beste was.

Tegenwoordig is de streetparade verworden tot één van de onderdelen die onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn aan festivals of feesten in de stad. Niets vermoedende klanten in winkelcentra worden ongewild geconfronteerd met de muziek. Deze loopbands, zoals ze rond carnaval genoemd worden, zijn vaak vriendengroepen, die speciaal voor deze gebeurtenissen samen komen om te spelen. Ze spelen een soort muziek, die de naam dixieland gegeven wordt; het repertoire bevat de geijkte numers als Oh When The Saints, Just A Little While To Stay, Milenberg Joy of I'm Walking, afgewisseld met populaire carnavalhits als Brabantse Nachten .... of Er Staat Een Paard In De Gang - wat er gespeeld wordt is niet zo belangrijk.
Frank Koulen, beter bekend als De Neger, kwam vanuit Suriname naar Nederland als soldaat in het bevrijdingsleger en bleef in Terneuzen plakken. Hij trouwde hier en startte 50 jaar geleden een lunchroom in de Noordstraat, Porgy en Bess. Afgelopen maand werd dit jubileum uitgebreid gevierd - het zal u niet ontgaan zijn.
Frank bracht de jazzmuziek naar Terneuzen. De laatste 50 jaar veranderde Porgy en Bess van lunchroom tot jazzpodium, de huiskamer van de jazz. Frank begon street parades te organiseren - de eerste vond plaats in 1967. Met Frank voorop, carnavalask verkleed, trok de band door de binnenstad van café naar café, maar bezocht ook het bejaardentehuis. Deze streetparades leidden in 1973 tot het Schelde Jazz Festival, dat dit jaar gehouden wordt van 31 mei tot en met 3 juni.
